• Anonymous poet lived between 7th century AD and the 10th century.

• Poem was written in Northern Europe.• Written in Old English.• Story centers around the Danes ( Denmark) and the

Geats (Sweden).• The sole surviving copy of the poem dates from the

year 1000 recorded by monks.• Today the manuscript is housed in the British Library.

Brief Summary of The Text

• Beowulf is a Geat warrior who crosses the sea to defeat the monster, Grendel, who is terrorizing the Danes.

• Beowulf later returns to his homeland to succeed his uncle as king of the Geats.
