Dear Parishioners and Visitors to Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish-Shrine,

Last week I was approached by someone who is a grandparent. The person's

situation is very common in this day and age. The situation is that she and her husband are

practicing Catholic Christians. They raised their children as Catholics and made sure that

these children received the sacraments and were practicing Catholics while growing up.

Now, the children are grown and none of them practice their Catholic Christian faith. They haven't

denied their faith in an explicit way but they simply don't practice the faith in any noticeable way. The oldest

child has been married for some years and has a child who is a year old. The child has yet to be baptized by

the parents who, as grown children of the woman who approached me, do not practice their Catholic faith.

Here's the situation: the grandmother, the woman who approached me, is extremely upset because

her grown children do not practice the faith and now their first child hasn't been baptized and the parents don't

seem to have any intention of doing so, at least not at this time. This situation is very common and I am

approached by many parishioners whose families have this same situation.

So what is the answer? First, there is no simple answer. I encouraged this woman to continue to

practice her faith, pray for her grown children and live the faith in such a way that her joy, peace, serenity and

unconditional love are always a part of her life. This example may be the strongest reason given to her

children as to why a person should actively follow Christ as a practicing Christian. It's easy to argue against

words and arguments. However, it's a completely different thing to argue against actions. Quite honestly, one

can't argue with a lived example. So, when others, even our own non-practicing family members, see our love,

peace, joy, serenity and all the other gifts of the Holy Spirit that come from receiving the sacraments and

actively living a life of a disciple, what more powerful defense of our faith could be given? None!

Second, I suggest to her that she realize that our Church believes and teaches that God's love which

sent His Son, Jesus, to suffer, die and resurrect for us, was done so for all people, even those who may not

believe it or are not members of the Church through the sacrament of Baptism. I know that this doesn't help

with her deep concern for her children's life choice, however, I hope that it helps her understand that her

grandchild is loved by God and this child's soul is not in danger of eternal separation from God in the case of

the child's death. Our Church has believed and taught since the very beginning that those, who through no

fault of their own, are not baptized into the Body of Christ, are not condemned. Paul, in Chapter two of his

letter to the Romans reminds us that community which those who are "innocently ignorant" of God's saving

love, have the possibility of receiving salvation. Certainly, no child who, through no fault of their own, isn't

baptized is exempt from God's mercy. This is the belief and teaching of our Catholic faith.

I think that one of the things that really bothered this woman was a coworker who is a Christian but not

of the Catholic Christian faith told her that, should something happen to her grandchild, this child would not

"go to heaven". Although there are other denominations who may believe and teach this, it is not what we

believe and teach, and certainly goes against the very teachings of Sacred Scripture. However, that's another

letter for another bulletin!

Finally, I told the woman to never lose hope that her children will once again begin to practice

their faith and that they will bring their own children to Christ through Baptism. It is amazing the

power that children themselves have once they begin to see and understand on their own that there

is something going on that they don't understand. Surely, as soon as they see such a thing it isn't

long before they start asking about it. And when they do, the time to act is ripe. And if all else fails,

there's always that situation where one day when little junior is over mom mom and pop pop's

house he might just find himself in the tub or near a sink and who knows what mom mom or pop pop

might say in such a situation?

God Bless you for being with us this weekend and have a wonderful week. Peace!

Fr. Joe

Stewardship Stewards Love Others

“I give you a new commandment: love one another.

As I have loved you, so you also should love one

another." JOHN 13:34

Jesus showed His love by healing the sick, giving

hope to the hopeless and ultimately dying on the

cross for us. We, too, are called to show our love for

one another by living our Stewardship.

Caring for others is the

measure of ourselves. We

are one human family and

we are called to be our

brother’s and sister’s

keepers.

It is through YOUR

participation in the House

of Charity Appeal that

our mission is full-filled.

The “incentive goal” for

this year’s campaign is

$122,000. We are half

way there! Our current

total is $71,276.41.We ask

that YOU prayerfully

consider a gift/pledge to the House of Charity.

Pledge cards are in the back of both churches.

YOU can provide the light of hope to the homeless,

unemployed, hungry, elderly, etc. of our brothers

and sisters in need around our Camden Diocese.

(Proverbs 27:17)

This is what we do: We open our sessions with a

personal prayer, we read the Scriptures, meditate about them,

watch an inspirational movie, discuss it and have a closing prayer

from another member of the group.

We meet the second Wednesday of every month. So our next

meeting is on May 8th at 7:30 p.m. in the consolation room of St.

A HOLY HOUR TO PRAY FOR VOCATIONS TO THE PRIESTHOOD AND RELIGIOUS LIFE” The Office of Vocations has

scheduled Holy Hours for Vocations called First Thurs-

days throughout our diocese. Every month, a different

deanery will host a Holy Hour to pray for an increase in

vocations to the priesthood and religious life. Our dean-

ery’s Holy Hour will be on Thurs., May 2nd at St. Teresa

Church, Holy Child Parish, Runnemede, beginning at

7:00 p.m. “Pray…pray…pray to the master of the

harvest to send out laborers for his harvest.” Please come

– your presence and your prayers are most important

to this cause as we all work together in the work of

vocations.
