It seems like educational use of video in college courses is accelerating rapidly in departments across all disciplines.

Whether faculty want to insert it into a PowerPoint presentation, link to a video during a lecture, or download a video before it’s removed; it’s quite essential to know how to download, convert, and use these videos

Judiciously chosen videos help students engage more deeply with the subject matter and recall the information they’ve learned longer.

This tutorial will present different options for video use and help you determine which option is best for you.

Video Options

Once you’ve found your video source, the following options are available:

1. link directly to video

2. create and use a video

playlist

3. search for or use other

media

4. use subscription-based or free

services

Let’s look at some examples:

His classrooms are set up with internet access, but he prefers using a DVD player. He also doesn’t want to risk having the videos removed from the site before having a chance to show the videos in class.

How would you suggest Dr. Walton use these video sources in his classes?

An emotional day...From CBS4denver.com: Boulder’s Jane Doe: the story of Dorothy Gay, a woman identified 55 years after her murder.

Note: Dr. Walton personally worked on this case and wrote the forward on the book Someone’s Daughter - In Search of Justice for Jane Doe.

New Evidence in Man’s Molesting Conviction:From myfoxphilly.com: The story introduces new evidence in the case of Gerald Washington, a man who has spent 21 years in prison accused of sexually molesting his sons.

What is a Policeman? From YouTube posted by scifi417: described as the BEST description of a Police Officer, narrated by Paul Harvey.

1. Dr. Walton could link directly to the videos but one of his primary concerns is that the they will be removed from the web.

2. Because his videos come from different sources, it’s difficult to create and make a video playlist.

3. His personal ties to the Jane Doe case leads us away from the use of other media.

Consider your options:

4. To avoid copyright concerns, Dr. Walton could use subscription-based or free services. Remembering that two of the videos are links from news sources and fall under fair use in copyright law, can the third video from YouTube be used? A careful fair use analysis needs to be applied. Click the copyright logo to weigh in on the four factors to consider in a fair use analysis.

One factor that has not yet been considered but is applicable to this example, is YouTube’s terms of service. Does YouTube prohibit the downloading and saving of this video? Click the YouTube logo to determine if Dr. Walton can use this clip.

5. Downloading, converting, and saving the file to another format is possible and seems to accommodate Dr. Walton’s preference of using a DVD. How do you do that? Click on the next button.

YouTube Terms of Service Section 5: Your Use of Content on the Site

The following restrictions and conditions apply specifically to the use of content on YouTube:

You agree to not engage in the use, copying, or distribution of any of the Content other than expressly permitted herein, including any use, copying, or distribution of User Submissions of third parties obtained through the Website for any commercial purposes.

You agree not to circumvent, disable or otherwise interfere with security-related features of the YouTube Website or features that prevent or restrict use or copying of any Content or enforce limitations on use of the YouTube Website or the Content therein.

Although the video clip meets fair use criteria, it fails to meet YouTube’s terms of service. For this clip you need to consider other options for Dr. Walton. Fortunately, a Google search provides many other links to the same video without the same restrictions of use. You may continue to download, convert, and save this file to DVD.

Paul Harvey’s: What is a Policeman?

1. purpose: why is Dr. Walton using the video? To show emotionally through video and narration what a policeman is. Provided for criticism and comment, the video shows favorable use of purpose and meets fair use criteria.

2. nature: what is the nature (or material) of the work? A video uploaded to YouTube by a YouTube member. The video is important to educational objectives and meets fair use criteria. We may need to be concerned that it’s posted on a YouTube site.

3. amount: how much of the material are you going to use? Dr. Walton intends on using the full 3 minutes and 4 seconds of the video. Although Dr. Walton is using the entire video, it is important to educational objectives and is small in nature. You’re probably okay with fair use in this case.

4. effect: what market effect does using the video have? That is, are you taking any money away from the copyright holder? In this case, the original copyright holder is difficult to determine. Dr. Walton’s use is for classroom demonstration only . Here, we can say his use has no negative effect monetarily on the copyright holder had one been identified. Fair use can be claimed.

Copyright Compliance

The Fair Use clause in copyright law provides for the use of works without permission for teaching. In order to qualify for the fair use exemption, you need to satisfy four factors of purpose, nature, amount, and effect.

The TEACH Act (Technology, Education And Copyright Harmonization Act of 2002) updates the Distance Education section of the law.

The CONFU (Conference on Fair Use) provides guidelines that specify the amount and type of copyrighted material that can be used.

Video File Types and Download Options

When downloading content from the web, you will need to identify the file type and know whether it will work on your computer. File types are typically expressed as a dot followed by 2 to 4 letters (.xxx).

Video file types range from the very common MPEG-4 video file (.mp4) file to the uncommon meta media video e-mail file (.vem). Click here for a list of file extensions used for video files.

Working with common file types and output specific to your operating system (PC or Mac) will eliminate much of the hassle you may come across with video conversion and download.

For our demonstration, we’ll be using flash video files (.flv) and windows media video (.wmv) files.

Downloading Video

There are basically three ways to download videos off the Internet: with web sites, with a Firefox extension, or with a commercial program. For this example, we’ll use the Firefox extension: Video DownLoad Helper.

Video DownLoad Helper is a free, Firefox add-on that makes downloading videos easy. You will need to have the DownLoad Helper add-on installed on your computer to download files as demonstrated. Click here to install DownLoad Helper to your computer. Installation information is located on the left navigation menu.

Once you’ve installed the DownloadHelper extension, you should see a new icon in your toolbar. When you visit sites with downloadable video, the icon is animated. A small triangle at the right of the icon opens the menu where you can select a file to download.

Use DownLoad Helper to download the news clip regarding Boulder’s Jane Doe.

If a video is downloadable, the DownloadHelper icon will be animated.

Click on the drop-down arrow to save your video.

Converting Videos

Videos generated from the internet are most commonly in the native flash video format (flv). Videos saved with DownLoad Helper are no exception. Unfortunately, flash files cannot be directly saved to, viewed, or burned directly to DVD.

You can save the .flv format, but you’ll need to convert it to a different format for playing it back or burning it to a DVD.

There are many conversion programs available on the internet. For this example, we will use Format Factory a free file format converter capable of converting all popular video, audio, and picture files to other formats.

You will need to have Format Factory installed on your computer. Click here to access their website. The download is available on the right side of the screen.

Next, we need to convert the flash file to a windows media file, a supported file type for the windows operating system.

Use Format Factory to convert the .flv file to a .wmv file.

1. Click a button in the left bar to select input settings.

2. Add souces files which you want to convert.

3. Click Start.

Creating and Burning Video

Windows Live Movie Maker gives you options to make a movie by adding videos and photos to the program and then burning it to a DVD.

Movie Maker is part of Windows Live Essentials and includes free programs from Microsoft. You can download it from http://explore.live.com/windows-live-essentials?os=winxp.

Windows Vista or Windows 7 are needed to support Windows Live Movie Maker.

One popular way to save a movie is to burn it to a DVD so you can play it on TV using a regular DVD player.

Use Windows Live Movie Maker to build a movie from the.wmv file and burn it to DVD.

Drag your converted .wmv file to Windows Live Movie Maker.

Click Burn DVD when your project is complete.

Remember: to burn a DVD, a DVD burner must be installed on your computer.
