CHRIST, KING OF ALL

On this, the final Sunday of the liturgical year, we

celebrate the solemnity of Christ the King. By concluding

the year with this feast we are proclaiming our faith that

Jesus Christ is the one and only king over all seasons, all

peoples, and all of creation.

At the end of time as we know it, Christ’s work of

restoring all things to unity and harmony with their

Creator God will be completed. This Sunday, when we

claim Christ as both our Shepherd and our King, we

recognize our own calling to participate in Christ’s saving

work by caring for those whom Jesus calls “the least

ones” (Matthew 25:45).

TODAY’S READINGS First Reading — I will rescue my scattered sheep (Ezekiel

34:11-12, 15-17).

Psalm — The Lord is my shepherd; there is nothing I shall

want (Psalm 23).

Second Reading — As in Adam all die, so too in Christ all

shall be brought to life (1 Corinthians 15:20-26, 28).

Gospel — Whatever you did to the least ones, you did to

me (Matthew 25:31-46). The English translation of the Psalm Responses from Lectionary for Mass © 1969, 1981, 1997, International Commssion on English in the Liturgy Corporation. All rights reserved.

The Pastor’s Corner I went for a long drive two Wednesdays ago, at night. You've probably been on longer drives, of 6, 10 or 12 hours. I was driving for just 2 hours, but in the pouring rain, in the darkness, it felt like a long time. You've had that experience, where the wipers are swiping through the streaking drops, and the headlights reaching through the rain into the black. I was going to a place I'd never been before, so I had the the small glowing light of my GPS directing me to turn left here, bank right there. Here in the California valley the land is completely flat, so flat you can flood fields for rice seedlings, but we're surrounded by the foothills that lead into the mountains. My route led me into those foothills, so I went from the ruler straight valley roads to the winding rolling country highways where the autumn oaks stretched their bare branches over the road like skeleton hands. I arrived at my destination at a tiny community center in a tiny town, a public building like you've been in before which is just walls and a roof, and this one with its Maximum Capacity 90 sign inside. When I arrived the space was already crowded and continued to fill so we were far exceeding the sign's instruction. I found there four other priests, and about that many Protestant pastors, amidst the families, adults and children: some holding the tiny candles that today are powered by batteries. We were gathered there for the familiar purpose of Catholics in the month of November, to pray for the dead. We were also there to remember those who were hurt, who were wounded in the violence of the day before. One of the pastors had a wireless microphone, which we passed around to the different members of the gathering, so they could share their story. What stood out the most was gratitude. Parents described their gratitude for the teachers whose quick response had saved the lives of their children. Teachers shared their thankfulness for the children who had been so brave, and that they had lived. We had a lot of tears, and still some fear and anger. When I was handed the microphone, I reflected on the moment when Jesus encounters his friends Martha and Mary, and they lead him to where their brother is dead. That's the one place, I pondered, where we find Jesus weeping in the Gospels. I described how close Jesus is to us when we weep for the departed, and reflecting on how the disciples saw how close Jesus was to his Father, I invited the gathering to pray the prayer that Jesus taught them. For us who believe, we don't know what fear, what violence, we will have to face in our lives. But we do know the one who has conquered death, whose light shines through every darkness. A lot of things in life can offer us happiness, comfort, or soothing. But we have to ask each of them how they handle death. And if they don't have an answer like our God can give, that's our cue to leave them behind and embrace the one whose death gives us life. I'll always remember the dark road I drove and the candlelit gathering I found at the end. And I hope when I arrive at my last day, I'll embrace the one who has the answer for every death. And I hope I'll find you there.

nuestro Rey, reconocemos nuestro llamado a participar

Y espero tambien

encontrarte allí.

Church Beautification – Help Needed

We are planning to replate the six candlesticks on the upper Altar by the tabernacle. This would restore them to their original beauty and shine. We have obtained a price from the same company that replated the sacred vessels we use on the Altar. The cost is $200 per candle stick. These candlesticks are believed to be part of the original furnishings of the Church. They have become tarnished over the years and simple cleaning methods will not restore them to their original condition. Please consider making a donation marked Candlesticks and we will be able to get the job done quickly. Now over $600 have already been donated for this work. Thank you in advance.

Catechesis of the Good Shepherd

In the Atrium As the season of Advent approaches, the children in the

atrium have been looking at the geography of Israel. We have been finding where Jesus lived on a globe, tracing Mary and Joseph’s travel from Nazareth to Bethlehem on a topographical map, and exploring the different regions of the area: Galilee, Judea, and Samaria. All of this helps to cement in the children’s minds the reality of the Incarnation. Please pray for us as we

continue to ponder this beautiful mystery.

R.C.I.A. (Rite of Christian Initiation) Adapted for Children and Teens is the process by which unbaptized young people at the age of reason (7 years of age or older) prepare to enter the Catholic Church through the sacraments of initiation- Baptism, Confirmation, and the Eucharist (Holy Communion). Children who are already baptized in this age group, but who are not catechized, can also prepare to celebrate the sacraments of Confirmation and Eucharist. You can see the names of these children who are in our parish Adapted RCIA program. Check out the Bulletin Board in the back of the church. Please pray for these children that God will strengthen their parents resolve as they assist their children on this journey. If you would like to be a prayer partner for this group of children, please contact Jennifer Hackney at 673-1573. The children would be ecstatic and empowered to know that their parish community holds them up in prayer. There are 81 children in this program. Thank you!

Catequesis Del Buen Pastor

R.C.I.A. Adaptado para niños y adolescentes
