Board Meeting of February 5, 2014
Mark Eley—Secretary
Members Present: Dr. William Bahn-
fleth (Society President), Mark Mizell
(Chapter President), Terry Jacks
(President Elect, Programs), Forrest
Moseley (Treasurer), Mark Eley
(Secretary), Russell Black, Bill Good-
man and Kim Koch (Board of Gover-
nors), Ron McCarty (Membership
Promotion), Melanie Richardson
(Webmaster), Max Good (Reception),
Caleb Haynes (YEA), Lee Greeson
(Newsletter), Drew Grant (Honors &
Awards) and Rick Sellers (CRC)
Call to Order: 10:28 a.m.
Society President – Dr. Bahnfleth:
Discussed changes to the certifi-
cation process for labeling build-
ings.
Member involvement is a concern
everywhere. Employer support of
ASHRAE is very important. We
need to get the message out to
companies that involvement in
ASHRAE develops good leadership
skills in their employees.
Discussed engaging educators at
both the university and high
school levels to develop interest
in ASHRAE. Dr. Bahnfleth men-
tioned that many universities only
have one HVAC class in the core
Mechanical Engineering curricu-
lum.
Educators follow the money that
is available for research. If more
money is available to fund re-
search at the university level then
the industry will have more sup-
port from educators.
Society is trying to give local
chapters more autonomy to deal
with local issues. An example
would be local industry codes.
Chapter President – Mark Mizell:
Spoke about the Nominating
Committee for next year’s offic-
ers. This is covered further under
“New Business”.
Mark encouraged us all to regis-
ter early for CRC at
www.arkansasasashrae.org. Early
Bird deadline is March 15th.
All chairs and officers need to
update their PAOE points and
communicate with their RVC.
President Elect – Terry Jacks:
We have three more scheduled
programs at the monthly meet-
ings.
Next month’s meeting will be
Thursday night, March 6th at US
Pizza in Hillcrest.
The Arkansas Hall of Fame meet-
ing is being planned.
We would like more technical
awards for the chapter and are
working on one currently.
Treasurer – Forrest Moseley:
The CRC Regions Bank entry still
shows over $10,000, but is actu-
ally $2,500. Everything else has
been moved to a separate CRC
checking account.
The NWA November attendance
sheets were lost so we are asking
for those who were in attendance
to let us know so we can invoice
them. There were 40-45 people
present, but we have received
only $200 to $250.
Membership Promotion – Ron
McCarty:
We currently have ten delinquent
members.
We have twenty-two new mem-
bers, four since the last meeting.
We have two newly upgraded
memberships.
Melanie Richardson – Webmaster:
New to the calendar: There will be
a PE Exam Review consisting of a
roundtable of recent test takers.
This will be February 20th at 6PM
at TME for anyone preparing to
take the exam.
Lee Greeson – Newsletter:
The newsletter deadline is Febru-
ary 21st.
Drew Grant – Honors and Awards:
Paperwork is being submitted to
Society so that we can have a new
(Continued on page 4)
Richard Royal as speakers.
CRC is a great way to network with
ASHRAE leaders from the Society and
Regional levels, as well as from the
other chapters in our region.
Bring your spouse along as they will
have fun with companion activities to
include a river cruise, painting ses-
sion, and massage.
Numerous registration options are
available: full event, social activities
only, technical programs only, and
golf only. Young Engineers in
ASHRAE will receive a discount. Reg-
ister today at ArkansasASHRAE.org
and support our chapter. The early-
bird discount ends March 15.
March’s meetings will be geared to-
ward Student Activities. Chapter
scholarships will be awarded. The
Little Rock meeting will be at 6 p.m.
on Thursday, March 6, in the upstairs
room at U.S. Pizza at 2710 Ka-
vanaugh in Hillcrest. We will revert
back to our normal time and place
for April.
Congratulations to the Arkansas
State University Student Chapter for
being granted $5,000 through
ASHRAE’s Senior Undergraduate Pro-
ject Grant Program for their project
titled, “Retrofitting of Air Conditioner
into Experimental HVAC Training
System with Data Acquisition.”

As this chapter year is winding down,
and we get closer to the CRC meet-
ing, we as a committee and as chap-
ter members still need to push for
additional membership growth. This
year we have had great influx of new
members. During this year a total of
20 new members have been added to
our Chapter.
Our account delinquencies rate this
year has continued to remain higher
than it has in the past. Part of this
appears to be related to the current
economic times. The Membership
Promotion committee is going to be
making additional efforts to contact
all outstanding dues and/or can-
celled members to significantly
decrease the delinquencies rate.
As mentioned in previous newsletter
articles the Membership promotion
committee will be increasing our
efforts to communicate to those
members that are eligible to upgrade
their membership. There is no addi-
tional cost for the upgrade to
“Member” membership grade. The
Member grade provides the member
the qualification for Fellow grade. In
addition, "Member" are considered
seasoned industry professionals and
are often seen as experts. The
process for upgrading is an easy
process that can be done online by
updating your Member Bio or by
email [email protected] indica
ting an interest in advancement. As
always, if anyone has any questions
or need any assistance, please do not
hesitate to contact Ron McCarty -
Membership Promotion Chairperson
([email protected] -501-350-
5728).

On February 6th and 7
th, stu-
dents from the University of
Arkansas and Arkansas State
University made their way to
Springfield, Missouri to partici-
pate in a tour of the Loren
Cook facilities. A total of
nineteen students made the
trip: nine from U of A and ten
from ASU, along with a Faculty
Advisor from each school and
two ASHRAE representatives
from TME, Inc. Loren Cook proved themselves extremely gracious hosts by
providing great hotel accommodations and meals for everyone both days, and
providing transportation in town for both groups. Thursday we were accompa-
nied to dinner by many of the Loren Cook top executives, followed by a trip to
the flagship Bass Pro Shop. Friday was also a busy day full of valuable learning
experiences in Loren Cook’s interactive learning facilities, R&D Facilities, facto-
ry, and product showcase rooms. In the interactive learning facilities, students
were given hands on demonstrations of everything from electric motor types to
heat recovery systems, including a particularly interesting activity of seeing real
-time static pressure and airflow changes caused by various duct fittings in-
stalled near a ducted fan. Testing facilities for fan performance and acoustical
analysis, along with one of many Cook Fan factories were also toured. Everyone
was also able to see products available from Loren Cook, their uses, their
unique features, and some of the engineering ideas behind different designs.
The students all really enjoyed the trip and were intent to tell their friends and
classmates about it after returning to Fayetteville and Jonesboro and to encour-
age them to make the trip next year.
A huge thanks goes out to both Airetech and Powers of Arkansas for helping
plan the trip, and of course to everyone at Loren Cook for being great hosts.

Zac Buckmiller—Student Activities
Chair
Student Activities would like to thank
Dr. Bahnfleth for taking some of his
time while in the state of Arkansas to
meet with our local student chapters
to talk ASHRAE. Being a teacher, Dr.
Bahnfleth was able to easily connect
with the student to talk about the
importance of ASHRAE in the indus-
try as well what ASHRAE can do for
them.

Congratulations to Dr. Kwangkook
and the students at Arkansas
State. Their submission to ASHRAE’s
Senior Undergraduate Project Grant
Program titled “Retrofitting of Air-
Conditioner into Experimental HVAC
Training System with Data Acquisi-
tion” was approved for foundering in
the amount of $5,000. An experi-
mental HVAC trainer will be devel-
oped by retrofitting a room air condi-
tioner. The system will be modified
with pressure gauges, thermocou-
ples, flowmeters, and DAQ. Rede-
sign follows up with students’ discus-
sion, planning, and fabrication under
advisor’s direction. The project inte-
grates students’ learned engineering
principles and benefits their hands-
on experiences.
