DEAN’ S LETTER As your Dean, I am pleased to announce that our February meeting will be held at the Strand-Capitol Performing Arts Center. I will be joining forces with the York Symphony Orchestra which presents Classical Favorites conducted by Dr. Robert Hart Baker on Saturday, February 23, 7:30 PM. The featured performers include world-renowned harpist Yolanda Kondonassis and Gabriel Benton who previously won the Hunt organ scholarship, performing the Chopin Piano Concerto No. 1. The program will conclude with the Symphony No. 3, “Organ” Symphony of Camille Saint- Saëns. AGO members and friends can receive a 10% discount off the purchase price of tickets by giving the code: AGOFEB13 when ordering. The link to purchase tickets is www.yorksymphony.org/event-info.asp?id=28 Our Chapter will be planning a display to promote our Scholarship fund drive in the lobby of the Strand-Capital. The organ to be used will be a 3 manual custom digital organ designed by Walker Technical Company of Zionsville, PA. The console and speakers will be brought to the stage to create a wonderful symphonic cathedral sounding organ. The Buch Organ Company of Ephrata will be in charge of setting up the organ to include a Live at Lunch organ demonstration on Friday, February 22 at Noon. The Buch Church Organ Company are representatives for Walker Technology. Several churches in York County have Walker Digital organs. The Symphony No. 3 in C minor, Op. 78, was completed by Camille Saint-Saëns in 1886 at what was probably the artistic zenith of his career. It is also popularly known as the Organ Symphony, even though it is not a true symphony for organ, but simply an orchestral symphony. Of composing the work Saint-Saëns said "I gave everything to it I was able to give. What I have here accomplished, I will never achieve again. The composer seemed to know it would be his last attempt at the symphonic form, and he wrote the work almost as a type of "history" of his own career: virtuoso piano passages, brilliant orchestral writing characteristic of the Romantic period, and the sound of a cathedral-sized pipe organ. We hope to see you at the Symphony!

I just would like to find someone student who needs a piano. If you know of anyone I would love to give it to them. Linda S. Lopez 19 N. Russell Street York, PA 17402*

“EBULLIENT” MICHAEL BRITT ORGAN CONCERT TO INCLUDE BUSTER KEATON FILM Organist Michael Britt will present “From Carmen to Buster Keaton,” an “ebullient” organ recital, on Sunday, February 17th at 3 p.m. as part of the Tiffany Series at Brown Memorial Park Avenue Presbyterian Church, in Baltimore. Britt is Brown Memorial’s new Minister of Music and sub-dean of the Baltimore chapter of the American Guild of Organists. He will be playing the church’s 1930 Skinner Organ, Opus 839, IV/45. The program includes “Fantasia on Carmen,” and Britt’s original organ accompaniment to the silent film classic “One Week (1920), starring Buster Keaton. “One Week” will be projected on a screen at the front of the church. Also on the program are “Nimrod,” from Edward Elgar’s "Enigma Variations" and “Fantasy on Three Traditional Celtic Melodies” from Paul Halley’s "Outer Hebrides." Receiving its Baltimore premier at this concert is David Schelat’s "Organ Sonata," which Britt commissioned in 2011. Schelat, Director of Music at First & Central Church in Wilmington, is Dean of the Delaware chapter of the AGO. A frequent recitalist of classical organ music, Michael Britt is well known as a performer of theater organ music and is in demand throughout the country as a silent film accompanist, performing for chapters of the American Theater Organ Society and, several years ago, at the American Guild of Organists’ convention in Baltimore. He recently accompanied the silent film “Phantom of the Opera” at Princeton University Chapel for the fifth time. Britt has performed at the Cathedral of Notre Dame in Paris and studied at the Paris Conservatory with Marie-Louise Langlais. Interesting Organ Tour- Justin Nimmo sent us this link to a very interesting YouTube video of Martin Ellis playing and giving a tour of the WurliTzer in the Hilbert Circle Theatre in Indianapolis. You may remember that Justin played for SVTOS in June 2012, and he works for Carlton Smith who restored and installed the instruments. This is one of the organs that will be featured during the 2014 ATOS Convention in Indianapolis. (Starts with the Saint– Saens Organ Concerto) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LNh7_8AWwoc&feature=em-share_video_user

From Norman Selby ([email protected]) APPEAL TO MUSIC LOVERS TO SAVE AN INSTRUMENT FROM DESTRUCTION Your dollars (USD) are needed to help rescue and restore an historic pipe organ in New England, USA, that otherwise faces demolition. Until the church’s congregation left its 150 year-old-building, a large (57-rank, five divisions) pipe organ by the prestigious Austin Organ Company, with more recent additions by Andover, was maintained in optimum condition. But the church was recently sold and is being redeveloped, with no interest in this fine instrument and no purchasers, leaving this organ now facing destruction – the dumpster . THIS ORGAN CANNOT BE ALLOWED TO BE DESTROYED, AND YOUR HELP IS NEEDED TO SAVE IT! Once rescued and restored – with your help! – the organ will have a new life serving in another locale as a worship and public recital instrument imparting a vital community presence to the incomparable organ music of J.S. Bach and other great masters. Please make your contribution through PAY-PAL (if you do not have an account, I will invoice you through their system). Thank you for your kind consideration!

Subject: Recruiting at Notre Dame Greetings, At the moment I am recruiting students for our Master of Sacred Music program at the University of Notre Dame. We are extremely excited about what is going on here. The degree combines music (two organ re-citals, organ literature, music history) and liturgy courses. There are details of the program on the website: http://www.nd.edu/~msm/ There are eight organ students in the MSM program—four in each class. The program is extremely com-petitive (we had sixteen applications last year for four slots), and the level of playing is extremely high. The assistantships pay full tuition for two years plus a stipend of $12,500 per year for two years. Typically a stu-dent on an assistantship works in the Basilica of the Sacred Heart on campus. All students in our MSM program are supported with tuition grants. If you know of any prospective under-graduate students or others who are not currently enrolled in a graduate program, I would appreciate hear-ing from you. If you have any names to suggest, I am happy to contact them. Our new Fritts organ and organ hall are stunning. We have an eclectic-style tracker organ in the Basilica of the Sacred Heart that is also used for teaching, practice, and performance. You can see the Fritts at http://music.nd.edu/about/facilities/o-malley-organ-reyes-organ-and-choral-hall/ If you know of anyone who might be interested in applying, I am happy to hear from you. Or, give the pro-spective student my email address and/or phone number.
