Reconociendo que las decisiones acertadas están informadas por la sabiduría del pueblo de Dios, establecí el Consejo Parroquial Pastoral de la iglesia de Nuestra Señora del Perpetuo Socorro, el 20 de enero de 2019. Los documentos del Concilio Vaticano II recomiendan la creación de tales consejos. Afirman que los católicos tienen el derecho y el deber de expresar su opinión sobre lo que pertenece al bien de la Iglesia.

Los pastores deben consultar a su pueblo, dicen los documentos, y guiarse por la prudencia de su consejo. Desde la creación del Consejo Parroquial he tratado de reconocer la sabiduría de sus miembros y he sido bendecido al compartir con ellos - con muchos otros participantes de los diversos ministerios parroquiales - mi responsabilidad en el gobierno de la parroquia.

En este, primer año de existencia, el Consejo Parroquial ha realizado un trabajo impresionante, por lo que estoy muy agradecido. Invito a todos los feligreses de OLPH a orar y agradecer la dedicación de todos ellos: Dae Simeon (Presidenta), Jane Messina (Secretaria), Christine Borgia, Gloria Cardona, Clarisse Castro, Malinda Lugo; y especialmente Alfredo Figueroa, Pamela Plazak, Chi Roque y Stan Kutz, cuyos servicios al Consejo Parroquial terminan ahora en diciembre de 2020.

Quiero agradecer a los que me han enviado nominaciones para reemplazar a los que se van ahora; de entre ellos voy a elegir a cuatro. Su compromiso será por tres años, con la ayuda de Dios y de nuestra Señora del Perpetuo Socorro.

From Father Hector’s Desk Recognizing that sound decisions are informed by the wisdom of the people of God, I established the Pastoral Parish Council of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church on January the 20th 2019. The documents of the Second Vatican Council recommended the establishment of such councils. They state that Catholics have a right and duty to express their opinion on what pertains to the good of the Church. Pastors should willingly consult their people, say the documents, and use

their prudent advice. Since the establishment of the Parish Council I have tried to acknowledge the wisdom of its members and I have been blessed by sharing with them and the other participants of various ministries, my responsibility for the governance of the parish. In this, the first year of existence, the Parish Council has done an awesome work, for which I am so grateful. I invite all the parishioners of OLPH to pray and thank the dedication of all of them: Dae Simeon (President), Jane Messina (Secretary), Christine Borgia, Gloria Cardona, Clarisse Castro, Malinda Lugo; and more especially Alfredo Figueroa, Pamela Plazak, Chi Roque and Stan Kutz who’s services to the Parish Council end now in December 2020. I want to thank those who have sent me nominations to replace those leaving now, I will choose four. Their commitment will be for three years, with God’s and the Virgin Mary’s help.

LA INMACULADA CONCEPCIÓN DE LA VIRGEN MARÍA

Esta solemnidad celebra el dogma de la Inmaculada Concepción de la Virgen María tal como lo declaró Pío IX

en su constitución apostólica Ineffabilis Deus (1854): "La Santísima Virgen María, en el primer instante de su concep-

ción, por una gracia singular y privilegio concedido por Dios todopoderoso, en vista de los méritos de Jesucristo, el Sal-

vador de la raza humana, fue preservada libre de todo pecado original".

La fiesta fue solemnizada por primera vez, como día de obligación, el 6 de diciembre de 1708, por la Bula Papal

Commissi Nobis Divinitus de Clemente XI. Ahora esta fiesta se celebra universalmente el 8 de diciembre, nueve meses

antes de la fiesta de la Natividad de María (el 8 de septiembre). La Inmaculada Concepción es una de las fiestas maria-

nas más importantes del calendario litúrgico de la Iglesia Católica Romana y se celebra en todo el mundo.

Por decreto pontificio es la fiesta patronal de diez países, además de los Estados Unidos de América. Además

de ser una celebración de la Iglesia Católica Romana, esta fiesta también es celebrada por algunas otras iglesias

THE IMMACULATE CONCEPTION OF THE VIRGIN MARY

DECEMBER 8

This Solemnity celebrates the dogma of the Immacu-

late Conception of the Virgin Mary as declared by Pius IX in his

Apostolic constitution Ineffabilis Deus (1854): “The most

Blessed Virgin Mary, in the first instant of her conception, by a

singular grace ad privilege granted by almighty God, in view of

the merits of Jesus Christ, the savior of the human race, was

preserved free from all stain of original sin”.

The feast was first solemnized as a Holy Day of Obliga-

tion on December 6th, 1708, under the Papal Bull Commissi

Nobis Divinitus by Pope Clement XI. Now this feast is universal-

ly celebrated on December 8, nine months before the feast of

the Nativity of Mary, which is celebrated on September 8. The

Immaculate Conception is one of the most important Marian

feasts in the liturgical calendar of the Roman Catholic Church

and is celebrated worldwide.

By Pontifical designation and decree, it is the patronal

feast day of ten countries worldwide, besides the United States

of America. And besides the Roman Catholic Church, this feast

is also celebrated by a few other closely related Protestant

churches. With a different theological approach, Eastern Ortho-

dox Churches celebrate December 9th as the Feast of the

Conception by St. Anne of the Most Holy Theotokos (the Moth-

er of God).

This feast is often celebrated with Mass, parades, fire-

works, processions, ethnic foods, and cultural festivities and is

generally considered a family day, especially in many majority-

Catholic countries.

NUESTRA SEÑORA DE GUADALUPE

12 DE DICIEMBRE

En la mañana del 9 de diciembre de 1531, un indígena converso, llamado Juan Diego, estaba cruzando lo que

ahora se conoce como el "Cerrito del Tepeyac" - un lugar árido, donde sólo había cactus - en su camino a Tenochtitlan

(lo que ahora es la Ciudad de México). De repente oyó una música hermosa que venía de la punta del cerro. Oyó a al-

guien que le llamaba por su nombre. Juan Diego tuvo una sensación extraña porque muchos años antes, había habido

ahí, un santuario para la diosa azteca, Toanantzin. Era la deidad favorita de esa región, y cuando su santuario fue

destruido por los españoles, junto con todos los demás templos e ídolos paganos, los nativos sintieron una gran pérdida.

Sin embargo, no fue Tonantzin quien llamó a Juan Diego, sino que fue la Santísima Virgen María (ahora cono-

cida por la advocación de Guadalupe), quien apareció por detrás de las rocas. Le pidió a Juan Diego que fuera y le dije-

ra al obispo que quería una iglesia construida en esa colina. El obispo no creyó a Juan Diego y le dijo que trajera alguna

evidencia de la Virgen María para probar que estaba diciendo la verdad.

El tío de Juan Diego enfermó por lo que Juan Diego decidió ir a la ciudad. Pero, tratando de no encontrarse con

la Virgen para no entretenerse, optó por cambiar de ruta. De todos modos, la Virgen decidió aparecerse a Juan Diego

en la otra ruta, ordenándole subir al cerro, y en el lugar habitual de sus apariciones, recoger algunas rosas, envolverlas

en su “tilma” (capa) y llevarlas al obispo.

Frente al obispo, Juan Diego, abrió la tilma y dejó caer las rosas. En la tilma apareció la imagen de la Virgen de

Guadalupe de cuerpo entero. Esto convenció al obispo de que Juan Diego estaba diciendo la verdad, y se construyó

una capilla en el cerro del Tepeyac, según sus deseos.

On the morning of December 9, 1531, a young Indian

convert, named Juan Diego, was crossing what is now known

as the “Tepeyac Hill” - a place where only cactus grew - on his

way to Tenochtitlan (what is now Mexico City). He suddenly

heard beautiful music coming from the hill. He heard someone

calling his name. Juan Diego got a strange feeling because

many years before, there had been a shrine to the Aztec God-

dess, Toanantzin. She was the favorite deity in that region, and

when her shrine was destroyed by the Spaniards, together

with all other pagan temples and idols, the natives felt a great

loss.

It was not Tonantzin who called Juan Diego, however;

it was the Blessed Virgin Mary (now known by the advocation

of Guadalupe), who appeared from behind some rocks. She

asked Juan Diego to go and tell the bishop that she wanted a

church built on that hill. The bishop did not believe Juan Diego

and told him to bring back an omen or some evidence from

the Virgin Mary to prove he was telling the truth.

Juan Diego’s uncle became ill and Juan Diego decid-

ed not to go back to the Virgin and ask for the omen; instead,

he thought about going to the city taking a different rout. The

Virgin appeared to Juan Diego nevertheless and ordered him

to go up the hill, to the usual place and pick some roses, wrap

them with his cape and bring them to the bishop.

Upon Juan Diego’s return, he opened his cape and

dropped the roses. There, appeared depicted, the image of

the Virgin of Guadalupe. This convinced the bishop that Juan

Diego was telling the truth, and a chapel was built on the Tep-

eyac Hill, according to her wishes.

LEGION DE MARIA PARA NIÑOS, JUVENILES Y ADULTOS La Legión de María para adultos mayores de 18 años le invita a sus reun-iones semanales todos los sábados en el Salón Parroquial Padre Stokes, a las 10:00AM. La Legión de María Juvenil invita a todos los niños mayores de 8 años y juveniles menores de 18 años a participar en sus reuniones semanales, todos los lunes 6:00pm en el Salón Parroquial Padre Stokes.

Article written by Stan Kutz Did you know the first nuns at our parish school were from the Sisters of St Joseph of St. Augustine, FL? They branched out to serve Blacks as well as LatinX in Ybor City. Beginning in 1885, Cuban cigar makers work-ing in Key West moved into the Tampa Bay area. By October, 1888, in addition to the estimated three hun-dred Roman Catholics in Tampa there were probably three thousand Catholics in Ybor City, settlers who fol-lowed the early cigar makers to Florida’s west coast. Private Catholic school classes conducted by our nuns began on our grounds at the corner of Seventeenth Street and Eleventh Avenue on September 23, 1891. This particular group of nuns originally came to Florida from France in 1866 to serve the needs of the liberated Blacks following the Civil War. This mission was modified both by the politics of the period and by the perceived needs of white Catholic children wishing to attend Catholic schools. In addition to teaching chil-dren of both races, the Sisters of St. Joseph carried out charitable work. They provided medicine for the poor, visited the infirm, cared for orphans, and helped to ad-vance the salvation of souls whenever they saw the opportunity. These women made simple vows of per-sonal poverty, chastity, and obedience. The nuns wore street-length black dresses with long sleeves, white collars, and black veils. From 1866, the headquarters in St. Augustine trained recruits from Florida, from states to the north, from Canada and the British Isles. ¿Sabías que las primeras monjas de nuestra escuela parroquial furon las Hermanas de San José de San Agustín, FL? Una de las ramas de esa Congregación se dedicó a servir a los niños de raza negra y latina en Ybor City. A partir de 1885, los fabricantes de cigarros cubanos que trabajaban en Key West se mudaron al área de la Bahía Tampa. En octubre de 1888, había trescientos católicos romanos en Tampa y tres mil ca-tólicos en Ybor City, colonos que siguieron a los pri-meros fabricantes de puros a la costa oeste de Flori-da. Las clases privadas de la escuela católica realiza-das por nuestras monjas comenzaron en nuestros te-rrenos en la esquina de la calle 17 y la avenida 11 el 23 de septiembre de 1891.
