Sharing Our Stories

We celebrate our workshop with Dr. Tuttle on January 27, but sharing our stories involves more than a workshop. Our stories have been put on our hearts by Christ and he sends us out to share those stories. We will grow in our relationship with our Savior by sharing those stories. You are invited to be a part of short-term small groups that are forming to reflect on what we learned at the workshop and to grow closer to Christ as we share our stories of faith and salvation. There are two different opportunities to be a part of a group: Tuesday evenings (beginning February 6), from 6:30-8:00 and Wednesday mornings (beginning February 7), from 9:30-11:00. These groups will reflect on what was learned from the workshop, reflect on the Gospel that we proclaim, putting that Gospel in our own words and what it means to relate to others as we share our stories. They will be 5-8 weeks in length, depending on the progress of the group. WORKSHOP ATTENDANCE IS NOT REQUIRED TO BE A PART OF A SMALL GROUP. While attendance at the workshop is preferred, all are welcome to these small groups. This is an opportunity to grow in God for the New Year and challenge ourselves to step out of the boat and into the path that Christ has set before us all.

Christmas Caroling Thank you to all who lifted their voices to celebrate Christmas and to those who wel-comed our merry band of carolers. Also, the hot chocolate and s’mores after caroling were a wonderful way to round out a night of fun!

Welcoming Our Savior Our Christmas Eve services were incredible. Thank you to all who worked hard to make that holy time of year so special through our worship.

HAITI TRIP DEADLINE The deadline to sign up for the June Haiti trip is March 4. If you would like to be a part of the trip or would like to learn more about the trip contact Pastor Leigh. An infor-mation session can be scheduled if there are people who wish to learn more. We have a great crew of youth and adults who are committed to going and we would love to add to our number. International mission trips are a way to grow in Christ and follow his footsteps by serving those in need. It will change your heart and life forever to be a part of a mission trip. Join us as we live to serve God in Haiti.

Mission Focus: Presbyterian Counseling Center For each month of 2018, the Outreach Committee invites you to learn more about OBPC’s partners in ministry. February’s focus is the Presbyterian Counseling Center (PCC). There are so many in this community with broken hearts or broken spirits. PCC offers counseling and support groups to help heal the brokenness and shine the light of Christ for those who are suffering. The fee for counseling is on a sliding scale basis so that inability to pay does not prevent receiving care. Mental health and wellness is one of the most important aspects of our physical and spiritual lives. We are proud to support PCC and the work that they do to touch people in this community with the love Christ.

Our Souper Bowl Sunday event is on 2/4 and is a wonderful way to celebrate the Super Bowl while reaching out to those in need in this community. Even if your favorite team doesn’t win, the real winners are the hungry of Ormond Beach who will be fed thanks to your donations. Thank you for your donations!

Please join us Sunday Morning Education Room 12 Class led by Jeff Sidwell, started 1/21 for 10 Sundays. Centuries after his death, Martin Luther is celebrated as an intellectual giant, a brave oppo-nent of corruption, a shaper of culture, indeed, as one of the most significant figures in Western history. Many people, however, are unaware of the events of Luther’s life that led him to make a courageous stand for the gospel in the sixteenth century. In this series R.C. Sproul provides a thorough introduction to the life and thought of Martin Luther. With an eye to the lessons we can learn today, Dr. Sproul traces the major events of Luther’s life and explores the gospel recovered by Luther and the other Protestant Reformers.

Backyard Bible Hosting Although we are in the middle of winter, our Family Ministry Team is already hard at work planning for our summer events. Would you be willing to host a Backyard Bible event? If so, please contact Pastor Leigh. This involves welcoming people into your home and providing a meal for us all to share. The games, activities, crafts and music are provided by the Family Ministry Team. But we need your help to host! This is a special way to fulfill baptismal vows to nurture children and live into our commitment to be an intergenerational congregation.

BE A DIVA

(Divinely Inspired Vivacious And Smiling)!

The group meets at noon on the second and fourth Wednesday in the Haddad Fellowship Center. Activities include painting, jewelry making, coloring, making bags for the homeless, and more. Growing to Know God, Spotlight: Women’s Small Group

We were created for wonder. Woven into the fabric of our humanity is an innate ability and desire for the wonder of God. Our women’s small group is exploring that wonder using Margaret Feinberg’s Wonderstruck: Awaken to the Nearness of God.

Estate Planning Workshop

Do you have a will? Is Ormond Beach Presbyterian Church part of your will? When you put the church in your will you are making a statement of faith. It is an expression of your love for the Lord and your ap-preciation for the way this church helped you walk the walk of faith in your lifetime. It is also an expres-sion of hope in the future that long after you are gone this church will continue to reach out and share the good news of Jesus Christ with new disciples that will sit in the very same pew where you once sat.

Please join us for lunch Tuesday March 6th at 11:30am in the Haddad Fellowship Center for an informa-tive program on Estate Planning. Will Akers and David Morgan will present information about why every-one needs to have an updated will and ways you can structure your estate planning to leave a legacy. Ormond Beach Presbyterian Church has been blessed by many generous members who have left a gift to the church as part of their Estate Plan that continues to support our ministry. Those who attend this luncheon will receive an Estate Planning Workbook that will help you provide a clear, precise record of your personal and financial information. Call the church office (386-441-0300) if you would like to attend this luncheon

February 11, 2018 will offer a wonderful opportunity to attend the 37th annual Merridy Williams Memorial Concert at 4:00 PM in the Ormond Beach Presbyterian Church sanctuary! The concert is given each year as a celebration of the life of Merridy Williams who was a member and grew up in the Ormond Beach Presbyterian Church. Merridy, the daughter of OBPC members, Earl and Gwen Williams, was very active in the musical life of the church, singing, playing piano and flute and ac-companying choirs and youth musicals. Leukemia took her life at age nineteen while she studied at Stetson University, pursuing her dream to be a flute performer. The “Merridy Williams Memorial Flute Scholarship” was established at Stetson University after her death. The beautiful ebony Steinway Model B Concert Grand Piano was purchased in 1980 with gifts from The Merridy Williams Memorial Fund established at the Ormond Beach Presbyterian Church. This fine piano was fully restored in 2007 with a memorial gift for Anne Cording by her husband. The Cordings were members of OBPC and never missed the Merridy Concert. Their gift has made it pos-sible for us to continue to have this piano today, and we shall always be truly grateful! For the concert this year, the musical selections will be performed by Stetson University’s current and former music professors: Lynn Musco, clarinet, will perform Concert Fantasia on motives from Verdi’s opera “Rigoletto” by Bassi; Routa Kroumovitch, violin, will play Polonaise de concert, Opus 4 by Wieniawski; Alvaro Gomez, now Director of the Winter Park Chamber Music Academy, will perform on the violin Melodie, Opus 42, No. 3 and Scherzo, Opus 42, No. 2 by Tchaikovsky; David Bjella, cello, will present the Allegro movement from the Sonata for Cello and Piano, Opus 40 by Shostakovich. All of the performers will be accompanied by Michael Rickman, Piano Steinway Artist. As you see and will hear, the chamber music program will include a variety of solo selections, cul-minating with the Mozart Piano Quartet No. 1 in G minor, K. 478 for violin, viola, cello and piano. We are pleased to welcome these fine musicians to perform again at our church. They are truly among the best you will hear! In addition, the current recipient of the “Merridy Williams Memorial Flute Scholarship,” Savannah Yost, will perform a Brazilian piece, Evococao by Silva. The memorial fund continues in Merridy’s name, with gifts being used to provide additional funds for the “Merridy Williams Memorial Flute Scholarship” at Stetson University. Checks may be made payable to the Ormond Beach Presbyteri-an Church, designated “Merridy Williams Memorial Fund.” Celebrate Valentine’s Day early and plan to attend a delightful afternoon of music, fun, fellowship and food! The concert is free and will be followed by a reception in the Haddad Fellowship Center.

NEWS FROM THE PEWS

Dearly beloved members of Ormond Beach Presbyterian Church,

Because of Alzheimer's it is time for me to go home with my daughter, son-in-law and

grand children, and to live nearer to my sister who is not well, but I want to tell you all as well

as I can how you have impacted my life and enriched it and brought me closer to God.

On the handle of my hammer it says “I got hammered at OPBC”, and suddenly I

remember fixing up homes need of repair, reaching out to the homeless, and making & taking

meals for our shut in’s.

You have been a loving, and friendly community, caring for the ill, the lonely, and the

lost. I was raised in church and learned about God, but OBPC acts, not just talks about God.

The little errands that I delivered to the shut ins showed me the neediness of some people, but also

made me more aware of the needy and more thankful for the love of God.

You have been a warm home and I will remember you all and love for this church and feel

blessed for what I learned at OBPC.

See you in heaven someday, with love

Jeanette Zort

Many warm thanks to pastors Dr. Foley and Leigh Jones, Colleen Sidwell who

met me in the hallway before surgery, scrubbed in on my procedure, and kept

careful watch that everything went well, and all of you who thought of me,

prayed for me, sent cards and gifts, called and visited me during my hip replacement ad-

venture. All has gone unbelievably smoothly, and I am steadily growing stronger, more sta-

ble, and having more stamina each day. I hope to be back with full vigor soon and to be able

to take part in the extended fellowship of the church again. With deep gratitude for the heal-

ing Grace of God and for your encouragement and heartwarming thoughts.

Mary C. Cooper

70th Anniversary

We want to thank everyone for the beautiful celebration of our 70th wedding

Anniversary on Sunday, Dec.3rd, 2017. Thank you for being with us, and for

all of your lovely cards and good wishes. Many of you worked so hard to make

the luncheon a success, and we truly appreciate you. Thank you for MORE

great memories to treasure!!
