SPECIAL COLLECTION

The patron saint of priests,
Saint John Vianney, once
wrote “the priesthood is the
love of the heart of Jesus.”
A priest’s love also extends
to the Catholic faithful as
they lead parishes, teach
and preach the Gospel and
offer the Sacraments.

As faithful Catholics we have an opportunity to return to
them, in love, a sense of security in their re#rement years by
making a gi' to the Priest Care Fund. The Priest Care Fund
special collec#on provides funds for medical and longterm
care over and above what is covered by our priests’ insurance
and other resources.

In 2018, more than $214,000 was collected to offset medical
expenses for clergy in the Diocese of Fort Worth. Please
respond in love for their years of generous service by dona#ng
to the Priest Care Fund. There are several ways to contribute
to this special collec#on. In addi#on to the Sunday collec#on
during weekend Masses on Aug. 34, dona#ons can also be
made online at h5ps://bit.ly/PriestCare or text PRIESTS to
91999. Thank you for caring for those who care for us.

Next week, we will take up a collec#on for the Priest Care
Fund. Your support of this collec#on pays for our priests’
medical and longterm care expenses that are not covered by
insurance. “Care for Those Who Care for Us” by generously

SEVENTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
940-696-1253
Everyone is invited to pray
the LITURGY OF THE HOURS
led by Deacon Jim Bindel
(Shorter Christian Prayer Book provided)
TUESDAY MORNINGs AT 8AM
IN THE Holy family chapel

In the Roman Catholic Church priests are required by cannon law
to pray the entire Liturgy of the Hours each day while deacons are
required to pray the morning and evening hours. The practice
among religious communities varies according to their rules and
constitutions. The Second Vatican Council also exhorted the
Christian laity to take up the practice, and as a result, many lay
people have begun reciting portions of the Liturgy of the Hours.
5 Reasons the Laity should Pray the Liturgy of the Hours:
1. The Church Encourages it! In the Second Vatican Council document
Sacrosanctum Concilium, the Church declared, "the laity...are
encouraged to recite the divine office either with priests, or among
themselves, or even individually" (IV.100). The Catechism states, "the
Liturgy of the Hours 'is truly the voice of the Bride herself addressed
to her Bridegroom. It is the very prayer which Christ Himself
together with His Body addresses the Father" (CCC1174)
2. It Provides a Foundation for Your Prayer. One of the common
stumbling blocks to cultivating a prayer life is the absence of a
routine. The Liturgy of the Hours is perfect, because it provides you
with a prayer schedule for the day. Morning and Evening prayer offer
you a consistent means of sanctifying your day, by praising God in the
morning and thanking Him in the evening.
3. It Immerses Your Prayer in Scripture. St. Jerome once said,
"Ignorance of the Scriptures, is ignorance of Christ." In the
Scriptures we encounter Jesus Christ who is the Word made flesh.
The whole of the Christian life is oriented towards an encounter with
Jesus and union with Him. The Liturgy of the Hours is saturated in
Scripture.
4. It Follows the Liturgical Year. There are many celebrations
throughout the Liturgical Year and the Liturgy of the Hours immerses
you in all them. Each of the seasons of the Church focuses
intentionally on specific moments in the life of Christ and salvation
history.
5. It's Great for Travel. Liturgy of the Hours will hold your prayer life
together. When traveling there is the risk of your prayer routine to
get thrown out the window and replaced by spontaneity and chaos.
Prayer becomes an after thought. The Liturgy of the Hours will keep
your prayer life together during joyfully uprooting times and will
provide tranquility even in a busy setting.

940-696-1253
JULY 28, 2019
Are you guilty of spiritual stockpiling?
Spiritual stockpiling isn't an endless
rotation of rosaries and novenas. It's
accumulating emotional "goods" to meet
your needs. Perhaps it's a collection of
material objects you treasure. Maybe it's
a preoccupation with money. It could
also be relationships, making sure
there's always enough friends and connections to never really
feel alone. It's our tendency to let things add up so that we won't
quite need God to fulfill our inner life. Yet in this Sunday's Gospel,
we have that inescapable petition from the Our Father. "Give us
each day our daily bread."
This life isn't an immediate arrival. And as much as we might try
to shore up possessions and pleasures, we know the journey is
unpredictable. Give us this day our daily bread implies enough for
the next set of steps, but not enough to stockpile. So here's the
big question: Do we trust God to give us what we need? After all,
"What father among you would hand his son a snake when he
asks for a fish?... how much more will the Father in heaven give
the Holy Spirit to those who ask him?" At the Last Supper, Jesus
said he would never leave us orphaned. God will not abandon us.
And surely He wouldn't ask us to pray for what He does not
intend to give.
Of course, sometimes our prayers for daily help can seem to go
unanswered. Today's Gospel has advice for that, too. "I tell you...
he will give up to him whatever he needs because of his
persistence." Our spiritual stockpiling increases our self-reliance
and decreases our openness to God's possibilities. Be persistent
in your pursuit of God! Trust that He will keep His promises to
provide for us, today and always.
We do not need to use a lot of words in order to pray
well. Keeping things simple often works best, and it ap-
pears to be the form of prayer most preferred by Jesus.
The simplicity of the Lord's Prayer, the Our Father, gets
quickly to the heart of all of our important relationships
in life and sets us straight. Praying simply provides prop-
er focus and helps us develop greater trust in God's
providential care. We never know how each day will un-
fold and cannot control a good measure of what hap-
pens to us. What we can control is the disposition we
bring to life and how much we trust and hope in God's
desire to make all things new and right. Pray simply and
listen deeply. Our Father is calling.
TEACH US TO GIVE
AND NOT TO COUNT THE COST.
(St. Ignatius of Loyola—Feast Day is July 31)
