Every day, by using innovation and creativity, people at Gensler solve important challenges through our work. This is what Gensler is built for—we thrive on the challenges that our clients bring us on projects of all types and scales, from the everyday to the complex. In fact, over the past year we worked with our clients on an amazing 10,000 projects in 2,500 cities. Each project was unique and vital to the future.
To make the greatest positive impact on the world around us, Gensler is organized as a single cohesive community that’s connected across the globe, working with shared values and shared purpose. This year, we reshaped our network as One Community that’s able to bring Gensler’s unique strengths to the marketplace and drive transformation for our clients anywhere in the world.
This annual report highlights four key areas that go to the core of who we are. We take pride in the fact that we are an industry leader in diversity, with the understanding that assembling a team of people from diverse backgrounds and with different perspectives fuels our ability to practice in over 90 countries, designing every-thing from office furniture to major sports stadiums.
We’re also making significant investments in platforms that drive innovation, developing our own software applications, invest-ing in data-driven design, hiring talented leaders from related fields, and growing in ways that will allow exciting new partnerships with our clients. With offices in 48 locations, we have committed to a greater focus on community impact, enriching the human experi-ence through active engagement with community, charitable, civic, and not-for-profit organizations in our cities. And we celebrate our unique design culture, featuring Gensler’s global efforts to promote innovative ideas and design excellence through projects that, in every walk of life, improve people’s everyday experience.
Taken together, these stories capture the essence of our transfor-mative One Community approach, which is about the global reach and diversity of our firm. It all goes back to our commitment to empower our people to create a better world and leverage who we are as an organization to enhance the human experience.

Socio-Economic Ecological Performance Index (SEPI)
What makes our framework differentPrecedent research has proven the role that product, brand, and service quality play in creating a great experience; and a separate body of research also explores the role of specific design factors to the quality of a person’s experience. These studies, however, are often limited to retail or consumer-focused environments, and do not offer a comprehensive picture in which the design and qualities of physical space are explored alongside other experience factors. Our study seeks to fill this gap by examining all the elements of a great experience across retail, workplace, and public spaces. In it, we document the impact of physical space within a broader suite of factors that together offer a holistic framework for understanding experience.
At the core of experience is a person’s intention, or the reason they are embarking on that experience. Their reason for visiting informs how they will ultimately perceive and evaluate their experience. Those intentions, our “experience modes,” form the center of our Experience Framework. After understanding their intentions, the expectations a user brings to an experience inform how it will be perceived. During an experience, the quality of interactions a user has have a significant impact on experience, combined with the qualities of space—which range from functional issues like the ability to navigate intuitively, to higher-order items like beauty, authenticity, and uniqueness.

The selection criteria focused on the nominees’ ability to showcase bold, creative thinking and raise the bar on each of their projects. Ten winners were selected for the 2017 Rising Designer Award, with one representative chosen from each of the firm’s regions. “These people are the engine for our future,” said Jeff Barber, the GDEA Committee co-chair.
