I am writing to you today to register my objection to the planned Children's Hospital at the StJames

Site in Kilmainham. I do so as a parent of Sophia, a 9 year old who has been using our health Service

since she was 5 days old. Our experiences have been good and bad, the good being the Care and

Attention of our Nurses and Doctors, the bad being the constant lack of planning & investment in

our badly suffering facilities and services. We are writing on behalf of all our sick Children and the

future generations of lrelands sick Children.

In 9 years of travelling to crumlin we have only accessed parking on our first attempt on a few

occasions. We both travel now, pull up outside and unload Sophia in her wheelchair while the the

other parent goes to find parking. We are lucky as we both can manage to attend the hospital on

most occasions. In emergency occasions when Sophia has been admitted to ICU we have received

parking tickets as we could only park on the congested streets around crumlin.

What we see as wrong with the 5t James site is,

ACCESS; 75% of the children attending the hospital come from outside the M50. An extra 20 minutes

in an ambulance or 1 hour in a car could be the difference between life & death. Add the extra stress

of negating badly congested roads on top of a trip from Donegal, Cork or Galway •...

liMITED PARKING; 90% of the Children attending the hospital will attend by car. There will be up to

10,000 visits a day, The recommended parking for a 400 bed hospital would be 2500, there are 1000

planned at StJames, to include staff, patients and visitors ...

liMITED SPACE; the hospital will need to expand over the lifespan of the hospital. Crumlin has

expanded 75% in the last 15 years, Texas children's hospital has been rebuilt twice in 10 years. The st

James site just doesn't have the room to provide the necessary space for the next 25/50 years.

CO LOCATION ....... Only 4 out of 17 children's hospitals are co located with an adult hospital. 10 out

of 17 are co located with a Maternity hospital. newborn babies die every year in transit between

Maternity hospitals.

Massive disruption to already congested roads in the N4, Kilmainham, and city centre traffic during

construction.

In our Governments plans favouring StJames they mention the benefits of the Luas connection to

the Hospital. This is NOT an option when you have a sick child that is vulnerable to infection, has a

lot of equipment and we all know of the well documented problems on the Luas Red line. This

decision has blatantly ignored the very basic needs of Sick Children and their families.

We and other families know what we would like in our new Hospital, Ease of access when travelling

by car with our sick Children, with adequate parking, on a Green field site would make a huge

difference to our daily visits. As this is to be an ALL IRELAND HOSPITAL it is beyond comprehension

that a Site that has congestion Problems at present would even be considered.

A few months ago I started a Face book page to gauge the reaction of families the the Stjames Site.

We have over 5500 followers and the most important factors are the proposed location and parking.

On an Online petition we have over 2000 signatures with comments from families which outline

their reasons for disagreeing with this decision. I have included a printed copy of this to date.

It is very frustrating to have our concerns and needs constantly ignored, 20 years after it was

announced that we needed a New Hospital this Government are making a huge mistake by building

in a limited City centre location. They are basically building a new Hospital with the problems of our

existing services. Hopefully some common sense will prevail and a new Location will be chosen on a

Greenfield site outside the MSO.

two sites Is Blanchardstown. II would be a lot more convenient for distressed

parents to reach and would also have much more car parking. Parents of a

accessible. StJames isn't As 8 mother of 8 child with a life threatening

condition I need to be able to get to a children's hospital quickly & safely.

FighUng to make my way through City traffic Is not the way to go. In an

emergency situation tryjng to get to the StJames site will be a nightmare. For

day to day appointments It will be the same.

The hospital should be away from traffic with plenty of free parking, not in Sl

James's

The traffic around kllmalnham is an absolute joke at the moment 30 mins to

get from the canal down suir road to the n4 at the hilton hotel.

The road networ!( around the hospital is not suitable as it is, never mind adding

In stressed parents who want to get their Ill children to hospital.

The Infrastructure Is not In place to support the hospital as is.

2 ye&IS almost living In crumlin hospital. The staff ... everyone bar none were

amazlng ... the hospital, the journey, the par1<1ng were a nightmare and we

were lucky ... we only had to come from ballinteer. My son had cancer. He was

trapped In a room for months post transplant. No access to outdoors. No view

of anything but a wal. No possibility ol visitors bar his parenes. The many

journeys to theatre and back we couldn't even walk property by his side

because the corridors and lilts were too narrow. years later nothing has

changed and I'm now nearty 4 monlhs Into pretty much daily treks to James 81

all hours of the day and night. I'm In viSiting mode because this time there's no

coming home from hospilal. This time I'm not dmgglng a child who's terminally

iD and at serious risk ol infection due to a non existent immune system with

me. I'm dealing with traffic congestion and parking problems. Huge car par1<

fees. James does not and will never have the capacity to properly care lor sick

children and their families with dlgnlly. This Is politics at its worst and most

shameful. If It goes ahead It wtn be barely finished before It becomes obvious

even 10 the most bllnkered thalli's a fiasco. Please listen. Please please give

our sick children what they deserve which Is nothing but the best from us all. If it's a nightmare for people living In DubMn you can only multiply that by huge

degrees for any travel~ng from outside the city. Public transport Is a mute Issue.
