Have you seen the Primary 5 Stream Channel?

It’s where you can find videos and lessons recorded

by your teachers each week to support your

learning. You can access it by signing into Teams

then clicking the link in the General channel-look

for the post titled ‘Troubleshooting’ (see the image

below) and you will find the link there. If you are

having difficulty accessing it, please ask the P5

teachers and we will do our best to help.

Make a Plan

Lots of people find it really helpful to plan out the activities that they are going to do

each week. Making a weekly timetable is a great way of planning your learning and

ensuring you are achieving. Create a timetable for the week ahead and write down the

activiities you are going to have a go at. You can design your own or fill out the blank

timetable included in your packs (see the sheet titled ‘Create your own timetable’).

Don’t forget to include things like excercise, time outdoors, reading and relaxing too!

Literacy and English

• Punctuation and Grammar: Time to work on our proofreading and editing skills! Read through the paragraph

‘Snow Ice Cream’ and see if you can find and correct the 10 mistakes within the

paragraph. The mistakes could be punctuation, grammar or spelling.

• I’m a Celebrity… Spelling challenge!

Take a look at the ‘I’m a Celeb’ spelling challenge PowerPoint that has been

uploaded to teams (the slides are also included in your pack). Choose some

spelling words from your own list or the lists included in this pack to complete the

challenge.

• Reading: Continue reading for enjoyment. You might be reading a book from

home, choosing one of the books available on Epic https://www.getepic.com

(Class Code: ghs0944) or listening to Night Bus Hero on our P5 Stream channel.

• Writing: Assignment Task

Describe what the boy can see on the other

Write at least 5 sentences and try to include

ambitious adjectives.

Extra: Could you expand your paragraph to

create a short story? Remember ‘Story

Mountain’-every good story should have a

beginning/introduction, build up, a

problem/climax, a resolution (how the

problem is solved) and an ending.

Numeracy and Maths

Fabulous Fractions!

This week we will begin our New maths topic. Watch Fractions lesson 1, which has

been uploaded to our P5 Stream. We will continue to work on multiplication and

division in numeracy and the activities below will support you with this.

Lesson 1 helps to explain how to do the fraction questions that are in this booklet.

• Audio Maths: Test your mental maths skills by having a go at the Rainbow Quiz. Cloud Rating 1 is aimed at Primary 5. Each colour level has 10 questions.

• Learn the Grid Method for Multiplication: Watch the ‘Grid Method’ lesson which has been uploaded to our P5 Stream channel.

If you are unable to watch it, the slides from the Powerpoint are in the Maths and

Numeracy Resources section of this pack.

Now see if you can have a go at using it to solve the multiplication problems below: Mild: 15 x 6, 16 x 7, 23 x 4, 27 x 5, 32 x 3

Medium: 26 x 8, 37 x 7, 48 x 8, 52 x 9, 68 x 4

Spicy: 98 x 5, 126 x 3, 113 x 7, 149 x 8, 184 x 6

Now try one of the worksheets in the Maths and Numeracy Resources section to help build

your confidence using the grid method.

Just like the questions above, you can choose from Mild, Medium or Spicy.

• Skyscraper Arrays: Using coloured paper, have a go at creating your own skyscraper array art using times

tables facts of your choice. Choose a times table fact then cut coloured paper into

rectangles (or other shapes if you’re feeling creative!) to create the array for it. The array

will be the windows of your skyscraper. Here are some examples below:

• Maths Worksheets (see Maths and Numeracy Resources section attached below grid) –

‘Monkeys Multiply by 7’, ‘Practise the 8 Times Table’ .

• Strategy: Learn how to play the game Pico, Fermi, Bagel (similar to the board game

Mastermind) and teach it to someone. All you need is paper and a pencil. The game

begins with one person secretly choosing a 3 or 4-digit number with no repeated digits.

Other players attempt to guess the number, and the one who chose the number responds to

each guess as follows:

➢ If the guess has no numbers correct, they respond: "Bagel." B

➢ For each digit the guess has correct, but in the wrong place, they respond: "Pico." P

➢ For each digit the guess has correct and in the correct place, they respond: "Fermi." F

Assignment Task

➢ This will be submitted to an ‘Assignment Folder’ that can only be seen by the

Primary 5 teachers and will not be visible to other children on Teams.

➢ Your response from your teacher will also be private and will only be able to be

viewed by you.

➢ Check the General Channel for instructions on how to submit an assignment or ask

the P5 teachers if you are unsure.

• Old Edinburgh: Watch the accompanying video on the P5 Stream Channel or read

the transcript in your pack.

The streets around Edinburgh in the 1500s were usually named after a business or

trade that went on there, or were named after a person who lived there.

When you walk around the Old Town today, look out for some of these names which

have stuck ever since.

Once you have got the hang of it, see if you

can have a go at this problem:

What is the minimum number of guesses needed

that will allow you to always determine a secret

number:

Where the secret number has one digit?

Where the secret number has two digits?

Where the secret number has three digits?


Here are some of the streets that you can still see in Edinburgh today.

What do you think originally went on in these streets (you might have to do a wee bit

of research for one or two of them)?

Imagine that you were a tradesman living in the Old Town of Edinburgh at this time.

- What job might you have done?

- What might your street have been called?

- What would life have been like for you?

Think carefully about the sights, the sounds and the smells that would be all around

you. See if you can create a piece of writing that describes what your life might

have been like. You can find a planning page in your pack.

You could choose to write it in one of the following ways:

• A diary entry for a particular day.

• A letter to a friend who is thinking of visiting

• A short story about an event that happened

Alternatively, you could draw a picture of a street scene from Old Edinburgh that

sums up what it might have been like.

• Social Studies – Celebrate MLK Day on Monday 18th January

• STEM - Instant Ice Cream :

This week we are creating ice cream......without a freezer!

the 1500s. Create a piece of writing that describes what your life might have

been like.

Use these questions to write down your ideas and help you plan your writing.

What is your job?

How do you feel?
