My dear family of St. Andrew the Apostle!

Over the last few months, I have shared with you important aspects of interacting with married couples who are experiencing “hard” or “soft” problems in their marriage, and the L.E.A.P. (Listen, Empathize, Affirm, give some Perspective) way of responding to a troubled member of a struggling couple who opens up to you to speak and share his or her marital problems with you. Remember, research suggests that couples with problems wait an average of six years before getting professional help. In the meantime, they talk to their friends, to family members, to coworkers, and to people they trust at church, like YOU. How these people (YOU!) respond can have a profound effect on the future of the marriage. God as Christ the King wants to rule our hearts and lives with real and true peace.

Today, I offer for your reflection the SECOND part of a two-part series going deeper into the male-female relationship. These are insights I have picked up from a family counselor, spiritual director, and healer-priest by the name of Fr. Robert T. Sears, SJ.

In the vast complexities of male-female relationships, Fr. Sears has discovered two secure principles which we reflected on more deeply last week (see bulletin of 11/19/17): (1) male and female are different not just biologically but in every aspect of their being, and (2) they can discover their differences (and unity) only through ongoing interrelationship. From these two basic principles together with the communal understanding of the Trinity, Fr. Sears draws forth five ways of further understanding the interrelationship between God and our male-female make-up as human beings. First, humanity as “male and female” interpersonally (not simply biologically) in the “image of God” implies complementary equality in every aspect of human existence. Human male and female are not interpreted from below (the sexuality of the animals) but from above (as revelation of God’s being). The fact that it is not good for the man to be alone and that God made a partner “like him” gives further support for a relational understanding of male-female as involved in God’s image. Second, the one-sided subordination of the sexes (man dominating woman, woman clinging to man, Gen 3, 16) is the result of the Fall, not God’s original intention, and hence is to be overcome in Christ’s “new creation.” Scripture does not imply a hierarchy of the sexes as God's image. In the first place, notice that subordination does not occur either in Gen 1 or in Gen 2. The point of Genesis 2 is woman's likeness to man (as distinct from the animals) and their original open relationship (naked without shame). Only in Genesis 3 subordination enters due to the loss of their loving and trusting relationship to God through disobedience. Not trusting God, they blame others (woman and the snake) and distort their own open relationship to one another. The dominating/clinging relationship is the natural result of this distrust and yields alienation and jealousy in children down through the generations. The text is not presenting an ideal but interpreting a de facto state that the author finds in his own day. Third, in His ministry Jesus treated women freely and equally in a way that was unprecedented in his culture. Two simple examples (of many): the book of Deuteronomy allows a man to take for himself a beautiful captive of war (Dt 21,10), whereas Jesus says whoever looks on a woman with lust has committed adultery with her (Mt 5,28). Jesus also freely entered the house of two unmarried women, Mary and Martha, quite contrary to custom, and He taught Mary despite the fact that all serious instruction in the Law at the time was denied women. Fourth, Jesus’ new way of relating to women did not die with him, but affected the church’s early ministry which included women. For example, St. Paul calls two other women at Philippi, Euodia and Syntyche, “fellow workers…in the spreading of the gospel” (Phil 4,2). All Jesus’ disciples, including women, are “sent” even as Jesus is – in the Gospel of John, St. Martha (not St. Peter as in other places) testifies that Jesus is “the Christ, the Son of God” (Jn 11,27), the Samaritan woman brings others to Jesus “through her word” (Jn 4,42), and St. Mary Magdalene is the first (scriptural) witness of the Resurrection and is sent by Jesus to tell the disciples, who presumably are to listen to her (Jn 20,17). Fifth, the de facto subordination of women found in the early church was conditioned by the culture of the time and the historical results of sin (tradition with a small t), and must be changed given our new historical circumstances. If God’s self-revelation as Trinity (Tradition as permanent) is to be maintained, traditions must be purified of limits and sin. Male-female relationships in order to grow need to be freed from latent vestiges of domination, inequality and disrespect if they are to reveal the freedom and equality of God’s self-giving love. It is not sexual differences but the gifts of the Spirit that structure Christian community. As the Son is equal partner with the Father in sending the Spirit, so women are called to become equal partners with men in God’s work of extending love to the unloved. God transcends sexual differences yet grounds both male and female qualities and calls both men and women to unity in differences and co-creation. Respect for God at work in every person, male and female, leads us to transform one-sided subordination to mutual listening. Unity, as a goal, is not one-sided, but pluralistic and other-empowering, respecting differences and reaching out to others. Joy comes from this mutual self-giving, and respectful love comes as a fruit, the joy that ultimately originates from our self-giving God!

Today as we celebrate Christ the King, we hear Jesus say “…..whatever you did for one of the least brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.

What would you do???? A single mom with three school age children had to suddenly leave an abusive relationship. Court costs and an aging auto left her struggling to pay her rent after moving to our town. There was no furniture, only mattresses to sleep on. Our team members had to sit on one chair and the windowsill to interview this family. Their dire need and faith in God touched us deeply. Our team located some furniture and dishes for them and gave them the needed papers to procure small household items from the local St. Vincent de Paul store. The joy on their faces on receiving this assistance was priceless. Please do what you can to help others. We need paying shoppers to visit our retail St. Vincent de Paul stores (nearest one at 1820 W. Jefferson St., Joliet, (815) 729-4585). Your shopping helps us pay overhead (trucks, employee salaries, rent and maintenance). You’d be surprised at what bargains you find there!

The We Care Food Pantry is looking for a gentleman who is free on Monday and Wednesday mornings and has a truck or a van which can be used to pick up bread and sometimes meats from the Aldi store on south Weber Road near Walmart. Our current gentleman, Mr. Mike Corbett, who has been doing this for so many years, will be leaving us at the end of the year. The Feast of St. Andrew the Apostle - November 30

Andrew, like his brother Simon Peter, was a fisherman. He became a disciple of the great St. John the Baptist, but when John pointed to Jesus and said, "Behold the Lamb of God!" Andrew understood that Jesus was greater. At once he left John to follow the Divine Master. Jesus knew that Andrew was walking behind him, and turning back, he asked, "what do you seek?" When Andrew answered that he would like to know where Jesus lived, Our Lord replied, "Come and see." Andrew had been only a little time with Jesus when he realized that this was truly the Messiah. From then on, he chose to follow Jesus. Andrew was thus the first disciple of Christ. Next, Andrew brought his brother Simon (St. Peter) to Jesus and Jesus received him, too, as His disciple. At first the two brothers continued to carry on their fishing trade and family affairs, but later, the Lord called them to stay with Him all the time. He promised to make them fishers of men, and this time, they left their nets for good. It is believed that after Our Lord ascended into Heaven, St. Andrew went to Greece to preach the gospel. He is said to have been put to death on a cross, to which he was tied, not nailed. He lived two days in that state of suffering, still preaching to the people who gathered around their beloved Apostle. Two countries have chosen St. Andrew as their patron - Russia and Scotland.

We have to ask ourselves, how can we prayerfully anticipate Christ’s second coming and celebrate the anniversary of our Savior’s birth all

the while making sure that everyone in my life gets a present that shows them how much they mean to me?

Reconciliation I’ve always thought that Advent was only about preparing our hearts for Christmas. While that is a major part of it, Advent is also a time to prepare our hearts for the second coming of Christ. As Catholics, we believe that Jesus Christ will come again, and we are called to be watchful and ready for when that happens. Ask Questions Every once in a while I f ind myself in a spiritual rut. I go through the motions in my life and my ministry. When that begins to happen, I ask myself why I am doing what I am doing. Why do I go to Mass? The answer, I realize, is simple: following Christ is the only thing that matters. He is my rock. So how do we get teens to come to that conclusion? Prompt them by asking important questions. Why are you here? Why did God create you? What is the point of l ife? It’s a great way to reset our way of thinking to focus on what truly matters.

Serve Others Christmas in our society has turned into such a selfish holiday. From a very young age, I remember asking my parents every single day for a different Christmas present. Rather than doing what I did, use Advent as a time to ask what your community needs and gather teens together to make an impact on that need. Serving others helps turn our selfish hearts into selfless ones, and it can trans-form the way that our teens pray throughout the Advent season. All Parishioners of St. Andrew the Apostle will have an opportunity to have their homes enthroned with the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary. The Legion of Mary will host this enthronement at no cost to you, it’s absolutely free! All you have to do is come to the back of the Church a er Mass on the weekend of December 2nd/3rd. The State of Illinois recently passed the Invest in Kids Act to help provide families

funding to attend the private school of their choice. The Tax Credit Scholarship

Program begins in January 2018 and will automatically expire January 2023 unless it is

extended by the legislature.

To participate in the program the parent/custodian and student:

must select a qualified school and apply for admission

comply with the qualified school’s published policies; and

apply for a scholarship through the Scholarship Granting Organization

authorize the Scholarship Granting Organization to

access information needed for income eligibility determinations.

*The Scholarship Granting Organization is in the process of being created. As soon as we have information on how the application process will work, we will let interested families know.

*To be sure that you are notified when the application process is determined, you are encouraged to contact your local Catholic School and let them know to add you to their list of potential applicants.

CATECHUMENATE The Catechumenate is a community which gathers those adults who have not been baptized, and seek deeper insight into the Christian faith.

BAPTISM OF CHILDREN

We joyfully celebrate the baptism of children of Christian households which are joined to our weekly worship, and have active registration in our parish community for at least 3 months. After registration in the parish, please attend an Evening of Awareness, if you have not attended a class in the past two years, to register for Baptism and select a date. Classes are presented on the first Wednesday of each month at 7:30 p.m. in the Parish Hall. Baptism is celebrated on the third Sunday of the month at 1:30 p.m.

EUCHARIST AND CONFIRMATION

Formation for those coming first to the table of the Lord as children is infused into the efforts of our school and Faith Formation Office. Confirmation formation is a two year process completed in eighth grade. Please call the Faith Formation Office for more information.

SACRAMENTS OF COMMITMENT

MARRIAGE

Marriage preparation is a six month process of prayer, reflection and study. Couples work with both the presider and a sponsor couple through this process. Please note that this six month period of preparation is essential.

SACRAMENTS OF HEALING

RECONCILIATION Reconciliation is available each Saturday afternoon, 3:00pm, Wednesday evening, 5:45-6:45pm, through seasonal communal services, and by appointment.

The St. Andrew We Care Food Pantry is open every Wednesday from 10:00 am. until 12:30 p.m. for any eligible family in Romeoville in need of food assistance.

The requirements to receive food commodities from the Pantry is that a valid State of Illinois Driver's License or State of Illinois ID and a current utility bill with your Romeoville address must be presented at the time of sign-in. Due to the poor economy, loss of employment or housing, and if you are currently residing with a Romeoville family, you may bring your valid Illinois Driver’s License or State ID AND a current utility bill from the Romeoville residents you are living with. Some proof of residency must be established. This must be brought to the Pantry each time you come for food assistance.
