My Brothers and Sisters in Christ, Msgr. T. Mark Condon

T R L C R H , A !

   A L , ,

. Following our days of Lenten reflec on and celebra on of the Paschal Mystery during the Sacred Triduum, we rejoice in this day of Christ’s victory. We celebrate this great day of joy and hope: “Christ, our paschal lamb, has been sacrificed; let us then feast with joy in the Lord” (1 Corinthians 5:7b-8a). The Lord Jesus has triumphed over sin and death and has changed our present and our future. Happy Easter!

W C ’ . Our first reading from Acts of the Apostles for the Mass of Easter Sunday reminds

us that we are witnesses to the hope of the resurrec on: “He commissioned us to preach to the people and tes fy that he is the one appointed by God as judge of the living and the dead. To him all the prophets bear witness, that everyone who believes in him will receive forgiveness of sins through his name” (Acts 10:42-43). Because of the Lord’s passion, death, and resurrec on, we are able to face each day without fear or anxiety; his love gives us the promise of eternal life, the assurance that we will live forever. This is the day that makes our faith credible. This is the central event in human history and the one that assures us that our life has permanent and eternal meaning. We return with special focus to the Christ’s victory over sin and death and the promise that we are drawn into his own divine life. In his homily for the Easter Vigil in 2014, our Holy Father, Pope Francis, noted:

To return to Galilee means  to re-read everything on the basis of the cross and its victory, fearlessly: ‘do not be afraid’ To re-read everything – Jesus’ preaching, his miracles, the new community, the excitement and the defec ons, even the betrayal – to re-read everything star ng from the end, which is a new beginning, from this supreme act of love.

As we celebrate Christ’s resurrec on from the dead we know new hope and joy. Even when life seems to have more than its share of disappointment and sorrow, the promise of Easter is that we belong to God and that he will never abandon us to powers that could ever take us from his embrace. This is the great feast of hope. It is the defini ve moment that makes the Chris an faith eternally new. E E P , E ,

L , along with the three most solemn days of the liturgical year, the Paschal Triduum, in which we are now standing; they raise our hearts to sing with thankfulness and praise to Almighty God for so great a Redeemer, Jesus Christ: “The sanc fying

power of this night dispels wickedness, washes faults away, restores innocence to the fallen, and joy to mourners, drives out hatred, fosters concord, and brings down the mighty.” We have just celebrated the most joyous events of our faith and have commemorated, made present again through the power of the Holy Spirit, the sacred work of our redemp on. There is always reason for hope because Jesus Christ makes all things new. W , , ,

R L . When we are anxious about the future it is very difficult to focus and to think clearly. The promise of Easter morning is that there is no fear or anxiety that will overcome us. We may get distracted along the way, make wrong turns, and experience the sorrows that come from hurt and human disappointment but we really have no fear about what our future will be. We already know. We are the people who have been redeemed by the Blood of Christ; he has given us a future that is bright and certain. T R L

or that we can get by without making the kind of sacrifices that the Lord made for us; that is a kind of a false peace. The peace that we know in fact is found in making sacrifices for others, extending the mercy that God has shared with us to others, and in being liberated from sin that leads to despair and darkness. It takes me and experience to understand the power of the resurrec on in our lives. The Gospel reading for this Easter morning we read that, “Mary of Magdala came to the tomb early in the morning while it was s ll dark, and saw the stone removed from the tomb” (John 20:1). Even though Christ had already risen from the dead, Mary did not yet understand that she was s ll walking in the darkness of doubt and despair. Even a er she had seen the stone removed from the tomb, Mary s ll did not comprehend what had taken place; she ran to Simon Peter and the disciple whom Jesus loved and exclaimed: “‘They have taken the Lord from the tomb, and we don’t know where they put him’” (20:2). When Simon Peter and John ran to the tomb they also at first remained in the dark, even with what Jesus had told them about his passion and death. As we walk with the Risen Lord we are drawn more deeply into the purposes that God has for our lives and we also grow in understanding of what it means to share his divine life. O C ’

. The road to Calvary was rough and long for the Lord; our own lives can be too. But no ma er what sorrows we bear or sadness we feel, we can be confident that Christ, our hope, is arisen and that the power of the Holy Spirit which will come upon us anew when we celebrate Pentecost in fi y days can change us and give us cause to rejoice in so great a Redeemer who dispels all darkness. A Happy Easter to all of the members of our parish family. Thank you for all that you do to support our parish and to make our community a vibrant one that celebrates our faith in the Risen Lord and which reaches out to others who wish to know the faith, hope, and love that he brings to us.

Faith Formation Corner

Attention 2nd Grade Parents: As weekly mass is an integral part of our lives as Catholics, it is important that our children attend weekly mass. This is especially important as they prepare for the Sacrament of First Eucharist and equally important after they receive their Sacrament. While our parish offers many masses during each weekend for us to attend, during the next several weeks, we require that all children who will soon receive the Sacrament of First Eucharist, attend the Sunday 9:30 AM mass together as a group. Attending mass together shall begin on Sunday, February 25, 2018 and continue through each of the remaining weekends of preparation.

These dates that your children will be attending 9:30 AM mass together are as follows:

4/8, 4/15, 4/22, 4/29

We require at least one parent or guardian to accompany and stay with the child during Mass. When you arrive, please sign the attendance form that will be located at the front and rear entrances of the church. After Mass please bring your child to their respective classroom for their weekly instruction.

Thank you for your cooperation and support. We Are STILL in NEED of Catechists! Our ability to provide effective programming for so many of our children enrolled in our program is only made possible if we have enough volunteers to serve as catechists. Please carefully review the information in the registration letter with regard to our need for Catechists and return the Catechist Volunteer Form that was enclosed in the registration packet to the ministry center ASAP. If you would like more detailed information about becoming a catechist, please contact Trish at [email protected] or leave a message at the Parish Ministry Center 973-256-5200.

Confirmation Program OUTREACH OPPORTUNITIES Please see the following list for possible ministry opportunities that all students can become involved with:

All pans should be clearly marked with the meal that it contains and they should be brought back to the next month’s confirmation session FROZEN.

Altar Servers This is an important ministry for our parish and your support and involvement once per month is needed! We are in need of servers at all weekend masses. Please contact the Parish Ministry Center (973-256-5200) if you are interested in becoming an altar server.

Cursillo is an experience that can give you a renewed understanding of our faith. Its goal is to make faith alive for those who participate in this course. If you are looking for such an experience, there are dates available for both women and men.

Men’s 193rd Cursillo Thursday evening, May 3-Sunday, May 6, 2018

Women’s 177th Cursillo Thursday evening, May 31-Sunday, June 3, 2018

Volunteers Needed St. Vincent’s Nursing Home & Rehab Center is set quietly away on E. Lindsley Road in Cedar Grove. The setting is a fitting atmosphere to care for wonderful human beings who are in need of assistance in their daily lives. The excellent rehabilitation program offers therapy to restore quality of life to those who have suffered a stroke or physical injury.

In addition to the employees of St. Vincent’s, the lives of the residents are touched by the kindness of volunteers. These generous and caring people transport residents back and forth to Mass and to a myriad of activities. In some cases, a volunteer may be someone’s sole visitor. Volunteers allow a resident to communicate and laugh with others, be present for special musical activities, play bingo or create a handmade poncho or an individual flower garden. In order to make these wonderful opportunities available to residents, volunteers are necessary to transport an individual and chat along the way.

If you are interested, please call Sr. June at 973-754-4831. You will never dream of how important you can be to others.
