From the Primary Coordinator

Kids’ Dream DayKids’ Dream Day was a huge success and enjoyed by all. It was wonderful to see the children and teachers dressed up in what they dream of being when they grow up. We had some very interesting professions represented such as rock stars, company managers, scientists, reporters and many more.

The children enjoyed choosing a masterclass to participate in from such a wide range of exciting activities. It was wonderful to see them so enthusiastically participating and the teachers did a fantastic job facilitating these. We also wish to thank the parents who donated their time to run a masterclass for the children.

$547.00 was raised from donations, which was an amazing effort. We are looking forward to the release of the photos taken on Dream Day by the photographic company and with 25% of the sales going to this cause it will boost our school’s contribution to the foundation.

Thank you to everyone that helped make Kids’ Dream Day such a wonderful success and we look forward to celebrating again in 2015.

Peer Support Program Kindergarten to Year 6Leadership DayOn Tuesday 2 September, the Year 6 students will be prepared for their Peer Support Leadership role. This preparation program will be held at the Sunshine Avenue Campus. Students will need to be delivered to and collected from the Sunshine Avenue campus on this day.

Children in Year 6 are permitted to wear mufti on this day. They should bring their recess, lunch and drinks for the day. Lunch orders will not be available on the Leadership Day.

Peer Support ProgramThe Primary Peer Support Program will be run every Friday for six weeks commencing on Friday 5 September 2014. The sessions will be held from 11:45am to 12:30pm. The students in Year 5 and Year 6 will travel to the Sunshine Avenue Campus departing Mahers Lane at approximately 11:15am and returning approximately 1:00pm. Students in Year 5 and Year 6 will have morning tea prior to going to the Sunshine Avenue Campus and will have lunch on their return to Mahers Lane.

The Peer Support Program seeks to provide dynamic, peer led learning sessions which foster the mental, social and physical well-being of young people. Student learning sessions are facilitated by trained peer leaders – our Year 6 students – with multi-age groups from the younger years. All students from Kindergarten to Year 6 will participate in this program.

Outcomes of an effective Peer Support Program include:

• Building positive relationships• Enhancing mental health• Taking personal responsibility• Embracing lifelong learning• Encouraging participation.

The Peer Support Program supports the Key Learning Areas of English and PDHPE as well as complementary educational initiatives such as social and emotional learning, restorative practices, pastoral care, student welfare and positive behaviours.

Cyber Safety Parent Information SessionsOn Thursday 11 September we will be hosting an information session conducted by the Australian Community and Media Authority focused on cyber safety. Some of the topics that will be covered are:

• Technology risks and what’s trending• Protecting identity and reputation• Cyberbullying• Gaming• Cybersmart resources.

The session will be held at the Sunshine Avenue Campus from 6:00pm-7:30pm. If you would like to attend please RSVP to Sunshine Avenue Administration by Tuesday 9 September.

The Great Book SwapOn Wednesday 3 September, the Sunshine Avenue Campus will celebrate Indigenous Literacy Day with all students from Preschool to Year 4 participating in the Great Book Swap. This event will help raise money to provide vital funds for children in remote indigenous communities whilst promoting a love of literature at Lindisfarne. Last year we raised over $600 and we hope to match that again this year.

All students are asked to donate a pre-loved book to the book swap. These books are now being collected in classrooms and at the Sunshine Avenue campus office. On the Great Book Swap Day students will be invited to give a gold coin

donation in exchange for choosing a pre-loved book to take home.

We are looking forward continuing this wonderful celebration and thank you all in advance for being a part of it. I am also looking for volunteers to assist on the day. If you are available please email me at

Library NewsLindisfarne Loves2ReadNext week we celebrate Lindisfarne Love2Read week which will include visits from two authors. On Monday Tristan Bancks (http://www.tristanbancks.com/) will talk to a group of students from Year 2 to Year 6. Tristan has been writing children’s books for many years, including ‘Nitboy’, ‘My Life and Other Stuff That Went Wrong’ and the ‘Mac Slater Cool Hunter’ series. On Wednesday we have Martin Chatterton (http://worldofchatterton.com/) an author/illustrator who has written the ‘Mort’ series of books. Having authors visit our school is a great way to promote books and reading for pleasure and I would like to thank the P&F for funding our author visits

Reading HourThe Reading Hour (http://www.readinghour.org.au/) is a concept where parents reading to their children at home is encouraged. During Lindisfarne Love2Read week, we ask that you read to your children for 10 minutes a night for the week. From the web site: Sharing a book with your child for 10 minutes a day, an hour a week is our aim for The Reading Hour. We know it’s not always possible for parents to share a book at bedtime with their children, but if you can manage 10 minutes most nights, your child will have the best chance of becoming a good reader, with all the social and educational benefits that reading brings.

LiptemberLiptember is a campaign raising funds and awareness for women’s mental health during the month of September. It is all about having fun with lipstick, for a serious cause: Women’s Mental Health, specifically any form of anxiety, depression, post natal depression and dementia. Throughout the month of September many of the Primary staff have pledged to wear Liptember lipsticks to school every day. These lipsticks come in a variety of bright colours so you may see us wearing purple, pink, red, green, blue or even orange.

All funds raised during the month of September are donated to Lifeline and to the Centre for Women’s Mental Health. If

PreschoolPreschool JoeysEdie FitzGerald emailed us some photos of her new home in China. This sparked many discussions about our homes and different types of bedrooms. We investigated these ideas further by researching and collecting resources to help us develop the children’s sense of belonging to communities and to explore different aspects of their identity.

For show and tell the children each brought in a photo of their house and favourite place to visit in their local area.

Continuing on, we shifted the focus to the art area where the children painted and collaged their own houses, units, bridges and fences to design and construct a Joey’s small world. This has now become an interactive, imaginative play area and it has also provided a play space for the Joey’s to cooperate with others and negotiate roles, developing their sense of belonging to a group and community of learners.

Preschool GardensThank you to Kate Rogers for her incredible hard work,

stamina and perseverance in completing the makeover at our Preschool gardens in record time. I would also

like to thank a group of Preschool mums who helped with the gardens - Julie Stockwell, Robyn Warner,

Kylie Travaglia. Thanks also to the Lindisfarne grounds staff for their help and support.

It was such an enjoyable experience we have decided to revamp all the Preschool gardens and would love your help and company if you have the time, energy or inclination.

The next Preschool garden working bee will be on Wednesday 3 September. All help appreciated - even if it is only for half an hour.

Kindergarten

As part of our mathematics studies, Kindergarten has been investigating rolling, stacking and sliding 3D shapes. The children have had fun using everyday items that are 3D to practise grouping and sorting.

There children participated in many hands-on activities including the use of play dough and different reusable materials to make the shapes.

Our First Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden

Kitchen Experience

On Wednesday 20 August at school we went to the garden and harvested lots of lettuce with the weed cutters and I cut a big branch off.

We stayed there for about half an hour and then we were off. Before we went to the kitchen we washed our hands, then we went to the kitchen. Madeline, Sophie and Connor went to work in the kitchen while the rest of the class cut vegetables. In our salad we had: beetroot, lettuce, tomatoes, carrot, capsicum, cucumber, snow peas and mushrooms.

In the kitchen Connor, Madeline and Sophie were cooking a beautiful salad dressing for our salad. Finally it was time to eat it was so yum I had seconds, plus the bell rung but no one wanted to leave because it was that yum. That was our lunch for Wednesday.

Stage 3 NewsDance Ensemble

This coming Monday, the Stage 3 Dance Ensemble will perform at the Gold Coast Arts Centre as part of the Gold Coast Eisteddfod. The ensemble has been working very hard every Friday during Stage 3 sport time. The group consists of 48 dancers with a wide variety of dance experience. The piece we will present is styled in the roaring 20’s and the music is from the recent Great Gatsby movie titled “A Little Party Never Killed Nobody”. The ensemble is entered into the Primary school section with 20 other competitors. The students have worked hard to rehearse the choreography, align their positioning and enhance their performance quality. I am so proud of the ensemble’s commitment and passion for dance and cannot wait to see them perform.

Year 5 Science Week ExperimentsLast week was Science Week and to celebrate, Year 5 was lucky enough to go into one of the Science labs. There we met Mr Smith and Jack (Year 11 student). They had a fun food energy experiment prepared for us. Once we were in groups of 4 – 5 we had to measure water and heat foods. The foods included, cheetos, tiny teddies and rice crackers. We lit the food and then held it under glass tubes of water to see if the temperature of the water would increase rapidly or slowly. We recorded our data and learnt that if you put a hot object under water then the temperature will increase. I loved this opportunity and can’t wait to get back into the science labs.
