IIl territorio all’estremo nord del Piemonte si chiama Anti-gorio Divedro Formazza, rappresenta il confi ne geografi co e naturale con la Svizzera, che da qui si raggiunge rapi-damente attraversando la Val Divedro, dove il Tunnel e il Colle del Sempione, tagliano il confi ne.Il territorio della Comunità Montana è ricco dal punto di vista storico, culturale e paesaggistico, di una gamma di ambienti intatti e genuini come il Parco Veglia/Devero, che ne fanno un luogo di grande attrattiva turistica e sportiva. La Comunità Montana costituita da 8 comuni, parte a Cre-voladossola, borgo di origine romana con la cinquecente-sca chiesa dei Santi Pietro e Paolo, dotata di belle vetrate di scuola nordica.Montecrestese è noto per il campanile seicentesco, che è il più alto dell’Ossola (67 m e 33cm), costruito su uno spero-ne roccioso domina l’anfi teatro inferiore della valle. Trasquera è un caratteristico villaggio alpestre a ridosso del confi ne elvetico.Varzo ultimo paese prima della Svizzera è ricco di carat-teristiche frazioni e di angoli suggestivi dominati dalla torre medievale. Crodo è famosa in tutto il mondo per l’industria delle ac-que minerali e degli aperitivi, possiede suggestive frazioni, dai nomi insoliti: Mozzio, Cravegna e Viceno dove si può visitare la “Casa museo della montagna” (interessante mu-seo di etnologia alpina).Baceno possiede la parrocchia romanica di San Gauden-zio, che è da tempo monumento nazionale e salendo di quota da questo Comune si raggiunge l’Alpe Devero, con-ca alpina naturale di grande suggestione paesaggistica .Premia è invece famosa per gli “Orridi”, profonde forre scavate dal millenario defl uire delle acque e l’incantato villaggio di Salecchio, che conserva le memorie dell’an-tica civiltà delle popolazioni Walser, emigrata nel XIII sec. dal Vallese. Questa minoranza etnica è ancora viva a For-mazza con l’architettura tipica in legno, i costumi, le tradi-zioni e la lingua tedesca. Ma lo spettacolo più grandioso e indimenticabile è quello della Cascata del Toce, il “più bel salto delle Alpi” (143 metri).La Valle ricca di acque termali è un luogo privilegiato per le cure ed il benessere, a Crodo dove si trovano le omoni-me terme, e a Premia, un nuovo e moderno centro per le cure termali, funziona con acque naturalmente calde che sgorgano dal sottosuolo.Nei numerosi alberghi e nelle graziose pensioni si può vive-re un periodo di rigenerante relax alternato a varie attività sportive.

The land at the extreme northern tip of Piedmont is called Anti-gorio Divedro Formazza. It represents the natural and geogra-phical border with Switzerland, which can be quickly reached by crossing Val Divedro valley, where the Sempione Hill and Tunnel cut across the border.The territory of the Mountain Community offers many unspoilt and charming landscapes - such as the Veglia Devero Park - all rich in history and culture. For this reason, this valley is a very attractive destination for tourists and sport lovers. In the valley are eight villages. At the lower point is Crevola-dossola, of roman origin, where the church dedicated to the Saints Peter and Paul, built in the 1500’s, is located. The church has beautiful glass windows in the style of the Nordic schools.Montecrestese is well known for its bell tower, dating back to the 1600’s. It is built on a rock cliff overlooking the natural am-phitheatre of the valley, and it is the tallest of the whole Ossola region (67,33meters).Trasquera is a typical alpine village, very close to the Swiss border.Varzo, the last village before reaching Switzerland, is rich in characteristic and picturesque small sections, dominated by the medieval tower.Crodo is famous all over the world for its mineral waters and aperitif company. The village is composed of several quaint sections with rather unusual names: Mozzio, Cravegna and Vi-ceno, which hosts the ‘House-museum of the mountain’, an interesting museum of alpine ethnology, open to the public. Baceno hosts the Romanic church of San Gaudenzio that has been declared a national monument.Premia is well known for its ‘Orridi’, deep gorges excavated by the millenary fl owing of water, and for the enchanted Salec-chio village, preserving the heritage of the ancient civilization of the Walser people, migrated in the 13th century from the Vallese valley This ethnic minority is still alive in Formazza, throu-gh the typical wooden architecture, and its people’s customs, traditions and use of the German language.The most grandiose and breathtaking view is certainly at the Cascata del Toce waterfalls, the ‘most beautiful jump in the Alps’ (143 meters).The valley is rich in hot springs and is a special place for well being and healing. Well known are the baths at Crodo, and the new modern spa at Premia, that uses the natural hot wa-ters that fl ow from under the earth.Many hotels and quaint ‘pensioni’ offer visitors different kinds of accommodations so that everybody can spend time in the valley in complete relaxation, according to their tastes, and enjoy also the many sport activities offered.

Das Territorium im aller noerdlichsten Teil von Piemont nennt man Antigoro Divedro Formazza, und es stellt die geografi sche und natuerliche Grenze mit der Schweiz dar, die man rasch erreicht, das Val Divedro-Tal ueberquerend, wo der Tunnel und der Pass des Sempione die Grenze durchschneiden.Das Territorium der Berggemeinde ist in historischer, kulturel-ler und landschafl icher Hinsicht reich an einer Palette von in-takten und unberuehrten Ambienten wie der Veglia Devero Park, was den Ort zu einer grossen touristischen und sportlichen Attraktion macht. Das Tal wird aus 8 Gemeinden gebildet, be-ginnend mit Crevoladossola, Ortschaft roemischer Herkunft mit der Kirche der Heiligen Peter und Paul, ausgestattet mit schoe-nen Glasfenstern nordischer Schule.Montecrestese ist bekannt fuer seinen Glockenturm aus dem 16. Jh. Aus dem Vallese emigriert sind, wachhaelt. Diese ethnische Minderheit ist in For-mazzo noch lebendig mit der typischen Holzarchitektur, den Trachten, den Traditionen und der deutschen Sprache. Aber am grandiosesten und unvergesslichsten ist das Schauspiel, welches die Kaskade von Toce bietet, das “schoenste Gefa-elle der Alpen” (143 m).Das Tal, reich an Thermalwassern, ist ein bevorzugter Ort fuer Erholungs- und Heilkuren. In Crodo, wo sich die gleichnamigen Thermen befi nden, und in Premia, eiem neuen und modernen Centrum fuer Thermalkuren, funktionieren die Baeder mit na-tuerlich warmen Wassern, die von unter der Erde an die Ober-fl aeche sprudeln. In den zahlreichen Herbergen und den huebschen Pensionen kann man eine Woche von regenerierendem Relax, im Wech-sel mit verschiedenen sportlichen Aktivitaeten, erleben.

Hot spring treatmentsAt 800 metres above sea level and only 20 km from the international train station of Domodos-sola, Premia is becoming the most important hot springs centre in Upper Piedmont.A recently constructed modern spa with a hot springs complex offers a variety of treatments for many different pathologies with saunas, indoor and outdoor pools, a gymnasium and fi tness fa-cilities. The natural hot springs are classifi ed as hyper-thermal and contain calcium sulphate in a fi xed residue of 180° per 1414 mg/litre of water. Il Rifugio Castiglioni è situato nella piana del De-vero. E’ un importante appoggio per le ascensioni della zona, per gli impianti di risalita, per la pista da fondo e le passeggiate con le racchette da neve. Gestita da molti anni dalla Famiglia Galmarini, la Capanna è stata recentemente ristrutturata per dare un maggior confort ai suoi ospiti.

The Castiglioni Mountain Refuge is located in the Devero plateau. It is an important station for ascents in the area, to access the ski lifts and the cross-country ski slopes, and to take off on snow-racquets walks. The hut, that has been managed by the Galmarini family for many years, has been recently renovated to offer guests a better stan-dard of comfort.

Die Schutzhuette Castiglioni ist auf der Ebene des Devero gelegen. Sie ist wichtiger Stuetzpunkt fuer den Aufstieg in der Zone, fuer die Aufzuege, fuer die Langlaufpisten und die Spaziergaenge mit den Schneeschuhen. Gefuehrt ueber lange Jahre von der Familie Galmarini, wurde die Huette vor Kurzem restrukturiert um ihren Gaesten einen gro-esseren Komfort bieten zu koennen.

Presso la Diga dei Sabbioni, questo rifugio di proprietà della sottosezione “Fior di Roccia” del CAi di Milano, sorge a mt. 2505 in un punto molto panoramico. Completamente arredato, stufa a legno nella sala da pranzo, offre un ambiente cal-do e familiare dove si può ancora respirare l’atmo-sfera particolare di un rifugio di montagna.

Located near the Sabbioni Dam, this mountain refuge belongs to the sub-section “Fior di Roccia” of the Italian Alpine Club (CAI) of Milan. It is loca-ted at a height of 2505 meters, in a very panoramic spot. The refuge is completely furnished, has a wood stove in the dining room and offers a warm and family-like environment, in which the very spe-cial atmosphere of a real mountain refuge is still intact.

In der Naehe des Staudammes der Sabbioni, ist diese Berghuette im Besitz der Untersektion ”Fior di Roccia” des CAI von Milano, erhebt sich in 2505 m Hoehe an einem sehr panoramahaften Punkte. Miryam refuge is located at a height of 2.050 meters, near a wood in the Vannino Valley. The landscape is idyllic and offers the opportunity to discover a new spiri-tual dimension, surrounded by a warm and family-like atmosphere. The refuge is constantly being improved. It has 54 beds, and showers on each fl oor. Sheets and blankets are provided. There is a dining room and a room with a fi replace and shelves with books to read. The hut offers excellent home-style cooking.

Le due sale da pranzo dispongono di 80 coperti, nella parte centrale l’accogliente e fornito bar potrà soddisfare anche i clienti più esigenti con numerose etichette di liquori alpini, amari, grappe e vini. La cucina, in fase di continuo miglioramento, è tra le più innovative delle strutture di montagna.

It is located on the grassy cliff that overlooks the Van-nino lake and dominates the valley. The building has two dining rooms seating 80 people, and the cen-tral section hosts a charming and well-supplied bar offering special mountain spirits, herb elixirs, grappa, and wines. The quality of the cooking gets better all the time, and it is one of the most innovative of all mountain facilities.

Anche questo rifugio appartiene all’associazione Operazione Mato Grosso ed è dedicata alla memoria di tre componenti prematuramente scomparsi: Anna, Atti-lio e Alessandro. E’ una moderna costruzione in muratu-ra, che può ospitare fi no a 80 clienti, è dotato di ampio salone per ritrovi, incontri, visione di fi lmati. La sistemazio-ne può essere in camerette (famiglie) o in camerate (gruppi).

Like the ‘Claudio e Bruno’ refuge, this mountain hut also belongs to the ‘Operazione Mato Grosso’ associa-tion. It is dedicated to the memory of three former com-ponents of the association: Anna, Attilio and Alessandro. It is a modern brick building that can host up to 80 peo-ple. It has a large hall for meetings and to watch videos. Guests can sleep in small rooms for families, or large ro-oms for groups.

Questo rifugio Caludio e Bruno appartiene all’as-sociazione Operazione Mato Grosso ed è stato dedi-cata alla memoria di due ragazzi periti nel compi-mento della propria missione. Situato a ridosso del Ghiacciaio Strahlgrat-Hohsand, affacciato sul Lago Sabbioni ammodernato nel 1995, ha una capacità di 60 posti letto. È dotato di salone, terrazzo è luogo di partenza ideale per numerose escursioni.

The ‘Claudio e Bruno’ refuge belongs to the ‘Ope-razione Mato Grosso’ association, and it is dedicated to the memory of two young men who died carrying out the mission entrusted to them. It is located by the Strahlgrat-Hohsand glacier, overlooking the Sabbioni lake. It has been refurbished in 1995 and has 60 slee-ping places, a large hall and a terrace. It is the ideal starting point for many excursions.

Die Berghuette “Claudio und Bruno” gehoert der Vereinigung Operation Mato Grosso und wurde der Erinnerung an die beiden in der Ausfuehrung ihrer Mis-sion umgekommenen Jungen gewidmet. Im Schutze des Gletschers Strahlgrat-Hohsand gelegen, mit Blick zum Sabbioni-See, 1995 modernisiert, hat sie eine Ka-pazitaet von 60 Betten. Sie ist ausgeruestet mit Aufen-thaltsraum, Terasse und ist idealer Ausgangspunkt fuer zahlreiche Exkursionen.

E’ una vecchia costruzione di inizio ‘800, in le-gno e pietra ossolana, completamente ristruttura-ta mantenendo lo stile. Il rifugio è una struttura semplice ed accogliente, gestita da persone com-petenti e disponibili, con cucina tipica e curata. La gestione offre anche assistenza sportiva-monta-na in numerose discipline per mano di professioni-sti.

It is an old building of the beginning of the 1800’s, made of wood and local stone, completely restored in the original style. This mountain refuge is a simple and cosy structure, managed by compe-tent and friendly people. The staff comprises also professionals offering assistance in many mountain related disciplines and sports. In the kitchen typical dishes are prepared with care.

Die Schutzhuette ist ein altertuemlicher Bau aus dem Beginn von 800, aus Holz und ossolaner Stei-nen errichtet, komplett renoviert, den Stil beibehal-tend. Sie ist ein einfaches und gastliches Gebaeu-de, geleitet von kompetenten und hilfsbereiten Personen geleitet, mit typischer und gepfl egter Kueche. Die Leitung bietet auch professionelle Bergsport- Assistenz in zahlreichen Disziplinen an.

Il rifugio è stato reso agibile ristrutturando una vecchia casa walser risalente al 1645. La struttura, posta in posizione panoramica, prende il nome della località in cui è situato “in cima all’orrido”, ottima base per passare qualche giorno in tran-quillità, la cucina offre piatti dal sapore tipicamen-te alpino.

Die Schutzhuette wurde benutzbar, als man ein altes Walser-Haus aus dem jahre 1645 rekonstruier-te. Das Gebaeude, in schoener Aussicht gelegen, uebernahm den Namen der Oertlichkeit in dem sie gelegen ist ”auf dem Gipfel des Orrido” (Gipfel des Grausigen), ausgezeichnete Basis um einige Tage in Ruhe zu verbringen, die Kueche bietet Gerichte mit dem typischen Alpengeschmack.

Sito all’interno del Parco Naturale Alpe Veglia, il ri-fugio Città di Arona si trova su un’altura con vista sul Monte Leone (3.553 mt) la vetta più alta delle Alpi Lepontine. Dispone di 68 posti letto, servizi e docce al piano terra, una sala pranzo per assaporare la cucina locale semplice e genuina, locale invernale dotato di 9 posti letto con stufa a legna e fornello a gas.

Located inside the Veglia Alp Natural Park, the ‘Città di Arona’ refuge is built on a rise, and offers a beautiful view of Monte Leone (3,553 meters), the hi-ghest mountain of the Lepontine Alps. It has 68 slee-ping places with bathrooms and showers on the ground fl oor and a dining room, in which to savour the local simple and genuine cooking. In the winter, it offers a room with 9 sleeping places, with a wood-bur-ning stove for heating and small gas cooking stove.

Si trova all’ingresso dell’alpe Solcio proprio dove inizia il canalone erboso che va a spegnersi sulla terrazza del Cistella. Il rifugio è una bella costruzio-ne in muratura su 3 piani dotato di 24 posti letto. La zona offre ampie possibilità di passeggiate e escur-sione, mountain bike su sterrato e arrampicata su roccia.

Located at the entry point of the Solcio Alp, right at the beginning of the grassy gorge that ends on the Cistella natural terrace, this refuge is a be-autiful three-storey brick building, with 24 sleeping places. The area offers many trails for hikes and ex-cursions, off-road mountain bike rides, and rock climbing.

Tecnologia e caratteristicheIl Bettelmatt® è un formaggio ottenuto dal latte crudo intero di un’unica mun-gitura, prodotto esclusivamente tra la fi ne di giugno ed i primi di settembre. La stagionatura minima è di 60 giorni. Le forme sono cilindriche di circa 5 kg di peso, un’altezza 6/7 cm., e un diametro di 30/35 cm. La pasta è compatta e morbida, di colore giallo oro o paglierino con occhiatura media e la crosta è liscia.

Localizzazione e denominazioneIl Bettelmatt® si produce esclusivamente in sette alpeggi della Valle Antigorio-Formazza nei Comuni di Formazza, Baceno e Premia denominati: Morasco, Ka-stel, Val Toggia, Vannino, Poiala, Forno, Sangiatto, l’altitudine rispetto al livello del mare va da 1800 a 2400 mt. circa.Il Bettelmatt® originale porta sulla crosta la data di produzione, il bollo CEE del produttore ed è marchiato a fuoco. Bettelmatt® è un marchio registrato.

L’origineCon il nome “Bettelmatt” si identifi ca fi n dal XIII secolo, epoca della coloniz-zazione walser della fascia subalpina, un formaggio di eccellenza che veni-va utilizzato come merce di scambio, per il pagamento di canoni d’affi tto o concessioni d’alpeggio oppure tasse, ma non solo. Il nome Bettelmatt, infatti, pare derivi da “Battel” che signifi ca questua, quindi era senz’altro utilizzato per forme di benefi cenza e l’unione con il termine “Matt”, che in tedesco signifi ca pascolo, rende chiaro il signifi cato del nome in: “pascolo della questua”.

Technology and CharacteristicsBettelmatt® is a cheese obtained from raw whole milk from one single milking. It is produced exclusively between the end of June and the beginning of Sep-tember with the milk of cows grazing the mountain pasture. It is ripened for a minimum of 60 days. Forms are cylinder-shaped, 30/35 cms in diameter, and 6/7 centimeters high. Each form weighs approx. 5 kilos. The texture is soft and compact, of a golden-yellow or straw-yellow colour, with average size holes. The rind is smooth.

Origin and DenominationBettelmatt® is made exclusively by seven producers - Morasco, Kastel, Val Toggia, Vannino, Poiala, Forno, Sangiatto - located in the mountain villages of Formazza, Baceno and Premia in the Alpine Antigorio - Formazza Valley in Pied-mont. The producers' farms and pastures are at an altitude ranging between 1,800 and 2,400 meters a.s.l. HistoryThe word “Bettelmatt” has been used since the 13th century - the time of the Walser colonization of the Southern area of the Alps - to identify a very special cheese, often bartered for other goods or used for paying taxes and rents for homes or pastures. Moreover, it seems that the name 'Bettelmatt' derives from 'Battel' that means 'begging', to indicate that the cheese was used in some form of charity. The combination with the term 'Matt' that means 'pasture' fur-ther clarifi es the meaning of the name: 'the pasture of begging'.
