This is Baltimore – southeast Baltimore, to be specific.

It’s smack in the middle of the atlantic coast. It gets hot and it gets cold, but it doesn’t get too hot or too cold. Snow is common enough to fall a few times every year, but it’s enough of an anomaly to bring with it a measure of chaos.

Lights turn red and drivers don’t immediately stop. There’s no hurry to step on it when the lights turn green, either.

Some residents have lived here their whole lives; others never would have guessed that they would end up in Upper Fell’s Point or Canton or Highlandtown.

Neighborhoods in the Southeast remain mixed, even amid gentrification. a dual-income-no-kids couple in a newly-renovated $550,000 row home lives next door to an elderly woman who has been in the same two-story home since childhood. Canton’s famous orange Lotus is seen parked on the street with mid-range vehicles and old junkers.

There are diverse and numerous night-life options. Within walking distance are high-end bistros with post-industrial minimalist decor, where subtly-applied hair gel and locally-sourced ingredients might inspire friends to put some sweat equity into developing that new app. There are “shot-and-a-beer” joints, hanging on decades after fueling the Southeast’s working-class backbone with the breakfast of champions.

In southeast Baltimore, all kinds of services and conveniences--food delivery, transportation, trash pickup, etc.--are at residents’ fingertips. But there are inconveniences too. The streets are torn up as water lines are updated. They are repaved, and residents are thrilled to have their streets again. a couple months later, the “no parking” signs go up again for gas and electrical work.

Keeping it all relatively balanced is the community. When a person has a problem in southeast Baltimore, she can bet that she’s not the only one. There are others with the same concerns.Folks work together for solutions, or at the very least share their frustrations. your neighborhood community association is often the best resource for tackling city-life frustrations. It’s also an ideal source of information on all those benefits that make city-living so worthwhile--the block parties, festivals, neighborhood clean-ups, greening projects, performances, art installations and flea markets.

To help you figure out the small stuff, we have assembled this reference guide. May it serve you well as a starting point as you discover southeast Baltimore.

Baltimore’s public library system is the Enoch Pratt Free Library, one of the oldest in the nation, founded by industrialist Enoch Pratt in 1884. Pratt’s first branch opened in Canton in 1886; the branch, which sits in the middle of O’Donnell Street at Ellwood avenue, is the only one of Pratt’s four original branches still operating; it is currently receiving an historically accurate renovation.

Restaurantsat a community meeting a little over a year ago, a resident questioned

Maj. Bill Davis, then commander of the Southeast District, on the

numerous patrol cars seen parked outside of eating establishments

across the Southeast.

If all these police are inside the Southeast’s burger joints, pizzerias,

taco stands and seafood shacks, the questioner implied, then who the

heck is out watching the streets?

Nothing in the major’s demeanor or posture indicated that the

question made him the least bit uncomfortable. He replied immediately

and as if the answer were the most obvious thing in the world--no

hemming, hawing or rephrasing the question.

“Most of those officers aren’t from the Southeast,” he said. “They’re

coming from all over the city. They just come here for the food.

Everybody knows that the Southeast has the best food.”

The eyes of the meeting-goers, which had taken on skeptical

squints, relaxed. Lips parted and released “ah”s. Heads nodded in

acknowledgment. Knowing glances were exchanged.

Thoughts turned from robberies, smashed car windows and drug

sales to the fresh, chopped onions at Fell’s Point’s Tortilleria Sinaloa,

stacks of buttery pancakes at Jimmy’s Restaurant, perfect steamed

crabs at Scooter’s Seafood, Coney Island hot dogs at Highlandtown’s G

& a Restaurant, and Salt’s duck-fat fries.

The atmosphere lightened, the rest of the questions put to the major

that evening were of a different bent: “What can we do as citizens to

make things easier for the police?” or “I just want to say that I’ve seen the

cops on the (Insert hundred block and street name here), and they’ve

been doing a fantastic job.”

and ethnicities, all of which bring their own cuisines to share with

the neighbors. There is nothing like trying a flavor outside of your

perfection you would never have considered had you not ended up in

this day and age in southeast Baltimore.

Parks and RecreationParks

Patterson Park: Often referred to as “Baltimore’s best backyard,” the

residents of southeast Baltimore use it for just that. Jogging, dog-walking,

frisbee-playing, fishing, sledding, bird-watching and slack-lining are a few of

the activities that occur in the park on any given day. The audubon Society

offers programs for all ages, from Tiny Tot Safari, which teaches preschoolers

about the nature all around them, to a monthly bird-watching walk for all

ages. The Friends of Patterson Park serve as stewards and advocates for the

park. Patterson Park is the huge green expanse extending from Patterson

Park ave. to Ellwood ave., east to west, and from Baltimore St. to Eastern

Thames street Park: a great place to take the kids after school to burn

a little more energy, Thames Street Park, located in Fell’s Point at Wolfe and

Thames streets, offers green space and a playground suitable for young

children, with slides, platforms and monkey bars. a major renovation

is being planned that will upgrade the park and make the equipment

Halcott square: adults and kids alike enjoy this pocket-park filled with

lush greenery. Named for Charles Halcott, who spearheaded the effort to

preserve it, the park was once the site of seven row houses. Located on the

100 block of S. Duncan St., Halcott Square is a popular summer gathering

space for adults bearing white wine and kids with their tricycles. The

greenery keeps the little space a few degrees cooler than the surrounding

asphalt jungle.

Ellwood ave., directly behind Coppermine Field House at Clarence “Du”

Burns arena. Featuring playground equipment for the little ones, a plan to

install a “splash pad” for wet summer play was announced last year.

Canton Waterfront Park: Between Boston ave. and the water, from

Potomac St. to East ave., the Canton Waterfront Park allows residents to

relax, fish and recreate at the water’s edge. The park is also now the home

of WTMD’s First Thursdays summer concert series. With walking paths, one

of the best views of the harbor, benches and green space, the park has

something for everyone.

Virginia Baker Recreation Center: Located at 2601 E. Baltimore St.,

on the north side of Patterson Park, offers a variety of activities to kids and

“I think it’s nice,” said student Monica Lemus-Rodriguez of John Ruhrah Elementary and Middle School’s new playground. “We don’t have to grow up too fast. We’ve still got a little kid inside of us.”

The playground was actually built last Wednesday, July 10, by principals from across the country. The National Association of Elementary School Principals chose Baltimore as the location for its annual conference, and the association chose John Ruhrah

Mary Donnelly, principal of John Ruhrah, said that her school had applied to receive the new playground. The old playground, with missing pieces and safety issues, was dismantled in mid-May, she said.

“Parents were raising money to put in a new playground, but we weren’t anywhere near where we needed to be,” she said.

Red Line panel meets tough crowd in Canton

When public comment was curtailed and an agenda item on Boston St. construction was not reached, Canton residents left more than fuming from a Red Line Citizens’ Advisory Council meeting.

Residents near the stretch of Boston St. between Montford Ave. and Hudson St.--where the Red Line train would transition to the surface as it heads east—have long opposed that aspect of the project.

The last time Red Line plans were presented to the Canton community, at a January public forum, Maryland Transit Administration engineers gave two traffic re-routing options for the prolonged construction of the Boston St. tunnel transition. Both were soundly rejected by the residents and Boston St.-area businesses that attended that meeting.
