Thetools have been engineered toprovide maximum dust extractionat low suction power and have alow noise level even when operat-ing at their maximum 12,000 rpm.The sanders feature a revolution-ary brake seal, which eliminatesthe possibility of causing deepmarks in the surface when the fastrotating abrasive first touches thematerial. The Mirka PROS® 550DBis available with 125 mm pads andthe Mirka PROS® 650DB comeswith 150 mm pads. Both areequipped with dust extraction andpneumatic hoses, fastening stripsand Mirka’s new fleece dust bag.

Hoffmann willagain be demon-strating its manymachines usingthe versatile Hoff-mann double-dovetail-jointingsystem and itstechnicians will beshowing visitorsthe many advan-tages of time-sav-ing, improvedjoint quality, andincreased produc-tion which can beachieved whenusing the Hoff-mann Key.

The combina-tion machine, Hoffmann MS35SFwith integrated chop-saw, will beof particular interest to door-setmanufacturers. Developed fromone of the company’s standardmachines, this bespoke machinewill produce completed doorarchitraves in series productionfrom bar length, profiled material(either MDF or solid wood).

Each architrave set is producedwith square ends and mitres

where appropriate and can be,when required, simultaneouslyrouted for jointing with HoffmannKeys.

Each architrave set can be pre-pared in less than one minute.

Hoffmann also offers an alter-native method for producing thejoints in door frames.

Door frame joints can be sim-plified by mitring the same pro-files and joining with dowels and

Hoffmann Keys. Machinery for thisprocess (Hoffmann PP-2 NC) andsamples will be on display at W16for customer inspection.

The Hoffmann bench-top ma-chines MU-2 and MU-2P will bedemonstrated throughout the du-ration of the show to illustrate thesimplicity of this jointing method.

Vision panels, picture frames, mitred cabinet doors, stretcherframes, beaded face frames, cor-

nices, window and door casings, jewelry boxes, hand rails, architec-tural work, post and beam con-struction, curtain walling and rooflanterns are just a few of the manyapplications which regularly useHoffmann Keys to secure thejoints.

Numerous examples of applica-tion for the Hoffmann Keys will bedisplayed and demonstrated forcustomers’ scrutiny, advice and foradditional applications. Customerswishing to evaluate a specific ap-plication can have their own pro-files processed by Hoffmanntechnicians at the exhibition.

The Hoffmann/Morso solutionfor the manufacture of beadedface frames will also be demon-strated. Cabinets with beaded faceframes immediately convey a highlevel of quality and craftsmanship.Designers and consumers have re-discovered this style and conse-quently demand for beaded faceframes is on the rise. At W16 Hoff-mann technicians will demon-strate how beaded face framescan be made accurately and withall the flexibility as required for be-spoke cabinets. Demonstrations offace frame manufacture will bemade on the stand at customers’request.Hoffmann Machine Company

WHEN INVESTING in a new pieceof equipment, choosing the rightsupplier is just as important aschoosing the right machine.

J & C O’Meara Ltd was formedsome 26 years ago by father andson service engineers MessrsJoseph and Carl O’Meara. Backthen the company’s main activitiesrevolved around service/mainte-nance and installation work alongwith the refurbishment of usedwoodworking machinery.

Around 15 years ago, the com-pany saw the demand for new ma-chinery increase where customers preferred a quality product with a fullwarranty at a discounted price as opposed to upgraded older machin-ery. To this day, that trend has continued to the degree that the supply ofnew equipment accounts for over 90% of the company’s machinery sales. The reason for this is explained by Carl O’Meara: “It’s quite simple really,we offer quality new machinery at discounted prices, all backed up byour no nonsense guarantee. We also enjoy the fact that we are not a tra-ditional sales outlet. We are a totally independent supplier of quality newmachinery where we have the opportunity to go out into the global mar-ket and use our expertise to source new and exciting products that givethat little bit more than is ordinarily available.”

This year at W16, some of the best selling machines from the Genisis brandwill be displayed on Stand G810 including:

Genisis 512S PCD edge bander with pre mill and corner rounding: Thisnew and innovative edge banding machinehas literally taken the industry by storm andnow brings the capability of a high specifi-cation machine, of compact construction tothe small to medium sized furniture maker. The machine is ideal for coil fed materials upto 2 mm in thickness, has pre milling, thecombined flush/end/corner rounding trim-mers believed to be unique, scrapers, sol-vent cleaners and buffers to give a ready touse finish all working a very fast productionof 12 m/min.

The machine is equipped with a touchscreen display and has pre heating of thepanel edge to assist in the bonding processduring the colder months. This machine willbe working and ready for demonstration atthe exhibition.

Genisis P32 sliding table panel saw: Hav-ing previously sold a German brand of saw,Cal knew exactly what he wanted when hedecided to introduce a new machine intothe market. This was back in 2006 and now,

with over 100 machines installed around the UK, this has proved to bethe company’s best selling panel saw. From that very first cut starts a se-quence of events that will determine the level of quality and accuracy ofhow a piece of furniture evolves, this is where the strengths of themachine lie, from the reinforced multi chamber sliding table, to usinglarge diameter rollers to ensure an easy gliding and accurate motion tothe fine details from the flip stops to the clear flat scales.

Genisis briquetters: Choosing the right briquetter has been seen asquite a complicated process, when in reality it can be relatively simple.Firstly, material ideally needs a moisture content of around 8-14% andthen you just need to know how much waste you are looking to process. All machines have a ‘maximum output’ but this of course depends uponthe material being processed. Once this has been established, simplychoose the right machine for you. J & C O’Meara has 15 different models

to choose from, all use a Siemens touchscreen control and all have a load sensor toallow them to work automatically whenwaste is entered into the hopper.

All machines compact at a very high pres-sure (around 160 bar) to ensure a com-pletely solid briquette is formed thatmaintains its shape if packed and trans-ported and of course during burning. Therange of models includes the compactNano, the traditional style gravity fedmachines and the vertical machines whichhave an auger feed and sensor on the out-put to automatically increase or decreasethe amount of waste being entered into thecompression chamber, thus automaticallycompensating for the waste beingprocessed if shifting from dust to shavings.

The vertical series is also easier to inte-grate under a dust extractor to eliminate themanual handling of the waste. They evenhave a machine capable of compacting MDFdust … On display and ready to demon-strate will be the Traditional E55 and the Ver-tical E60 Super machines.

OMC heated press: This machine simplyneeds to be seen to be appreciated. Built inBergamo, Italy, OMC constructs its machineframes using structurally graded steel. Theframe is that of a 200 tonne machine butmaximum pressure is capped to 160 tonnesacross the 3,100 x 1,550 mm platen. Themachine is oil heated and uses the latesttouch screen technology to control the heat, pressure, cycle time and calculate the pres-sure and exclusion of the outer cylinderswhen only part loading. OMC builds a com-prehensive range of hot and cold platenpresses, membrane and liquid presses andhydraulic clamping machines.J & C O’Meara LtdTel 01704 893109info@ukwoodworkingmachinery.co.ukwww.ukwoodworkingmachinery.co.uk

Sanding solutions from Kündig at W16FROM solid wood to veneer tohigh gloss, if you are looking forthe ultimate surface finish,Kündig has the solution.

Established in 1945 in Zurich,Switzerland, and in keeping withthe tradition of many Swiss manu-facturers, Kündig is renowned forits accuracy, reliability and techni-cal innovation when it comes tobuilding wide belt and edge sand-ing machinery.

Around 20 years ago, Kündig setnew standards by introducing thefixed bed machines where thesanding group adjusts to the work-ing height. This system is still em-ployed today and guarantees longterm accuracy as opposed to mov-ing bed machines which tend to goout of level after a period of time.

For processing of solid wood, this fixed bed supports the weightof heavy works being processed:an example of this is a machinewhich processes butcher’s blocksweighing around half a tonneeach. Not only does this fixed partof the machine support the work, but also the pressure generatedduring processing whether it beusing a cutter block (yes, Kündigcan offer these for a high stock re-moval) or for heavy cuts using theabrasives.

As advances are made in theprocessing of logs to veneers, theactual thickness of veneer hassubstantially reduced in recenttimes making the need for accu-rate sanding more important thanever. Available for sanding veneersare the electronically controlledsegmental sanding pads whichoffer equal and even sandingevery 35 mm across the width of

the machine, whilst sensing andprotecting the vulnerable cornersand edges of the panel. This is justone of the many reasons that theKündig wide belt sanding ma-chines are a favourite amongst thehigh class furniture makers whoregularly deal with exotic veneersand marquetry that needs to besanded both accurately and withconfidence.

In 2006, Kündig received theChallengers Award in Atlantawhich was in recognition for thedesign and development of itsoblique sanding head. As manyusers will know, traditional style‘straight line’ sanders are cursedwith wavy lines which run fromfront to back as the work piece issanded. These marks are known asoscillation marks and are causedby the deterioration of the sand-ing belt as the sharp edges of thegrit start to break off. By movingthe abrasive to an oblique positionthe whole sanding process ischanged dramatically. For exam-ple, the Oblique sanding head isusually the finishing head which isprobably using an 80 mm widepad and placing this to give ashear cutting action across thesurface eliminates the formationof these oscillation marks, as theabrasive is now travelling in a dif-ferent direction to that of the workpiece. This shear cutting actionalso gives a more even sand acrossthe surface, efficiently cuttingaway surface fibres giving a farflatter finish, especially importantto those who are looking toachieve a high gloss and truly re-flective surface.

Options for the wide belt ma-

chines include a cutter block forjointed panels for large stock re-moval or where the glue lineswould destroy the sanding belts, veneer cross belts, high gloss lac-quer cross belts and the new cupbrush system for sanding into pro-filed surfaces, eg routed MDF doors.

As the sanding specialists,Kündig also offers the construc-tion of bespoke machining solu-tions designated as the ‘Technic’range. These machines includemulti headed top and bottomsanders, sanders using structurebrushes, a range of machines forthe accurate calibration (± 0.02mm) of insulation materials, plas-tic, leather, cork, rubber, honey-comb, non ferrous metals, etc.

The Kündig range of edgesanders again follow in the tradi-tion of typical Swiss engineeringand start with the Basiq singlesided machine for solid wood. Most popular is the Uniq machine

which is double sided havingstepped tables and platens on oneside for fine sanding. These ma-chines also have adjustable oscil-lation to maximise the use of thesanding belt. The raise, lower andtilt of the abrasive is motorised toensure operator ease of use andthere are various options availableincluding a bobbin attachment forsanding curves, variable speed ofthe abrasive, mobile kit, etc. Thetop of the range Uniq-S has an in-tegrated feed system with variablespeed control and has optionsavailable to allow the sanding ofpainted or lacquered edges.

At W16 Kündig will be pleasedto present machines from both itsPremium and Brilliant rangesalong with its complete range ofedge sanding machines.Kündig LtdTel 0845 833 0565Email [email protected]

SAGETECH’S popular ZM range has just been updated. Having now been on the market for some five years, this competitively priced unit hasachieved extensive sales with signmakers both in the UK and overseas. Sagetech has opted at this time for an upgrade to also make itattractive to woodworkers who require much higher precision, repeatability and a stronger frame to cope with the heavier boardswhich they commonly use.

This new British made machine has been designed to take advantageof modern laser manufacturing techniques which, combined withmodern bearing systems, will give users higher accuracy and smootheroperation. At the same time the company has opted to strengthen theframe whilst also adding improvements to make installation easier.Stiffening up of the material support system will also enable users to loadmuch heavier sheets without loss of accuracy. As managing director KeithBunker remarked: “These changes have so improved the machines, itlooks like we have a world winner.“

Production is already under way, with the first batch already sold out, with more in production for W16 where it will be formally launched. Withthe company very much geared to selling through resellers both at homeand overseas, great emphasis is being made on achieving productexcellence with comprehensive support, which will include fullsupporting videos, thus offering a “drop ship” trouble free offering. Re-seller enquiries are welcome, both from those operating in the UK andoverseas.

The ZM is just one of the four ranges of machines offered by Britishmanufacturer Sagetech, who specialise in vertical panel saws for thesmaller business. The Zapkut is for lighter duties, starting with the ZK8portable unit, believed to be unique, which when not in use can befolded up compactly and stored conveniently, say hanging on the wall. The Zapkut ZM range is also suitable for cutting signmaking materials, but will handle small quantities of MDF or chipboard.

The Koolkut brand is for those needing a heavier duty machine, wherethe KF and KK Koolkut units offer capacities up to 3.1 x 2.1 m, so theseare easily capable of handling the big 3 x 2 m sheets.

Sagetech thus provides a very comprehensive range of sizes andmodels, enabling its customers, whose needs range from intermittentcutting to the higher end users (with some even cutting an average of150 sheets a week) to select the most compact, space-saving solutionappropriate to their business.Sagetech Ltd l Tel 0118 970 1950 l www.verticalpanelsaw.co.uk

Schelling UK exhibits at W16 on Stand C710INVESTING in new technologycan be a minefield. With tech-nology constantly changing, keeping up to date can be diffi-cult which is why the W16 exhi-bition is well worth a visit.

As a one-stop shop for findingall the latest woodworking infor-mation and for keeping up to datewith the latest Schelling develop-ments why not take a seat in thecompany’s hospitality area whileenjoying a tea or coffee.

Schelling UK opened in June1989 and has recently celebrated25 years of successful service tothe UK market.

As Schelling UK looks to the fu-ture, it has moved into larger,1,922 m2 premises in Wetherby. The company’s new location at Os-borne House will allow Schellingto continue to deliver an excellentservice to the industries it covers.

As well as new office space thenew building provides room toshow and demonstrate both newand refurbished machines.

Markus Freuis, Schelling UK Ltdmanaging director, commented:“Service support is one of thebiggest concerns when customerspurchase a machine and with this

in mind Schelling gives specialfocus to our service and spareparts operation.

“Saws occasionally need main-tenance and repair so to keep

them running we have a dedi-cated team of eight Schellingtechnicians who can identify andfix faults in the shortest possibletime.

“Also the parts department, with an extensive inventory ofmaintenance and repair parts, stands ready for the fastest pos-sible response, often within 24hours from the initial telephonecall. The end result is less down-time and hassle, and this meansour saws keep working for longer.”

On the Schelling stand, C710,you will see a working fh4 330/330manual cut-to-size saw with a Bar-baric lifting device and a Votecsshredder.

One of the most popular fea-tures of the Schelling stand has al-ways been the ability to watch livedemonstrations.

And perhaps the greatest ben-efit after seeing these live demon-strations is the confidence you getfrom seeing the machinery per-form as you expect.

Also available on the stand willbe the latest Schelling softwarewhich includes HPO (High Per-formance Optimisation) and XBoB(Remainder Board Administra-tion). Why not come and see howHPO can save you money by im-proving your material yield andhow XBoB, working together withHPO, can utilise all your remainder

boards better, thereby improvingon the board yield even further.

Present on the Schelling standis the new Schelling fh4 330/330which delivers a saw blade projec-tion of 105 mm with a saw bladediameter of 360 mm. Another im-pressive aspect of the fh4 is the in-tegrated sensors, whichautomatically detect the panelsize and book height.

Also the double strip alignersplaced before and after the sawline remain on the material to pro-vide precise angular alignmentwhen cutting.

There are plenty more addi-tional fh4 machine options such asjump scorer, turning device andDUPLUS2 which can enhance thefunction of a saw.

Schelling invites potential cus-tomers to come and discuss theirrequirements directly with thecompany on the stand.

Knights Country Kitchens selects LamontA key look for 2016: the Valore Grey Brown Ontario Walnut & Light Concrete kitchen. Mixingthe industrial trend with the rustic feel, this Valore kitchen will turn heads.

KNIGHTS Country Kitchens, founded forty years ago bymanaging director, MichaelWimpress, has many years’ ex-perience designing bespokekitchens that have exceededcustomers’ expectations timeand time again. All of thekitchens and interior furnitureare handcrafted in Suffolk byhighly skilled craftsmen, andare built using only the finest

materials and traditionalmethods that will stand the testof time.

Shortly after the companymoved into its present premises31 years ago, Michael invested in amatrix table from Lamont, forkitchen frames and door assem-bly. It is only recently that Michaelhas needed to replace the matrixtable, it has functioned so wellover the years.

“It was really good, definitely, ithas made me thousands of doors,”Michael told PW&SS. “It could dowith having its rams refurbished, but otherwise it is still in workingcondition.”

Michael contacted Alan Lamontto discuss the way forward, shouldthe existing machine be refur-bished, or would it be more worth-while to purchase a new table inorder to double capacity? “Alan is astraight sort of guy and it is nice towork with him. He was willing todo the refurbishment, but it wasmore worth our while to doublecapacity with a new machine.

“What I liked about it is, I proba-bly hadn’t spoken to Alan for 20plus years but he was still thesame: he explained what I wantedto know, we reminisced a bit andhe said he would drop in. He camealong, had a look, and sent somedrawings, which arrived promptly.Once it all came through, I said Iwould book it: and it was ready inthe three weeks that he said itwould be. The whole experiencewas as good as it had been thirtyyears ago. The after-service was re-ally good too.

“We are bespoke kitchen man-

ufacturers, and Alan is a bespokecramp manufacturer. He listens towhat you say and designs a matrixtable to match. We know the spe-cific dimensions of our ranges, where we want the controls, etc.Alan will say if something is or isnot possible, or if there is a betterway of working, but in essenceAlan will design a table exactly asyou want him to. We would giveAlan ten out of ten!

“I would definitely recommendhim, maybe not to our competi-tors, but what he made up for us isdefinitely beneficial for our pro-duction. We can double up oneverything, which gives us an ad-vantage over others around here.If you have a kitchen with 22doors, you don’t want to find outafter they have been clamped thatfour are out of square. The matrixtable saves a lot of time andmoney.

JANUARY 2017 will see Decora-tive Panels Lamination start tobear the fruits of a significantnew investment with the launchof its new dp-limitless range. Toget an insight into how this in-vestment will benefit the mar-ket, the team responsible forthis initiative were asked tocomment.

Managing director MichaelSawyer recently announced thearrival of a new state-of-the-artlaminator — the seventh to be in-stalled at Decorative Panels’ im-pressive 140,000 ft manufacturingfacility based in Elland, West York-shire. The new investment will en-able dp-lamination to significantlyincrease the number of board ma-terials and designs offered intonot only the furniture industry butimportantly the architect andspecifier markets.

Michael said “… this is a naturalprogression for us, in that along-side our current portfolio of dp-decor and dp-specialist products,we can now offer a whole differentpackage of materials. The lamina-tor uses different technology toour other Thermo-rolling lines andenables us to laminate a muchwider range of products in muchsmaller quantities — significantlyincreasing our offer into the mar-ket place.”

An incredible amount of re-search has gone into this and PhilDalton, operations director, ex-plains the timeline and the difficul-ties that have been overcome: “…this project has been on the boil forprobably about a year now, but we

wanted to source the best equip-ment available. The laminator itselfis of prime importance but we alsohad to ensure the factory space, racking and handling equipmentwere right. New racking systemsare being installed as we speak andwe have taken delivery of threenew Combilift CB forklifts to caterfor narrow aisle storage allowingthe most efficient use of space. Thelaminator itself is being installedduring September and this willmean that we can start to sampleand test products in the monthsrunning up to Christmas, with a fulllaunch of the dp-limitless brand inJanuary 2017.”

Design director, Julian Tathamhas spent much of the past yearinvestigating new products andsupply partners to enable Decora-tive Panels to offer an unrivalled, diverse portfolio of materials. Ju-lian commented, “… obviously wewanted to offer as much as wepossibly could and starting in Jan-uary, the dp-limitless stock rangewill comprise the following: an ex-tension to our Senoplast Acrylicoffer — bringing the number ofdesigns available to 42. This willalso include the addition of an in-credible 2 mm thick gloss Seno-plast Acrylic. Other productsavailable will be high pressure

laminates from both ABET andEgger, faux leather products, realstone veneers, technical surfaces, real wood veneers, metal and ofcourse anything else that we areable to source to fulfil specificneeds.”

The laminator will utilise a highbond strength PUR glue linewhich will ensure a superb overallfinish on sheet sizes up to 3,660 x1,430 mm (although 2,440 mm x1,2220 mm and 3,050 mm x 1,220mm will make up the majority ofthe offer).

Stephen Cadwell, sales director, added: “… this is a really excitingtime for us and in essence meansthat we should be able to offermore or less any existing bond-able sheet material into our cur-rent customer base and networkof distribution partners. Productswill be available from stock underthe new banner of dp-limitlessand we will be flexible enough tobe able to offer in anything fromsingle sheets up to full loads. Thiswill in turn allow customers toboth sample and offer individual, bespoke small runs without anycommitment.

“The fact that it will enable us tooffer new products into areas thatwe have not previously been ableto target is tremendously signifi-cant. We are also working on acomprehensive sample packagethat we are currently putting to-gether and will be available atlaunch in January.”Decorative PanelsTel 01484 658341www.decorativepanels.co.uk

Sigma3 Kitchens achieves zero-glue line finishWELL KNOWN kitchen furnituremanufacturer, Sigma3 Ltd, hasbeen supplying kitchens forover 40 years.

The Welsh company is based inLlantrisant near Cardiff and thechairman and founder, Mr BrianLakin, has been continually ex-panding the network of retailstores.

Over recent years the focus hasbeen placed on expanding the“Masterclass Kitchen” brand whichsupplies to selected independentkitchen retailers nationally.

Recently the company has in-vested over £1.3 million in newmachinery and equipment, as wellas a 10,000 ft warehouse, to meetits increased demands in volumeand dramatically improve its qual-ity of panels.

Managing director Mr GeraldJones says: “The reason to invest innew edgebanding technology, was our desire to achieve an invis-ible edge and a more aestheticallypleasing product. For 12 monthswe deliberated and researchedseven different manufacturers, eventually shortlisting down tothree.

“We ultimately decided on the

company Paul Ott GmbH to sup-ply three Strongedge edge -banding systems, all equippedwith state of the art Translift panelhandling solutions.

All machines produce a ‘zero-glue line finish’ using over 100

different colours and textures.“In making a decision as to the

specific machinery we purchased, consideration was given to the ad-hesive technologies availabletoday, including laser, hot air reac-tivation, traditional EVA and PUR

adhesives. The benefits and flexi-bility of the patented Combimeltglue application system becameobvious. We were impressed bythe build quality and the attentionto detail at the Paul Ott factory, aswell as the support offered

throughout by theirdealer, FEN UK. “

Historically thecompany has beenusing double sidededge-banders withsquaring and sizing ca-pability. Considerationhad to be given, wheneventually moving tosingle sided edge-banding machinery.

However, after con-siderable testing of thePaul Ott machinesequipped with the‘Trans-start’ panel in-feed, the company’s ini-tial concerns werecompletely alleviated.

All three Strong-edge machines havethe LCM cleaning sys-tems fitted, ensuringall panels leave themachine fully finishedwithout the need forany manual cleaningintervention afteredgebanding.

The machines are able to pro-duce panels with solid woodedges applied up to 20 mm inthickness and coil materials rightdown to 0.3 mm. Feeding speed is20 m/min including corner round-ing passes. The machines are fullyautomatic in operation, each oneis equipped with eight fully auto-mated tape magazines. The‘Translift’ panel handling systemfitted to each machine is a panelreturn solution that works 100% of

the time for 100% of all panelsizes.

Mr Gerald Jones goes on to say:“Our decision to move to singlesided edgebanding was driven bythe company’s need to produce agreater variety of product in lowerbatch sizes. To combat the loss ofoutput by replacing a double sidededgebander with a single sidededgebander, we decided to add tothe machines the ‘Translift’ panelreturn system. The result of the

measures is that we have im-proved quality, panel aestheticsand have a much greater flexibility.

“We specified all of the newedgebanding machines with a verysimilar specification and capability.Hence, Sigma3 Ltd now has onesupplier and a service arrangementalso with one supplier.

“As the company was changingall of its edgebanders, the speedand efficiency of the installationwas critical.

“All three machines were in-

stalled by FEN UK over a six weekperiod and at all times the com-pany retained at least two fully op-erating machines. The installationwent perfectly to plan for each ofthe three machines.”

Norbord’s OSB campaign helps JT Atkinson boost salesNORBORD’S SterlingOSB promotional campaign has delivered im-pressive results for North of England builders’ merchant, JT Atkin-son.

The family-owned company, which has 24 branches across Tynesideand Cumbria, has been running the campaign since late March and hasseen sales of SterlingOSB increase significantly over the past couple ofmonths.

“Norbord provided us with a promotional package including posters,point-of-sale information and giveaways. In addition and key for us, theirreps came in and did some in-store training for our salesstaff,” says the company’s timber development manager,Jonny Atkinson.

“The training was all very informal and relaxed; it gaveour people the knowledge to talk to customers aboutthe product with confidence.”

In particular, JT Atkinson’s staff have been able to talkto customers about the advantages of using SterlingOSBin place of more traditional products, in particular soft-wood ply. Customers have responded very positively tothe campaign, says Jonny: “The idea of swapping ply-wood for OSB has been planted amongst the pro-plycustomers and we also have traditional OSB users.”

JT Atkinson’s customer base includes several timber-framers and modular house-builders for whom Sterlin-gOSB has much to offer. “Our customers use it for all sorts

of weird and wonderful things and are curious to learn more about its ver-satility,” says Jonny.

The proof of the pudding is, of course, in the eating and Jonny says that hehas noticed a significant increase in SterlingOSB sales since launching thecampaign. “Our branch network has grown over the past 12 months, so thefigures are hard to pin down, but looking at our sales figures there has defi-nitely been an increase. Olimpic K 560 available from SCMVERSATILE and with good performance, Olimpic K 560 is designed for all companies that require continuous and high quality production ofa large number of panels even though they are all different from one to the next, and is now enriched with many solutions that guarantee al-ways the best machining on any panel type. Now available also for this mode is the SGP glue pot, the AirFusion technology and the pre-melt-ing unit for EVA glue, ensuring that “freshly” melted glue is always available inside the glue pot, for the best gluing of the edge to the panel.

Perfect results on all surfaces are also obtained, thanks to the controlled axes allowing all intermediate positioning of the trimming and ege scrap-ing groups: this ensures an optimal edge banding even in the case of surfaces with different degrees of roughness, or panels covered with protectivefilm. Controlled axes are also available for the upper presser, the infeed fence, the rounding group and the pressure rollers.

With AirFusion an excellent finish quality can be achieved. This technology allows edge-banding without the use of glue and makes invisible the junction line between edge andpanel in an incrediply simple manner and with low investment.

The AirFusion technology is compatible and can be perfectly integrated with traditionalgluing technologies to allow maximum diversification of production in a single machine. Itis available on the complete range of SCM Group’s edgebanders, starting from the OlimpicK 560 range, with application speed up to 25 m/min.SCM Group l Tel 0115 977 0044Email [email protected] l www.scmgroup-uk.com

SPANNING 155 metres long, 26metres wide and 28 metreshigh, a life-size Noah’s Arkreplica has been built in Ken-tucky, USA. Colorado Timber-frame was uniquely able tocreate the complex timberframe for the project due to itsrecently upgraded specialisedsawmilling and CNC equipment.

The mammoth Ark Encounterproject is being recognised as theworld’s largest freestanding tim-ber frame structure, with a total of7,300 cubic metres of timber usedin its construction. A football fieldand a half long, the volume of theBiblically scaled Ark is the equiva-lent of 500 standard semi-trucktrailers, and features three levels ofexhibits, with a 1,600-seat restau-rant being prepped on the topdeck. The Ark’s maximum capacityis 10,000 people, however organ-isers plan to limit it to 3,000 insideat any one time.

The $100 million project tookjust over one year and a half tobuild with the timber frame con-struction designed and suppliedby Colorado Timberframe inLafayette, Colorado. Just over2,800 cubic metres of square tim-bers were required for the timberframe itself. “For our massive proj-ect, we needed a special partner,”said Mark Looy of the Ark En-counter. “Colorado Timberframewas the only company that had aCNC machine large enough tohandle our design specs for ourtimbers. And it was a large enoughcompany to handle our volume.”

To meet the construction dead-lines, Colorado Timberframe hiredadditional help, and transitionedto a three-shift work schedule forsix days a week for an entire year. A

number of 25 employees workedin the workshop just outside ofDenver while 10 more were onsiteto install the timber frame projectin Kentucky, along with 75 Amishcraftsmen employed by the mainconstruction contractor.

“We had the capability of doingthis entire project, as we have re-cently upgraded our equipment,”said Keenan Tompkins, owner ofColorado Timberframe. “We werethe only company that can do thesizes of the timbers that they had,and actually fabricate all the tim-bers on the machines.” In additionto more staff, Mr Tompkins saidthat several machines were vital tofulfilling the unique orders andmeeting the tight constructiondeadlines.

An extended personal sawmillmanufactured by Indiana-basedWood-Mizer Sawmills was used toresize rough-sawn 610 mm x 610mm beams of up to 12 m long tothe exact dimensions required for

the complex structure. The LT15model sawmill used for the projectis among the smallest bandsawsWood-Mizer offers — the standardmodel fitting neatly into the bedof a pickup truck. “50% of the tim-ber had to be resized,” Mr Tomp-kins says. “So that’s where wereally worked the Wood-Mizer fora year. We had one full-time guyresizing timbers for the Arkproject.

“Then the timber went throughthe K21 Hundegger CNC machine,”said Mr Tompkins. “We have a fourfoot wide track [1.2 m], and it cando four foot wide [1.2 m] and up to20 inches tall [500 mm], and 60feet long [18 m]. It does all themortise and tenon joints, as wellas drillings and slot cuts, and anykind of recesses or notches thatthe timbers need to accommo-date either the wood connections

or the steel plates.” The German-based Hundegger company sup-plies a wide range of industrialwoodworking equipment.

One of the most impressive tim-ber aspects of the ark are the 15 mtall logs that line the centre, manyof which are 1 m in diameter at thebase. 30% of these logs are re-claimed Engelmann spruce thathad been killed by invasivebeetles, and were standing dead.“We tried to use as much re-claimed timber as possible,” saidMr Tompkins. “We made a deliber-ate and concentrated effort to in-corporate as many as thosereclaimed logs as possible.

“Wood is such a versatile prod-uct,” said Mr Tompkins. “If you lookback through history, there areplenty of examples of extremelylarge structures, some of whichare even still standing today. So itis kind of going back to incorpo-rating and using that, but apply-ing it in a modern context andhaving it meet the modern engi-neering standards that we havetoday.”

The Ark Encounter was openedto the public on 7 July 2016 inWilliamstown, Kentucky. Morethan one million people are esti-mated to visit during the first year, and additional Biblically themedattractions are already in develop-ment for the future.Wood-Mizerwww.woodmizer.com

SOFTWARE FOR DESIGN & MANUFACTURE

SINCE EARLY MAY, Germankitchen manufacturer, HummelKüchenwerk, has been control-ling its entire kitchen produc-tion with the 2020 Insightsoftware solution. From graphi-cal quote generation to installa-tion planning with sub-contractors, all processes aremapped and processed in 2020Insight.

“We opted for 2020 Insight,”says managing director, MatthiasFlick, “because it is the only pro -duct on the market, as far as weknow, that provides continuity inproduction control.” The graphicalquote generation facilitates theplanning of all types of kitchenswhich is an important factor forthe North German market leaderin the B2B sector as they supplymany developers and home build-ing organisations with their prod-ucts. “In addition to a wide rangeof variants we also repeatedly re-ceive special or bespoke requests,”Mr Flick continues.

This high variability must alsobe taken into account in the sec-ondary processes. Sven Heinrich, head of projects at Hummel ex-plains: “Due to the large numberof variants we offer customers, oursoftware requirements were veryhigh. 2020 Insight gave us the op-tion to develop and implement vi-sual workflows which enabled usto respond to all requirements. The flexibility of the solution andthe tools provided allowed us toadapt the system so that it fullymeets our needs.”

With the continuous supportand advice from two 2020 em-ployees throughout the wholeproject, the first complete kitchenwas produced in February as a testrun. Correction requests and im-provement ideas were developedand implemented as soon as pos-sible in the software solution.“That way we could ensure asmooth transition from the old tothe new control system,” says SvenHeinrich.

Project colleague, ThorstenSchmidt adds: “It was also impor-tant to us that all transitions be-tween the different departmentswere clearly defined and that nounnecessary disruptions occurred.Regardless of whether it is theplanning, the machine connectionfor cutting, edging and frontdrilling, capacity or requirementplanning, accounting or installa-

tion planning; all areas interactwith each other and ensure effec-tive and efficient manufacturingprocesses.”

Matthias Flick concludes, “Wecan even integrate our projectplanning for individual B2B sec-tors, so that we now have an ‘all-insystem’ and do not have to coordi-nate and control multiple stand-alone solutions. All statuses arenow available at the push of a but-ton, which has significantly in-creased transparency and enabledus to be more efficient duringproduction.”2020Tel 01233 6497002020spaces.com/2020insight

TOM RENSHAW, owner of GrobyJoinery has been involved injoinery since 1992. Starting ini-tially as a furniture designer andmanufacturer he says it was anatural progression into joinerydue to the market being floodedwith mass produced flat packedfurniture.

He now produces doors, win-dows, stairs and sliding sash fromhis workshop in Leicester. He sayshe is content to remain a one manband as employing staff can bringits own headaches, which he hasexperienced before. What is criti-cal though he says is being able tocompete with much larger com-panies and he therefore has in-vested in software for quoting andmanufacturing timber joinerywhich makes him appear as pro-fessional as the big boys!

Tom describes JMS as the lastpiece of the puzzle, figuratively, the last machine he purchasedwhen setting up his workshop. Headmits that he wishes he hadbought it three or four years ear-lier as it has given him the confi-dence to expand into largerpremises. He explains, “I was ableto look at JMS as another memberof staff. It has helped me to de-velop my business and as a result Ican now quote quicker and orderglass and fittings early, before Istart to machine. This means thateverything is sitting there readyfor me when I need it. I don’t needto put the job down and wait formaterials to arrive.”

Joinerysoft’s Joinery Manage-ment Software was installed atGroby Joinery twelve months agoand as a result Tom says, “I nowspend 80% less time quoting join-ery and more time in the work-shop producing it.” He adds, “I’vebeen impressed with the speed Ican generate a quote, even quite

big, complicated ones. This meansI can now offer an improved serv-ice to my customers by providingprices for three different timberspecies. It makes me look like I’mgoing the extra mile and cus-tomers do not need to know ittakes me ten seconds to changethe timber type!”

Groby Joinery’s private andtrade customers seem to like theJMS generated professionalquotes. They can tell exactly whatthe window will look like from thetrue scale pictures includingwhere the openings are, thecolour, fittings and glass used. Thisis borne out by the increase in jobs

won, despite not always being thecheapest.

Tom says, “I can justify my costsand ask customers if they are mak-ing a like for like comparison withother joinery companies. I also be-lieve it gives me a competitiveedge being able to put on myquotes that I CE mark my joinery.”

The u-value calculator and CEmarking capabilities of JMS allowTom to quote for new build jobswhich would be unavailable tohim otherwise. He says, “I canshow customers the u-value cer-tificates and CE labels and it defi-nitely wins work.” Tom explains,“Customers can scan the QR codeon the CE label from an app ontheir mobile phones. This displaysthe Declaration of PerformanceCertificate specific to their joinery.”He adds, “I’ve been put on the ap-proved supplier register of a largebuilders’ merchant as a direct re-sult of being able to CE mark.”

An added bonus is that in thebackground JMS does all the draw-ings, cutting lists, timber, fitting orglass orders, invoices, deliverynotes, even CE marking! Tom con-firms JMS makes life so much eas-ier saying “If I need to outsourceany work I can print off all the in-

formation required for the job andit is easy for anyone to follow.”

Full support provided byJoinerysoft for its JMS software in-cludes two days’ training and tele-phone support afterwards. Tomsays, “The time served joiners atJoinerysoft are knowledgeable forboth training and support and arevery friendly if I need to ask forhelp. They always call me backwhen they say they will and as aresult I have found JMS easy tolearn.”

Tom concludes, “JMS hasstreamlined my business andmade me more organised. Work isnow completed quicker and moreefficiently which has improvedprofitability. I now spend less timein the office but still manage toprovide a quicker, more profes-sional response to customers.” Headds with a smile, “I would recom-mend Joinerysoft, but not if youlive near me!”Groby JoineryTel 0116 236 [email protected] LtdTel 01608 [email protected]

SOFTWARE FOR DESIGN & MANUFACTURE

CABINET VISION engineers haveset up a customised program tomanage an innovative manufac-turing process for waterproofand bacteria-proof cabinetsproduced out of a specially de-veloped unique material.

The idea for the revolutionarySealwise WCB (Waterproof Con-struction Material) came to its cre-ator Paul Huggins when he was inhospital. “On the trip to a wetroomfor my first shower after being un-able to walk, I discovered therewas nowhere to put my clotheswhile I had a shower. Also, monthsafter leaving hospital I watched TVfootage of the floods in Worces-tershire and saw dozens of ruinedkitchens being thrown away. It allspurred me on to investigatewhether material was availableanywhere in the world for water-proof carpentry. And there wasn’t.”

He was shocked to learn thataround 400,000 tonnes of woodparticle board were being throwninto UK landfill sites every year.“That’s actually around 560 timeshigher than the London Shardbuilding — and as a single foot-print of 8 x 4 sheet would reachbeyond mobile phone satellites inorbit.”

He worked closely with a Ger-man company, Simona, to de-velop a waterproof constructionsheet material, which could beused for cabinetry that was alsofire retardant and had anti-bacter-ial properties. At that time he wasthe managing director of WoodWise Training Ltd, a companywhich he later developed to bethe number one choice for manu-facturing Sealwise products. Todayhe runs both companies, withWood Wise being based in Somer-set; alongside a regional office ofSealwise. In addition, Sealwise hasits head office in Belfast. WhilstWood Wise is classed as the centreof expertise for working with Seal-wise WCB, Sealwise also works

with a number of manufacturersand distributors in the UK, alongwith selling into around a dozenexport markets.

Co-extruded from recycled ma-terial, Sealwise is a single homo-geneous sheet material which ismade out of three parts, includinga recycled uPVC core and PVC sur-face. The three layers come to-gether in a wet state, which meansthey then chemically bond to-gether preventing any chance offurther delamination.

Furthermore, at the end of theproduct’s lifecycle it can be furtherrecycled into material for injectionmoulding.

Having used Cabinet Vision andits Screen-To-Machine modulefrom Vero Software to design andmanufacture the full range ofWood Wise products for aroundten years, he says the software

needed a slight modification to beas equally effective with Sealwise.

“We work with Sealwise sheetsof 8 x 4 and 10 x 5, but instead ofusing cam and dowels on separatesides, top and base, we make cab-inets predominantly out of onecontinuous piece. The two endsare cut to 45°, and V grooves arerouted to fold it. We will roll thecabinet over four times, and itclicks together at the end with afinal Ovvo joint, all from the onepiece of Sealwise. When it clickstogether it creates enough pres-sure so that when W14 solvent isapplied for the capillary action towork, it seals all the internal jointscompletely.”

He says that because the tradi-tional Cabinet Vision software is

parts led … creating individualparts and then applying joints …Cabinet Vision engineers devel-oped special programs to ignoreparts, and create one completecabinet carcase, with the groovesto allow the folding.

Wood Wise invested in a newBusellato CNC router from RW Ma-chines, and with the assistance ofthe engineers added some addi-tional aggregates for the specialgrooving and Ovvo joint work.“This final joint is written into theprogram and sent to the machineby Screen-To-Machine, ensuringthe clip is always used in exactlythe right place.”

Charlie Huggins, who runs theWood Wise production operation, says that despite its unique char-

Cabinet Vision adapted for revolutionary new material

acteristics Sealwise is machined inexactly the same way as MDF andchipboard, and, as well as thepatented groove and fold system,it can also be cam and dowelled, screwed and glued. This meansthat everything the company hasever made in wood and boardwith Cabinet Vision, can also bereplicated in Sealwise.

“Sealwise costs slightly morethan MFC and similar to that ofHDF board, so is a quality product, but is getting widely known asbeing the best at what it does in itssectors.” It has been used to re-place a large number of kitchensin flood areas throughout the UK,including around 45 in Cumbria. As well as being installed inaround 50 NHS hospitals in the UK,Sealwise is being used in the newhospital programme in Kuwait, and the company is handling en-quiries from 90 hospitals in China.

A new shadow board, for Hill-brush, is currently being made forthe food industry, and they haverecently manufactured a range ofkennels for catteries for Technic, which were previously made fromstainless steel. After designing thekennels, Cabinet Vision’s nestersimply looks at a 10 x 5 Sealwisesheet, cuts it out to the correct

sizes which then have the groovescut in, and the machine operatorssimply take it off the bed, fold it,add the back panel and click thefinal joint into place, before it issealed. They also supplied all thekitchens in the Battersea Dogs’Home refurbishment in 2015.

In addition to being waterproofand fire retardant with a B1 fire rat-ing, Sealwise inhibits bacteria’s re-productive system meaning MRSAand e-coli bacteria, for example, die out extremely quickly. Otherbenefits: its screw retention is 2.5times higher than MDF — in testsconducted by Exeter Universitynearly five tonnes of pressure wasrequired to pull out an M8 screw;and tolerances go down to 0.8 ofa mm, matching those of MDF andchipboard. Sealwise has beentested against some othercheaper imports for safe ingredi-ents and where the lead contentof the imports was far over theregulatory levels, Sealwise’s leadcontent was so low that testersstruggled to even measure it.

And because of its anti-bacter-ial and fire retardant USPs, PaulHuggins has built in a special safe-guard to instantly show architects, builders and auditors that theyhave the patented product and

not an unauthorised copy. “Theyhave an additive called Verimasterwhich means if their laser pen isrun over Sealwise, it lights up cer-tain molecules, rather like whenshops scan £10 notes.” This is be-lieved to be an industry first andreassures all those who specifySealwise that they get Sealwise.

He says before they had theBusellato to manufacture the Seal-wise products , they would designtheir MDF and chipboard cabinetsin Cabinet Vision and send theprograms to their machine using

Screen-To-Machine. “Now, all that’schanged regarding the process forSealwise is that when we’ve de-signed the cabinets we apply thespecial over-ride for Cabinet Visionto ignore the separate parts, andcreate the NC code for cutting thesides, top and base as one piece ofmaterial, and routing the Vgrooves for folding it together.”Sealwisewww.sealwise.co.ukCabinet VisionTel 0118 922 6644www.cabinetvision.com

A SHOPFITTING company hasdoubled the output on its CNCrouter, driven by Alphacam, inthe past two years.

The Wensley Group provides abespoke design, manufacturingand installation service to the retail, leisure, education and healthcaresectors, manufacturing shop coun-ters, pub bars and back fittings, staircases, doors and windows.

While Alphacam CAD/CAM soft-ware plays a part in the design andproduction process for around 95per cent of the jobs, CNC program-mer Mark Greening says it reallycomes into its own on five-axis stair-case work. “Even straightforwardstaircases can be quite complex onthe CNC machine, but the biggerand more complex-shaped oneswith features such as curves, tan-gents and scrolls, would be almostimpossible without Alphacam.

“If the shop floor were to makeeven a simple, straight flight ofstairs manually, it would take be-tween three and four days. UsingAlphacam I can do it in half a day.”

When he joined the West Mid-lands company around two yearsago, neither the Alphacam Ulti-mate nor the five-axis 36-toolReichenbacher CNC router whichit drives, were being deployed ef-fectively. “I invested in developinghow we used the machine andgetting the tooling right. We’re stillimproving on that, but Alphacamgives us the confidence to try any-thing on it.”

Five-axis work is becoming in-creasingly important, and he saysthe complexity of the shapes and

curved handrails that he produceswith Alphacam has surprised anumber of people at the company.“Some of the designs we’re askedto work with are virtually impossi-ble to make any other way.

“Everything I do goes throughAlphacam, starting with designingthe products, through to themcoming off the router.” He utilisesmany of Alphacam’s extensive CADfeatures, from a very basic aspect ofdrawing a line, to creating a sur-face. “When I’ve finished the designI move on to programming withthe CAM operation. We work witha selection of tools, and becauseeverything’s done onscreen I can

run a simulation to see what worksand what doesn’t, before we cometo the machining stage. Alphacamshows us if the product we want tocut is fully machineable.

“We can receive the work as acopy of a drawing which I then re-draw in Alphacam, or the client maysend a full architectural drawingwhere I simply break it down intothe components and program themin Alphacam, or I may be asked todraw something entirely fromscratch based on the client’s idea.”

Even after the program hasbeen sent to the machine theremay be occasions when it needsto be amended. “All we do isswitch the toolpaths off andchange the lines where necessarywithout having to redraw or re-program it.”

He says many of the staircaseshave handrails that are twisted aswell as curved, which are readilyproduced in Alphacam using poly-lines, splines and surfaces. “A lot ofthem need to be drawn almostfreehand to produce what’sneeded for the machining, and itwould be quite difficult to dousing a solid model package.”

Retail contracts often call for acomplete shopfitting service in-volving counters, point-of-salestands and window displays …and with pub refurbishments re-quiring bars and the full back-fit-ting, Wensley Group use a widerange of materials, including ply,MDF, hardwoods, softwoods, Tri-coya panels and Corian. Mark

Greening prefers to go on-site topersonally measure up, ensuringhis Alphacam drawings are accu-rate first time.

“If I’m giving a full architecturaldrawing instead, I’ll break it down into all its component parts — tops, fronts, sides — right down to theskirtings, so every component goeson to the Alphacam drawing, readyfor programming with the toolpaths.”

As the work is almost entirely be-spoke he is constantly called uponto produce different jobs, all withdifferent components, so he sayseach job has its own unique chal-lenge. “But being able to draw it inAlphacam and get everything righton screen first is absolutely invalu-able. The software is now an inte-gral part of our production process.”

Always using the most up-to-date Alphacam release keeps themat the forefront of CAD/CAM tech-nology, which he says is vital to getthe best out of the Reichenbacherrouter. And on the rare occasionthey need guidance on an issuethe Alphacam support team are al-ways quick to resolve it. “One pieceof five-axis code wouldn’t work onthe machine, so I sent the programto Alphacam through their sup-port portal and they altered ourpost processor. We were back upand running with a perfect pro-gram just a few hours later.”Wensley Contractswww.wensleygroup.co.ukAlphacamTel 0118 922 6677www.alphacam.com

WOOD WASTE TECHNOLOGY,one of the leading UK manu-facturers in waste to energy sys-tems, based in Stafford, is spon-soring a charity challenge thatinvolves not only climbing thethree highest mountains in theUK, but also a 500 mile cycle ridebetween each of the three des-tinations, starting in Scotland, via the Lake District to finish inWales.

Kurt Cockroft, managing direc-tor of Wood Waste Technology, heard about the fundraising at-tempt and immediately offered tobecome a corporate sponsor of therace, providing financial support aswell as providing the team’s sportskit and assisting with marketingthe event to help the team raise asmuch money as possible.

Kurt heard the story of Joe Elle-ment, a Stafford boy who surviveda horse kick that caused horrific in-juries to the top of his skull whenhe was only young. Now aged 22,Joe realises how very lucky he hasbeen to have not suffered any on-going brain injuries, despite beingcritically ill at the time and need-ing titanium plates to keep hishead together.

As a result, Joe is on a mission toraise £10,000 for Headway (SouthStaffordshire), a local charity thathelps to promote understanding ofall aspects of the devastating ef-fects of brain injury, and provide in-formation, support and services tosurvivors, their families and carers.

Joe and his family have beenrunning a series of charity eventsthroughout 2016 leading up totheir ultimate event in September,

the ‘3Peaks2Wheels’ challenge. Theteam started training last October,as they estimate that in addition tothe three days it will take them toclimb Ben Nevis, Scarfell and Snow-don, they will need to cycle in ex-cess of 100 miles a day over fourdays, in order to give them enoughrest time before getting back in thesaddle the next morning.

Joe says: “I was so lucky to sur-vive an accident like that withoutany side effects. I am so gratefulfor everyone who is joining or sup-porting us on this challenge, in-cluding Wood Waste Technology. It is a big commitment, with all thetraining and planning. It is defi-nitely taking over all our lives, butit will be so worth it to raise£10,000 for such an importantcharity.”

Joe’s dad, Lyndon, is joining hisson on the challenge, and there isalso a three-man support crew in-volved in the event, including Joe’smum who will be responsible forsetting up refreshment and foodstations every 25 miles.

Kurt Cockroft says: “I have heardthat apparently there are an esti-mated one million people in theUK living with the long-term ef-fects of a brain injury, who are hav-ing to deal with such life-changingsituations whilst trying to rebuildtheir lives around the illness. Joe isvery lucky to have survived such ahorrendous accident, and we areproud to be helping him raisemoney for Headway, to help thoseless fortunate.”Wood Waste TechnologyTel 01785 250400www.woodwastetechnology.co.uk

KEEPING PACE with the record results of 2015 could appear no easy task for the BiesseGroup: nevertheless, the Consolidated Report for the First Half demonstrates with factsand figures that the Group is continuing to surpass itself also in the first half of 2016.

“We must underline the extraordinary ability of the Biesse Group to produce organic salesgrowth, ie €283.4 M (+15.4% in the first half of 2016 compared to the previous year with anoutstanding +24.9% in the second quarter), albeit in the presence of numerous political andeconomic challenges at the global level. We achieved a 16.1% increase in order intake andrecorded a record high order backlog: over €178 M in value for growth of almost 28%, all cor-roborated by net cash generation exceeding all expectations, so much so as to virtually can-cel debt at the end of June,” underlines Stefano Porcellini, group general manager.

The secret to this constant growth lies in the Group’s ability to invest in strategic assets, firstand foremost in human capital which is growing hand in hand with the increase in theGroup’s turnover and which now exceeds 3,450 employees, excluding temporary staff.

Then innovation, in terms of both the level of technology in the Group’s products, as wellas its ability to expand and complete its range and experience, are winning factors in the

Biesse Group’s vision. It is no co-incidence in fact that it is preciselythe 4.0 solutions, relating to the so-called Smart Factory, which haverecorded significant increases, thanks to the Biesse Group’s ability to apply them not only to large but also to medium-sizedinstallations. Through the recent acquisition (May 2016) of the Vicenza company Uniteam, theGroup has opened the door to new synergies and opportunities, penetrating a strategic“niche” sector such as that of wood carpentry (structural beams and façades) and expandingits presence in the plastics and advanced composite materials processing segment.

The figure is believed to see Biesse as the first Italian Group in the field of wood, glass andmarble processing machines and the second player in the world in terms of revenue, but withgrowth rates well above the German competition, is further consolidated. Leadership whichis also confirmed overseas; in Melbourne, in fact, during the Awisa Fair in July, the Group re-

Vollmer tools up for productivity with new VgrindWHEN the Vollmer Vgrind was launched, the new concept in rotary tool grinding completely changed the industry. Now, Vollmer has takenits new concept a step further with its latest Vgrind 160, a model that provides more flexibility and capability than its predecessor.

The new Vgrind 160 received its world premiere at the Grindtec exhibition in March and was flown fresh from its global premiere to MACH 2016where one customer instantly recognised the advancements of the new model, and placedan order at the show.

Compared to the previous version, the new Vgrind 160 can process tools up to 50 mmdiameter, more than double the 20 mm maximum diameter of its predecessor. This ex-panded capacity also extends to the grinding length of the tools. The new Vgrind can ac-commodate a tool length capacity up to 265 mm with a grinding length of 200 mm, morethan 40 mm beyond the previous machine.

Another key benefit of the new Vgrind 160 is the improved automation system. Whereasthe previous Vgrind machine had the capacity for two pallets, the new configuration offersthe option of Vollmer’s HP160 pallet magazine for up to 272 tools. Alternatively, customerscan opt for the Vollmer HPR250 system with a Fanuc robot that can more than triple ca-pacity whilst providing the facility to automatically load different diameter tools. This im-pressive automation system will also change the collets in the machine for the automaticunmanned processing of multiple diameter tools.

This flexibility also extends to the work envelope with the new Vgrind having an optionalupgraded eight wheel tool-changer system. This enhancement ensures grinding wheelsare changed on both of the vertically configured spindles in the shortest possible time. Thecoinciding spindles have also received an upgrade with customers having the option ofmore powerful motorised grinding spindles. By choosing this option, customers can con-duct high material removal rates.

Another new option is to replace one of the spindles with a high frequency spindle forpocket grinding the tool flutes ready to accept a PCD tip.

The performance of the Vgrind is also beyond comparison, as the five-axis machine withits vertically configured spindle arrangement delivers unbeatable precision, productivityand rigidity. This is credit to the spindles working close to the optimum C-axis pivot point. This feature also reduces the travel of the linear axes, further reducing production times.Vollmer UK Ltd l Tel 0115 949 1040Email [email protected] l www.vollmer-group.com

HULL BASED Pro-Cut ToolingLtd manufactures and services awide range of woodworkingcutting tools, including sawblades, diamond tools, routercutters, tungsten carbide (TCT)and high speed steel (HSS) cut-ters, and drills.

The employment of skilledcraftsmen and the use of the bestavailable precision manufacturingtechnologies enables Pro-Cut toefficiently produce and servicewoodworking cutting tools and topromptly delivery them to all partsof the UK.

For more than 12 years, themainstay of Pro-Cut’s vital grindingfunctions has been its ANCA tooland cutter grinders. Given thecompany’s increasing workloadand mindful of the technicalprogress made in the field of tooland cutter grinders over the pastdecade, a decision was made to ‘re-tire’ the oldest of Pro-Cut’s ANCAmachines and search for a modern,state-of-the-art replacement.

Pro-Cut director, Steve Weymes, explained: “Our company growthand continuing success in the pro-duction, service and supply ofboth standard and bespoke tool-ing is largely a result of our use ofour highly precise and rapid actingANCA tool and cutter grinders. Inaddition to producing high qualitytools, ANCA’s very productive ma-chines enable us to achieve thekind of efficiencies that make ourproducts and services extremelycost-effective in what is a verycompetitive marketplace. For in-stance, as our ANCA WGX grinderis fitted with an automatic loadingsystem, in addition to running itthroughout the day we are able toundertake highly efficient, medium to long production runsin an automatic ‘lights-out’ modethroughout each night.

“Although we have been pro-ducing one-off tools and making

shorter production runs on theoldest of our ANCA grinders formore than a decade, increasingcustomer demand meant that werecently made a decision to re-place this machine with a moreflexible, faster model.

“Even though we have been de-lighted with the performance ofour older ANCA tool and cuttergrinder, when we decided tosource another machine to pro-duce one-offs and carry outsmaller production runs, mindfulof the advancements that havebeen made in the field of tool andcutter grinders, in addition to con-sidering the latest ANCA machine,we also looked at the offeringsfrom other leading manufacturers.Having witnessed demonstrationsof the available alternatives, wecame to the conclusion thatANCA’s flexible new FX5 Linearmachine best suited our needs.

“Now installed and fully opera-tional, the use of our advancednew ANCA tool and cutter grinderhas slashed our machine down-times and reduced set-up timesbetween our small batches. Ouruse of the impressive new ANCAmachine is resulting in excellentlevels of tool accuracy and surfacefinish characteristics, whilst itsspeed and flexibility has given ourproduction a significant boost andprovided the competitive advan-tage that we were looking for.”

The recently launched ANCA FXLinear range consists of three cut-ting-edge, cost effective tool andcutter grinders that are able toperform tasks from light manufac-turing, to regrinding and full pro-duction. Innovative new featuresinclude a touchscreen that is cus-tomisable with Windows and ahandheld pendant for simplifiedset-ups. Despite the FX Linear ma-chines’ larger working envelope, the advanced new grinders oc-cupy a relatively small footprint.

Every part on the new machines, from the positioning of the grind-ing wheel on the C-axis centreline(to reduce thermal influence), tothe ANCA designed linear motors, has been aimed at enhancing ac-curacy, increasing productivityand making operators’ tasks sig-nificantly easier.

The advanced new FX Linearrange uses ANCA LinX Linear mo-tors for axis motion (X & Y axes). Inconjunction with linear scales, ahigh degree of machine precisionand performance is achieved, re-sulting in greater tool accuracyand superior surface finish charac-teristics. The cylindrical LinX LinearMotors experience less wear inuse, as there are no contactingparts and have been designed fora lifetime of operation in harshgrinding environments. Aidinglongevity, LinX Linear motors aresealed to IP67, guarding againstthe ingress of grinding contami-nation and further helping to ex-tend the life of the linear motor.

As the magnetic field is cylindri-cal there is no additional downforce on the rails or machine base.In addition, the high-quality mo-tors are not affected by tempera-ture variations. LinX Linear motorsdeliver higher axis speed andfaster acceleration, while main-taining smoother axis motion, leading to reduced cycle times.

The LinX uses less energy thanan equivalent flat-bed style linearmotor and has the same powerconsumption as a ballscrew sys-tem, whilst delivery higher levelsof efficiency. The design of themotor also naturally isolates anyheating effects from the machine. In addition, the LinX does notneed a separate chiller unit as ituses the machine’s regular coolantsystem, further reducing bothrequired floor space and powerconsumption.

The mid-range FX5 Linear

model (as purchased by Pro-Tool)is ideal for users who need a de-gree of automation and optionssuch as MicroPlus. The FX5 Linearhas a spindle power of 9.5 kW andalso includes an automatic two-wheel changer, providing accessto an increased range of wheelsand tool types.

Together with the optional au-tomatic headstock clamping andthe FastLoad-FX compact loader, the FX5 enables unmanned oper-ation and has the flexibility tohandle small volumes and mixedbatches of tools.

For customers requiring the flex-ibility provided by more spindlepower, or the increased automa-tion capacity that a robot can pro-vide, the FX7 Linear is a perfectmachine. The FX7 Linear is the pre-mium tool grinder in the FX rangeand represents exceptional valuefor money. It offers a wide range ofoptions for those looking to in-crease productivity and accuracy.

Although each standard FX Lin-ear grinder encompasses a widerange of advanced features, to en-able each individual customer toreceive a machine that matchedtheir exact needs, a wide range ofhardware and software optionsare available.

Automation options includeANCA’s FastLoad, a loading sys-tem believed to be unique that isfully contained within the ma-chine canopy. FastLoad is a low-cost solution for customersseeking automation and is perfectfor low-volume production runs.

For those requiring extendedperiods of unmanned operationand maximum productivity,ANCA’s Robot Loader is a versatileautomation solution that is lo-cated completely within the FXLinear machine.ANCA (UK) LtdTel 024 7644 7000www.anca.com

Revive wooden furnitureWOOD has long been a popularmaterial for furniture due to itsdurability, versatility and strik-ing natural appearance. How-ever, whether it is 10 or 100years old, every day wear andtear can take its toll on wood, deteriorating the furniture’squality and look.

Unknown to many, one of themost effective and common meth-ods of restoring wooden furnitureis simply reviving the surface. Wornwood can be sanded, cleaned andre-finished to present a fresh can-vas with an as-new appearance. For furniture pieces that have abuild-up of wax, unsightly fingerprints or white rings, an abrasiontechnique may be required.

Many good furniture finishesare designed to be thick to preventany impermeable damage frompenetrating the wood. For exam-ple, white rings are a commonwooden stain that has solid thewax, polish or finish, rather thanthe wood itself. An abrasion tech-nique will allow you to ‘wear’ awaythe damage that is on the finish, revealing the undamaged, originalwood underneath. To achieve asmooth, consistent finish, the abra-sion method will need to be ap-

plied on the entire surface of thewood before applying a finish.

Once cleaned, it is important toexamine the wood closely to see ifthere are any scuffs which need tobe repaired. If there are any dents orsmall scrapes, use a wood fillerproduct to even out the damagedwood surface. To finish, it is recom-mended to use a high quality prod-uct that is compatible with yourspecified finish. This will ensure thatonce the wood has been cleaned, sanded and the final finishing treat-ment is applied, the repaired sur-face will be camouflaged againstthe rest of the wood without leav-ing unsightly marks. The naturalfeatures of wood can be enhancedwith a clear protective finish or canbe individualised with colours anddifferent textured finishes.

SPRAY BOOTH and drying sys-tems specialist, Gallito Ltd, hasrecently completed the installa-tion of a new paint spraying fa-cility for leading furnituremanufacturer Ellis Furniture. Atits factory in Huddersfield, WestYorkshire, Ellis Furniture de-signs and manufactures strong, durable and safe furniture tomeet challenging environmentssuch as schools and universities, care homes and hotels, as wellas manufacturing high qualitykitchen and bathroom furniturefor the retail market.

Founded in 1891 by J ThomasEllis, and at the forefront of UK fur-niture making for 125 years, EllisFurniture still remains a privatelyowned family business.

Today, operating from a mod-ern factory with 200,000 ft2 of pro-duction space, the companydesigns and manufactures furni-ture to exacting standards, andutilises a combination of tradi-

tional skills with some of the mostup to date production machineryof its kind. Manufacturing is com-plemented by an extensive finish-ing and assembly facility wherethe company’s latest investmentin technology has been under-taken to fulfil the needs of achanging market requirement.

Ellis Furniture’s engineeringmanager, Paul Dudley, explains:“Our production processes cover awide range of materials includinghigh pressure laminates, MFC, realwood and veneers, as well aspainting and lacquering a varietyof different substrates.

“Since the launch of our ‘1891’painted collection of kitchens andbathrooms, demand for paint-fin-ished products has continued togrow, and the decision was madeto invest in an automatic panelspray painting line to manage thisincreasing demand. lored production and, since thiswould be uneconomic to run onthe automatic paint line, we stillhad a requirement for hand-spray-ing and a traditional spray booth.”

The company previously hadtwo individual spray booths whichhad been sufficient for their needsin the past but, they were not inthe ideal location, and bothbooths were now nearing the endof their serviceable life.

Paul Dudley continues: “Wehave a long history with Dust Con-trol Systems: they have main-tained our extraction systems formany years, and have previouslyinstalled an Ecogate extractionoptimisation system for us, and ahighly-efficient 110,000 m3/hrSchuko filter. We have always beendelighted with their product qual-ity, their engineering know-howand, in particular, their attitude tocustomer service. When we knew

the time had come to invest in anew spray booth, we had no hesi-tation in calling in Gallito (one ofthe DCS group of companies) topresent a design proposal.”

Following a site visit to Ellis Fur-niture, Ian Ward, managing direc-tor of Gallito Ltd, put forward aproposal for a fully contained 50m2 enclosure, housing three sepa-rate 3,000 mm wide dry filter spraybooths; providing a working floorarea of almost 40 m2, a workingheight of 2,960 mm, and a total fil-ter area of over 20 m2. The enclo-sure is manufactured from 1.2 mmthick galvanised folded panels, bolted together and sealed, andproduct entry and exit is providedby centrally located, self-closingdouble hinged doors. A separatepersonnel access door is located atone end, and double doors at theopposite end allow access to anexisting drying room. Clean fil-

tered air is drawn from the factoryby fans located above the enclo-sure, and lighting is provided bytwelve 1,500 mm long twinfluorescent fittings.

Each booth is served by its own710 mm diameter 3 kW axial fan, running at 1,400 rpm and extract-ing up to 3.37 m3/s. 710 mm diam-eter ducting, routed between rooftrusses and out through the roof, allows vertical discharge of filteredair to atmosphere. Inside the en-closure, the spraying area com-prises three standard GallitoDFB300 plenums fitted side byside — two 1,000 mm deep re-movable partitions allow each 3 mwide area to be used independ-ently or, when the partitions areremoved, provide a working widthup to 9 m.

Ian Ward, commenting on theEllis installation, said: “To ensure along, trouble-free working life,

Gallito booths are built to thehighest standards, using premiumgrade materials, and all galvanisedpanels are cut to size on a CNClaser cutter, then folded andformed to give a perfect fit andseal.”

“Gallito’s engineers completedthe installation and commissionedour new spray facility in a oneweek window we had earmarkedfor the work,” says Paul Dudley,“and we are delighted with thequality of the whole structure. Theinstallation now allows us to pro-duce short runs economically, to aquality-controlled standard, andwe also use the booths to produceaccurate sample products forclient approval prior to volumeproduction on the automaticspray line.”Gallito LtdTel 01937 844698www.gallito.co.uk

With a working floor area of 40 m2, the Gallito enclosure provides Ellis Furniture with a clean, safe environment for paint spraying.

DUST EXTRACTION & WOOD WASTE CONTROL

DUSTRACTION has installed anew dust extraction andmanagement system with TouchDesign Group in Devon.

The newly commissioned ex-traction plant has been installed tooperate automatically in tandemwith a new boiler system by long-standing and leading waste-to-energy partner Wood WasteTechnology at the new factory oflong standing dust extraction cus-tomer, Touch Design, in Exeter.

Touch Design Group is wellknown for the architect-inspiredinterior projects it undertakes, many of them in the most exclu-sive territories of London’s WestEnd. Kitchens, bedrooms withdressing rooms, libraries, bars, staircases — whatever the project, skilled craftsmen make each pieceto order using both CNC technol-ogy and traditional bench skills.Their top-end users are unstintingin the production quality de-mands of directors Ed Tremlettand David Crosby, who are simi-larly uncompromising when itcomes to the demands they set fortheir dust extraction and workingenvironment standards.

“When we moved to our Exetersite a year ago, we needed to upgrade our dust extraction system so that it worked seamlesslywith the new boiler that was planned from Wood Waste Technology,” recalls David Crosby. “Wehad used both them and Dustraction before and their working association and standards of en-gineering meant we could be assured of an integrated fit — which was exactly what we neededbecause the funding we had secured was for a complete package. Dustraction is used to work-

ing both with Wood Waste Technologyand also now with us, so it made goodsense to stick with the partnership weknew and were used to.”

Dustraction’s quotation includedupgrading the existing extraction sys-tem and replacing its Dustrax four-sec-tion filter with a new six-section 27RVDustrax filter, to be fed from a new 37kW fan-set together with a secondnew fan-set to enable the waste to bedischarged directly to a waste silo.

The Dustrax 27RV wood-wastefilter has an automatic shake-down of waste from the tubularsock-type filters giving an area ofaround 162 square metres. Wasteis transferred into the end of thehopper section by a floor-mounted fan-set and is dis-charged via a heavy duty rotaryvalve air-seal.

“The whole of the filter plant,”says Steve Matuska, “is mountedon a galvanised steel supportstructure that has been speciallydesigned by us to raise the rotaryvalve high enough so that wastecan be fed directly into the con-

veying system, silo and WWTboiler installation to work in syn-cro and fully automatically.”

An access door has been in-cluded below the rotary valve todischarge waste directly to a con-tainer or bulker bag to bypass theboiler if required and explosion re-lief is in accordance with ATEX re-quirements and has been builtinto the filter by Dustraction.

Operation of the entire plant iscontrolled from a single controlpanel and the finished installationenables Touch Design to complyfully with all COSHH requirements.

“The hopper feeds the boiler

automatically,” says David Crosby;“it really works a treat, and Dus-traction has been fantastic to workwith.

DUST EXTRACTION & WOOD WASTE CONTROL

INNOVATIVE and award-win-ning Glyngary Joinery Ltd isbenefiting from a new biomassheating system supplied byDust Control Systems Ltd (DCS).

Glyngary is renowned for qual-ity bespoke joinery manufacture;especially for its distinctive rangeof sash windows and casementwindows and doors, which aremanufactured in a wide range ofnatural woods. The family-ownedcompany, established in 1985 byColin Yates and now operatedjointly by his sons, Glyn and GaryYates, undertakes all production atthe company’s 19,000 sq ft facilitynear Warrington, Cheshire.

In common with all joinerymanufacturers, Glyngary Joinerycreates a good deal of wood waste.Avoiding the need to dispose ofthis waste and instead use it toheat the business premises madesense in itself, but the DCS pro-posal also explained the financialbenefits of the Renewable Heat In-centive scheme (RHI). This Govern-ment-funded scheme, which waslaunched in 2011 and managed byOFGEM, pays end users for everykW of heat generated for theirbusiness premises. DCS predictedthat the company’s capital expen-diture on a suitable system couldbe recovered in around 5 yearsthrough RHI payments, but theGovernment’s payback period forgenerating heat is continuous for20 years after installation — effec-tively generating additional in-come for up to 15 years.

Commenting on the decision tocommission the new installation,Gary Yates said: “We have had along-standing relationship withDCS; they installed our existing ex-traction system and have taken

care of maintenance and LEV test-ing for many years. We have al-ways been impressed by theirprofessional approach and theproposal DCS put forward for thenew biomass system presentedcompelling economic reasons forgoing ahead with the investment.”

Wood waste from the variousmachines and workstations in the

factory continues to be extractedvia the existing DCS filter unit but, rather than the collected woodchips, dust and shavings endingup in a waste trailer, the material isnow transferred by means of atransport loop to a cyclone whichis situated above a new storagesilo. The waste is discharged pres-sure-free from the cyclone, via arotary valve, and drops into thestorage silo below. The silo itselfincorporates a mechanical agita-tor to ensure a consistent flow ofmixed waste to a screw conveyor, which in turn delivers the woodfuel through to the boiler room.Sight windows, arranged verticallyup the side of the silo, allow easyvisual monitoring of wood wastelevels.

The boiler room houses thenew DCS 300 kW biomass boiler, along with the RHI metering unitswhich provide a real-time readoutof kilowatt hours of heat pro-duced; providing Gary Yates witha constant indicator of the rev-enue being generated. The highefficiency, user-friendly boiler hasautomatic ignition, automaticheat exchange cleaning, and au-tomatic de-ashing — all standardfeatures which help to maximise

efficiency and reduce downtimefor maintenance. To minimiseemissions from the burner, theflue is fitted with a fume scrubberwhich ensures the system per-forms well within local authorityguidelines.

To make most efficient use ofthe hot water generated by thebiomass boiler, DCS installed threeseparate hot water loop systems. One of the three loops exclusivelyserves the spraying-drying roomwhere two heat exchangers, inde-pendently controlled by roomthermostats, maintain a constanteven temperature throughout theworking day. A second separatelymetered loop is routed through aseries of six heat exchangers, strategically sited above the re-mainder of the workshop area. This flexible, efficient use of theboiler ensures both the dryingroom and workshop are alwaysmaintained at optimum workingtemperatures. The third loop, con-nected to an externally-sited heatdissipater, is designed to operatein the unlikely event that any ex-cess heat is generated — thisloops is not metered, so receivesno RHI payback, but the system isfinely tuned to the factory’s re-

quirements and the dissipater israrely used.

To provide Glyngary with thedesired heating levels the boilerconsumes up to four tonnes ofwood waste each week during thecooler months of the year, but inthe summer months this reducesto around one tonne. In winter, thefactory does not produce suffi-cient filtered waste to meet thedemand of the boiler, but all wastewood off-cuts from the factory arecollected and stored for futureuse. DCS supplied a high-through-put Schuko off-cut shredderwhich is used to recycle the storedtimber when it is required forwood fuel. Additionally, Glyngarypurchases around 20 tonnes ofwood chips per year to augmentthe supply of fuel in winter — buteven burning the bought in fuelreturns a profit.

Area sales manager for DCS, RayTownley, adds: “DCS was delightedto be awarded this contract. Thesystem is ideally suited to Glyn-gary’s requirements, and workingwith Gary and his team is always apleasure.”Dust Control Systems LtdTel 0800 040 7116Email [email protected]
