From the Pastor’s Desk Sixteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time
Theme: “Hospitality”
On this Sunday we are called to reflect on the importance of hospitality in all the things
we do. Hospitality is about people welcoming others into their homes or other places
where they work or spend their time. The word hospitality comes from the Latin root
“hospes,” which came from the word hosting, which originally meant “to have power.”
Hospitality is all about the art of entertaining or receiving guests. The call to be
hospitable is part of the call to discipleship. I give thanks to God that at OLGC we have a
ministry of hospitality which is being coordinated by Parish to School Connection (PSC).
I pray that this ministry should be extended to those who are visiting our community or
returning back to the Church after many years of absence.
This Sunday all the readings talk about hospitality. The book of Genesis presents the
inspiring story of Abraham and Sarah extending hospitality to three men (in reality, God
and two angels). The day was too hot. Abraham had been in conversation with the Lord.
Abraham and Sarah are at this point without a child. All these trials could easily have
made them self-absorbed and self-pitying. They could have overlooked their guest.
However, Abraham and Sarah are people of hospitality because they are close to the Lord.

Este domingo estamos llamados a reflexionar sobre la importancia de la hospitalidad en
todas las cosas que hacemos. La hospitalidad se trata de personas que reciben a otros en
sus hogares u otros lugares donde trabajan o pasan su tiempo. La palabra hospitalidad
proviene de la raíz latina “hospes,” que proviene de la palabra hosting, que originalmente
significaba “tener poder.” La hospitalidad tiene que ver con el arte de entretener o recibir
invitados. El llamado a ser hospitalario es parte del llamado al discipulado. Le doy gracias
a Dios porque en OLGC tenemos un ministerio de hospitalidad coordinado por Parish to
School Connection (PSC). Ruego que este ministerio se extienda a aquellos que visitan

dades de los demás. La fe rompe las cadenas de la auto-absorción
y la autocompasión.
La hospitalidad de Abraham y Sara es recibida por la generosidad
de Dios. Nos informa que dentro de un año serán bendecidos con
un hijo. La hospitalidad trae nueva vida. Nuevas posibilidades se
abren a nosotros. Nuevas partes de nuestra personalidad
comienzan a desarrollarse. La hospitalidad nos saca de nosotros
mismos y nos involucra en las necesidades de los demás.
Empezamos a vivir de una manera nueva. A través de la
demostración de hospitalidad, Dios da un nuevo nacimiento dentro
de nosotros y extiende nuestros corazones a nuevos niveles de
cuidado amoroso para los demás. Podemos arriesgarnos a mostrar
hospitalidad porque Dios no nos olvida.
Debemos tener cuidado porque, mostrar la hospitalidad puede
reducirse a mero sentimentalismo o trivialidad. La verdadera
hospitalidad es bastante exigente y desafiante. San Pablo escribi-
endo a los Colosenses indica que el ministerio implica sufrimiento
e identifica este sufrimiento con el de Jesús. La hospitalidad no es
hospitalidad cuando se hace solo cuando nos sentimos “en el
estado de ánimo.” La hospitalidad es un espíritu de corazón que
siempre está listo para responder a las necesidades de los demás.
No se enciende y apaga con un interruptor. La hospitalidad se
extiende a los invitados inesperados traídos a casa para la cena; a
la persona que aparece en nuestra puerta. Al viejo amigo que está
pasando y llama para decir, “¿Cómo estás?” Nuestros horarios se
interrumpen; nuestras vidas planeadas se vuelven no planeadas

Debemos cambiar de marcha y reorganizar nuestras prioridades.
Otros tienen necesidades y deben ser bienvenidos.
Finalmente, el evangelio de Lucas indica que ser hospitalario es
necesario pero no suficiente. Podemos hacer hospitalidad, pero
igual como Martha, estar ocupados con muchas cosas, sin estar
realmente presente a la persona como nuestro invitado. Podemos
encontrarnos con detalles pero perder de vista la meta: dar la
bienvenida al huésped como a un ser querido. Al hacerlo, nos
volvemos resentidos y amargados, porque otros no están haciendo
su parte del trabajo.
Mis queridos hermanos y hermanas, la hospitalidad es muy
necesaria en nuestros corazones, en el hogar y en el mundo de hoy.
Necesitamos ser más generosos y atender las necesidades de otras
personas. Nuestra Señora del Buen Consejo tiene la tradición de
ser hospitalaria y generosa con nuestros recién llegados y
visitantes. Necesitamos renovar esta tradición y sacar fuerza de
ella. Necesitamos ser una vez más una comunidad hospitalaria que
llegue a los necesitados y que brinde consuelo a los que tienen el
corazón roto. Necesitamos volvernos hacia afuera y abrazar a
nuestros hermanos y hermanas, tanto cercanos como lejanos. Al
hacerlo, la justicia vivirá en la presencia del Señor.

Abraham provides water for the customary foot-washing.
Shade and rest from the heat are extended. Sarah fixes them
something to eat and makes them feel at home. These
particular guests do not need this attention, but Abraham
and Sarah doesn’t know this. The special relationship of
Abraham and Sarah with the Lord frees them to be more
sensitive to the needs of others. Faith draws us out of
ourselves and allows us to meet the needs of others. Faith
breaks the chains of self-absorption and self- pity.
The hospitality of Abraham and Sarah is met by the
generosity of God. He informs us that within a year they
will be blessed with a son. Hospitality brings forth new
life. New possibilities open up to us. New parts of our
personality begin to develop. Hospitality draws us out of
ourselves and involves us in the needs of others. We begin
to live in a new way. Through the showing of hospitality,
God gives new birth within us and stretches our hearts to
new levels of loving care for others. We can risk showing
hospitality because God does not forget us.
We should be careful because, showing of hospitality can
be reduced to mere sentimentality or triviality. True
hospitality is quite demanding and challenging. St. Paul
writing to the Colossians indicates that ministry involves
suffering and identifies this suffering with that of Jesus.
Hospitality is not hospitality when done only when we feel
“in the mood.” Hospitality is a spirit of heart which is ever
ready to respond to the needs of others. It is not turned on
and off with a switch. Hospitality is extended to the
unexpected guest brought home for dinner; to the person
who shows up on our doorstep. To the long-ago friend who
is passing through and calls to just say, “How are you?” Our
schedules are disrupted; our planned lives becomes
unplanned. Others intrude into our hearts with their needs.
We must shift gears and rearrange our priorities. Others
have needs and must be welcomed.
Finally, the gospel of Luke indicates that being hospitable is
necessary but not sufficient. We can do hospitality, but still
like Martha, be busy about many things, without really
being present to the person as our guest. We can find
ourselves caught up with details but losing sight of the
goal— welcoming the guest as a loved one. In doing so, we
become resentful and bitter, because others are not doing
their share of the work.
My dear brothers and sisters, hospitality is greatly needed in
our hearts, home, and in the world today. We need to be
more generous and caring for the needs of other people.
Our Lady of Good Counsel has a tradition of being
hospitable and generous to our newcomers and visitors. We
need to renew this tradition and draw strength from it. We
need to once again be a hospitable community who reaches
out to those in need and give comfort to the broken-hearted.
We need to turn outward and embrace our brothers and
sisters both near and far. In so doing, justice will live in the
presence of the Lord.

Mission Appeal for the Propagation of the Faith Weekend of July 27 & 28, 2019
Each year the Archdiocesan Office of the Propagation of the Faith sponsors the Missionary Cooperative Appeal. This year our parish is pleased to welcome Brother David Cooney who will speak to us at all Masses next weekend, July 27 & 28. The second collection at each Mass next weekend will be sent to the Propagation of the Faith office to support the needs of mission Dioceses and Religious Communities. Religious Education Registration
For September 2019-2020
Our Lady of Good Counsel is now accepting registrations for the
2019/2020 program year beginning in September.
Registration forms can be picked up in the back of the church or
in the parish office. The complete registration form, a copy of the
Baptism certificate, a copy of the birth certificate along with the
registration fee are to be submitted at the time of registration.
Registrations are accepted during parish office hours. For more
information call the parish office at
718-447-1503.
Re-registration forms were sent home on 2/24/19.
First Day of Class is Sunday, September 15, 2019 for
Pre-K through the 6th grade. First Day of Class for RCIA Teens
and 7th Grade is Wednesday, September 18, 2019.

Nuestra Señora del Buen Consejo está aceptando inscripciones
para el programa 2019/2020 que comienza en Septiembre. Los
