A CANCELED SHOW.A DEADLY VIRUS.

A SECOND CHANCE.

T WAS THE night before our first major gig, and I was determined to perform — no matter how terrible I felt. Even in the Emergency Department at

Northwest Hospital & Medical Center, all I talked about was making it to the show. That’s about the time they placed me into a coma.

Two weeks later, I woke up to learn that I was a miracle. It was the H1N1 virus, and I had been given a 10–15 percent chance of survival. Two things helped save me: the high-tech rotating bed that kept fluid out of my lungs, and people like Dr. Keenan (Physician, Northwest Hospital & Medical Center) who refused to give up on me. She even slept at the hospital until I was through the worst of it. I feel like she and her team gave me this amazing gift. I remember walking outside for the first time and seeing the trees swaying in the wind like they were waving to me, saying, “Welcome back to this beautiful world.”

I never want to forget that moment.

Seattle Repertory Theatre and Seattle Theatre Group have a history of partnering to present great theatre – August: Osage County, War Horse, and most recently, Peter Brook’s production of The Suit.

Now we continue the spirit of collaboration with tonight’s performance of the Broadway hit, Once. This play has delighted audiences all over for the last two years – with good reason. Simple, beautiful, and wrought from the heart, Once tells the enchanting tale of a Dublin street musician who’s about to give up on his dream when a beautiful young woman takes a sudden interest in his haunting love songs.

We knew immediately that Rep and STG audiences would adore the theatricality and emotional heart of the piece. And we think you will agree, Once will draw you in from the very first note. It’s an unforgettable story about going for your dreams…not living in fear…and the power of music to connect all of us.

Like the characters in the play, together the Rep and STG make beautiful music together. No one understood that better than Seattle Rep Artistic Director Jerry Manning. The greater arts community suffered an enormous loss with his sudden passing in April. Jerry was a beloved leader, director, producer, mentor and friend. He was also a steadfast champion for innovative partnerships like ours.

Working as partners allows both organizations to consider an expanding range of producing options for all our audiences. Here’s to many future years of collaboration!

NYTW (Producer) is an Off-Broadway theater dedicated to supporting theater artists at all stages of their careers . The Workshop is represented on Broadway this season with Once and Peter and the Starcatcher and is renowned for a long list of acclaimed work, including Jonathan Larson’s Rent, Tony Kushner’s Homebody/ Kabul, Caryl Churchill’s Far Away and A Number, Doug Wright’s Quills, Claudia Shear’s Dirty Blonde, Will Power’s The Seven and Jessica Blank and Erik Jensen’s Aftermath . NYTW’s productions have received a Pulitzer Prize, four Tony Awards and assorted Obie, Drama Desk and Lucille Lortel awards .

A.R.T. (Workshop Producer) at Harvard University in Cambridge, Mass ., is one of the country’s most celebrated regional theaters and winner of numerous awards, including the Tony and the Pulitzer Prize . It was founded by Robert Brustein in 1980 . Diane Paulus became artistic director in 2008 and continues A .R .T .’s mission to expand the boundaries of theater with innovative work such as Sleep No More, Prometheus Bound and the recent production of The Gershwins’ Porgy and Bess, winner of the 2012 Tony Award for Best Revival of a Musical .

Disney’s The Lion King At The Paramount Stimulated The Hearts Of Thousands… and The Local Economy

The award-winning musical, Disney’s The Lion King, concluded its triumphant four-week return to Seattle on April 6, 2014. More than 90,000 patrons reignited their love for Simba’s story by attending 32 performances at The Paramount Theatre. And they reignited more than that! It is estimated that the Seattle engagement of The Lion King generated a $21 million economic benefit to the city from travel, hotels, restaurants, parking and other businesses patronized by both theatergoers and production staff.

Josh LaBelle, Executive Director of Seattle Theatre Group (STG) noted, “Seattle often uses the phrase ‘arts mean business’ and this is an extraordinary example of just how much business the arts generate... It is also rewarding to note that while the economic indicators are strong, the outreach and community engagement STG was able to offer, conducted by members of The Lion King company during their four weeks in Seattle, made a significant deposit into arts education for our kids.”

STG’s Songwriters LabJuly 21 – 26, 2014

– STG’S SONGWRITERS LAB PARTICIPANT, AGE 14

STG’s Songwriters Lab is a weeklong program for young musicians (ages 14 to early 20s) that takes place at the Neptune Theatre. These young artists come together in a warm and welcoming environment to learn creative approaches to lyric writing and song composition through mentorship with leading Seattle songwriters, musicians, and hip-hop artists. Participants gain experience in giving and receiving constructive feedback through the mentorship process and have the opportunity to perform their songs at an informal showcase for friends and family at The Neptune. In addition to developing individual and group songwriting skills, participants will learn useful strategies for navigating the music business.

These young musicians will also get to participate in year-round opportunities in songwriting, performance, recording and music production, and will be invited to exclusive soundchecks at the Paramount, Moore, and Neptune Theatres to expand their songwriting perspectives.

This program encourages collaboration across music genres; all styles of music are welcome, from hip-hop to rock to folk to R&B.
