Snohomish County Sports Commission EventsInaugural Youth Sports Performance Conference, Nov. 14

Bring your family to the free 1st Annual Youth Sports Performance Conference set for Saturday, Nov. 14 from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Walt Price Fitness Center at Everett Community College.

This unique conference brings parents and their children together with athletes and sports experts to help enjoy and grow in sport.

The interactive fitness challenge will help youth measure their speed, power, and agility. The hands-on activities such as figure skating, rowing, and volleyball introduce children to sports. Keynote speaker Maui Borden from Proactive Coaching, LLC, will share concepts and tips about the role parents play in their children’s athletic life. Don’t miss the athletes’ panel with some of Snohomish County’s biggest names in sports who will discuss their experiences as well as answer questions posed from the audience.

The September gala event celebrated some of the most accomplished and notable athletes, coaches, and contributors. The evening’s award presentations were the Snohomish County Sports Hall of Fame induction, The Herald Man and Woman of the Year in Sports, and Collegiate Man and Woman Athlete of the Year.

Upcoming Major EventsPacific Rim Gymnastics Championships, Apr. 8-10, 2016

The City of Everett will proudly host the return of the Pacific Rim Gymnastics Championships at XFINITY Arena in Everett and Everett Community College.

More than 300 of the world’s best gymnasts from countries around the Pacific Rim will have athletes competing in men’s and women’s

gymnastics, rhythmic gymnastics, and trampoline.

Because these athletes will vie for spots on their country’s Olympic teams, a future gold medalist may be among them.

According to USA Gymnastics, the 2012 Pacific Rim medalists included several Olympic medalists including American gymnasts Gabrielle Douglas, Kyla Ross, and Jordyn Wieber, and Canadian trampoline athletes Rosannagh Maclennan, 2012 gold, and Karen Cockburn, 2008 silver.

Held every two years, the Pacific Rim Championships traditionally feature gymnasts from Australia, Canada, China, Chinese Taipei, Colombia, Hong Kong, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, Philippines, Russia, Singapore, and the United States. NBC Sports will televise the action.

Everett first hosted the championship in 2012.

[Pacific Rim Gymnastics Championships continued]

Youth & High School SportsYouth Hockey Tourneys, now through March 2016

Everett Youth Hockey and Seattle Junior Hockey are hosting a number of tournaments through spring. These tournaments bring in teams from Washington, Oregon and British Columbia and feature players of all ages and skill levels.

WTA Basketball Tourney Season Starts Nov. 7The Washington Tournament Association starts its basketball tournament season in Snohomish County with the WTA DiZel & SwiZZle Basketball Tournament for boys and girls, Nov. 7 & 8.

Then the WTA will celebrate the New Year with its 3rd Annual WTA/ESA Holiday Hoopfest Jan. 2 & 3.

WTA hosts two-day basketball tournaments for youth from fourth grade through high school November through July.

For the 2015-16 season, Lynnwood High School will host seven WTA basketball tournaments.

WIAA 2A/1A State Girls Soccer Championships, Nov. 20 & 21

Washington State produces excellent soccer talent and some of that talent will be on the pitch in Shoreline for the WIAA 2A/1A Girls State Soccer Championships. Shoreline School District is hosting the girls state soccer championships once again.

Four teams will square off to determine the champion in each classification. Last year, Silverdale’s Klahowya (1A) and Bellingham’s Squalicum (2A) finished at the top. How successful will the teams from Snohomish County be this year?

Mukilteo Turkeyshoot soccer tourney, Nov. 20-22

Mukilteo Youth Soccer Club is hosting its annual Turkeyshoot Recreational Tournament at Kasch Park in Everett.

Organizers are expanding the number of U8-U9 and U10 teams and providing a 4-game guarantee and participation mementos for each player. U11-U15 teams are also welcome.

Registration closes Oct. 31 or whenever brackets fill-up.

Now Playing: Winter High School Sports

Snohomish County schools in the Wesco Conference are moving into winter sports mode. This includes basketball, bowling, boys swimming, and wrestling.

A few teams to watch:

• The Glacier Peak High School’s boys’ basketball team is coming off a hot showing after last season’s run to the state tournament. • The Lynnwood High School’s girls’ basketball team is looking to repeat as 3A State Champions.• The Lake Stevens High School wrestling team expects a deep run into the post season after it dominated the 4A regional team championships last season.

Collegiate SportsNWAC Men’s & Women’s Basketball Championships, Mar. 10-13, 2016

The hoops will be hot at Everett Community College when the Northwest Athletic Conference Men’s & Women’s Basketball Championship Tournament arrives at the Walt Price Student Fitness Center.

This is the first time that Everett will host the NWAC basketball championships.

Organizers have changed the tourney format. Round one begins on Saturday, Mar. 5, with the number one and two seeds from their respective regions hosting the third and fourth seeds from other regions. Winners of round one advance to the Elite Eight at Everett Community College beginning Mar. 10. The format of the Elite Eight will be modified double elimination.

An additional change will be the inclusion of the men’s and women’s all-star games to the championship tournament. The all-star games will be played the evening of March 10 and there will be one sophomore all-star game for both men and women. Participants in the all-star games will be voted on by coaches within the conference and will be from teams that are not playing in the Elite Eight.

The conference continues to look at the all-star format and this one-year trial may grow into a more comprehensive sophomore showcase, which is currently done in NWAC baseball and softball.

Winter Collegiate Sports Now Playing!Everett and Edmonds Community Colleges are getting ready for the men’s and women’s basketball season.

The schools’ teams engage in a “Civil War” for the first time on Jan. 13, 2016 and then again Feb. 10. Both games are double-headers for each school.

Pro SportsEverett Silvertips Off to Fast Start in 2015-16 Season

Now in their thirteenth year, the Everett Silvertips hockey club are in hot pursuit of season glory. The ‘Tips are coming off of their most successful season since 2006-07 and have a number of promising young players on their roster.

Fans will enjoy a variety of themed promotions including “Signature Saturdays” presented by Mountain Pacific Bank. Following every Saturday

home game, four Silvertips players will be on the concourse signing autographs and posing for pictures.

Everett AquaSox Exciting Season Ends Yet Ready for 2016

The Everett AquaSox wrapped up another heart-pumping season, packed with hits, runs and plenty of fun.

The team finished atop of the Northwest League North division with a record of 42 wins and 34 losses. This was good enough to clinch a first round berth in playoffs. Ultimately the team fell to arch rival Tri-Cities Dust Devils in a hotly contest match-up.

[Everett AquaSox Exciting Season Ends Yet Ready for 2016 continued]

The team is looking to 2016 with hopes of a deeper post-season run and, ultimately, to bring home the championship.

The Northwest League released its 2016 schedule. The AquaSox will open their season on the road against the Tri-City Dust Devils in Pasco on Friday, June 17. The first home game is set for Thursday, June 23 against the Boise Hawks.

The 5th Annual Ernie Dutton Table Tennis Tournament is set for Nov. 7 & 8 at the Carl Gipson Senior Center in downtown Everett.

This tournament for players 50 years of age and older features men’s singles, women’s singles, men’s doubles, women’s singles, and mixed doubles divisions.

Washington Indoor FITA Championships, Nov. 13-15

Archers aged eight through over 80 will compete for top honors at the 2015 Washington Indoor FITA Championships. The USA Archery-sanctioned competition is comprised of two FITA I rounds.

The Nock Point will host the competition in Mountlake Terrace.

Mukilteo Turkey Trot, Nov. 26

Start burning calories before the big feast by running, jogging or walking Snohomish Running Company’s first ever Mukilteo Turkey Trot 5K or 10k on Thanksgiving morning. The closed-road course starts and

ends at Kamiak High School.

The overall female and male winners in the High School Challenge 5K run each receive a $200 donation to their high school booster club along with a trophy and swag.

The overall female and male 10K winners each receive a $250 cash prize. The top three finishers in all age groups will take home a pumpkin pie.

All participants receive a personalized race bib, chip timing, swag, and a commemorative medal upon crossing the finish line.

Lake Stevens Hosts Powerlifting Competition, Dec. 5The Team Phoinix Holiday Classic power lifting competition, open to individuals and teams, will take place at the Team Fitness and Wellness Center.

Powerlifting is a form of competitive weightlifting in which contestants attempt three types of lift in a set sequence.
