ADVENT

Advent has a twofold character. It is firstly a season toprepare for Christmas, when Christ’s first coming to us isremembered, and secondly a season when thatremembrance directs the mind and heart to await Christ’sSecond Coming at the end of time. Advent is thus a periodof devout and joyful expectation. (LY 39)

During Advent, the playing of the organ and other musicalinstruments and the decoration of the altar with flowersshould be done in a moderate manner, as is consonantwith the character of the season, without anticipating thefull joy of the Nativity of the Lord.The same moderation should be observed in thecelebration of Matrimony.

Advent from 17 to 24 December

1. The weekdays of Advent from 17 to 24 December takeprecedence over the memorials of Saints, which maytherefore be celebrated only in the particular form laid downby the liturgical books (IH. 237-239; JM. 355a, sec in thisOrdo pp xxxiii -xxxiv, no. 10).

2. Only when some genuine need or pastoral advantagerequires, it may be appropriate that a Mass for variousneeds and occasions be celebrated (IM. 374).

Votive Masses and daily Masses for the Dead are prohibited(IM.381).

3. In the Liturgy of Hours :

a) The Invitatory antiphon, the Hymns for the Office ofReadings, for Lauds and for Vespers, are taken fromthose prescribed for the season.

b) Proper antiphons are assigned for the weekday psalmsat Lauds and Vespers.

4. In Eucharistic celebrations likewise proper readings aregiven for the days from 17 to 24 December, and theseshould be used instead of those indicated for the weekdaysof the third week of Advent.

ORDINARY TIMEBefore Lent

The Church celebrates the paschal mystery on the first day ofeach week, known as the Lord’s Day or Sunday. This follows atradition handed down from the apostles and having its originfrom the day of Christ’s resurrection. Thus, Sunday must beranked as the first feast day of all. (GNLY 4).

The Sundays of this season do not celebrate a specific aspect ofthe mystery of Christ. Instead, they are devoted to the mysteryof Christ in all its aspects.

Note: On any weekday ‘in the year’, when the Mass is of choice.

the priest can choose any of the Masses found in the Missal,except the Ritual Masses. However, the following should be takeninto account

SEASON OF LENTThe season of Lent is a preparation for the celebration of Easter.The liturgy prepares the Catechumens for the celebration of thepaschal mystery by the various stages of Christian initiation: it alsoprepares the faithful, who recall their baptism and do penance inpreparation for Easter (LY. 27).

For Liturgy of Hours for Lent, appropriate Volume is to be taken up.

The Season of Lent :1. The weekdays of Lent from Ash Wednesday to the Saturday

before Palm Sunday take precedence over the memorials ofsaints, which therefore may be celebrated only in the particularform laid down by the liturgical books (IH. 237-239; M. 355a: Seethis Ordo pg no. xxxiii - xxxiv no.10)

HOLY WEEK1. In the Holy Week the Church celebrates the mysteries

of salvation accomplished by Christ in the last days of hisearthly life, from his messianic entry into Jerusalem, untilhis blessed Passion and glorious Resurrection. Lentcontinues until Maundy Thursday. With the evening Massof the Lord’s Supper on Maundy Thursday begins the EasterTriduum, which includes Good Friday of the Lord’s Passionand Holy Saturday - centered upon the Easter Vigil, andconcluded with vespers on Easter Sunday of the Lord’sResurrection.

The weekdays of this week are dedicated to the celebrationof penance, abstaining from celebration of the sacramentsof baptism and confirmation, since these have their naturalplace in the Easter Vigil.

2. The rites of Holy Week, that is to say the blessing andprocession of palms, the reposition of the BlessedSacrament after the Mass of the Lord’s Supper, the SolemnCelebration of the Lord’s Passion on Good Friday and theEaster Vigil, may be celebrated in all churches and chapels.

In churches other than parish churches, and in chapels, itis best that these rites be celebrated only if this can bedone worthily - that is to say, with an appropriate numberof ministers, with the possibility of singing at least someparts of the liturgy, and with a sufficiently large congregationof the faithful. Otherwise, it is best that these liturgies becelebrated only in parish churches and in other moreimportant churches.The Pastors should take care to instruct the faithful on themeaning and structure of the rites enacted in these days,and so lead them to an active and fruitful celebration.

PALM SUNDAY

1. Palm Sunday of the Lord’s Passion, a day on which theChurch enters upon the mystery of the Death, Burial andResurrection of her Lord, brings together the triumphalprocession of Christ as King and the proclamation of hisPassion. Both aspects of the paschal mystery should beexplained in the catechesis of the day.

2. The Lord’s entry into Jerusalem is commemorated by meansof a solemn procession. There should be only one suchprocession, to be celebrated before Mass on either theSaturday evening or on the Sunday itself. The people shouldgather in a lesser church or in another suitable place outsidethe church to which the procession is directed. The faithfultake part in the procession singing and waving branches ofthe palm tree or other trees in their hands. The priest andhis ministers do the same. The branches are blessed by himso that they may be carried in procession, and that theymay be devoutly kept in the home so as to call to mind thevictory of Christ as celebrated by today’s procession.

3. To commemorate the Lord’s entry into Jerusalem, apartfrom the procession, the Missal proposes a solemn entry, ]to be enacted wherever it is not possible to hold a processionoutside the church. This solemn entry is to take place beforethe main Mass, with the faculty of repeating it beforeanother Mass which is habitually celebrated with a largegathering of the people. The Missal also proposes a simple entry,to be enacted at other Masses.

4. The vestments used today are Red. In the procession the priestmay wear either the cope or the chasuble.

5. After the procession or the solemn entry, the sign of thecross and the penitential rite or the sprinkling of thecongregation with holy water are all omitted from thebeginning of Mass and the prayer of the assembly followsimmediately. The Mass then proceeds in the usual way.

6. For the spiritual good of the faithful it is appropriate thatthe narrative of the passion be read in its entirety, withouthowever omitting the other readings which precede it. Afterthe reading of the passion, there should be a homily, evenif only a brief one.

7. The narrative of the Lord’s Passion is read without candles,incense, initial greeting or marking of the book with thesign of the cross. It is read by the deacon, or in his absence,by a priest. It may be read even by lay readers, the part ofChrist being reserved if possible to the priest.Deacon, butnot others, recite the prayer Almighty God, cleanse myheart.... and ask a blessing from the priest, as is usuallydone before the Gospel. At the end is said the Gospel of theLord, but the book is not kissed.

8. Where it is not possible to celebrate Mass, there shouldbe held a liturgy of the Word about the Lord’s messianicentry and his Passion, either on the Saturday evening or ata suitable time on the Sunday.

THE EASTER TRIDUUMChrist accomplished the work of redemption and the perfectglorification of God principally through his paschal mystery, inwhich dying he destroyed our death and rising he restored ourlife. Hence the sacred Easter Triduum of the Lord’s Passion andResurrection shines forth as the culmination of the wholeliturgical year (LY. 18).1. By the celebration of the Easter Triduum, that is, of the Death,

Burial and Resurrection of her Spouse, the Church means tomake present and to fulfill the mystery of the Passover, thepassing over of the Lord from this world to the Father.In accordance with the tradition of the Church, the sacredEaster fast should be celebrated on Good Friday of the Lord’sPassion and even, if suitable, extended to Holy Saturday, sothat the joys of the Lord’s Resurrection may be arrived atwith alert and open mind (Sc. 110).

2. The celebration of the sacred Triduum should be held onlywhere they may be enacted with dignity and decorum (seeabove, p. 49 no. 2). It is appropriate, therefore, that smallreligious communities come together in more importantchurches, so as to foster participation of the faithful. Likewisethe faithful from a number of lesser parishes in the care of a

single priest should, if possible, gather in the main church of thearea to take part in the sacred rites.Where, however, two or moreparishes are entrusted to the care of a single parish priest, eachparish having a considerable congregation of faithful and thepossibility of performing the celebrations with dignity and solemnity,the parish priest has the faculty to repeat the celebrations of theEaster Triduum, with due regard for other norms.

3. It is highly recommended that there be a celebration incommon of the Office of Readings and of Lauds on Good Fridayand Holy Saturday, so that the Christian Community may meditatemore efficaciously and more fully upon the Passion, in expectationof the proclamation of the Resurrection.

1. The Chrism Mass, which the bishop celebrates with hispresbyterium, and at which the oils are blessed, manifeststhe communion of the priests is with their bishop. For atthis Mass priests gather and concelebrate, coming fromthe different parts of the diocese, as witnesses at theconfection of the chrism and as fellow workers of theirbishop, in whose sacred ministry for the building up,sanctification and government of the people of God theyparticipate. Thus is manifest in a clear way the unity of thepriesthood and sacrifice of Christ living on in the Church.

The faithful, too, should regularly take part and receivethe Eucharist at this Mass.

2. The newly blessed Oils should be borne with honour tothe parish churches. The old Oils should be burned or pouredinto the Blessed Sacrament lamp.

The reception of the Sacred Oils may suitably take place beforethe Mass of the Lord’s Supper or at another suitable moment.The faithful should, however, be instructed on the use of thesacred Oils and their efficaciousness in the Christian life.

1. With this Mass, celebrated in the evening of MaundyThursday, the Church inaugurates the sacred EasterTriduum, aims at recalling that last supper, when the LordJesus, on the night he was betrayed, loving those who werehis own in the world until the very end, offered his Bodyand Blood under the species of bread and wine to God andunder these symbols, gave them to his Apostles that theymight consume them, and ordered them and their successorsin the priesthood to offer them.

Priests who have already concelebrated at the ChrismMass, or who are obliged to celebrate another Mass forthe faithful, may also concelebrate at the Mass of the Lord’sSupper. In accordance with a most ancient tradition of theChurch, the celebration of Mass without a congregation isprohibited today.

3 Where pastoral reasons urge it, the local Ordinary maypermit another Mass to be celebrated in churches andchapels in the evening and even, in case of real need, inthe morning, but in this latter case only for the sake ofthose faithful who cannot in any way take part at the eveningMass. Care should be taken not to undertake any kind ofdevotion to the advantage of private individuals, lest itprejudices the evening Mass.

4. The Tabernacle should be empty. Hosts should beconsecrated at the Mass for the communion of the clergyand people today and tomorrow.

5. It is fitting that for the reservation of the Eucharist to servefor communion tomorrow, a chapel should be arranged inwhich prayer and meditation may be fostered, but it is alsohighly recommended that all be marked by that austeritywhich is appropriate to these days.

If the Blessed Sacrament is normally reserved in a chapelseparate from the central nave of the church, the place ofreposition and of adoration may suitably be set up there.The Blessed Sacrament should be reserved, however, in aclosed tabernacle, exposition in a monstrance beingabsolutely excluded. Nor should the tabernacle in any wayhave the appearance of a tomb, and the term “tomb” or“sepulcher” should be avoided, since the chapel of reservationis not intended to represent the Lord’s tomb, but only to reservethe Blessed Sacrament for communion the next day.

6. While the Glory to God in the highest.....is being sung,the bells are rung. From the end of this hymn the bellsare then silent until the Easter Vigil, unless the EpiscopalConference or the Bishop of the diocese for appropriatereasons decide otherwise.

7. The washing of feet, which according to the tradition forthis day is done for a select number of men, shows forththe service and the love of Christ, who came not to beserved but to serve. It is appropriate that this tradition bemaintained and its true meaning be explained.

8. In the procession bearing the gifts it is fitting that there beincluded the gifts destined for the poor, especially gifts whichhave been collected during Lent as the fruits of penance.While this happens the hymn “where charity and love...”is sung.

9. At the end of the prayer after communion, the processionmakes its way through the church with incense and candles,bearing the Eucharist to the chapel of reservation.

10. At the end of today’s celebration, the altar is privatelystripped and if possible all crosses are taken away fromthe church. It is appropriate that any crosses remainingin the church be veiled, if they have not already beenveiled by decision of the Episcopal Conference.

11. The faithful should be reminded to spend a suitable lengthof time during the night, according to circumstances of timeand place, in adoration before the Blessed Sacramentreserved, in such a way, however, that after midnight theadoration takes place without solemnity.

8. The cross which is shown to the people and proffered foradoration should be sizeable and of certain beauty. Theformula for the showing of the cross and the people’sresponse should be sung. For reasons of appropriatesymbolism, there should be a single cross for adoration butcare should be taken that the individual faithful are able toadore the cross, a feature of great importance in today’scelebration. The rite by which the cross is adored in silenceby the whole congregation as a body should be used only ifthe faithful are present in very large numbers.

9. After the celebration of the Lord’s Passion, the BlessedSacrament should be carried back in a simple way to theplace of reservation and kept there with the usual lampburning. The altar should be stripped in private, leavinghowever the cross and candlesticks. It is fitting that aplace be arranged (as, for example, the chapel used forreposition and adoration of the Blessed Sacrament theprevious evening), suitable for prayer and meditation, andthat the cross be placed there to be adored by the faithful.

10. Great significance is there also for popular devotionalexercises that are of pastoral importance, such as theStations of the Cross, processions of the Lord’s Passion,the commemoration of the Sorrows of Our Lady. 1. By a most ancient tradition, this night is dedicated to theLord, and the Vigil celebrated during it, commemoratingthat holy night when the Lord rose from the dead is regarded

as the “Mother of all holy vigils.” For in this night theChurch awaits in vigil the Resurrection of the Lord, andcelebrates it with the sacraments of Christian initiation.The Christian tradition has however always recognized itscharacter of expectation of the Lord’s eschatologicalcoming.

2. The whole celebration of the Easter Vigil should take placeby night, in such a way that it does not begin before theonset of night and concludes by first light on the Sunday.The practice of celebrating the Easter Vigil on the Saturdayevening at the time when the Sunday Vigil Masses arehabitually celebrated is to be censured. The whole of thecelebration is, moreover, so to be arranged that its natureas a protracted Vigil is safeguarded.

3. The celebration of a Mass without the rites of the EasterVigil is not allowed.

4. The Easter Vigil may be celebrated even in churches andoratories where the liturgies of Maundy Thursday andGood Friday have not taken place, but on the other handthe Vigil is not of obligation even when the same havebeen celebrated in a place. But the celebration of the Vigilis, however, compulsory where there is a baptismal font.

5. Throughout the whole Vigil liturgy, as also at the Mass,the sacred ministers should wear white vestments.

Tonight’s vigil should be so arranged that after the briefLuturgy of Light or lucernarium (which is the first partof the Vigil), the Church meditates on the marvels the LordGod wrought for his people from the very beginning andstrengthens by his Word and his promise (the second partof the Vigil, or Liturgy of the Word), until the moment whenwith the approaching Day of the Resurrection, togetherwith her new members reborn in baptism (third part), sheis called to the table which the Lord spread out for his peopleby means of his Death and Resurrection (Fourth part).

The whole Easter Vigil proceeds by means of symbols andrites which call for a certain grandeur and dignity, in orderthat the faithful may grasp their meaning, prompted evenby the words of the commentaries, invitations and prayers.It is fitting in particular that the faithful be introduced bymeans of a brief introduction to the understanding of thetypological meaning of the Old Testament readingsproclaimed during the Vigil,

11. The Baptismal liturgy of the Easter Vigil reaches its fullestform when the baptism of adults, or at least of children,is celebrated. However, even when the sacrament ofbaptism is not celebrated, in parish churches the baptismalwater should be blessed. In cases where there are neitherbaptisms nor blessing of the font, the sacrament of baptismshould be recalled by the blessing of water, with which thefaithful are then sprinkled after having renewed theirbaptismal promises.

The Church celebrates the paschal mystery on the first day ofeach week, known as the Lord’s Day or Sunday. This followsa tradition handed down from the apostles and having its originfrom the day of Christ’s resurrection. Thus, Sunday must beranked as the first feast day of all. (GNLY 4).

The Sundays of this season do not celebrate a specific aspectof the mystery of Christ. Instead, they are devoted to themystery of Christ in all its aspects.

1. The weekdays of Advent from 17 to 24 December takeprecedence over the memorials of Saints, which maytherefore be celebrated only in the particular form laid downby the liturgical books (IH. 237-239; JM. 355a, sec in thisOrdo pp xxxiii -xxxiv, no. 10).

2. Only when some genuine need or pastoral advantagerequires, it may be appropriate that a Mass for variousneeds and occasions be celebrated (IM. 374).

Please take note of the following seven ear-marked(universal) collections to be made in all our parishes andinstitutions separately, and to be sent to the Procuratorimmediately after each collection, without waiting todeclare at a later date. The procurator is bound to forwardthese collections to the respective national offices on timeand without fail, signifying our co-operation in the worksof the Universal Church.
