Ensure all participants have access to the right equipment as well as internet connection and materials for their respective courses before beginning the program. All course materials will be posted online.

What is adequate technology? Ability to have conversation, interaction through internet or phone line.

Although the program will be offered through internet, expectations remain the same on how students will participate and interact with other students, reference “Code of Conduct” above. Courses will be together via internet, in order for participants to be able to share ideas, conversations on different topics. Students are expected to work as a team. Currently, most students are experiencing the same manner of instruction through their schools.

Exploring Your Future program focus: Awareness to the student on what is needed so they may prepare for high school.

The strand is led by AWSP. One mentor, who will facilitate their course/s, will be assigned for each of the participating students. Schedule to be no more than a 3-week program; current plans are for dates to be in July, and will be offered twice a day, morning and evening.

The planning for Dare to Dream events has been around the mind-set that it is being planned for migrant students, knowing well that migrant students have work, not only outside but inside their homes along with other responsibilities and ultimate goal is for student success.

There will be a practice session opportunity for students to connect with the universities to ensure access and connection is successful.

Confirmation packet to include: Program materials, schedules and the opportunity to check for connection. The Universities are working on assigning tech support specifically for the event.

WSU and UW will continue to offer Health Sciences Academy, planning on number of students to serve. Will be offered with mentor.

OSPI understands that with the change in program format some students may no longer be interested, and others might become interested. Please notify registration office on those students that are no longer able to participate and those that may. OSPI also understands that students may not be able to attend or apprehensive in participating, no worries, please notify MSDRS with cancellations so we can offer the opportunity to interested students ASAP.

Asked Questions During OSPI’s Migrant Education Office Summer Academies Videoconference, May 13, 2020

Question: We started on the paperwork for the original program - can we change the participants who might take

part? Yes, OSPI is working closely with MSDRS registration on those students who can participate, and which need to be added and dropped. [Updated as of 06/02: MSDRS has revised all the allocations in the MSIS Student Event database and all registrations have been reset. Contacts may now login to the database and confirm or add students to standby.]

If there is a standby list but students are not registered or on the standby list, the student may not be able to register for this year.

Standby list students: PFS will always be selected first. If the registration packet has been finalized for a standby student, the student may be confirmed. OSPI to work with MSDRS on what is the best way to fill slots, it could be students categorized as Needs or PFS in another district will be selected.

Question: Where to register? Interested students may contact their local school district staff to find out how to

register.

June 15 let us know if students are able to participate or changes to student participation in your districts.

Question: Does the May 22 Deadline for CWU AA onsite event deadline still apply? Yes. [Updated as of 06/02:

CWU has cancelled all onsite campus activities through the end of August. The CWU Academic Academy will be held virtually and the other online program timelines will now apply].

Questions: Do I need an iPhone to connect? No, an iPhone is not required to connect. If you have access to a

telephone line, online access or video face to face you are good. Other technology needed: computer or laptop, smart phone and wifii access. [Updated as of 06/02: Students participating will need to have the Canvas and Zoom applications uploaded onto the computer or laptop. EWU Academic Strand participants will need access to a graphing calculator which can be downloaded online at https://www.desmos.com/]

Question: Will other forms be submitted other that the initial form already submitted?

Code of Conduct remains, possible a form of commitment from student that will participate. [Updated as of 06/02: Contacts will need to submit the completed NEW Online Registration Packet for all confirmed and standby status students.]

Question: Will the students, those that attended online eventually have the opportunity to visit the campus? That

is our hope, (OSPI) may work with school district to have a university visit. As soon as we know, we will notify you. Maybe in Fall, Sept, Oct.

Question: Are the academies cancelled?

No. All academies (UW, EWU, WSU, WWU) will be held virtually. There may be one exception, CWU has plans to offer their academic academy on-campus from August 3-9, but this could change. A final decision will be made for CWU by May 22nd. [Updated as of 06/02: As of 05/19 all academies (including CWU Academic Academy) will be held online.]

Question: What are the new dates for the academies?

OSPI does not have this information at this time, and OSPI is working with the universities to determine new dates. The online academies will be in July, with the exception of CWU, who, at the moment, plans to offer their academic academy on-camp, August 3-9.

Question: How will we find out the new dates?

OSPI will email and send out confirmation packets by mail to the students.

Question: How long will the academies last if online?

The academies will be set up to take place over a three-week period. Since the in-person academies are long days during a one-week period, our intent is to make the days shorter over a three-week period.

Question: Are any of the universities still holding the academies on their campus?

CWU is trying to host the science academy on their campus, August 3-9. There is a possibility this could change to a virtual model due to their policies. We will know by May 22nd.

FOR RECRUITERS OF THE SUMMER ACADEMIES

Question: So, in the meantime, our task as recruiters for D2D students, should be ask the students who are

enrolled if they still want to participate online and if they are adequately technology wise equipped. What about students with a low English command? Are people available to help them in Spanish? Yes, planning for mono-lingual students has been set.

Question: Should I still be recruiting?

Yes. Continue getting all application materials into MSDR.

Question: What should we be doing as recruiters?

Connect with students to find out if they would still be interested in participating in the academy virtually. Update on Student Events Database if they choose to cancel.

When you connect with students, also ask if they have equipment needs such as computer, internet access, and phone, and communicate this need to the local school district. If the district is unable to provide assistance, then contact MSDR office at 509.439.2300.

Question: What if a student does not want to or cannot participate in an online academy?

OSPI understands that the online format and new dates will not work for everyone. Please make aware through the Student Events Database if a student no longer wants to participate. [Updated as of 06/02: All registrations have been reset in the MSIS Student Event database and district contacts ONLY need to contact MSDRS to cancel students who were confirmed or added to standby after 06/02 for the online program.]

Question: Is there a new application?

The same application will be used for all academies. Review the Code of Conduct with students to let them know these expectations remain in place during the online format. [Updated as of 05/29: A NEW Registration Packet will be required for all confirmed and standby students, and the packet will be released the week of June 1st]

Question: Will there be a new deadline?

Yes. We have extended the deadline for all academies to June 15. For CWU, it will be May 22nd. [Updated as of 06/02: See revised timelines noted in the 06/02 email available for review at www.msdr.org.]

Question: Since it is online, can we recruit more students?

Universities will not be able to host the same number of students for an on-site academy. The total migrant student list will be reviewed to determine if changes need to be made.

Question: What about the students who are on the Standby list?

If you have a cancelation, you may substitute a student from your standby list. Notify MSDRS with the change.

Question: What about students who are NOT on the standby or confirmed list?

If the student was not on standby or confirmed, we will probably not be able to add them to this year’s academy.

TECHNICAL QUESTIONS

Question: If the academies are online, what equipment do students need to participate?

Access to a computer/laptop, internet access, and phone. [Updated as of 06/02: Students participating will need to have the Canvas and Zoom applications uploaded onto the computer or laptop. EWU Academic Strand participants will need access to a graphing calculator which can be downloaded online at https://www.desmos.com/]

Question: What if students don’t have the required equipment, can they still participate?

Question: What about students who need assistance in English?

Express that concern to us.

Question: Will all the learning through the academies be online? Yes.

Question: What if a student has trouble connecting to the academies? Or does not understand how to use the

platform? The universities will be providing technical assistance to students. We will also test access a week prior to the academy, and trouble shoot for those with connectivity issues.

FOR STUDENTS

Question: Are the classes online or on campus?

The classes will be online. The academy will assign you a college mentor who will check in with you.

For students who are invited to attend CWU’s science academy, it will take place on-campus but this can change. We won’t know if it changes to online until next week. [Updated as of 06/02: CWU has cancelled all onsite campus activities through the end of August. The CWU Academic Academy will be held online].

Question: Who is a mentor, when will they meet with me, and how will they get a hold of me?

The mentor is a college student who will be meeting with you and five other students daily. They will call you by phone or with a video call.

Question: How long do I have to complete the work I’m given?

Three weeks.

Question: What time do the classes start?

We do not know this answer yet. A schedule will be sent within your confirmation packet.

Question: How will you know if I turned in my work?

You could ask your assigned mentor who will facilitate while in the program. The mentor is a college student who will be meeting with you and five other students daily. They will call you by phone or with a video call.

Question: Is the work hard?

Consult with your assigned mentor and express your concern in regard to your work.

Question: How do we know if we are on the standby list?

Check with the person who recruited you for the academy. They will be able to tell you if you are on the standby list.

Question: What if I thought I could participate but once I start the academy, I find out I have to work, have to take care of my siblings, bad internet connection, not motivated, etc.? Contact your school staff who registered you for the academy. Your school contact will notify MSDRS with the students that are no longer able to participate.
