PARALEGAL STUDIES PROGRAM
Dear Prospective Paralegal Studies Student; Thank you very much for your interest in the Paralegal Studies Program. Enclosed with this letter is information about the registration process at the College of Southern Nevada, the Paralegal Studies Program Curriculum, and information about the paralegal profession. If you do not already have a degree you will be enrolled in the Associate of Applied Science of Paralegal Studies Degree. It is very important to follow all the steps on the Admission Checklist and take the necessary placement tests for English, Math, and Reading. All Paralegal Studies Students are required to have a high school diploma or equivalent. They must complete the First Year English Composition (ENG 100 or ENG 101) with a grade of “C” or better and complete the Introduction Information System course (IS 101) prior to taking any LAW courses. You should meet with a college counselor/advisor to discuss appropriate course selection and credit transfer issues from other colleges you may have attended. If you already have a degree (i.e. AA, AAS, BA, BS) you will have the option to enroll into the Certificate of Achievement of Paralegal Studies Program. Official transcripts from your degree granting institution should be sent directly to the College of Southern Nevada Admissions and Records Office. The transcripts will be evaluated to ensure that the degree conferred is from a regionally accredited institution and contains 18 semester hours of qualifying general education courses. You will also need to provide a copy of your unofficial transcript to the Business Administration Department. The official transcript evaluation does not need to be completed prior to starting the Paralegal Studies Program, but you must initiate the process. After meeting with one of our counselors/advisors, be sure to complete the enclosed a Declaration of Major form with the proper degree code. The code for the AAS of Paralegal Studies Program is LAW A01 and the code for the Certificate of Achievement of Paralegal Studies is LAW CO1. If you need to transfer any legal specialty courses, you must contact the Paralegal Studies Program Director to evaluate those credits. The legal specialty credits must come from a regionally-accredited school, have been taken in a program that was ABA-approved at the time the course was taken, and must have been passed with a “C” or higher. If those criteria are met, we will accept no more than 9 semester hours towards our legal specialty course credit requirement and each course is evaluated on case-by-case for equivalency. If you have any questions or wish to speak to the Paralegal Studies Program Director please call 702-651-5954 or call our Legal Programs Hotline at 702-651-5866. You may also look at our website www.csn.edu in the search box type Paralegal Studies Program or e-mail the director at [email protected]. Once again, thank you for your interest in the Paralegal Studies Program at the College of Southern Nevada.

ATTENTION
Paralegal Studies Program Students Professional Portfolio Requirement
Keep Copies of all your coursework!! Why? The Paralegal Studies Program requires, as part of its program, that students complete a portfolio. The portfolio has a two-fold purpose; one, to provide a method for the college to determine whether the appropriate knowledge is being delivered and two, to provide the student with a collection of material to use as a professional presentation to a potential employer. What is a Portfolio? A portfolio is a purposeful collection of student work that is accumulated over time. The material reveals the extent of student learning, achievement, and development. The “portfolio system” is intended to specify knowledge and competence in areas considered necessary to successfully work as a paralegal/legal assistant while leaving the selection of means of documentation of competency to the individual student. Typically, much of the material can be compiled from projects and activities required within courses. When? Each student will be required to take Legal Research II, LAW 262, which is our capstone course. The final project required for this course will be the portfolio.
