OnRamp was started in 2009 in order to provide minority students in Milwaukee with the opportunity to experience what it’s like to be a design professional.
OnRamp provides creative kids a chance to explore often unknown possibilities.

Power Week 2.5

Main purpose: Learn general design concepts, reinforce brand guidelines & brainstorm sketches.
Module 3: Tour of Moda3
Wed 2/24, 1-3pm (CHS), 5-7 pm (UU/ONG)
Address: 320 E. Buffalo St.
Main purpose: To tour a popular retailer of many brands of snow, skate, and streetwear. Learn about market research, trends, color, target markets. Inspire student teams and volunteers to begin to refine their t-shirt concept sketches. Work session to continue on sketches.
Learning Goals:
• What is market research; how do designers know what kinds of colors, designs, trends are current and what kinds of designs will appeal to retailers and to retail customers?
• How do I gather inspirations for my own designs?
• Can I work with fellow designers to help realize my vision, even if I’m not necessarily a good illustrator myself?

Module 4: Tour of Weyco Group
Wed 3/3 1-3pm (CHS), 5-7 pm (UU/ONG)
Address: 333 West Estabrook Blvd(near Port Washington Rd)
Main purpose: To tour Weyco’s shoe product design facilities, to learn concepts of not just to graphic design but product & fashion design. Think about transitioning concepts from sketches to computer files by demonstrating Sketchpad software. Group exercise about art direction.
Learning Goals:
• Design careers involve not just print & interactive design, but fashion, product development, etc.
• How do you translate pencil sketches and ideas into computer files? Although we will be using Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator for our t-shirt designs,

Wed 1/27 1-3pm (CHS), 5-7 pm (UU/ONG)
Address: 220 E. Buffalo St., 2nd Floor
Main purpose: Tour of America’s leading active lifestyle agency (branding/marketing firm) and presentations by HDC staff to introduce the various roles & responsibilities in a creative firm as well as the lifecycle of a real-world project.
Learning Goals:
• How an agency functions
• What the roles and responsibilities are in an agency
• The flow of a project from start to finish
• How a product gets launched from an advertising and branding standpoint

Main purpose: Tour of MATC facility and visit severaldesign-related classes. Presentation about MIAD’s pre-college summer program.
Module 2: Project Kick-off at the Eisner Museum of Advertising & Design
Wed 2/10 1-3pm (CHS), 5-7 pm (UU/ONG)
Address: 208 N. Water St.
Main purpose: Tour of The Eisner (an interactive educational center focusing on advertising and design), and kick-off of design project. Learn about branding development & line logic. Break into teams & meet the professional volunteer mentors. Begin creative brainstorming.
Learning Goals:
• How an agency functions
• What the roles and responsibilities are in an agency
• The flow of a project from start to finish
• How a product gets launched from an advertising and branding standpoint

Learning Goals:
• Continued working knowledge of Illustrator, Photoshop.
• Incorporating photography and type intodesign. Where to find stock photos and free fonts. What are you allowed to use vs. copyright infringement.
• Reinforce team work – although students are working on their own individual designs, encourage cross-pollination of ideas and feedback amongst students, encourage them to practice roles of art director, designer, etc. with the other students in their groups. Start to introduce the idea of presenting work by having teams show off their work in progress to other teams.

Main purpose: High-level introduction to interactivedesign, particularly html emails.
Module 7: Discovery World
Wed 4/14, 1-3pm (CHS), 5-7pm (UU/ONG)
Address: Pier Wisconsin, 500 N Harbor Dr.
Main purpose: Quick tour and working session. Hands-on projects after demonstration of silk-screening equipment. An Art Director will describe her role at Discovery World. Continue working in the computer lab on student designs. Note: One design to be chosen by students & volunteers to be demonstrated at PowerWeek 7.5.
Learning Goals:
• The silk screening process.
• Real life examples from an Art Director of an in-house creative department.
Power Week 7.5 at Brew City Promotions (to be confirmed)

Main purpose: Tour of Brew City screen printing facility.This may influence students to begin revising designs at Module Eight as they can better visualize how designs look in context of silkscreen printing. One design chosen during Module Seven to be demonstrated on press.

Main purpose: C2GPS instructors & volunteers to introduce Adobe software, basic techniques & tips.
Module 5: MIAD Tour and Project Extension
Wed 3/17, 1-3pm (CHS), 5-7pm (UU/ONG)
Address: 273 E. Erie St.
Main purpose: Tour the Milwaukee Institute of Art & Design. Review final sketches and begin developing concepts in the Mac lab using Adobe Illustrator and PhotoShop.
Learning Goals:
• More insight into Illustrator, Photoshop and any other programs needed. Review software tips & techniques.
Forms due: Students interested in applying for MIADsummer pre-college program (and scholarships) should turn in forms to Kari McIntyre on this date.
Power Week 5.5

Main purpose: Work session to continue working on Illustrator or PhotoShop files. Finding additional inspirations and resources, such as taking your own photographs, finding stock art that is free to use, or commissioning illustrations.
Module 6: C2 Graphics Productivity Solutions
Wed 3/31, 1-3pm (CHS), 5-7pm (UU/ONG)
Address: 222 E Erie Street, Suite 330
Main purpose: Continue working on t-shirt design projects. Continue learning hardware/software tools, and how to find design resources, photography, stock photos/art and fonts.

Power Week 9.5

Main purpose: Volunteers and students to worktogether on preparing final presentations of designs for the Eisner Finale.
Program Finale: Line Review Celebration at Eisner Museum
Wed 05/26, 6-8 pm [All Groups]
Address: 208 N. Water St.
Main purpose: A celebration of the participants’ achievements, and presentation of final t-shirt designs by each student & team. Students encouraged to invite friends and family members to attend. Media and members of the Milwaukee area design community may be present.
Power Week follow-up
Wed 6/2, 1-3pm at CHS
Thu 5/20, 5-7pm at UU or ONG (to be confirmed)
Main purpose: Post-program assessment,career discussion.
Module 8: Work Session at CHS (1-3pm) or MATC (5-7pm)

Main purpose: Allow students to continue working on finalization of t-shirt designs. Introduce collateral materials including hang tags and neck labels. Introduce the concept of an artist statement. Students should turn in requests for color t-shirt blanks (preference + backup) by this date so that Kindred can order blanks for finale samples.
Learning Goals:
• Extending the brand to additional materials.
• Discuss the importance of Point of Purchase materials.
• Samples provided by Kindred.
Power Week 8.5
Wed 4/21, 1-3pm (CHS) at MATC
Thu 4/22, 5-7pm (UU/ONG) at MATC
Address: MATC Main Bldg, Room M172(first floor, 6th & Highland)
Main purpose: Continue interactive design introduction, eg students who are far enough toward final t-shirt designs could work on designing an M:KE promotional html email. Allow students who need the time to continue working on t-shirt designs. Students who are closest to completion on t-shirt designs may be able to work on hang-tag concepts. Students receive assignment to write their artist statements / promotional sentences for use on the hang tags. These must be turned in at Module Nine.
Module 9: Work Session at C2 Graphics Productivity Solutions
Wed 5/12, 1-3pm (CHS), 5-7pm (UU/ONG)
Address: 222 E Erie Street, Suite 330
Main purpose: Final work session. ALL t-shirts must be finalized and turned in during this session to Kindred Market for final t-shirt production. Finalization of hang tag concepts (so that artwork can be turned over to Hanson Dodge Creative for final production). Collect artist statements for hang tags. Begin discussion within teams (led by volunteers) re: finale presentation.
