Build BackgroundHelp children use their knowledge of Antarctica to visualize the book. Read the title and author and talk about the cover illustration. Tell children that this book tells about McMurdo Station, one of the coldest places on Earth.

: Explain that this book tells about a special place at the bottom of the Earth, where many scientists and other people live and work.Suggested language: Turn to page 2. • Phonics/Word Work Provide practice as needed with words and word parts, using examples from the text. Remind children that longer words are often formed from shorter, familiar words. For example, the word rompehielos on page 5 is a compound word combining the words rompe and hielos. Point out that recognizing shorter words in compound words can help with reading longer words. Have children think of other compound words they know, for example, paraguas, sacapuntas, rompecabezas.
