Dear Friends, My last couple of letters have been long ones. This will be short. My last couple of letters have tried to explain, in very simple terms, the state of our finances here at OLL. We can’t do much unless our financial house is in or-der. Today I want to talk about the good I see going on around here at OLL and

believe me, there is a lot of good. I see people opening doors and helping people to their pews who are handicapped. I see the Spanish Community having two fundraisers and giving the proceeds to the

parish. I met up with two visiting priests from England last Sunday who were amazed we

had so many people at a Sunday Mass, but were even more impressed by the welcoming spirit they felt.

We, as a parish, have had five funerals these past two weeks. Even though most of these families are non-practicing Catholics, the families expressed to me how grateful they were for giving their loved ones a church service.

Last Sunday we honored all our teachers at the 9 and 12 Noon Masses. How gifted we are to have so many teachers willing to give their time and talents in passing on the Faith to a new generation of Catholics.

We are not a perfect parish, but we are a good parish filled with good people. De-spite our imperfections, it is good people like you who will get us through the tough times. Thank you, from the bottom of my heart, for your goodness. I am truly blessed to be your pastor.

Mis últimas dos cartas han sido las largas. Esta será breve. En las anteriores he tratado de ex-plicar, en términos muy simples, el estado de nuestras finanzas aquí en OLL. No podremos hacer mucho a menos que nuestras finanzas esten en orden. Hoy quiero hablar de lo bueno que veo que pasa aquí en OLL y créanme, son muchas las cosas buenas. Veo a la gente recibiendo y llevando a sus bancas a las personas con alguna incapacidad. He visto a la Comunidad Hispana organizar dos eventos y donar lo que recabaron a la Parroquia. Conoci a dos sacerdotes de Inglaterra que nos visitaron y quedaron muy sorprendidos por la cantidad de gente que asiste a misa los domingos. Y mas impresionados aun quedaron por la actitud de bienvenida con que los recibieron. Tuvimos cinco funerals en las ultimas semanas y aunque la mayoria de las familias no son catolicos practicantes, expresaron su gratitud por haber podido tener esos servicios para sus seres queridos. El domingo pasado hicimos un reconocimiento a los catequistas en las misas de 9 y 12. somos afortunados de contar con tanto maestro dispuesto a invertir su tiempo y sus aptitudes para trasmitir la Fe a la nueva generacion de católicos. No somos una parroquia perfecta, pero somos una buena parroquia, llena de gente buena. A pesar de defectos, son gente buena como usted que nos sacara adelante en momentos dificiles. Gracias desde el fondo de mi corazón, por tu bondad. Es una verdadera bendicion ser su Pas-tor. Feliz Otono! Padre Brian

Great News! Liturgy of the Word for Children resumes this Sunday 9/28 at the 9am Mass for children in grades 1-4. During the Liturgy of the Word, our catechists lead the children to the Meditation

Chapel where we share the readings from the Chil-dren’s Lectionary. Children have the opportunity to say the Children’s Creed together and share their own Prayers of the Faithful (special intentions). The children are then returned to their parents for the Lit-urgy of the Eucharist. Please join us as we celebrate the Mass in a way that makes it easier for some of our youngest parishioners to understand. Christ wants us all to come to Him in the Mass. Let’s help our children get there.

La leyenda cuenta que La Santísima Virgen se apareció a Santo Domingo y le dijo que el rezo del rosario transformaría el mundo. TRADICIONES DE NUESTRA FE Las actas de los mártires son documentos de suma importancia en la Iglesia cristiana. En ellas se encuentra el testimo-nio de hombres y mujeres que con su sangre dieron testimonio del evangelio. En esta documentación encontramos el testi-monio de quienes vieron y presenciaron su martirio. Por ejemplo, un soldado dice de los mártires: “Dormían en el suelo. No les vi quejarse en ningún momento y estuvieron todo el tiempo rezando y muy recogidos. . . magníficos, unos santos. . .”. Testimonios como éste eran comunes en los primeros siglos del cristianismo cuando en la Roma pagana se perse-guía a la Iglesia primitiva. Lamentablemente, este testimonio no viene de hace 17 ó 19 siglos, más bien, viene del siglo pasado, siglo en el cual la persecución de cristianos se multiplicó por todas partes del mundo produciendo más mártires que ningún otro siglo. El testimonio del soldado fue acerca del primer santo Argentino, Héctor Valdivieso Sáez y compañeros, quienes fueron asesinados por los comunistas en Asturias, España. Él fue uno de los más de 8000 cristianos martirizados en Es-paña, 30,000 en China, incontables en Latinoamérica y otros lugares durante el siglo pasado.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Over time, the severe form of one-chance pen-ance collapsed under lack of enthusiasm for its bur-dens and its public nature. As ordinary Christians prayed for the great sinners, it must have occurred to them that they were sinners no less, and they re-quired a form of penance also. The Irish came to the rescue, never having had a public form of penance, but inventing a system called “tariff penance,” which was completely private, available to everyone, and wildly popular. After a detailed confession, priest and penitent would lie on the floor before the altar and recite a number of psalms. The priest then pro-nounced a judgment, a tariff, giving a task or a pray-er to complete before reconciliation. The surviving guidebooks for confessors make for hair-raising reading as the sins of which the Irish people were supposedly capable were catalogued and keyed to penances. Cattle or sheep rustling might require stripping down to sing psalms in an icy brook, for example, or adultery could be the oc-casion for rolling in a thicket of thorns. All of this might have stayed in Ireland had not the monks had a desire to travel, blazing across Europe with their theology and their rituals, and their sense that Chris-tians needed strong medicine for sin and the assur-ance of God’s forgiveness.
