Mahalo to our Davies Pacific Center Ohana!Since our last newsletter, Davies Pacific Center has supported worthy local
organizations such as the 27th Annual Hawaii Foodbank Drive, 5th Annual Kaka’ako
Community Cleanup, March of Dimes March for Babies and Special Olympic Polar
Plunge. We want to thank you all so much for your contributions and valuable time
to help make a difference in our community.
In a few months, we will continue the parking garage spall repair project. The work
will involve repairs to spalled and cracked concrete on the corner of Alakea and
Queen Streets. A swing stage scaffold will be mobilized and a safety canopy system
will be erected over the sidewalk to protect all pedestrian traffic. We will be sure
to provide you with additional information as the construction date approaches. We
appreciate your patience and will do our best to minimize any disruptions.
After a record-breaking 2015 hurricane season which brought 15 tropical cyclones
close to our Hawaiian islands, we would like to remind everyone to please take this
opportunity to review your business’ continuity plans for disasters. Also, if you have
not already done so, please visit http://daviespacificcenter.bssnet.com for helpful
tips regarding emergency evacuation, severe weather conditions and other helpful
emergency planning tips. You may contact us for user login and password
information or if you require assistance navigating the website.
We hope that you will find our newsletter helpful in providing additional
information and updates on activities at the Davies Pacific Center. We
encourage your comments and suggestions, so please feel free to
email me at [email protected] or stop by the management office
located on the ground floor in Suite 117.

02 | THE URBAN COLLABORATIVE
One of the newer tenants to Davies Pacific Center is The Urban Collaborative, a forward-thinking company that specializes in master planning, urban design, and architectural services. In lay terms, they help their clients turn an ordinary space into a well-designed place. A well-designed place is where people feel connected; it’s a place in harmony with the environment and culture, and it’s a place that is sustainable. That’s a tall order to fill, but The Urban Collaborative has a wall full of awards proving that, when it comes to “working together to make more sustainable environments,” they are among the best in the business.
Here’s a short Q&A with Pacific Program Director and Planner, Rena Schlachter.
You could have opened your first Hawaii office anywhere in town; what made you choose Davies Pacific Center? The location was perfect for us. We wanted to be in the heart of town, close to our clients and business associates. It’s great to be able to walk to meetings and avoid having to drive in traffic. We also fell in love with the building. It’s beautifully designed, has great character, and has a lot of history.
Can you explain what The Urban Collaborative does? We consider
ourselves an interdisciplinary design firm that provides master planning, urban design and architecture, with an emphasis on sustainability. The majority of our work is for U.S. federal agencies, including NASA and the Department of Defense. In addition to Hawaii, we have offices in Oregon, Texas, and Ohio. Our team consists of experts in a range of architectural and planning disciplines. We pride ourselves on our ability to work collaboratively with our clients toward innovative and executable planning solutions. The process we go through, called a charrette, is basically an intensive planning session, typically lasts a week or less. In this process, we integrate the goals and needs of all stakeholders in an engaging, efficient, and effective manner. The result is a design plan that works for everyone.
Tell us about some of your recent Hawaii projects. We recently completed the Master Plan for U.S. Army Garrisson Hawaii which included an Area Developement Plan for Fort DeRussy and a Sustainability Component Plan for Schofield Barracks. We’ve also done work for Joint Base Pearl Harbor Hickam and Marine Corp Base Hawaii. Besides our design projects, we also conduct charrette practicums and teach courses on master planning. We’re all
about education; being able to share our experiences and knowledge with others in the field is important to us. Our company's Principal, Dr. Mark Gillem, is also an Associate Professor at the University of Orgeon. We are offering an internship opportunity for Hawaii college students working towards an urban planning or architecture degree. If anyone would like more information on the workshops we conduct for industry professionals, or know of someone interested in an internship position, we’d love to speak with them. They can just call our office at 445-4339.

Ever wonder what the world would be like with no language barriers? That day will soon be here thanks to companies like TransPerfect, the world’s largest privately held provider of language services and translation-related technology. TransPerfect has offices in 90 cities on six continents, and employs over 3,500 people worldwide. They opened their Hawaii office back in July 2007 right here in the Davies Pacific Center, and recently moved from the 16th floor to a much larger space on the 7th floor. The Hawaii office was opened primarily to take advantage of our time zone, which allows TransPerfect to service their clients around-the-clock. As an example, a project that their New York office is working on can be handed off towards the end of their workday to the Hawaii office, where the workday is just beginning. The Hawaii office can then hand it off to the Hong Kong office, which in turn can hand it off to the London office, which in turn hands it back to the New York office. This cycle continues around the clock and enables TransPerfect to service their clients 24/7 seamlessly and effectively.
Here’s a short Q&A with TransPerfect Hawaii Team Lead, Denysse Sue.
What are some of the translation services TransPerfect provides? We provide a full range of services, including translation in over 170 languages. Our Hawaii office coordinates the production of translation projects that encompass everything from legal and medical documents, to business and sales materials, to movies and websites. We do written and oral translations, and also provide interpretation services. We work with clients worldwide as well as in Hawaii, including several tenants at Davies Pacific Center. We have a staff of 11 full-time project managers in Hawaii.
How do you manage to find the right translator, sometimes on a moment’s notice? We have a network of over 5,000 native speaking linguists, who reside all over the world. We have linguists who are experts in various industries, and all our linguists go through rigorous testing to meet our certification requirements.
What is the outlook for the translation industry? The demand for translation services has grown considerably in recent years as more and more businesses expand globally or want to attract an international clientele. And, it’s not just businesses. We do a
lot of work for legal entities requesting translation of legal documents, such as court case files; also, pharmaceutical companies needing to translate clinical studies or drug labels. The need for translation services is growing in nearly every industry.
Is there anything else you’d like Davies tenants to know about TransPerfect? We’re always looking to hire good people, and you don’t have to speak another language. If you’re interested in learning about new cultures and interacting with people from all over the world, give us a call. We also offer internship positions to college students working towards a business or communications degree.

Mahalo for Your Unwavering SupportThe Shidler Group enjoys being involved through volunteering and participating in community support organizations throughout the year. Current Position at DPC:
Maintenance, ABM Onsite Services
How long have you been with ABM? 3 months
Before I came onboard with ABM, I was on the maintenance team maintaining
a waste water facility plant with Veolia Water. Sometime after, I transitioned
to the construction field assisting in building custom homes in Manoa Valley
with Coastal Construction. When I met my girlfriend, she inspired me to get
back into the maintenance field because she helped me recognize it is what I
enjoy most. I am now learning the ropes at Davies Pacific Center and I aim to
progress within this field and gain a higher level of expertise, so that I will be
able to manage a facility of my own in the upcoming years. On my off time, I
enjoy bodyboarding, basketball and baseball.
CBRE, Inc. is proud to represent The Shidler Group at Davies Pacific Center. Matthew Bittick, Serena Longo, and Cheyne Mench look forward to assisting you with all of your leasing needs. Office, retail and storage spaces are available.
