• On February 23, 2016, Tuesday, we had the pleasure and honor to give a lecture on minerals in one of the oldest

and most historical schools in Greece, the Piraeus Ralleios General Lyceum for Girls , following the invitation of Dr

Dimitrios Kalaitzides , Director of Ralleios School.

In this lecture we mentioned issues related to the formation of minerals, formation of the rocks, properties of

minerals, crystal systems, identification of minerals , geological time, prerequisities for crystal formation , uses of

Minerals and Geofilotelism. For several years we have expressed the view that a lecture on minerals, precious /

semi-precious stones, fossils, should be simplified (as fas as it is possible for a scientific topic) and the presentation

must be accessible even to non-specialists , much more when the audience are students.

Black shale or carboniferous shaleBlack shale, also called Carboniferous Shale, variety of shale that contains abundant organic matter, pyrite, andsometimes carbonate nodules or layers and, in some locations, concentrations of copper, nickel, uranium, and

vanadium. Fossils are rare in the shale and either are replaced by pyrite or are preserved as a film of graphite. Blackshales occur in thin beds in many areas at various depths. They were deposited under anaerobic conditions, but theexact mode of origin is debated. Some geologists hold that the conditions were produced at depth by a stablestratification of lighter, fresher water overlying and sealing off from the atmosphere a more saline, stagnant layer.Others hold that the stagnant conditions were produced in shallow seas or in lagoons.
