CHILD SEATS

E72336

WARNINGSExtreme Hazard! Do not use achild restraint on a seat

protected by an airbag in front of it!Original text according to ECER94.01: Extreme Hazard! Do not

use a rearward facing child restrainton a seat protected by an air bag infront of it!

There is a risk of death orserious injury when the airbag

deploys.

Always have the rear row headrestraint raised when a child

restraint is being installed oroccupying the seat, provided doingso does not move the child restraintaway from the vehicle seat.

Note: If the vehicle has beeninvolved in an accident, have the childsafety seat checked by an expert asit might be damaged.

Note: Do not leave childrenunattended in the child safety seat orin the vehicle.

Note: When installing a childseat/restraint with the seat belt, always ensure belts fit without slackor twists.

WARNINGThere is a risk of death orserious injury when the

manufacturer’s instructions are notfollowed properly or when the childseat/restraint is modified in any way.

Whenever installing a childseat/restraint, always read and followthe manufacturer’s instructions.

WARNINGDo not hold a child on your lapwhile the vehicle is moving.

Children of height 150 cm or underor aged 12 years or under should besecured in special restraints forchildren, such as baby seats, childsafety seats or booster cushions inthe rear seats.

Such equipment must be suitableand government approved(depending on country).

A choice of ECE approved childrestraints is available at your FordDealer. Please ask for therecommended child seats. Togetherwith the adult seat belt, theserestraints help to provide maximumsecurity for the children.

Child restraints for differentmass groups

The correct restraint to be useddepends on the child’s age andweight:

Baby safety seat

E72337

Babies under 13 kg (approximately18 months) are best protected ifproperly restrained in rearward facingbaby safety seats (Group 0+) onthe rear seat.

Child safety seat

E72338

Children weighing between 13 and18 kg (approximately nine months tofour years old) should be carriedproperly restrained in child safetyseats (Group I) in the rear seat.

CHILD SEATPOSITIONING

WARNINGSIf your Ford vehicle is equippedwith a front passenger airbag,

children of height 150 cm or under oraged 12 years and under must onlybe properly restrained in the rear seat– never in the front.

Extreme Hazard! Do not use arearward facing child restraint

on a seat protected by an airbag infront of it!

WARNINGSYou should never use a boosterseat with only a lap belt.Never put the shoulder beltunder a child’s arm or behind

the back.Never use pillows, books, ortowels to boost a child.

Children weighing more than 15 kgand under 150 cm should use abooster seat or booster cushion.Ford recommends using boosterseats that combine a boostercushion and a back rest into one seatfor children between 15 and 25 kg.The raised seating position ensuresthat the adult seat belt can becorrectly guided over the centre ofthe shoulder instead of along theneck, the lap belt lying tightly acrossthe hips instead of the stomach.Make sure that your child sits in anupright position.

Integrated booster cushion

Note: Do not use the raised boostercushion together with a child safetyseat.

The booster cushion should be usedfor children from approximately 6 to12 years, with a height of up to 150cm and weighing between 22 and36 kg.

PRINCIPLE OF OPERATION

Airbags

E72324

WARNINGDo not modify the front of thevehicle in any way, as this can

adversely affect the airbagdeployment.

Note: A loud bang will be heardwhen an airbag deploys and it isnormal to see a cloud of harmlesspowdery residue.

The airbag system comprises thefollowing:

• dual-stage inflatable nylon bags(airbags) with gas generators.

• side airbags• curtain airbags• seat belt pretensioners• occupant sensors

• crash sensors.• a warning lamp in the instrument

panel.• an electronic control and

diagnostic unit.

E72330

25

Occupant protection

Page 28: Owner'shandbook FordMondeo · The information contained in this publication was correct at the time of going to print. In the interest of development the right is reserved to change

WARNINGSRepairs to either of the frontseat covers, the sensors

attached to the seats as well as tothe roof lining should only be carriedout by properly trained technicians.Injuries may result if the side airbagsare triggered inadvertently.

Do not block, obstruct or coverthe airbag because it may

prevent proper deployment. Do notpoke any sharp objects into the areaswhere airbags are fitted. This coulddamage the airbags.

Do not use any accessory seatcovers that are not specifically

designed for seats with side airbags. These seat covers must be fitted byproperly trained technicians.

E66553

WARNINGAlways wear the seat belt andkeep sufficient distance

between the driver and the steeringwheel. Only when the seat belt isused properly, can it hold the bodyin a position which allows the airbagto achieve its optimum effect. Thereis a risk of injury when the airbagdeploys.

The seat and back must be setcorrectly for the airbags to beoptimally effective. See Sitting in thecorrect position (page 90).

This is the ideal seating position forthe driver and front passenger andhelps reduce the risk of injury fromsitting too close to an inflating airbag.

E72325

The front airbags activate duringsignificant collisions which areeither frontal or up to 30degrees from the left or the right. The airbags inflate within a fewthousandths of a second. They willdeflate on contact with the frontoccupants thus cushioning forwardbody movement.

26

Occupant protection

Page 29: Owner'shandbook FordMondeo · The information contained in this publication was correct at the time of going to print. In the interest of development the right is reserved to change

E72326

During minor collisions as well asoverturns and rear or side collisions, the front airbag system will not beactivated.

E72327

WARNINGSRepairs to the steering wheel, steering column and airbag

system should be carried out byproperly trained technicians.

Always keep the areas in frontof the airbags free. Never affix

anything to or over these areas.

These areas should only be wipedwith a damp cloth, never with a wetcloth.

Dual-stage strategy

A system of sensors in the vehiclemonitors vehicle speed, the status ofthe seat belt and the position of thedriver’s seat. In case of an accident, the system is able to analyze differentcrash and occupant conditions andactivate the appropriate safetydevices.

In most airbag deployments, the firststage is deployed to provideoccupant restraint. The second stageis deployed afterwards. In the mostsevere crash events both stages aredeployed to provide occupantrestraint.

The system increases the safetypotential particularly for drivers whoare not of a standard height or not ina standard seating position.

PRINCIPLE OFOPERATION

The engine immobilisation system isa theft protection feature whichprevents the engine from beingstarted with an incorrectly coded key.

CODED KEYS

E66506

Your vehicle is supplied with codedkeys.

WARNINGIf a key is lost, it is imperative toerase and recode the remaining

keys. Consult your dealer if you nowhave only one valid key.

Replacement keys must be recodedtogether with your other keys.

In case of loss, replacement keys areavailable from dealers by stating thekey number shown on the tagprovided with the original keys.

Note: To ensure a trouble−free dataexchange between the vehicle andkey, do not shield the keys with anymetal objects.

E66505

Key coding

A maximum of eight keys (includingthe ones supplied with the vehicle)can be coded using two other keyspreviously coded for your vehicle.

Complete each of the following stepswithin five seconds.

E66507

1. Insert the first key in the ignitionswitch and turn to position II.

2. Turn the key back to position 0and remove from the ignitionswitch.

41

Engine immobiliser

3. Insert the second key in theignition switch and turn to positionII.

4. Turn the second key back toposition 0 and remove from theignition switch − the key codingmode is now activated.

5. If an uncoded key is now insertedin the ignition switch and turnedto position II within 10 seconds, this key is coded to the system.

6. After the coding process iscompleted, remove the key fromthe ignition switch. Wait fiveseconds for the system to beactivated.

If coding is not completed correctly, the indicator light flashes after theignition is switched on with the newlycoded key and the engine will notstart.

Repeat the coding process afterwaiting 20 seconds with the ignitionswitched on (position II).

Coding erasure

With two keys coded for your vehicleyou can make all the other codedkeys unusable, e.g. after loss:

Complete each of the following stepswithin five seconds.

Carry out the first four steps underKey coding, then continue asfollows:

E66508

• Insert the second key in theignition switch and turn to positionII.

• Remove the key from the ignitionswitch.

• Insert the first key in the ignitionswitch, turn to position II and hold. The control light flashes for fiveseconds.

• If the ignition is switched off duringthese five seconds, the erasureprocess is terminated and no keyis erased.

• If the erasure process iscompleted, all the other keys, apart from the two used forerasure, can no longer be usedunless recoded.

Additional keys can now be coded.

ARMING THE ENGINEIMMOBILISER

E70359

The system is armed five secondsafter switching off the ignition. Theindicator lamp in the clock will flash.

DISARMING THE ENGINEIMMOBILISER

Switching on the ignition disarms thesystem if the correct code isrecognised. The indicator lamp in theclock illuminates for approximatelythree seconds and thenextinguishes.

If the indicator lamp flashes forapproximately one minute and thenrepeatedly at irregular intervals, thesystem did not recognise the keycode. Remove the key and try again.

If a key with an incorrect code wasused, a waiting period of about 20seconds is required before startingthe vehicle with a correctly codedkey.

If the engine does not start, a systemmalfunction has occurred. Have thesystem checked by an expertimmediately.

ARMING THE ALARM

Note: If the vehicle is locked with thekey, this does not activate the alarmsystem (vehicles with 3.0 l Duractec−VE/-ST or 2.5l Duractec−VE engineand enhanced security).

The system is armed as soon as thevehicle is locked and acts as adeterrent to unauthorised personswho attempt to open the doors, bonnet or luggage compartment, orremove the audio system.

Interior sensors

Note: The interior sensors functioncorrectly only if all windows and thesunroof are completely closed. Inaddition to this, the sensors must notbe covered up. The system shouldnot be activated if any persons, animals or other moving objects areinside the vehicle.

Note: Do not activate the interiorsensors if an additional heatingsystem is used, as the alarm couldotherwise be set off.

The interior sensors monitor anymovement within the vehicle.

The interior sensors are activatedtogether with the double lockingsystem.

Automatic arming delay

Up to 20 seconds after activating theanti-theft alarm system, it is stillpossible to open the vehicle againwithout triggering the alarm. Afterthat, the anti-theft alarm system willmonitor all doors, the bonnet and thetailgate, provided that they areclosed.

If a door, the bonnet or the tailgate isclosed later, the system will monitorit after 20 seconds.

Alarm

The alarm sounds for 30 seconds ifan unauthorised person opens adoor, the luggage compartment orthe bonnet, or if the interior sensors(optional) register any movementinside the vehicle.

The hazard warning flashers will flashfor five minutes.

Any attempt to start the engine or toremove the audio system sounds thealarm again.

DISARMING THE ALARM

The anti-theft alarm system can bedeactivated at any time – even whenthe alarm is sounding – by unlockingthe driver’s door with the key or withthe remote control.

PRINCIPLE OFOPERATION

Outside air

Always keep the air intakes forwardof the front windscreen free of snow, leaves etc., to allow the system tofunction effectively.

Recirculated air

Note: It is not recommended to userecirculated air for more than 30minutes as there is no air exchangeand the windows may mist up.

When recirculated air is selected, onlythe air currently in the passengercompartment will be circulated.Outside air will not enter the vehicle.

Fresh air filter/activecarbon filter

The fresh air filter removes mostpotentially harmful particles such aspollen, industrial fallout and road dustfrom the air entering the vehicle’sinterior. The active carbon filterremoves odours.

In an automatic car wash, you shouldswitch off the ventilation blower toprevent the filter collecting waxdeposits.

Blower

The blower motor may emit noises.

Heating

The heating depends upon thecoolant temperature and is thereforeonly effective when the engine iswarm.

Air conditioning

Note: The air conditioning systemonly operates when the temperatureis above +5 ºC, the engine is runningand the blower is switched on.Operating the air conditioning leadsto higher fuel consumption.

The air is directed through thecoolant heat exchanger where it iscooled if the air conditioning isswitched on. In addition, humidity isextracted from the air to help keepthe windows free of mist.

The resulting condensation isdirected to the outside of the vehicle. It is therefore quite normal if younotice a small pool of waterunderneath the parked vehicle.

General notes oncontrolling the climate inthe vehicle’s interior

Close all the windows completely.

To warm the interior effectively, directthe heated air to the footwell area. Incold or humid weather, direct someof the air towards the frontwindscreen and side windows.

To cool the interior effectively, directthe cooled air towards the face level.

Depending on the model variant, thetransmission in your vehicle is a 4- or5-speed transmission. Bothtransmissions are electronicallycontrolled but they also allow you tochange gear manually.

Gear selection

E72458

WARNINGWhen the vehicle is stationary, apply the parking brake or

depress the footbrake beforeselecting a gear. Failure to do socould result in the vehicle pullingaway when you have engaged agear.

Note: A cold engine runs at a higheridling speed after starting. Thiscauses a strong ‘creep’ tendency inreverse and all forward gears.

To select lever positions R and P, youmust first depress the locking buttonon the selector lever grip. On4−speed transmissions also whenselecting position 2 (except changingfrom 1 to 2).

P = Park

WARNINGSThis position should be selectedonly when the vehicle is

stationary.Always apply the parking brakeand make sure that the selector

lever is securely latched in P. Turn offthe ignition whenever you leave thevehicle.

If position P is not selected, awarning chime will sound when

the driver’s door is opened.

In this position, the transmission islocked.

The engine should be started withthe selector lever in position P. Ifnecessary, it can also be started inposition N.

After starting the engine, the levercan be moved out of this positiononly when the foot brake isdepressed and the lockingbutton pressed in.

R = Reverse

WARNINGThis position should be selectedonly when the vehicle is

stationary and the engine is idling.

E66565

Depress the brake pedal whenselecting R.

N = Neutral

WARNINGIn this position, you have todepress the brake pedal or

apply the parking brake to preventthe vehicle from moving.

In this position no power istransmitted to the drive wheels.

D = Drive

This is the normal driving position. When the brake is released, thevehicle will creep. All forward gearsare selected automatically dependingon driving conditions.

+/− = Gears 1−5 (5-speedtransmission)

When shifting manually, gears 1, 2,3, 4 and 5 can be selected.

2 = Gear 2 (4-speedtransmission)

The transmission remainspermanently in second gear. Thisposition should be selected on downhill gradients to avoid unnecessaryuse of the brakes, and on long uphillgradients and twisty roads. It can alsobe used for initial start-off on icyroads.

Manual shifting (5-speedtransmission)

E72460

Manually selecting gears with theautomatic transmission is similar toshifting with a manual transmission. This option can be selected when thevehicle is either stationary or inmotion.

Move the gearshift lever to D, andthen guide it to the right. When thevehicle is stationary, only the gears 1and 2 can be selected.

E72461

To shift down, gently push thegearshift lever forwards (−) or pressa − button on the steering wheelspokes. To shift up, gently pull itbackwards (+) or press a + button onthe steering wheel spokes. You canshift up or down only one gear at atime. For your safety and comfort, the transmission will perform yourmanual gear selection when vehiclespeed and engine speed areappropriate.

E72459

The manually selected gear will beshown in the multifunction display assoon as the transmission performedthe selection.

Moving off

E72465

With the engine idling and the brakepedal depressed, move the selectorlever to one of the driving positions.Release the brakes. The vehicle willstart to move slowly in the selecteddirection. Depress the acceleratorpedal to increase speed.

Moving off in sand, mud andsnow

E72466

If the driving wheels are stuck, try torock the vehicle free by drivingforwards and backwards. To do this, move the selector lever alternatelyto D and R and depress theaccelerator as little as possible. Toincrease the effect, move theselector lever to R while the vehicleis still moving forward and vice versa.

To avoid excessive wear on thetransmission when shifting betweenforward and reverse (rocking) keepthe engine speed as low as possible.

In winter, position 2 (4-speedtransmission) or second gear(5-speed transmission) may be usedfor initial drive-off on icy orsnow-covered surfaces.

PRINCIPLE OFOPERATION

Dual circuit braking system

WARNINGIf a brake circuit fails, you will atfirst experience a softer feel to

the brake pedal. You will then needto exert a greater force on the brakepedal, and make allowance forincreased stopping distances. Havethe braking system checked by anexpert before continuing yourjourney.

E66564

Your vehicle is equipped with adiagonally split dual circuit brakingsystem. If one of the brake circuitsfails, the other remains operative.

Disc brakes

E66565

Wet brake discs result in reducedbraking efficiency.

After leaving a carwash or driving thevehicle through water, dab the brakepedal while driving to remove the filmof water.

Emergency brake assist

WARNINGEmergency brake assist is anadditional system which is not

intended to relieve the driver of hisresponsibility for exercising due careand attention when driving.

Emergency brake assist is able todetect an emergency brakingsituation by measuring the rate atwhich the brake pedal is applied. Itautomatically provides maximumbraking efficiency as long as thepedal is applied. This can reducestopping distances in criticalsituations.

HINTS ON DRIVING WITHABS

WARNINGAlthough the ABS ensuresoptimum braking efficiency,

stopping distances can vary greatlydepending on the road surface andconditions. Use of the ABS cannoteliminate the dangers inherent indriving too close to the vehicle in frontof you, aquaplaning, excessivecornering speed or poor roadsurfaces.

WARNINGDrivers should never takeunnecessary risks even though

ESP offers inherently safer drivingpotential.

ESP provides an enhanced tractioncontrol function by reducing wheelspin at the driven wheels whenaccelerating. This improves the abilityto pull away on slippery roads orloose surfaces. The system alsosupports stability by counteractingthe tendency of the vehicle to swerveaway from the intended path. This isperformed by braking individualwheels and/or reducing enginetorque as needed.

PRINCIPLE OFOPERATION

WARNINGThe parking aid is an auxiliarysystem which is not intended to

relieve the driver of his responsibilityfor exercising due care and attentionwhen reversing. In particular, someobjects close to the vehicle (approx.30 cm) and above or below thesensors may not be detected by thepark distance sensor and causedamage to the vehicle. Ultrasonicwaves, heavy rain and/or conditionscausing disruptive reflections maylead to objects not being detectedby the sensors. In addition, objectswhich absorb ultrasonic waves maynot always be detected due to theirunfavourable surface characteristics.

USING THE PARKING AID

E72518

WARNINGBe careful when a tow bar isinstalled.

Note: If the vehicle is fitted with anoriginal Ford fixed tow bar, particularcare must be taken when reversing.

The system is activated automaticallyafter the reverse gear is selected withthe ignition switched on. A short tonewill sound to indicate systemreadiness.

The measuring range is divided intofive warning zones. As the distanceto an obstacle reduces, a warningsounds, beginning as a slow bleepand increasing to a continuous tone.

A system failure will be indicated bya deep continuous tone or a deeptone sounding in three-secondintervals. Have the system checkedby an expert.

Vehicles with Original Ford towingequipment, whether fixed ordetachable, will indicate the distancefrom the bumper to the obstacle.

Always keep the sensors free fromdirt, ice and snow (do not clean withsharp objects).

Make sure the vehicle is standing onlevel ground. Check the engine oilbefore starting the engine. If theengine was running, switch it off andwait some minutes for the engine oilto flow back into the sump beforechecking it. Pull out the dipstick, wipeit with a clean, non-fluffy cloth,re-insert it completely and pull it outonce more.

If the level is between the marks, there is no need to refill. Hot oil mayexceed the MAX mark by a fewmillimetres due to thermal expansion.

If the level is at the MIN mark, refillusing only engine oil meeting theFord specification. Approximately0.5-1.5 litres (depending on engine)of engine oil will raise the level of theoil film on the dipstick from the MINto the MAX mark.
