TIPS TO SPEED UP PLAY

COURSE NEWS

Renovations are complete and the greens have recovered nicely. The tees have been renovated as well and heavily over sown. Members who are playing a social round should always play from the social markers. The competition tees are being set forward of the plates intentionally to protect them from wear so that they are in good condition for the championships. Please keep off them if you are practising.

It is anticipated that a fairway renovation will take place in March 2015. This will involve over sowing ryegrass similar to the trial area on the 5th fairway. The ryegrass will be sown in March and transition in during winter and the couch/kikuyu transition in during the warmer months. This will allow a more consistent playing surface all year round with consistent colour.

Continue enjoying your golf, respect your course and good luck to all in the Championships.

Course Super – Bryan Kelly

Well, the Club Championships are nearly upon us. You may have seen the new colourful flyers around the club house and the pro shop and entry forms are now available online and at the course, with over $8,000 in prizes to be won it should be a great tournament. The Prize Cupboard will be full with prizes this year - most have been provided by our prize sponsor Harvey Norman and the daily prizes being supplied by our very own Jake Nagle. There will be a Presentation each evening of the championship at 6:30pm (or as close as practical) to give out daily prizes and update on the Championship Standings.

So far we have had a limited interest in volunteering to help out during the championships. The success of the event this year will depend greatly on the help of our volunteers. Even if you can give

as little as an hour of your time it will be greatly appreciated.

This year the first round of the Championship (18th Oct) will be the monthly medal round. On the following Saturday (25th Oct) the Medal of Medals rounds will be held in conjunction with the Championships. I would like to take this opportunity to make a special mention of one of our members who has distinguished himself this year. Roger Royal not only won the August Medal for B Grade but he then followed it up with an outstanding back to back performance to win the September B Grade Medal. If I was a betting man my money would be on Rodger to take out the B Grade Champions Trophy this year. Congratulation and well done from everyone at QGC!

Four old men went into the pro shop after playing

18 holes of golf. The pro asked, "Did you guys

have a good game today? “The first old guy said,

"Yes, I had three riders today."

The second old guy said, "I had the most riders

ever. I had five. "The third old guy said, "I had

seven riders, the same as last time."

The last old man said, "I beat my old record. I had

12 riders today."

After they went into the locker room, another

golfer who had heard the old guys talking about

their game went to the pro and said, "I've been

playing golf for a long time and thought I knew all

the terminology of the game, but what's a rider?

"The pro said, "A rider is when you hit the ball far

enough to actually get in the golf cart and ride to

it.

On Tuesday 16th September we held an afternoon tea to farewell our former Patron and Life Member Joan Kinsey, who is relocating to Wagga with her family. Many past and present players attended, enjoying the company, coffee, cakes and of course the bubbly.

QUEANBEYAN GOLF CLUB NEWSLETTER

With the weather warming over the past few weeks it has been pleasing to see an increase in social players on the course and larger competition fields. Whilst competition rounds may take a little longer as a result and social players may impact on your round please be understanding and considerate to all players on the course. It is imperative that we increase the number of players utilising the facility so please make guests feel welcome.

There has been concern from a number of members regarding the removal of trees on the 4th hole. Following a resident complaint the council sent out an arborist to inspect the trees and concurred that the two willows were rotting through the core and were correctly removed. He was also satisfied with the removal of the remaining gum in the area. A policy relating to future removal of trees / replanting will be implemented with the assistance of QCC.

In the bar you will see some new faces. Konika and Sean have joined the team so please make them feel welcome. Carlton Black returns due to popular demand and One Fifty Lashes will be retained in stubby form.

If you haven’t had a chance yet check out the TAB kiosk terminal for all your sports betting requirements including live betting. If you require any assistance please ask one of the staff to provide some assistance.

Over the next few months we will be introducing some new competitions so keep an eye out. Jake has introduced a Tuesday afternoon 9 hole competition to get the ball rolling. Enter online or through the pro shop. This is a handicapped event and is open to members and guests.

THE ADDICTION

In a world featuring such a myriad of sports, games and hobbies (that are often far less time consuming), why is it that someone can get so addicted to golf? Why do you have so much trouble getting out of bed at 7am to go to work, but will happily don the plaid pants to go play golf at 6am? The problem with answering the question is that it’s impossible to answer. You simply must have played the game, played that sweet shot or sunk the big putt to truly understand why we buy the new driver, wear the crazy clothes, get so infuriated and do it all again a week later.

TIPS TO SPEED UP PLAY

Hit a provisional If there is even the slightest chance that a wayward ball could go walkabout, play a provisional — resist the rarely-accurate urge to say “Nah, we’ll probably find it.”

If it’s lost, it’s lost

When your five minutes is up, it’s up. Declare it lost and move on. (You DID play a provisional on the tee, right?)
