Dear Stella Community,

Broken Bay Anniversary This week, on the Feast of Mary Star of the Sea, Bishop Peter Comensoli celebrated Mass to mark the 30th Anniversary of the Catholic Diocese of Broken Bay at Our Lady of the Rosary Cathedral in Waitara. It was a beautiful celebration with staff and student representatives from the diocesan schools in attendance and I was pleased to represent Stella Maris College at this event.

Our relationship with the Broken Bay Diocese remains a significant one for the College. As one of two Good Samaritan schools in the Diocese, representatives of Good Samaritan Education and the colleges meet with the Bishop to discuss our shared role in the mission of the Church - educating young people in their faith and preparing them for their future as adult members of the Catholic community.

Five Challenges in Australian School Education Geoff Masters, in a recent Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER) article, outlined the challenges facing education today. The areas he considered critical to the discussion included:

• equipping students for the 21st Century • reducing disparities between Australia’s schools • reducing the ‘long tail’ of underachievement • getting all children off to a good start • raising the professional status of teaching

Masters states that quality teaching cannot be taken for granted and schools need to continually look for ways to improve. Since 2000 Australian students have demonstrated a ‘declining ability to apply fundamen-tal concepts and principles in real world contexts’ and there has been ‘a decline in the proportion of students choosing to study advanced subjects - particularly advanced mathematics and science subjects - in the senior school’, according to Masters. Schools are aware of the need to plan and work strategically to prepare students to meet the demands of external assessments, such as the HSC, and also prepare them for a future where they will contribute to society in a meaningful way through their work and community engagement. The Lead-ership Team will be considering the implications of this article as we prepare for the Strategic Planning week-end. School Attendance One consideration at this time of year is the impact of taking students out of school during term time for family holidays. The government has clear rules (NSW Education Act, 1990) that require young people to be at school on each and every gazetted school day unless given Principal approval for leave. It is worth noting that we do offer generous holiday time, three weeks in June /July and we finish this year with Presentation Night on 28 November to allow us to begin demolition on the main campus. Having said that to date I have had seventy applications for leave to take a student out of class for a week or more. I ask that you consider carefully the impact this has on the continuity of learning for your daughter.

Stella Maris’ Strategic Plan Thank you to the many parents, students and staff who have provided feedback for the Strategic Plan. This weekend the Leadership Team, along with the Board and Board Committees, will meet with our facilitator, John Honner, to begin drafting a plan for the future of the College.

Congratulations Congratulations to the Stella Maris Dance Company and Lyrical groups who took 1st place in the Jazz section and 2nd place in the Lyrical section of the IRBD Eisteddfod. Well done to the girls and their teachers for their fine performances in the competition.

Prayer to Mary, Star of the Sea O Mary, Star of the Sea,

light of every ocean, guide seafarers across all

dark and stormy seas that they may reach the haven of peace and light prepared in the One who

calmed the sea. As we set forth upon

the oceans of the world and cross the deserts of our time, show us,

O Mary, the fruit of your womb, for without your Son

we are lost. Pray that we will never fail

on life’s journey, that in heart and mind,

in word and deed, in days of turmoil and in

days of calm, we will always look to Christ

and say, “Who is this that even wind and sea obey

To all the wonderful Staff, Students & Families of Stella Maris

We are thrilled to share with you that today Royal Far West has been announced the inaugural winner of the $50,000 Rural Hero Grant – thanks to your great support!

These funds will allow Royal Far West to deliver comprehensive health screening of children aged 3-5 years, in geographically isolated communities of rural and remote New South Wales – through the Healthy Kids Bus Stop

program. This will help us reach approximately 130 vulnerable country kids who don’t have adequate access to the essential health services they need.

Thank you, so much, to the members of the Stella community who voted in support of Royal Far West in the Rural Hero Grants. You really gave us a great start to our campaign that we managed to build on over the two weeks.

Kind Regards Lindsay Cane

CEO Royal Far West

CONDITION OF USE - STUDENT OPAL CARD

I write to request your assistance in promoting an important message regarding the Student Opal Card through your internal channels.

It is a condition of use that students tap on and tap off at the start and at the end of each trip with their Student Opal Card. This is important to ensure correct patronage data is recorded, which is used to plan school special and regular route bus services. This data helps State Transit ensure adequate capacity is provided, so students can travel to and from school safely.

Currently, many students are failing to tap on or off the Opal readers when using their Student Opal Card.

To assist with future service planning, can you please advise students of this important condition of use so State Tran-sit can continue to provide effective school bus services in the future.

Thank you for your assistance.

Management at Opal

The school has received the following request from OPAL cards

MissionSocial Justice Forum – Mount St Benedict

“One to make a difference, together make a change”

On Tuesday evening, we attended the annual Social Justice Forum in order to meet with like-minded students from around Sydney and connect with community organisations who work for justice such as Catholic Care, Wayside Chap-el, Stop the Traffik, Catholic Earthcare and Caritas. Students were challenged to make a personal stand against injus-tice and equipped with practical ways to make a contribution.

The Year 12 Social Justice Captains are already arranging volunteers to sign up for local community service in partner-ship with organisations on the Northern Beaches. If you are interested in getting involved, please contact [email protected]

What some of the girls had to say about the forum:

Spending the afternoon at the event really opened up our eyes to what is going on in the world. We learnt about all dif-ferent issues and many different organisations with what they did and how we can help. There were 500 other students and we all got to talk to each of them and find out their views on how we can all help to make this world a better place. At the end of the night we had Orange Sky Laundry come and talk to all of us. I learnt a lot from this experience. We would love to do it again. - Adelaide Irving (Year 10)

Prior to the Social Justice Forum at Mount St Benedict all I knew of the Orange Sky Laundry service was that its two founders had won Young Australian of the Year, however my opinion of Lucas Patchett and Nicholas Marchesi changed very quickly. From the begin of their presentation the two mates made a point to remind us that they were two very ‘average Aussie blokes’. These two average blokes achieved something that many, thought impossible. The Orange Sky Laundry organisation is a service that provides access to washer and dryer machines to homeless people all over Aus-tralia. The luxury of being able to have clean clothes may seem like an unnoticed necessity to us but to the homeless community it can be a doorway into different areas of life. Throughout their presentation Nic and Lucas made the point that to the homeless, appearance can largely effect the amount of respect and recognition they receive from the public. This ties in with Orange Sky’s three key aims: to raise health standards, restore respect and reduce strain on resourc-es. Orange Sky is not a distant organisation but really a community built mission that brings people together with the simple aim of providing not only a practical, self-esteem building service to the homeless but also a chance for people to come together and improve the lives of those around them. This is one charity that I believe should be whole - heart-edly supported and one that I certainly won’t be hanging out to dry. - Layla Zak-Volpato (Year 10)

Carolyn Collins, Head of Community & Social Justice

SportBASKETBALL On Thursday 26 May the Junior and Intermediate basketball teams headed to the Central Coast for the BBSSSA Tournament. The day was a great success with both teams winning their pool and progressing to the semi-finals. Both teams played St Joseph’s College in the semi-finals. Both teams were successful and progressed to the finals unfortunately the Junior team lost Brooke Smith to a sprained ankle. The Junior team played Mount Saint Benedict College whom they had defeated earlier in the day but despite a strong contest the girls went down 23-17. The Intermediate match was tight but the girls never let Mount Saint Benedict team get into the lead and won the tournament 20-13.

The girls displayed great sportsmanship all day. Thank you to Anthony Dignan (Molly’s Dad) and Beth Sweeny for assisting with the coaching. Many thanks to Ella Champion and Bella Allan for running the clock and scoring all day for both teams.

I am writing to you to see if there may be a student interested in a nannying job near the school. We live in Bonner Avenue and have 3 children aged 2, 5 and 7. We have had the pleasure of working with former Stella Maris students and were hoping to secure the services of another student for some work this term.

I would be grateful if you were able to pass the information below onto any girls who may be interested in the position.
