Outdoor Leadership — Part 1
Page 3
Question 1 You are the leader of a small group on a multi-day bushwalk. The group has the option of taking a side trip up a mountain which will take several hours. This side trip is a steep, rugged and challenging ascent with spectacular views at the summit, and you, as the leader, think it is beneficial for the whole group to complete it. The group is evenly split as to whether or not they want to take this side trip. Choose and describe two leadership theories such as transactional, transformational and conditional outdoor leadership theory (COLT). Give examples, based on the situation above, that show how differences in the application of your two chosen leadership theories can lead to different outcomes. ....................................................................................................................................................... ....................................................................................................................................................... ....................................................................................................................................................... ....................................................................................................................................................... ....................................................................................................................................................... ....................................................................................................................................................... ....................................................................................................................................................... ....................................................................................................................................................... ....................................................................................................................................................... ....................................................................................................................................................... ....................................................................................................................................................... ....................................................................................................................................................... ....................................................................................................................................................... ....................................................................................................................................................... ....................................................................................................................................................... ....................................................................................................................................................... ....................................................................................................................................................... ....................................................................................................................................................... ....................................................................................................................................................... .......................................................................................................................................................

Answer ALL questions in this section. It is recommended you spend 20 minutes on this section. Question 8 Despite difficult conditions and bad weather, you have successfully led a group of seven senior students to the summit of Mount Cliché, an imposing and rugged mountain. Half-way through the four-day return journey, two of your students are still in their sleeping bags and refuse to leave the warmth, comfort and security of the hut the group stayed in overnight. The other five students are fully packed and waiting on the verandah, knowing that the group can visit a unique indigenous rock art site along the way if there is enough time. As the two groups strongly defend their positions, you can feel the tension between them escalating. SECTION A
Answer Question 10 in this section. It is recommended that you spend 30 minutes on this section. Question 10 (30 minutes) A wilderness in South-West Tasmania that incorporates the Franklin and Gordon Rivers was used by 19th-century piners in their search for King Billy Pine and Huon Pine. This wood was used in building boats and crafting fine furniture. In the 1960s, the Lake Pedder Dam was constructed in this area by the Hydro-Electric Commission who also planned to dam the Franklin River with the aim of further boosting Tasmania’s electricity production. In 1981, this area was reclassified as the Franklin-Gordon Wild Rivers National Park, and in 1982 it was declared a World Heritage Area. Describe how the following might well have experienced and related to this area in their time: • 19th-century Piners • 1960s Hydro-Electric workers • present-day visitors to the World Heritage Area. ....................................................................................................................................................... ....................................................................................................................................................... ....................................................................................................................................................... ....................................................................................................................................................... ....................................................................................................................................................... ....................................................................................................................................................... ....................................................................................................................................................... ....................................................................................................................................................... ....................................................................................................................................................... .......................................................................................................................................................

SECTION B
Answer ONE question from this section. It is recommended that you spend 30 minutes on this section. Question 11 (30 minutes) At 1446 metres, Frenchmans Cap, in South-West Tasmania, is the most prominent peak in the Franklin-Gordon Wild Rivers National Park. Earlier this year, the well-known Australian entrepreneur Dick Smith opened a replacement section that bypassed the well-known and notorious boot-sucking bog on the South Loddon Plains, renamed the ‘Sodden Loddons’ by bushwalkers for its four-kilometre stretch of deep mud that turned the original track into an ordeal. Dick Smith donated $1 million towards the building of the new track because:
‘the damage that myself and fellow bushwalkers have been doing, it didn’t make me feel good … now … that will all gradually rehabilitate. I mainly did it for the environmental benefit. I didn’t like the idea that walkers had done so much damage to the area. In some of the areas … the bog was over your knees’. (Source: adapted from The Mercury, 31 July 2013)
Not all walkers are happy with the new track. Many logbook entries along the track describe a desire to walk through the ‘Sodden Loddons’ for a variety of reasons, such as bushwalkers considering it to be a ‘rite of passage’. Other entries suggest that building a new track has simply increased usage and human impact in this area. In what ways do people’s reaction to this new track reflect their attitudes and values in regard to the natural environment? Question 12 (30 minutes) The Walls of Jerusalem, with about 4500 visitors each year, is the second most popular backcountry walking destination in the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area. Walking in this scenic alpine wilderness is one of the best walking experiences Tasmania has to offer. The Parks and Wildlife Service Tasmania recently announced a draft plan for the Walls of Jerusalem National Park. The plan details strategies for the next five to ten years that aim to protect both the area’s high conservation values and the visitor experience. Such a plan is needed because active deterioration is occurring on some unimproved track sections and campsites. Illegal campfire use is on the rise and, prior to installation of a temporary toilet at Dixons Kingdom, poor toileting practices were frequently noted. Use of the area by commercial guided walking groups is significant and is likely to increase with increasing publicity. School outdoor education programs are also major users of the area. Both these user groups, and some private groups, can be large parties that impact on the experience of others. Discuss how the issues mentioned above can impact on relationships between humans and nature.
