This Month’s Message: "Every Sincere Effort Will Be Rewarded" by Rev. Tomozo Hirano

We are taught:“You are to purchase My sincerity.

Purchase My sincerity with your own sincerity.”

Anecdotes of Oyasama, no. 17, p. 233

Let us imagine that we are climbing a steep mountain to reach the summit. Panting and gasping for breath, we trudge uphill step by step. Looking up ahead, we tell ourselves, “Once we get to that place over there, the climb should be less strenuous.” Yet when we get there, we see a treacherous cliff trail. Once again, we rouse ourselves and summon all our strength to reach the next point on the route where we desperately hope things will get better. However, what awaits us there is a steep and perilous trail that seems endless.

Life can be a little like that. There are times when we find a new problem every time we think we have solved one—times when a never-ending series of crises seems to come from nowhere and with little warning. Although we try very hard to do the right things, somehow everything we do turns out to be counterproductive. We are facing an uphill battle. However, as counterintuitive as it may sound, there is no need to worry.

On the other hand, there are times when things seem to go smoothly even though we are not making much effort. At these times, we are, as it were, walking downhill, where we can use gravity to help us. We need to remember, however, that this is like digging in to our savings, which we have worked so hard to build up.

A steep uphill climb allows us to gain altitude quickly. Admittedly, we need to grit our teeth and give it absolutely everything we have. It is arduous and exhausting, and we may struggle for breath. Yet a world of delight awaits us. The higher up we go, the more we begin to see. Our line of sight extends well beyond our immediate surroundings. As we marvel at the spectacular views, we begin to realize that we have climbed up even higher than we thought.

The more obstacles we overcome, the more our view expands. The more effort we put in, the more we can grow as persons. The seeds of sincerity we sow will bear fruit, allowing us to live our lives abundantly.

Struggling with life’s difficulties is hard, yet we can also find enjoyment in it. Did someone say life is a series of uphill battles? Well, bring it on! we say.

Appearing before You, God the Parent, Tenri-O-no-Mikoto, I (Shugo Yamanaka) Bishop of the Mission Headquarters of Hawaii speak with reverence on behalf of the Hawaii Congregation.

God the Parent, You created us human beings and this world out of Your desire to see us live the Joyous Life. You received Oyasama as the Shrine and manifested the truth of all things, thus laying the Path of single-hearted salvation and guiding us toward the Joyous Life. For this we are truly grateful. Receiving the parental guidance of God the Parent, we are striving daily in high spirits to fulfill our respective roles and positions. Today is the day we are granted to conduct the November Monthly Service at this mission headquarters. We the service performers, together with our brothers and sisters of the Path in Hawaii, will unite our hearts as one in singing the Songs for the Service with sincerity and performing the Seated Service and the Dance with Hand Movements joyously in high spirits while earnestly praying for world salvation. As You watch us, we hope You will be spirited as well.

On the 28th of last month YMA’s 100th Anniversary Convention was held in Jiba. Many from Hawaii who attended this historic event to mark the beginning of Tenrikyo’s bright future were all able to come back with great enthusiasm and momentum from Jiba. And today we will be listening to a sermon by Rev. Zensuke Nakata who is visiting Hawaii for the first time as Director-in-Chief of Administrative Affairs to give us concrete tips on how to proceed from now.

Together we vow to accord with Your desire for all humankind to live the Joyous Life, and as instruments of Oyasama, we will walk firmly on the Path of single-heartedness with God, single-hearted joyousness and single-hearted salvation here in Hawaii. Especially, as we all continue to pray in earnest for the recovery of the Shinbashira even a day sooner, each of us shall ponder deeply over God the Parent’s intention, resolve our minds, and single-heartedly continue to devote ourselves for the tasks of the Path in Hawaii while uniting our hearts as one. May You, God the Parent, accept our sincerity, and we ask that You guide us further toward the advancement of the Path in Hawaii and the reconstruction of the world into a truly peaceful Joyous Life World, even a day sooner, where everyone will come to know of the Parent of Origin thus awakening to the truth of universal brotherhood & sisterhood and live together in harmony helping and caring for one another. Together with all present, I sincerely pray that You bless us so.

I would like to express my heartfelt appreciation to all of you for dedicating yourselves to the work of God the Parent. I am very glad to see all of you here as I attend the Mission Headquarters’ monthly service today. I would like to take this opportunity to share some of my thoughts. May I ask for your attention.

It was about 180 years ago, on October 26, 1838, that the Teaching began. After being settled as the Shrine of Tsukihi, Oyasama conveyed the teachings of God the Parent—who is God of Origin, God in Truth—and implemented the path of the Divine Model in the subsequent fifty years. We are following this path, which is also referred to as the path of single-hearted salvation that leads to the Joyous Life.

Reflecting on Oyasama’s Divine Model, we realize that the first half of Her fifty-year path was a period in which She was subjected to derision and criticism from those around Her. While conveying the teachings, She fell to the depths of poverty by giving money and other material possessions to the needy. She thereby taught us that by renouncing attachment to material things, one will surely become brightened in mind and will eventually be able to achieve the Joyous Life. Those who

were given money and material things were more or less relieved at least for the time being. Yet, there was hardly anyone who tried to make repayment for the charity that they received. It was only after twenty some years following the founding of the Teaching that someone brought one and a half pounds of rice as a token of gratitude for the blessing of salvation. It was only in the latter half of Her Divine Model that some people who had been saved by Oyasama adored Her and began following Her words.

At present, we have many friends of the path, with whom we can share our experiences of God the Parent’s blessings as well as our thoughts on Oyasama’s Divine Model. Compared to how things were at the Nakayama home back in the days when Oyasama was physically present, we are in far better circumstances now. Let us follow the path of single-hearted salvation by using Oyasama’s Divine Model as an

example for our life while savoring the joy of living in our fortunate circumstances.

Oyasama withdrew from physical life in 1887. Since then, She has been constantly working and protecting us human beings with Her warm parental love by virtue of Her eternal life. She is always there for us, right by our side and in our hearts, encouraging and guiding us toward the Joyous Life. How fortunate we are to receive such guidance from Her!

I love Oyasama. I know that you do, too. That is why I want to bring Her peace of mind and delight. In fact, I want to be recognized and praised by Oyasama for trying my best. That is my motivation. If possible, I would have wanted to stay close to Her and talk to Her in person just as our early predecessors did in the past. Although I know well that the situation back in those days was really tough and severe, I would have wanted to go through the path with Oyasama, if I could. But that is no longer possible.

Those of us living in this day and age can objectively look at the situation of the path during the fifty-year Divine Model, which I mentioned a while ago, as well as the intense dialogue between Oyasama and the early predecessors including the first Shinbashira, which took place just before Oyasama’s withdrawal from physical life. We also know of the development of the path in the subsequent years as matters

of historical fact. We also have access to a wide variety of Tenrikyo literature. Perhaps it is because we accept the things that happened in the past as distant from ourselves that we are able to understand them without being too emotional. Since we are able to ponder over those historical facts with peace of mind, we can perceive and accept Oyasama’s parental love, intention, and guidance that are contained in those events one way or another. On the other hand, our own faith experiences may not be as vivid as early predecessors’.

What if we were living back in those days? Could we have followed Oyasama as those early predecessors did, completely trusting in Her, despite the severe circumstances during those periods of the Divine Model and the Divine Directions?

I don’t think that Oyasama demonstrated the Divine Model of the Joyous Life for the sake of demonstrating it. She left the model path for one and all including those early followers, those of us following the path at present, and those who will be following it in the future. We must always strive to savor this parental love of Oyasama.

I believe that reflecting upon ourselves in light of the fifty-year Divine Model will give us an idea of what early predecessors must have felt while striving to bring themselves into accord with Oyasama’s intention as well as what it was about Oyasama that enabled the people to follow

Page 6: Origins - Tenrikyo Mission Headquarters of Hawaiitenrikyo-hawaii.com/origins/2018/Origins-201812.pdf · Origins No. 328 Dec 2018 First visitation by Director-in-Chief of Administrative

6 7

Her. Such pondering is significant for us in our endeavor to reflect upon our own faith.

Leaving aside the differences in times, standard of living, culture, or customs, we ought to simply ask ourselves what Oyasama would wish us to do. If we try to understand Oyasama’s intention by reflecting on our own situations in light of the precedents from the past, we can see how to accept the present situations and what to do to bring ourselves into accord with Oyasama’s intention and bring joy to Her. Only when we apply Oyasama’s instructions and words to our own situations can Her Divine Model be an effective example for us to follow.

Oyasama, God the Parent, and Jiba are one in truth. Being one with the Parent of Origin, or God in Truth, Oyasama provides Her workings each day by virtue of Her eternal life. Day and night, She continues to protect and guide all human beings throughout the world, Her children.

Moreover, although we have the Foundress’ Sanctuary in the Home of the Parent, Oyasama allows us to have Her medo (or symbol of worship) enshrined at the mission headquarters and other regional churches including those in Hawaii so as to make it easier for us to understand Her workings provided by virtue of Her eternal life. The medo also helps us feel close to Her in the course of our daily life. It is impossible to physically make a daily visit

to Jiba from Hawaii. Yet, Oyasama made arrangements to enable us to greet Her in person from Hawaii while She remains in Jiba. Thinking along these lines, we can see that we can feel close to the everliving Oyasama, solely depending on our own mind.

A s t h e D i r e c t o r - i n - C h i e f o f Administrative Affairs, I have been asking the followers these days to reflect upon their own progress in spiritual growth so that the Tenrikyo community as a whole can take a new, steady step forward, starting from the foundation of our faith once again, namely, making repayment for the blessings. Making repayment for the blessings we receive from God the Parent and Oyasama is what actually gets us going in our effort to respond to their parental love. When we realize how indebted we are to God, we will naturally try to find a way to respond to the parental love and the guidance of God the Parent and Oyasama. Only when we actually make repayment for the blessings can we progress in our spiritual growth. In other words, it is indispensable for us to make repayment for the blessings on a daily basis in order to realize the Joyous Life and to receive wondrous blessings as we follow the path of single-hearted salvation.

A Divine Direction teaches us:

You spend day after day, with your indebtedness piling up each day. That

Page 7: Origins - Tenrikyo Mission Headquarters of Hawaiitenrikyo-hawaii.com/origins/2018/Origins-201812.pdf · Origins No. 328 Dec 2018 First visitation by Director-in-Chief of Administrative

6 7

will not do. Osashizu, September 30, 1898

We may well understand how important it is to make repayment for the blessings we receive. Yet, unless we actually try to make repayment day after day, our indebtedness to the blessings of God the Parent will keep piling up high. If this continues, our prayers will not bear fruit, no matter how hard we pray for the blessings. I would like to request you to reflect upon your own life of faith. When I reflect upon myself, various questions come to mind: for example, am I making any repayment for the blessings?; do I really understand how indebted I am to God the Parent?; and do I perceive and appreciate the blessings I receive in my daily life? I begin to feel that none of my perceptions, thoughts, and actions is good enough. How about you?

Our indebtedness is related to the blessings we receive in the course of our daily life. More precisely, we are kept alive through God’s constant and unceasing providence. On the other hand, it is impossible for us humans to constantly keep offering thanks for the blessings without break. Yet, we can offer thanks day after day if not every moment. I think it is important for us to make repayment for the blessings to some extent on a daily basis. It should not be only a word of thanks but entails some actions. That

is why I mentioned that we should make repayment for the blessings, rather than merely expressing the gratitude in words. Since we are constantly given God’s blessings until the day when we pass away for rebirth, we need to make repayment for the blessings day after day. If I put it this way, you may feel burdened. I hope you don’t take it that way. We are able to live our own lives precisely because we borrow our body from God and are constantly given God’s complete providence each day. All people—including ourselves, our family, friends, fellow members at our church, and co-workers—exist, thanks to the Parent. Since all those people in our lives make our lives rich, we owe our happiness to God the Parent, who brings those people into our lives. In short, making repayment for the blessings has to do with our sense of joy. It comes from our deep sense of gratitude.

We human beings cannot keep on carrying out big things forever. Yet, we can try doing small things each day. God the Parent generously accepts our sincerity in continuing those small things each day. This point is clear from the practical teachings such as hinokishin (daily contribution), morning and evening services, and “contribution and dedication,” which we are taught to put into practice in our daily life of faith. Each of us should resolve to implement something concrete day after day in order to make repayment

Page 8: Origins - Tenrikyo Mission Headquarters of Hawaiitenrikyo-hawaii.com/origins/2018/Origins-201812.pdf · Origins No. 328 Dec 2018 First visitation by Director-in-Chief of Administrative

8 9

for the blessings. I believe that this is the basic stance of mind we should adopt in following the path.

When we try making repayment for the blessings, we can naturally be mindful of the everliving Oyasama and come to ponder what Oyasama would say to us.

The path that Oyasama demonstrated is the path of single-hearted salvation for the Joyous Life. This means that what is primary for those of us following the path is to implement salvation work. In the Ofudesaki, we read:

To Tsukihi, all of you throughout the world are My children. My only desire is to save you. Ofudesaki VIII:4

Those of us Yoboku are to respond to this intention of God the Parent by striving to help save others.

It goes without saying that carrying out salvation work means working with other people. We naturally hope that our salvation work will bear fruit. Not all cases of our salvation work have to be so serious as to involve critical diseases or complicated troubles. Salvation work can be as small as proactively talking to those with a slight illness or small trouble. If you pay careful attention to those around you, you will certainly be able to find some people who are in need of your help. You will find a lot of them. Reaching out to them

is the task that is given to you by Oyasama. Please proactively reach out to them and strive to help save them.

Regarding the mind’s stance that we should have when engaging in salvation work, we are taught in the Ofudesaki:

Of whatever salvation, you are assured, because your true Parent lives.

Ofudesaki VII:101

If only your mind is truly accepted by Tsukihi, you will be assured of any salvation whatever.

Ofudesaki VIII:45

As these verse tell us, God the Parent, the true Parent, assures us of any salvation. Moreover, we are taught in the Divine Directions:

Sah, sah, single-hearted salvation comes from the path of natural spontaneity. On the path of natural spontaneity, it will not do to care only about your family or yourself. The path of natural spontaneity is called natural spontaneity because it is to be followed at length. Following the path of natural spontaneity entails going through a path of hardship, so I speak of the delight that lies ahead. If you follow a path of living in comfort now, it will lead to an entanglement in

Page 9: Origins - Tenrikyo Mission Headquarters of Hawaiitenrikyo-hawaii.com/origins/2018/Origins-201812.pdf · Origins No. 328 Dec 2018 First visitation by Director-in-Chief of Administrative

8 9

the future. Sah, sah, I teach the truth of natural spontaneity, which can delight everyone.

Osashizu, August 17, 1888

The path of single-hearted salvation is the path of natural spontaneity. We should resolve to follow the path of natural spontaneity. Although such a path can be severe and trying, it is the path of natural spontaneity, meaning that it is the path that we should follow to reach the path that is full of delight.

We are also taught in the Ofudesaki:

Ponder from your innermost heart to understand. Through saving others, you will be saved. Ofudesaki III:47

We can go through difficulties in salvation work because we believe in the path through which we ourselves will eventually be saved. In Anecdotes of Oyasama, we find the following anecdote.

There was a man who had been drawn to the path and saved from his illness by Oyasama. When he asked Oyasama how he could make repayment for the blessing of salvation, Oyasama replied, “Save others.” Then he asked, “What should I do? How can others be saved?” Oyasama replied, “Earnestly tell others how you were saved.” Among the different ways to make repayment for a blessing, helping

save others is what brings the greatest joy to Oyasama.

It has been more than 100 years since the teachings of Oyasama were first conveyed to the people in Hawaii. The strenuous efforts and enthusiasm of many Yoboku, including head ministers, made it possible for the Tenrikyo community to grow to this point. In the present times, you are Yoboku who are entrusted by Oyasama with the tasks of single-hearted salvation in the land of Hawaii. Please take good care of the path in Hawaii. If you are to engage effectively in single-hearted salvation, each one of you needs to ponder deeply to work together to achieve unity of mind, and more importantly, you must always try to make yourselves and others high-spirited. I do not think that spiritedness builds up of its own accord. It is something we need to work on.

It is my earnest hope that you will keep your focus on Oyasama’s Divine Model with simple openness while always maintaining your awareness of the blessings you receive from the Parent. I even dare to request that you will take a hard way in following the path. When you do so, the Parent will surely respond to your sincerity and give you opportunities to grow spiritually.

I wish you the best so that the path will extend to all corners of Hawaii and will keep growing through endless generations. Now I would like to conclude my sermon.

Thank you very much for listening.

10 11

Last month, I was invited to a Halloween party a couple of blocks down from my apartment. At the party, I talked to a young woman who was living at a Christian church in New Haven. She was part of a service program that invites several women each year to live together, intern at a local non-profit agency, and participate in church life. So basically she was a Christian version of a joshi-seinen.

At some point during the conversation, after I mentioned that I was Tenrikyo, she asked, “What is your favorite teaching within your tradition and why?”

I had to stop and think about this question for about ten seconds before responding. At first, I was a bit puzzled as to why I couldn’t think of an answer right away, since I had so much practice explaining Tenrikyo to strangers during missionary work. But I guess no one had ever phrased the question in this way. People who have never heard of Tenrikyo usually have phrased the question as, “What is Tenrikyo?” or “What do you believe as a Tenrikyo follower?” as if Tenrikyo were merely a collection of beliefs. People within Tenrikyo have never asked me the question either, perhaps because we assume that we already like Tenrikyo as a whole and don’t feel the need to explain what we like specifically.

My favorite Tenrikyo teaching is the teaching of rebirth as it relates to salvation. In Tenrikyo, we believe that when we

die, we shed old clothes in exchange for new clothes. In other words, death is an opportunity for another chance at life in this world. Furthermore, the completion of our salvation, that is, the fulfillment of the world of the Joyous Life, takes place in this world. I am sure that you have heard this teaching many times by now, but I want to emphasize how interesting this teaching is. The concept of rebirth is not unique to Tenrikyo, for it is found in older religious traditions such as Hinduism and Buddhism. However, what is unique is the idea that the completion of our salvation happens in this world. There is no spiritual realm such as nirvana in Buddhism or heaven in Christianity to where we escape when we have completed our salvation.

The implication of this teaching for us followers of Tenrikyo is that we must strive every day to take care of the planet because this is truly the only world we have, both in the material sense and in the spiritual sense. We must take full responsibility for the way we live now because whatever problems and solutions we leave behind, we inherit them in our next life in this world. Although this is a lot of work, the plus side is that we do not have to wait for God, for God is already fully present with us in the world. Because life in God and life in the world are truly one and the same, we cherish our lives all the more. Our true joy on earth is God’s joy. The world of the Joyous Life is God’s ultimate vision.

So to conclude, I will simply address the question to you…what is your favorite Tenrikyo teaching and why?

The Holidays are approaching so I was looking for a festive recipe to share this month. Last month we had a few birthdays at my work place, and one of our leads, Arynn Ishikawa shared her mother’s sekihan recipe with us. I was impressed with the texture of the beans despite the minimal soaking time, and the ease of cooking it in a regular rice cooker. This really appealed to me. It is a festive dish normally served as a side dish for the New Year. For some of us, our grandmothers or mothers make this, and I’m sure the younger generation will want to know how to some day. So I thought this recipe was perfect! I hope you enjoy this!
