Dear Stella Community, I was invited last week to St Scholastica’s Chapel to celebrate the Feast of St Benedict and to witness the Sisters of the Good Samaritan proclaim the 26th Chapter Gathering will be held in September 2017. At this gathering they will renew their vision for the next six years of their ministry in Australia and overseas. It was a privilege to be there as Sr. Clare Condon SGS called on the Sisters to ‘step forward with confidence and with courage with the Gospel for their guide’. Please keep in your prayers members of our community who are grieving at this time. Ana Gonzalez’ mother died recently after a brief illness and the Economos family (Hayley-Year 7) lost their grandmother, Lyn Martin (Stella alumna 1956), a very active member of the Ex-Students Association. Mission

Carolyn Collins, Head of Community & Social Justice

Knitting ClubOver the last nine Monday lunchtimes a group of girls from Years 7 and 12, along with 6-10 staff members met each week to knit squares for a charity known as “Wrapped with Love”. The squares are then sewn to make blankets and distributed to the needy in our community and abroad. The girls skills have improved and we now have a number of finished squares. Many girls took their half finished squares home for the holidays to continue knitting.

If you would like to knit at home and donate your squares the details are below on what is required.

Plain knitting – cast on 30 stitches with 4 ½ inch needles.

Thanks must go to Trish Hobson’s (Finance Department) sister Enid Murphy for all the squares she has knitted. We really appreciate your support.

Knitting Club will continue throughout Term 3, so please join us every Monday in E211.

MINISTRY OUTREACHIn the second week of the last holidays Caitlin Andrew, Caitlin Bruce, Nina Longfellow, and Priscilla Wong volunteered their time to take part in the Good Samaritan Education program called Ministry Outreach along with 32 students from other Good Samaritan schools. They were also accompanied by Mr Smith, Mrs Burke and Mrs Silburn.

During this week, the girls engaged in a range of activities including visiting different service sites such as St. Mary’s Villa, Foodbank, Allowah Children’s Hospital, St. Vincent de Paul Osnam Industries, Salvation Army Street Level Community Kitchens and also participated in a $10 dinner challenge where they had to live on $10 for a day.

Here is a recount of Nina’s experiences of the week “On Ministry Outreach, I visited both St. Mary's Villa and Allowah Presbyterian Children's Hospital. St Mary’s is a Nursing home in Concord, and my group aided the staff with caring for the residents. We talked to many of the people about their lives and experience at St. Mary's. Allowah is a hospital with kids for intellectual disabilities. It was amazing to play with the children and talk to the carers. I had an amazing time at Ministry Outreach, made lots of new friends with kids from other Good Samaritan Schools and it allowed me to learn a lot about the “invisible” people in society, which has helped me to create more compassion and time for them.”

The girls were exemplary in representing Stella Maris College over the week and it was great to see that the parable of the Good Samaritan was in action as the girls did go and do likewise in helping others.

CurriculumENGLISH NEWSRead for your House – Term 2 resultsCongratulations to all the girls in Egan who participated in Term 2 – what a great result! However. What has happened to Wood??!! … remember that points earned each term contribute to the overall House points and trophy at the end of the year.

The good news is that Term 3 is now open – see Mrs Christensen in the Library to make sure you are registered cor-rectly in moodle, and then each time you finish reading a book log it in moodle. Students in Wood still have time to read LOTS of books this term and catch up to the other Houses. Mackillop girls might want to make an extra effort as well!

LANGUAGE NEWSYears 9 and 10 French classes enjoyed their excursion to Hemingway’s in Manly at the end of last term. There they spoke French with the French owners and waiter.

We all enjoyed a delicious French lunch, including the best crème brulée we’ve had in Sydney. The popular café is owned by a Stella family.

Japanese Speech Contest – “Tokimeki Cup”

The annual Japanese speech contest “Tokimeki Cup” was held at Manly Council Chambers on Thursday 23rd June from 4pm. Students from Mackellar Girls Campus, St Paul’s College and Stella Maris College participated in the contest. The students were judged by a panel on their ability to read Japanese script, Japanese pronunciation, fluency, and expression. From Stella Maris College, four Year 9 students, Lara Bannerman, Ivana Covic, Jesse Noone, and Victoria Yang participated. Stella students were the youngest contestants, however they handled pressure well and audiences were very impressed by their performance. Jesse Noone came third place overall at the contest, and Lara Bannerman received ‘The Joan Thorburn Inspirational Achievement Award’. Congratulations girls! Gambari mashita. Omedetō!

MATHEMATICS NEWSLast term, Mrs Bulman’s Year 10 Mathematics class enjoyed a visit to the University of Sydney where they participated in the Mega Maths Day.

The program was designed by the Faculty of Mathematics and the Faculty of Science and students completed a number of workshops that showcased a variety of disciplines and careers that require mathematics.

By taking a tour of organic matter to see what was lurking in the leaf litter, students could see how agricultural and environmental scientists measure the biodiversity and abundance of species in environments, and what the practical, real-world applications of these calculations are.

Students saw just how quickly computers can sort sets of numbers, and learnt about algorithms used in sorting networks and debugging.

Students made piles of sand resting on different geometric bases and saw how this mathematics can be applied to real world phenomena such as predicting avalanches, forest fires and spread of epidemics.

“The Mega Maths Day at Sydney University was an excellent experience for all of our class because it inspired us to think in different ways and taught us how maths is used outside the classroom. It was a hands-on experience and we learnt how to solve real-life problems using maths. The people running the day were vibrant and enthusiastic and helped us through the work that we usually find challenging.” Isabel Arnold and Juanita Murphy

Kim Naylor, Head of Mathematics

VISUAL ARTS NEWSArt Club for Term 3 will commence on Thursday lunchtime week 2 in D31. This term we are going to focus on a variety of Painting skills. Art club is open to Years 7 and 8 students. The Artmaking activities will be varied and are generally completed in the lunch hour. All are welcome. We are well aware of how busy school life is, so students are encouraged to come when they can.

All other Visual Arts students are also welcome to come to D31 on Thursdays at lunchtime if they need extra time to finish off their work or to have some extra assistance from a teacher.

Later this term in week 7, we will be gathering Artworks for the Bishop David Walker Art prize. The suggested, but not compulsory, theme is ‘Our Merciful God celebrating the Jubilee Year of Mercy’.

If you would like to create a work for this competition and would like some advice please talk to your teacher or come along to Art club for more information.
