The Assump!on Of The Blessed Virgin Mary The Church has always held to the belief that Mary was assumed, body and soul, into a heavenly state, even though the belief was not declared as dogma"c un"l 1950. The early Church had a robust tradi"on of revering relics from the saints of the day, and their complete lack of relics from the Mother of Jesus was seen as evidence of this Marian belief. The celebra"on of the event as a feast dates back to the fourth century in the East, and the seventh century in the West.

Mary’s Assump"on says something about humanity as well. Sin only has power over us if we allow it. Mary was freed from this power in her Immaculate Concep"on, and when she responded “Yes” to God. We were freed from that power when Jesus died and rose, conquering death. Now, we must respond “Yes” to claim the victory that was already won for us. On this feast, we should not only celebrate the great works God has done for us through Our Lady, but also celebrate the truth that we have the opportunity to one day spend eternity with her and her Son, Jesus. ©Liturgical Publica"ons Inc

A Note From The Pastor… We have a parishioner from St. Dismas who will be selling "ckets a%er Mass at the back of Church for their fundraising event on Saturday, September 1st, from 7 to 11PM at the Gold Pyramid House in Wadsworth. We have a need for more volunteers to serve as Ministers of Care (MOC). MOC visit and bring the Eucharist to Catholics in a variety of se&ngs such as hospitals, re"rement communi"es, and the homebound. Without MOC, the faithful who are unable to a#end Mass would be deprived of the infinite value of the Eucharist. Please refer to Page 9 of this bulle"n for informa"on regarding upcoming Training Sessions. The deadline to sign-up for these Training Sessions is Monday, September 17th, and the contact person for our Parish is Gloria Askew. Please consider praying about whether or not God is calling you to serve Him and the faithful in this way.

Speaking of Ministers of Care, there is an important mee"ng this Saturday, August 25th, at 9AM in the Hayes Community Room. It’s not too late to par"cipate in the Illinois Tax Credit Scholarship Program. Please see Page 6 of this bulle"n for more informa"on. I would like to remind you of the Free access to quality Catholic videos, audio, and print programing provided by our Parish on Formed.org: Exploring the Catholic Faith, Bible Studies, Sacramental Prepara"on, Parish-Based Programs, Youth and Discipleship Programs, and a number of programs in Spanish. There are many DVD movies, audio CDs, and a number of books to read via kindle and other devices. Again, all of these features are Free. Currently there are about 75 parishioners registered and using this service. Before you had to remember our password, but not anymore! Simply go to: h"p://www.ourladyo#umility.formed.org and register. This Friday, August 24th, we will begin having our Morning Mass at 8:45AM as School is back in session beginning this Monday, August 20th. Please pray for our new Principal Maggie Dolan as well as all the faculty and students, that we might have a grace-filled year in serving the Lord and growing as disciples of Jesus. Please also refer to this bulle"n regarding a change in our Teen Ministry here at OLH. There are some changes this year with our Teens having the opportunity to a#end Life Teen at St. Paul’s in Gurnee along with Teens from other parishes in the area. With summer ending and so many changes and transi"ons, let us be sure to pray for one another.

God Bless,

Fr. Paul

OLH Teen Ministry Christ First will have a whole new format this year. We are combining with the other two parishes in our cluster for a program called Life Teen.

What Is Life Teen? Life Teen is a movement within the Roman Catholic Church which leads teenagers and their families into a deeper rela"onship with Jesus Christ and His Church. The theme for 2018-19 is “Relentless Father”. This informa"on is taken directly from the Life Teen Website which you can visit at: lifeteen.com. The other two Parishes in our cluster are St. Patrick in Wadsworth. and St. Paul the Apostle in Gurnee. Also Teens from St. Anastasia in Waukegan will be a#ending. So this will be a great chance to connect with lots of other Catholic Teens in northeast Lake County.

When And Where? It will be held Sunday evenings, and will take place at St. Paul in Gurnee. First day for Life Night is Sunday, September 16, 2018. More informa"on to follow. Each High School Student who is a registered parishioner will get a mailing. RCIA – Rite Of Chris!an Ini!a!on For Adults

Life has many storms – distressful rela"onships, jobs, poor health; situa"ons where we feel powerlessness. If you know someone unbap"zed, or bap"zed in a non-Catholic Chris"an tradi"on, who is searching for strength and understanding to weather such squalls, invite them to seek the perspec"ve the Catholic Church offers through the RCIA process. The RCIA process is a journey of faith:

¨ Through the ini"al stages of asking and seeking,

¨ Through beginning involvement with faithful Catholics,

¨ Through hearing the Gospel proclaimed, and by faithful reflec"on and prayer on this Word of God, ¨ Through study and discussions about

Catholic teaching and way of life, ¨ Through doubts and hesita"ons, ¨ Through a growing desire to serve and

love others, ¨ Through discernment of God’s call to

each human life, ¨ Through the steps of commitment, ¨ Through the Sacraments of Ini"a"on

(Bap"sm, Confirma"on, and Eucharist).

You do not have to journey alone! It is not too late to join us Mondays at 7PM in the Hayes Community Room. Call the Rectory at: (847) 872-8778 for more informa"on.

Humanae Vitae Presenta!on Come and join us for an Informa"ve Talk by Fr. Brian Mullady, O.P. on the Encyclical Humanae Vitae on September 22, 2018 at St. Mary of the Lake Seminary Cafeteria. Registra"on is at 7:30AM. Breakfast is at 8AM. Talk starts at 9AM. Cost is $15 Per Person. Call (847) 223-7022, or E-mail [email protected] to register. Come learn why it is absolutely necessary for Catholics to follow the teaching in Humanae Vitae if they want to restore God to His righXul place in the family and society. Our speaker has stated, “Pope Paul VI predicted that if contracep!on was accepted, it would lead to widespread divorce, the destruc!on of the family, compromising of the ins!tu!on of marriage, abor!on on demand, and devaluing of human life. People laughed at him. But these predic!ons have come true.” Come and hear the real explana"on of why the Church is opposed to contracep"on, and if followed how this can drama"cally change the world morally and psychologically for the greater good!

Le"er From Fr. Mike Dear Friends in Christ, This past year has been a very interes"ng period of my life, to say the least! When I requested to serve as a dual Associate at St. Patrick and Our Lady of Humility, I had no idea what to expect. Obviously, I knew there was to be a lot of juggling between the parishes, running back and forth to various obliga"ons, but I did not an"cipate the level of difficulty entailed in this assignment. Our Lord Jesus Christ warned us of this in the Gospel, “no one can serve two masters” (Ma#hew 6:24). A%er this past year, I have a much greater apprecia"on for these words! Now, this le#er is not intended to be a plea of ‘let’s feel sorry for Father Mike.’ It is more of a personal realiza"on that I cannot be in two places at the same "me. I did the best that I could with my limited resources of "me and energy, and I hope that I had a posi"ve influence on your spiritual journey. But I just could never get comfortable with the dual parish assignment; all too o%en, I felt like a supply priest coming in to help out on the weekend. For my own spiritual well-being, I need to be giving 100% at one assignment. At the same "me, however, my prayer life over this past year has helped me recognize an ongoing spiritual itch that I have been trying to ignore, one for which I have finally worked up the courage to scratch. Through the help of trusted friends, colleagues, and spiritual directors, I have discerned an authen"c voca"on to the religious life; namely, to the Order of St. Benedict. Recently, I discovered the Monks at St. Leo Abbey in central Florida. Over the course of several weeks of retreat, I have found myself drawn into their life of prayer and work, their humility and poverty… I truly feel like I am home when I am there! And so I write to you today with a sense of peace and serenity, as well as with a joy-filled excitement for my future endeavors, sensi"ve as well to your feelings of sadness at my departure. The Abbot of St. Leo has given me permission to start the applica"on process for admission, and Cardinal Cupich has expressed a willingness to let me explore this voca"on. As of this wri"ng, I do not have a start date, but I am hoping that it is sooner rather than later. In the interim, as I wait for my acceptance into the community, I will be working exclusively at Our Lady of Humility. This will give me the opportunity, however brief it might be, to give my complete a#en"on to one parish. Of course, I am s"ll available to help out at the St. Patrick whenever Father Merold needs me. I would like to take a moment to thank both Fathers Merold and Stemn for allowing me the opportunity to minister at these parishes as a priest. I thank the staffs for their support and pa"ence in dealing with the unusual situa"on of a split associate. Thanks also to all of you that have encouraged me in my ministry; it has been an honor to be your priest. Although its been a very challenging year, I wouldn’t trade it for anything! I ask you to please keep me in your prayers as I con"nue to navigate the intricacies of this new voca"on. Please pray also for an increase of voca"ons to the priesthood, so that the next genera"on of priests will not have to be split between two or more parishes! Know that you are in my prayers as well. I will keep you informed of my "meline as I find out more informa"on.

Peace,

Fr. Mike
