OUR SUPPORTERS Supporting the Foundation is a generous act that creates a lasting legacy for all Queenslanders.

A MESSAGE FROM THE ACTING CEO “This year has been one of the most exciting and successful years in Queensland Museum Network’s long history, with record levels of activity. Years of planning and endeavour have culminated in record visitation, new and exciting exhibitions, a second stellar World Science Festival Brisbane, a dynamic public engagement program and continued contributions to Queensland’s economy. Our staff and associates, partners, donors and supporters are all vital to our successes, and I thank them for their passion and dedication.” Dr Jim Thompson Acting Chief Executive Officer Queensland Museum Network

Queensland Museum FoundationFor the past 155 years, Queensland Museum Network has relied upon the generosity of the community to continue valuable research, public outreach and engagement activities. A great deal of resources and energy are required to operate Queensland Museum Network. As we are only partially funded by the State Government, we look to the wider community to generate the support required to bridge funding gaps and continue to tell Queensland’s important stories.

In 2003 the Queensland Museum Foundation Trust (the Foundation) was established to coordinate fundraising and development activities for Queensland Museum Network. Since then, the Foundation has raised more than $26 million from donations, corporate partnerships, bequests and philanthropic grants.

All administrative and operating costs for the Foundation are met by the Board of Queensland Museum, which means that every dollar received by the Foundation directly benefits the work of Queensland Museum Network.

Our job is too important to do alone. The Foundation exists to raise funds to support the strategic priorities and state-wide programs of Queensland Museum. Though partnerships with government, industry and academia, we have been able to continue our important work of sharing stories with Queenslanders, undertaking critical research and inspiring visitors of all ages to enjoy the wonder of our natural and cultural history.

During 2016–17, the Foundation continued to build and consolidate its partnership portfolio, securing over $4.42 million in cash and in-kind partnerships. The philanthropic community generously provided over $180,000 in support of our activities, most notably the ongoing fundraising efforts for the Queensland Museum Repatriation Fund. In addition, Queensland Museum Network secured over $3.4 million in cash and in-kind support for the World Science Festival Brisbane, enabling us to continue improving our offerings and connect with more people than ever before.

Read on to learn more about the diverse activities that were achieved through collaborative, rewarding and enduring partnerships with supporters.

PARTNERS IN DISCOVERYThis innovative partnership between the Queensland Museum and BHP Billiton highlights the diversity and fragile balance of Queensland’s unique flora and fauna. Together we have continued to discover more about Queensland’s biodiversity and strived to encourage today’s students – the leaders of tomorrow – to excel in and explore the field of biological science.

Since the inception of this unique partnership, we have achieved remarkable outcomes through several exciting projects. Our suite of biodiversity themed loans kits, developed for distribution across Queensland, have been well received amongst teachers as addressing a need for engaging hands-on educational tools that are explicitly linked with the Australian curriculum. In addition, Queensland Museum Natural Leaders, presented by BHP Billiton, has for the past two years encouraged high school students to engage with their local biodiversity by creating a short documentary film. Competition entries have consistently been of impressively high quality, and winners have participated in a range of bespoke activities with Queensland Museum Network and BHP staff.

Queensland Museum’s spectacular Wild State gallery, opened to the public in October 2016, continues to be incredibly popular with audiences of all ages and has become a priority destination for international visitors. This immersive exhibition showcases the world-class research of Queensland Museum and takes visitors on a journey through Queensland’s five breathtaking habitats from the arid outback to the coast, including bushland, rainforests and the ocean.

ENGAGEMENT IN STEMQGC and Queensland Museum Network have continued to deliver Future Makers – a program aimed at improving participation and performance of Queensland students and communities in science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM). The curriculum-focused program has connected regional and metropolitan schools with industry expertise and museum objects and delivered major community-based events to enhance engagement and understanding in STEM.

Future Makers delivered STEM-focused teacher professional development workshops in schools and Queensland Museum Network campuses and, through the partnership, QGC also supported the delivery of the World Science Festival Brisbane 2017 regional program in Chinchilla and Gladstone, and were the Presenting Partner for the exhibition Hadron Collider: step inside the world’s greatest experiment.

Research and evaluation continues to underpin Future Makers activity, providing essential data and helping to inform future education policy. This has led to the successful award of an Australian Research Council (ARC) Linkage Project funding grant of $278,000 to Future Makers’ education research partner, University of Queensland.

The University of Queensland will lead the ARC project which will measure the impact Future Makers teacher professional development has on student performance in STEM. Other partners in the research project include the Department of Education and Training and the Australian Catholic University. Through their partnership, QGC and Queensland Museum Network continue to work towards their goal of leaving a legacy of Queenslanders inspired by STEM.

ACHIEVING SCIENTIFIC OUTCOMES BHP Billiton BMC continues its long-term relationship with Queensland Museum Network through the Fossil Q Partnership that aims to tell the story of megafauna in Queensland. Our collaboration has helped discover and preserve amazing regional treasures and gives us the opportunity to share these fantastic stories.

In the 2016-17 year, this included an annual field expedition to South Walker Creek, during which Queensland Museum Network and BMC staff worked together to continue megafauna excavations, research, and delivery of a community engagement itinerary. The trip resulted in the discovery of specimens of an extinct giant kangaroo, Pallimnarchus, and giant crocodile, Protemnodon. Events in 2016 and 2017 included palaeontological talks, demonstrations, and hands-on activities presented by Queensland Museum staff to share the significant fossil discoveries made at South Walker Creek with local school students, BMC staff and community members.

Lost Creatures: Stories from Ancient Queensland – an exhibition that reveals the secrets of Queensland from millions of years ago – continues to be a highlight for local, interstate and international visitors to Queensland Museum. This fascinating exhibition has been enriched by the launch of the Lost Creature Finder app, which has been downloaded over 2,500 times, and combines an interactive learning platform with cutting edge research to showcase Queensland’s fascinating fossil and palaeontological history.

A LASTING IMPRESSION The longstanding partnership between the Queensland Museum and Energex Limited demonstrates the outstanding potential that can be realised when two organisations with deep Queensland roots work together to achieve shared goals that support an educated and engaged community across the state. Between Energex Playasaurus Place, the Megawatt exhibition at the Sciencentre and The Workshops Rail Museum, National Science Week 2011, and the Energy for Life Discovery Centre at Cobb+Co Museum, we have reached over 8 million people with our shared commitment to discovery, education and sustainability.

Energy Queensland now plays a central role in the next stage of evolution of Queensland Museum, as together we strive to create awareness and understanding through compelling experiences that are underpinned by real objects and specimens. Central to our current partnership are two major projects, scheduled to be delivered at Queensland Museum in the coming years. The Anzac Legacy Gallery, due to open to the public in November 2018 to coincide with the 100th anniversary of Armistice Day, will use objects from the Queensland Museum collection to examine the First World War and its legacies in Queensland. The gallery will also provide a permanent home for Mephisto, the only surviving example of a First World War German tank. In addition, a new children’s play space will be developed, providing an iconic destination for our young visitors to discover, learn and be inspired.

EXCLUSIVE EXHIBITIONS AND EVENTS Queensland Museum Network continues to build strong partnerships with tourism bodies to contribute to the state tourism target through delivering exclusive international museum products. During 2016-17, Queensland Museum collaborated with Tourism and Events Queensland to secure the Australasian exclusive, Gladiators: Heroes of the Colosseum and to deliver the second annual World Science Festival Brisbane.

Developed in partnership with Expona and Contemporanea Progetti, Gladiators: Heroes of the Colosseum illustrates the fascinating world of gladiators with original artefacts from the Colosseum, cutting-edge interactive technology and theatrical storytelling. The exhibition is the first international travelling exhibition developed in collaboration with the Colosseum in Rome, with significant original loans coming from Italian museums and institutions and the support of the Soprintendenza Speciale per i Beni Archeologici di Roma, Italy.

Hadron Collider: Step inside the world’s greatest experiment was on show at Queensland Museum from 9 December 2016 to 25 April 2017. The immersive exhibition developed by the Science Museum, London celebrated the Large Hadron Collider by transporting visitors to the laboratories of the European Organisation for Nuclear Research (CERN). The exhibition, supported by QGC, helped Queensland Museum engage a new audience of science enthusiasts. Exclusive international exhibitions attract thousands of interstate and international visitors to the cultural precinct and continue to build on Queensland Museum Network’s success in contributing to Queensland’s growing events calendar.

QUEENSLAND MUSEUM REPATRIATION FUNDThe Queensland Museum Repatriation Fund was created in 2016 to enable Queensland Museum to continue the important work of repatriation, and, importantly, provide funding for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities to complete the repatriation process.

Since the official launch, meaningful steps have been taken with the support of the Queensland Museum Repatriation Fund that includes generous donations from the broader community and ongoing funding from the Commonwealth Indigenous Repatriation Program. Some of this work has included a now completed storage upgrade, funded by the Department of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Partnerships, of the Secret and Sacred room at Queensland Museum, which holds Ancestral Remains, Burial Goods and Secret and/or Sacred Objects. Ongoing consultations continue with the People and Traditional Owners of multiple Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities. Another important step has been the implementation of an additional Repatriation Manager position within Queensland Museum Network, allowing us to have both male and female managers for the Repatriation Program.

The generous support of government, private industry and the broader community is integral in helping us to continue the complex and ongoing work of repatriating Ancestral Remains, Burial Goods and Secret and/or Sacred Objects in partnership with and at the request of community. The Queensland Museum Repatriation Fund is a way for all Queenslanders to participate in the journey towards Reconciliation. With this support, we will continue assisting community to take their Ancestors home to Country, so that in accordance with custom and lore, their spirits may continue their journeys.

WORLD SCIENCE FESTIVAL BRISBANE The second annual World Science Festival Brisbane was an overwhelming success. Held from 22 to 26 March 2017, the festival enlivened Brisbane’s Cultural Precinct with an inspiring program of 128 performances of 95 individual events. Featuring 399 participants and activity providers, World Science Festival Brisbane showcased some of the most brilliant thinkers from across the globe, including World Science Festival co-founder Brian Greene; philosopher and author AC Grayling; former LIGO Director Barry Barish; UNESCO’s András Szöllösi-Nagy; Director of the National Science Foundation France A. Córdova; Nobel Laureate Brian Schmidt; and Australia’s Chief Scientist Alan Finkel.

Over 180,000 people attend World Science Festival Brisbane – an impressive 40% increase on 2016. Media coverage was extraordinary, with 944 media stories reaching a cumulative audience of 20 million. In addition to the Brisbane flagship event, World Science Festival Brisbane expanded to include regional engagement in Gladstone, Toowoomba, Chinchilla and Townsville.

The festival attracted 34 partners from government, academia and private industry, contributing $3.5 million in cash and in-kind support. Without the spirit of generosity demonstrated by our partners and affiliates, World Science Festival Brisbane would simply not be possible. Holding the exclusive licence to host World Science Festival Brisbane in the Asia Pacific until 2021, we look forward to continuing to work in partnership to ignite new and challenge discussions about the role of STEM in Australia and the Asia Pacific.
