Mother Adelaida Visits SSAMEvery 5 years, the Mother Prioress

visits to see the situation of a particular Benedictine community. This kind of visit helps a specific community check how it is going, progress and problems it has, and what possible solutions can be done in order to solve them; thus, bring an energetic and lively quality.

Last November 6, 2015, Friday, St. Scholastica’s Academy Marikina gave a hearty welcome to Mother Prioress, Mother Adelaida Ygrubay, OSB.

The grade 1 and 2 students

waved their flaglets as she entered the school campus in the morning.

Meanwhile, in the afternoon, everybody gathered at the Sister Imbug Covered Court (SICC) for a short welcome program to show case different talents and entertain the special visitor.

Sister Felice Imaya Calingayan, OSB opened the celebration with a prayer which was followed by the singing of the Philippine National Anthem led by the High School Glee Club and welcome remarks from the

school directress, Sister Angelica

Leviste, OSB. Mother Adelaida was surprised by

little Benedictine sisters from the kinder level who danced and sang to the tune of “Salve Maria” and “Holy Queen”. In addition, Anika Santiago, together with her voice teacher Ms. Gloria Diuco, gave their own interpretation of “Thank You for the Music”. Strings and Flute Quartet, together with Ms. Janice Derilo, from the High School Department performed the song, “Think of Me.”

the entire grade school community of St. Scholastica’s Academy Marikina for choosing me to be the your barangayette president for the incoming school year believing that I will be able to lead and represent in the student council.

I also want to express my gratitude to my campaign manager, Ate Katrina Ramos of 6-Charitable, and to all who supported and voted me. In addition, I would like to congratulate my fellow elected officers.

Generous as we are, I am planning to launch a project called “Share-a-Toy” where each of us will contribute a toy to be donated to orphanages. I will be working on projects that do not only benefit our school but also the community where we belong.

As your student council president, I look forward to serving you. We will work together as a team!

I will work to serve you to make myself worthy of your vote.

Pope Francis’ Christmas message reminded that the celebration is about Jesus as people become busy with gift-giving. Jesus, our Savior who sacrificed Himself, so that we may be saved from our sins, is the sign God has given us.

He also took the opportunity to call for an end of war between Israelis and Palestinians in Syria, Libya, Iraq, Yemen and sub-Saharan Africa. He continues to dream of a world free from terrorism – a place where everybody may experience true peace. He believes that this can only be possible through reconciliation among people.

The Pope gave emphasis on the previous year which was filled

with threats of terrorism as felt by many parts of the world. He added that these were fueled by religious extremism which in most cases Christians were special targets.

He prayed for those who generously work to provide assistance to refugees and continuously help them build a dignified tomorrow for themselves and for their loved ones.

It is hurting to know that religion is still an ongoing issue. Why do we have to argue on this? When can we put an end to this? Religion will not save us. It can only help us achieve the salvation God promised. Our actions matter most.

May Pope Francis’ message be a reminder of the word respect.

We must respect people’s choice of religion – not just Muslims on Christians but also Christians on Muslims. Perhaps it is about time to be united and stand for the world. We are all brothers and sisters.

I hope that we, Christians, will exert effort to be friends with people from different religions. Let us not wait for them. Let us be good models. Let us stop our prejudices because having these in our hearts and minds do not make us true servants and followers of God.

Let us remember that our God is of hope and of mercy, especially to those who have lost their dignity – the poor, unemployed, prisoners and victims of violence.

Demokrasya at kalayaan ang resulta ng mga pakikipaglaban at rebolusyon na naganap noon pang panahon ng mga Kastila at iba pang mananakop. Ang lahat ay naghahangad ng kalayaan at ng isang pinuno na mag-aalay ng kanyang oras at panahon upang mas mapabuti ang taong bayan. Kaya naman napakahalaga na ang bawat Pilipino ay makapili ng nais niyang pinuno ng bansa sa pamamagitan ng pagboto.

Ang bawat Pilipino ay binibigyan ng estado ng karapatan na makaboto ng nais na maging pinuno ng ating bansa, maliban na lamang sa mga mag-aaral at kabataang may edad labing-pito pababa. Kaya naman ang paaralan ay taunang nagkakaroon ng eleksyon upang maranasan at matuto ang mga mag-aaral na pumili ng kandidatong mamumuno sa kanila sa loob ng paaralan at higit sa lahat upang mahasa ang potensyal ng ibang mag-aaral sa larangan ng pamumuno.

Sa SSAM nagkakaroon ng taunang eleksyon ng Barangayette. Sa eleksyon na ito, nararanasan ng mga mag-aaral na magsalita bilang tumatakbong pinuno at makaboto bilang isang mag-aaral. Nakatutuwang isipin na bago matapos ang taon, nararanasan ng mga Kulasa ang mangampanya para sa mga kandidato at bumoto para sa mga mag-aaral. Mayroong nagaganap na “Meeting de Avance” at botohan sa pamamagitang ng e-voting. May tumatayong election officers na mga mag-aaral mula sa Girls Scout of the Philippines, may pagpirma at paglalagay ng ink sa mga daliri ng bumoto. Sa ganitong pamamaraan nararanasan ng mga mag-aaral na maging responsableng botante, napipili ng isang lider na magiging sandalan at modelo ng kapwa niya kamag-aral.

For several years, SSAM with understanding and thoughtful people, has become my second home.

I would like to express how grateful I am to our dearest Benedictine sisters who never failed to live a life centered in Christ and journey with us all the way to Christ’s salvation.

In addition, all of these would have not been possible without the school’s highly esteemed teachers who support us in our weaknesses and strengths making us grow into the persons that we are today. They have helped us become better in every situation. They have inculcated in us the values like ora et labora and simplicity of lifestyle that

we can forever treasure in our hearts. With all of these, I can truly say that

they are not just our second mothers but also our life role models.

I would like to extend my deepest gratitude to all the hardworking school personnel and maintenance staff. Thank you for keeping the school safe, healthy and conducive for learning.

To our valued life mentors and administrators, thank you for cheering us up when we’re down and in need of helping hands.

As your Barangayette president, I would like to express my sincerest appreciation to those who have shown me respect as an officer. I would also like to thank those who made it challenging for me to be a leader, because you helped me become better and more effective.

Ms. Melody Castillo on guitar and Ms. Beatriz Secondes on flute led the grade school teachers as they serenade the crowd with “On Top of the World” and “God Gave Me You.” The High School Ballet and High School Dance Club set the stage to a sensational dance number. The service personnel also showed the crowd their singing talent.

Mother Adelaida in a short speech shared about how her nervousness lessened by the warm welcome from Scholasticans. She also appreciated their great talents and great spirits. She then reminded everyone to always glorify God.

Most Catholics’ idea of saint is someone who lived a sacred life and who is already in heaven. They are role models to us. They are believed to be interceding with God on someone’s behalf through prayer request.

Mother Teresa, who was beatified by Pope John Paul II in October 2013 after a first posthumous miracle was approved, will be declared a saint

this September after Pope Francis recognized her second miracle which in most cases is needed to be canonized.

Her first miracle happened after a 30-year-old woman in Kolkata, India was cured after praying to Mother Teresa. This was declared as a miracle by Vatican since no scientific explanation for healing can be provided.

The second miracle happened to a Brazilian man with multiple brain tumors who was surprisingly healed after his loved ones prayed to Mother Teresa.

The spokeswoman for Missionaries of Charity, Mother Teresa’s religious order, Sunita Kumar, was delighted with this great news. She added that she was very emotional because she has seen so

many miracles until now. She said, “I couldn’t be happier today.”

Ang Nobyembre 18-19 ng taong 2015 ay isang malaking linggo para sa Pilipinas dahil ang mga delegado mula sa iba’t ibang bansa ay nagtagpo sa Maynila para sa Asian Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Economic Leader’s Meeting.

Ngayon na natapos na ang mahalagang pangyayaring ito, maaari na tayong huminga nang maluwag. Ngunit, may mga tanong pa rin na nasa isip ng mga Pilipino. Ano ang pinag-usapan ng mga lider na dumalo sa APEC? Makikinabang ba ang mga Pilipinong naperwisyo sa pulong na ito?

Sa loob ng dalawang araw, pinag-usapan ng mga lider ang mga importanteng isyu na kinahaharap ng iba’t ibang bansa at ito ay ang climate change at siyempre ang usapin sa terorismo. Sama-samang tinuligsa ng iba’t ibang lider ng mga bansa na kasapi ng APEC ang mga terrorist attacks sa iba’t ibang parte ng mundo. At nagkasundo rin ang mga lider na labanan ang patuloy na paglala ng climate change.

Ngunit hindi natapos ang usapin ng APEC sa pag-uwi ng mga bigating lider ng iba’t ibang bansa. Ito ay sa kadahilanang marami ang isyu na nagsulputan kaugnay nito. Isa na ang lubos na pagbibigay importansya sa mga delegado ng APEC. Umpisahan na lamang sa sobra- sobrang paghihigpit ng seguridad sa mga lugar na dadaan at pagdadausan ng pangpupulong, maraming kalsada ang isinara at libo-libong pulis ang ipinakalat. Habang ang mga lider ay nakasisiguro ng kaligtasan, ang mga ordinaryong mamamayan ay pawisang naglakad, nakipaghabulan at matagal na naghintay ng mga pampublikong sasakyan upang makapasok sa kanilang trabaho at makauwi sa bahay.

Maraming airlines ang nabawasan ng kita dahil sa pagbawal sa mga biyahe noong mga araw na iyon. May mga flights na kinansela kaya naman talagang marami ang nag-init ang ulo at tumaas ang kilay sa APEC at sa mga dalawamput-isang (21) bansang kasapi nito.

Ang Pilipinas ay gumasta ng sampung bilyong piso (P10Bilyon) para sa halos isang linggo ng pagpupulong na ito. May mga nagsabi na ang ginastos para sa kaganapang ito ay nararapat lamang. Ayon kay Ambassador Marciano Paynor Jr., director ng APEC National Organizing Council, ang mga abala na naging epekto ng APEC ay maliit na sakripisyo para sa malaking pakinabang na mula sa pangyayaring ito.

Subalit ayon kay dating Budget Secretary na si Benjamin Diokno, maaaring bumaba ang gastos kung ang pagtitipon ay ginanap sa labas ng Metro Manila. Ang suspensyon ng klase at ang pagkasela ng mga biyahe ng airlines ay nagbigay ng dagdag na bayarin para sa ekonomiya.

Iba’t iba man ang opinyon ng mga tao sa nakaraang APEC, maituturing pa ring matagumpay ang pag-organisa ng pamahalaan dito. Marami mang naabala, ang bansang Pilipinas ay umaasa pa rin na magkaroon ng pagbabago at maganda ang maging resulta ng APEC 2015 sa ekonomiya ng naghihikahos na bansa.

Dito muli nilang sinariwa ang sakit, pait at higit sa lahat ang tamis ng tagumpay, ang kalayaang kanilang inasam at nakuha sa mapayapang paraan. Gayun pa man hindi nawala ang mga icon ng mga mukha nang kilalang tao sa EDSA na sila dating Presidente Fidel V. Ramos, Senador Bong-Bong Marcos at ang dating Unang Ginang na si Imelda Marcos.

Nagbigay ng talumpati ang ating Pangulong Benigno Aquino III tungkol ipinakitang supporta

at pakikiisa ng mga Pilipino upang makamit ang katarungan at kalayaan. Bukod sa pagsariwa ng pagbubuklod ng mga Pilipino sa EDSA, sa taong ito nagbukas din ang isang Experiential Museum tungkol sa mga pangyayari noong panahon ng batas militar, paghihirap ng Pilipino sa pagkamit ng demokrasya at sa milagrong pagkakaroon ng mapayapang rebolusyon sa EDSA. Ito ay binuo ng EDSA People Power Commission upang muling balikan at maranasan ng mga mamayan ang takot at panggigipit sa panahon ng batas militar. Ang exhibit na ito ay nagsimula noong Pebrero 25 hanggang 26, 2016 sa Grandstand of Camp Aguinaldo, Quezon City.

Ang exhibit na ito ay hinati sa sampung sulok na ginamitan ng iba’t ibang elementong pangteatro, cinema, mga larawan at iba pang likhang sining na magpapabuhay at manggising sa kamalayan ng mga bibisita lalo na sa mga Pilipino noong panahon ng Batas Militar at Rebolusyong Edsa. Ilan sa mga sulok ng exhibit

ay ang hall of restless sleep, hall of hidden truths, hall of orphans, hall of the lost, halls of the pain, hall of the forgotten martyrs, hall of awakening at hall of action.

Tunay na maiiyak ka sa sulok kung saan sinariwa ang mga taong nagbuwis ng buhay at mga taong deseparasido o nawala noong panahong iyan na hanggang sa ngayon ay hindi pa rin nakikita ang mga labi. Kaya naman talagang masasariwa ng bawat Pilipinong bibisita rito ang sakit, pait, hirap at sa dulo ay ang pagwawagi laban sa isang pamahalang nabulag sa kapangyarian.

At sa pagdiriwang ng ika- 30 taong ng Rebolusyong EDSA muling ipinaaalala sa mga Pilipino ang kahalagahan ng pagkakaisa ng ating bayan lalo na sa nalalapit na eleksyon. Nawa’y magkaroon ng iisang isip at tinig ang mga Pilipino sa pagpili ng mga makabagong pinuno na hindi lamang sariling interes ang paiiralin at mananaig sa bansa kundi ang interes at karapatan ng nakararami at maglilingkod ng tapat sa isang bayang puno ng pag-asa.

Who would have thought that a Filipina engineer’s creative idea will make life easier and save the environment?

Well, here’s Aisa Mijeno, the co-founder of SALt (Sustainable Alternative Lighting) Philippines and inventor of a “more cost-effective, sustainable, environment-friendly and safer” lamp that is powered by one of the most abundant natural resources our archipelago has- saltwater!

She invented the SALt lamp with her brother Ralph and electrical engineer Oscar Bryan Magtibay.

A former professor at De La Salle University-Lipa, Mejino was motivated to be an engineer because of her commitment in beautifying the earth through making technologies, after being involved in Greenpeace Philippines where she became aware of the impact of climate change.

She was also moved by those who still survive despite their lack of material resources. “In addition, I am constantly inspired by the amazing people I encounter, especially those in rural marginalized areas, that, despite

the lack of resources, they are able to survive through everyday struggles by their innate ingenuity and remarkable resilience,” she said in an interview with asianscientist.com.

She also mentioned that her immersion in a far-flung community in Kalinga, where she witnessed Butbut tribe made fires or walk for hours to the nearest town to buy fuel for their lamps, pushed her to come up with this; thus, they can prevent from the dangers of using kerosene.

During a forum in the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation

(APEC) last November 2015, she was applauded after being interviewed by Chinese businessman Jack Ma and President Barack Obama of United States she presented her invention.

This saline solution lamp relies on a galvanic cell battery, in which the electrolyte solution consists purely of

salty water, into which two electrodes are placed. The same approach is being used in battery designs for other LED (light-emitting diode) lanterns, and is the basis of renewable energy. The lamp burns for eight hours at a time running on only a glass of water and two teaspoons of salt.

The finished product is expected to generate enough power to charge smartphones via the USB port on the side of the device.

With an introductory price of less than 500 pesos, this lamp is in mass production producing 500 units per day in its plant in Biñan, Laguna and is expected to be sold in the local market during the second or third quarter of this year.

When asked about her advice to other researchers, she shares that having the initiative to find answers to questions even without [expecting] something tangible in return is the key. All of us have many questions but most just tend to dismiss them because of lack of motivation. She adds that even without any sort of reward, we should continuously quest for answers.”

At the onset of the New Year, Pope Francis spoke before a huge crowd at St. Peter’s Square in Vatican City.

Looking back at the previous year, violence and terrorism had left a huge mark in our quest for world peace. Terrorist attacks in Paris, airstrikes in Syria, and other violent events continue to change the course of modern history with millions of innocent lives in the line of fire. With everything that is carving a deep trench between the quest for world peace and its reality, it seems for many that global peace is a clear concept of an impossible dream.

Pope Francis points out that indifference in all its forms is the root cause of the ongoing conflicts. Indifference to God affects our selfish actions towards the environment, and our neighbors.

As we get caught up in worldwide events, have we stopped and carefully thought of how unfortunate series of events to others affect us? Have we lately realized how these news stories pass and simply go

through our ears and eyes rather than through our hearts and minds? The fact is that most societies do not realize that helping others

may eliminate this world of indifference. It is caused by the unconscious minds, blind eyes and deaf ears of societies

with focus only on how fortunate we are more from others. We might peep into life’s reality, but we still

need to go further. We tend to forget those who are suffering as we

live in comfort and in perfect health. We haven’t realize that we contribute to the damage of global household through pollution, misuse of forests, animal abuse, and other bad actions towards nature.

The feeling of indifference is a silent killer that awaits to collect the profit as the rest of us play our

best to be the by stander.This is a calling to all of us. We should not wait for

tomorrow. The future of our children starts today. Let us scrap any forms of indifference despite our differences.

Itinuturing na isa sa pinakamahalagang panahon para sa mga katoliko ang KUWARESMA, galing sa salitang Quadragesima o apatnapu. Ang kuwaresma ay ang apatnapung araw ng paggunita sa misteryo ng pagpapakasakit, pagkamatay at muling pagkabuhay ni Jesus. Sa panahong ito, ang mga Katoliko ay pinagninilay at pinagbabalik loob sa Diyos, sa tulong ng maraming debosyon at kaugalian upang tayo ay maging mabuting tagasunod ng Diyos. Nag-uumpisa ito sa Miyerkules ng Abo at nagtatapos sa Linggo ng Pagkabuhay.

Ang pagdarasal o prayers, pag-aayuno o fasting at ang pagbibigay-limos o alms giving ay tinuturing na haligi ng mga gawaing pangkuwaresma. Ayon kay San Juan Crisologus, isang ama ng simbahang Katoliko noong ika- 5 siglo ang mga gawaing ito ay ang nagpapatatag sa pananampalataya, debosyon at kabanalan.

Sinasabi ng mga nakatatanda na ibang-iba na ang paggunita ngayon sa panahon ng Kuwaresma. Noon, sa pagpasok ng Lunes Santo makikita ang mga Pilipinong Katoliko na tahimik at nagninilay. Walang palabas sa telebisyon kung hindi ang mga pelikula patungkol sa buhay ni Hesus, marami ang nananalangin sa

simbahan at sumasama sa mga prusisyon. At sa Biyernes Santo walang malakas na musika at pag-uusap, hindi kumakain ng baboy at masarap na ulam sa mga araw na ito bilang sakripisyo. Ramdam na ramdam ng bawat tao noon ang pagtitika sa panahong ito.

Kaiba ito sa nakagisnan ng mga kabataan ngayon, sa halip na manalingin, magtika at magbigay limos sa linggo ng mahal na araw o Holy Week ay ginagawa itong panahon ng pagpapahinga at pagbabakasyon. Marami ang palabas sa telebisyon lalo na kung may cable ka, may mga pelikula sa internet, bukas ang mga mall maliban sa araw ng Biyernes Santo at higit sa lahat “sale” o may promo ang pamasahe sa mga naglalakihang airline companies.

Saan nga ba papunta si Juan sa panahong ito ng kuwaresma? Sa kabi-kabilang tukso na nakapaligid saan nga ba dapat tumakbo si Juan? Sasama ba siya sa mga taong nais magbalik-loob kay Hesus o ipapahinga ang sarili sa pang-araw-araw na gawain? Magtitiis ba o makikisaya sa tunog at saya ng musika sa mga magagandang lugar sa bansa?

Bilang Katolikong Pilipino saan mo dadalhin ang sarili mo? Saan mo aakayin ang pamilya mo?

Isa sa hamon sa mga guro ang pagmulat ng kamalayan ng bawat mag-aaral hindi lamang sa mga mag-aaral ng pribadong paaralan bagkus sa lahat ng kabataan na nagnanais matuto. Matuturing na napaka swerte ng isang batang nakakain ng higit sa tatlong beses isang araw, nakakapag-aral sa pribadong paaralan, nakapaglalaro ng malaya, at may sapat na kagamitan sa pagkatuto. Pero paano na lamang kung ikaw ay isinilang sa isang pamilyang sapat lang sa pagkain ang kayang ibigay sa mga anak at kulang ang kakayahang makapagpapasok ng anak sa pribadong paaralan o kahit pa sa pampublikong paaralan? Saan sila magtutungo? Hahayaan na lamang ba ang mga kabataang ito na masayang ang sarili at isip dahil sa kanilang kapalaran?

Kaya naman isa sa binigyang ng pamunuan ng SSAM ang pagbibigay ng ilang mga libro mula sa aklatan ng paaralan. Sila Gng. Jennifer Medina, Bb. Rorie Garcia, Bb. Anna Marie Purificacion at Bb. JC Caraballos ang naging kinatawan ng paaralan na magtungo sa Montalban Town Center, Montalban City upang ibahagi ang mga aklat sa Silid Aralan Inc.. Ang Silid Aralan Inc. ay isang organisasyong naglalayong magbigay tulong sa mga kabataang nais matuto at mag-aral ngunit walang sapat na kakayahan upang tugunan ang nais nilang pagkatuto. Naglalayon din ang organisasyon na ito na bigyan ang mga kabataan ng kumpiyansa sa pag-aaral upang malinang ang sariling kakayahan. Ang organisasyon ay naniniwala na ang bawat bata ay may angking talino na dapat linangin ng mga guro upang magamit sa mas makabuluhang gawain. Ito ay ginagawa nila sa pamamagitan pagtuturo ng mga gawaing praktikal na magagamit sa kanilang pang-araw-araw at sa kanilang hilig o nais gawin, sinasamahan din nila ito ng pagpapahalaga o values.

Nawa’y ang mga aklat na ito ay magbigay daan at inspirasyon sa mas maraming kabataan na mag-aral, matuto at linangin ang ibinigay na talento ng Diyos.

Sino nga ba si Gng. Cruz? Taong 1990, unang tumapak ang mga paa ng ginang sa paaralang St. Scholastica’s Academy Marikina. Hindi ito ang unang naging tahanan ng ginang sa larangan ng pagtuturo ngunit ito ang kanyang naging tunay na tahanan sa loob ng 25 na taon.

Masasabing hindi lamang mahusay na guro ang ginang bagkus siya rin ay isang masipag, masayahin at organisadong empleyado ng paaralan. Bihirang lumiban sa trabaho at maagang pumasok.

Si Tita Rosie ay maasahan mong tutulong at magpapayo sa kapwa niya guro ng mga dapat nilang malaman sa kanilang trabaho lalo na sa kanyang pinamumunuang erya sa Filipino. Isang lapit mo lang agad ka niyang pakikinggan at tutulungan sa abot ng kanyang makakaya.

It is no denial that Ms. Emma A. Eata, a teacher at St Scholastica’s Academy Marikina for 39 years has truly dedicated herself in the assignment which God gave her. She taught Filipino 6 teacher and was the class adviser of 6-Prudent for this school year.

Her co-teachers and students usually see her with generosity and great devotion in her teaching because she loves to share her skills especially her artistic ability. “When she teaches something, she always makes it the best for the students,” according to our grade school principal, Sister Alexis Lamarroza, OSB. Moreover, it was also nice to hear straight from her students that

Ms. Eata is very kind and is always willing to help them in their troubles. “She is very caring and very lovable. A real mother indeed,” said Kaylyn Anjela, the class president of Ms. Eata’s advisory class last S.Y. 2014-2015.

On her last year at SSAM, she remains to be the same Ms. Eata that students have seen and encountered since she started her teaching career in the school. Everyone will surely miss her cheerfulness and her very motherly character.

Ms. Eata indeed is extraordinary, for she goes beyond her roles by being a friend and mother to her students. As Sister Alexis said, “She’s not the kind of person who will please you because she wanted you to become good as a person.”

To Ms. Eata, this is not just a life worth-living but a mission well done.

Tuwing papasok ang buwan ng Pebrero ang buong paaralan ay laging nanabik sa mga kasiyahan at pagdiriwang sa buwan na ito.

Bukod sa paggunita sa kapistahan ng mahal na patron na si St.Scholastica, ang paaralan ay nadiriwang sa pamamagitan ng taunang School Fair na pinamagatang Putok sa Bundok na naganap noong ika 5 at 6 ng Pebrero.

Ang ideya ng pamagat na Putok sa Bundok ay BUNDOK sa kadahilanan na ang lokasyon ng paaralan ay matatagpuan sa mataas na bahagi ng Marikina at PUTOK, ibig sabihin ay ingay mula sa kasiyahan at tawanan ng mga mag-aaral, guro at iba pang empleyado ng paaralang SSAM. Tiyak naman na taun-taon gumagawa ng ingay ang Putok sa Bundok ng paaralan.

Mag-uumpisa ang lahat sa pasasalamat sa Panginoon sa pamamagitan ng isang institusyonal na misa, susundan ito ng ribbon cutting at pagbabasbas ng fair ground.

Kaiba sa ibang school fair ang Putok sa Bundok, dahil kahit sa ganitong kasiyahan napapanatili pa rin ng paaralan ang pagkapayak ng kasiyahan. Oo, payak o simple pero masaya dahil makikita mo ang mga mag-aaral na suot lamang ang kanilang uniporme o activity shirt. Bagama’t may samu’t saring pagkain, ilang mga rides kagaya ng Mechanical Bull Ride, Go Karts at Zorb; inflatables at bungee fun, makikita mo pa rin ang ilan sa mga mag-aaral ay naglalaro at nagtatakbuhan lamang sa damuhan.

Mainit man, bahagyang umulan at may kahabaan ang pila sa mga rides at mga kainan makikita pa rin dito ang kasiyahan sa mga mukha ng mag-aaral at siyempre ng pamilya nila na patuloy na nagmamahal at sumusuporta sa mga gawain ng paaralan.

Filipino viewers bade goodbye to the characters of Leah and Clark of “On the Wings of Love” or OTWOL last February 16, 2016. What made it talked about is its surprise ending at Ynares Center, Antipolo City.

The Philippine romantic comedy television series started on August 10, 2016. It captured the hearts of Filipinos here and abroad through ABS-CBN and the Filipino Channel.

The protagonists Leah and Clark were played by real-life sweethearts Nadine Lustre and James Reid. It is a story of a woman (Leah), a simple girl with an American dream and a man (Clark), a Fil-Am guy looking for his biological father in America. Leah decided to go to America to look for her mother’s grave and help her family live a comfortable life in the Philippines. In order to fulfil her dreams she must marry a US citizen to have legal papers. The two met through Tita Jack, Clark’s Aunt who is also the mother of his ex-boyfriend Jigs. They agreed to become a fake couple to pass the Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS) interview. Soon, this sham wedding became real.

The show had been trending from its first until the last episode. Fans were religiously glued on their TV screens every night just to stay up tune to the development of the story. Those who missed an episode catch up online thru iWant TV making it the most watched program on the site with 3.7 million page views for September alone.

The “kilig” factor of the JaDine indeed captured the hearts of the viewers giving it a strong rating nationwide.

OTWOL and JaDine indeed caused fever. Fans are still waiting for the next project of this talked-about love team as they make a good chemistry.

EDSA’s carrying capacity is 160,000 vehicles per direction. However, former MMDA Chairman Francis Tolentino said that there are actually about 520,000 vehicles traversing per day. Isn’t that really a big problem?

A more convenient option of commuters today is through GrabTaxi and Uber.

GrabTaxi which you probably have already heard started in Malaysia in 2012 with the original name, “MyTeksi.” It was established by a student from Harvard Business School student, Anthony Tan. It expanded to neighboring countries in Southeast Asia like Philippines a year after it was launched. It is a pool of selected existing taxis at a standard including drivers. Unlike ordinary taxis, they are not flagged anywhere on the street. A mobile application needs to be installed by a client since booking a taxi is done over the internet where one can select which driver and unit he or she would have. An advantage to availing to this kind of service is that the passenger’s safety is assured because of its tracking feature available for family members. In the same way, the driver is also safe since each client maintains a profile to be able to use the application. Aside from taxi, Grab offers other services such as bicycle, motorbike, cars and vans.

Uber is another company which has gained popularity in our roads. It started in Europe in 2009. Unlike Grab, passengers ride on a private vehicle; thus, one gets to experience riding from a simple Sedan to luxury and even sports car. Their clients do not pay in cash but through a credit card. This gives their drivers and passengers protection. Uber just pay their drivers through bank deposits.

Bahay na Bato sa La Union

Ang bahay na bato ay makikita sa Nalvo Norte, Luna, La Union. Ito ay may entrance fee na nagkakahalaga ng P10. Dito makakakita ka ng iba’t ibang bato na inukitan o dinesenyohan. Makakakita ka rin dito ng maliliit na bato na may iba’t ibang hugis, kulay, at laki.


Noong nakaraang Oktubre 26, 2015, ang mga mag-aaral mula sa Young Scholastican Journalists (YSJ), Smart Speakers at Techno-Kids ay sama-samang bumisita at nakisalamuha sa mga tao sa likod ng pahayagang Philippine Daily Inquirer at sa studio ng GMA 7. Matagal-tagal na pagpapalano at pag-aayos ng iskedyul ang ginawa ng mga moderator na sila Gng. Ciela Del Rosario, Bb. Charlotte Christie De Leon, Gng. Jonida Santos at Bb. Florence Barcil upang maisakatuparan ang paglalakay ng maayos at may pagkatuto.

Kaya naman ng sumapit ang araw ng paglalakbay ay nasabik ang lahat. Sino ba naman, ang hindi masasabik sa bihirang pagkakatanong ito na makapasok sa loob ng paggawaan ng pinakasikat at pinagkakatiwalang pahayagan sa bansa at ang isa sa nangungunang estasyon sa telebisyon. Mahigit tatlumpu ang mga mag-aaral na nagsipagdalo na sinamahan ng kanikanilang moderator at iba pang moderator na sila Bb. Jc Caraballos at Bb. Bagkus gumagamit sila ng makabagong teknolohiya na tinatawag na fiber optic communication upang mas mapabilis ang paglipat o pagtanggap ng mga naisulat na balita upang mabuo ang pahayagan sa bawat araw. Ang optic fiber communication ay umaabot sa 100 petabit×kilometer bawat segudo ang bilis nito sa internet. Talagang napakabilis nito kumpara sa ginagamit natin na internet sa bahay. Bukod dito nalaman din ng mga mag-aaral na mayroong dalawang pag-iimpreta ang ginagawa ng Philippine Daily Inquirer,

bagkus dalawang ang unang lalabas sa isang araw ay mapupunta sa mga dulong probinsya at ang pinakabagong balita ay ang lumalabas sa Metro Manila at karatig na lugar.

Marami pa ang nais ibahagi si Bb. Bianca ng Philippine Daily Inquirer ngunit nagkaroon ng biglaang pagbisita at panayam si G. Mar Roxas kung kaya hindi na nagkaroon ng iba pang panayam at pagbabahagi sa kanilang opisina.

Ang sumunod na pinuntahan ng grupo ay ang isa sa pinakakilalang Television Network, ang GMA. Sa lugar na ito sa may Timog Avenue, Lungsod ng Quezon, mas marami ang nasabik, inaasahang makakakita sila ng artista o makasalubong ang ilan sa kilalang personalidad. Dito naman sinalubong ang mga mag-aaral ng mababait at maasikasong tour facilitators na sila G. Lester Banal at Bb. Leah Dagsi. Totoong ang lahat ay nasabik sa mga inihandang gawain at pag-ikot ng mga facilitators sa grupo. Nagsimula ang lahat sa pagbibigay ng oryentasyon at mga dapat tandaan sa pag-ikot at pagpasok sa mga istudio ng GMA. Hindi pa man nagtatagal ang oryentasyon sa grupo dumaan na ang

isa sa iginagalang na mamamahayag na si Bb. Jessica Soho, bise-presidente ng news programs ng istasyon, na bumati ng mabilis sa grupo. Matapos ang pagbibigay ng oryentasyon kaagad na nilibot ng grupo ang iba’t ibang studio ng GMA. Unang tinungo ng grupo ang studio 1 kung saan nagaganap ang pag-uulat sa mga “breaking news” na Balita Pilipinas Ngayon, maswerte ang grupo na nakasaksi ng live report ni G. Mark Salazar. Ang ikalawang studio ay hindi na pinasilip dahil hindi pa nakaayos ito mula sa pagkakagamit ng Unang Hirit. Pero hindi nalungkot ang grupo dahil naikot naman ang iba pang studio hangang sa pinakamalaking studio ng GMA at ito ang istudio 6 at 7. Bukod sa pasilip at pagpapakita ng mga makabagong camera at studio nakapanayam pa ng grupo ang isa sa kilalang news reporter na si Mariz Umali. Dito nagkaroon ng pagkakataon ang mga mag-aaral na tanungin siya tungkol sa kanyang propesyon bilang isang mamamahayag. Marami ang natuwa at nakinig sa kanyang pagkukwento tungkol sa kanyang mga karanasang bilang reporter. Matapos ang panayam ay nagkaroon ng talakayan at

pagtatanong ang facilitators tungkol sa mga natutunan ng mga mag-aaral, syempre sila rin ay nagbigay ng mga memorabilia bilang premyo.

Totoong hindi lamang sa apat na sulok ng klasrum o silid may matutunan ang mga mag-aaral kundi sa iba’t ibang karanasan na ibinibigay ng mga guro kagaya nalamang ng paglabas sa paaralan at pakikisalamuha sa ibang tao. Mula sa simpleng panonood ng mga makina sa imprentahan ng Inquirer hangang sa pala isipang ibig sabihin ng GMA na Greater Manila Area kung saan ipinakikita ang kayang abutin ng estasyon at pagbabago nito bilang Global Media Art; sa pagbibigay ng kalayaan sa mga mag-aaral na magtanong mula sa simpleng empleyado sa Inquirer hanggang sa kilalang reporter sa GMA lahat ng ito’y nagbigay ng bagong ideya at kaalaman sa bawat isang sumama sa lakbay aral na ito. Maikli man ang oras at may dalawang lugar lang ang napuntahan malayo naman ang naibigay na kaalaman at karanasan sa bawat isa mapa guro man o mag-aaral. Tunay na hindi makakalimutang karanasan!

A group of students from Grade 5-Persevering conducted a survey to 150 intermediate level students. The survey asked students to rate 5 factors considered by Filipinos in choosing a leader: academic background, years in public service, clean record, platforms and popularity.

Among these, the results show that above all, Scholasticans like somebody with clean record – no filed cases related to plunder, betrayal of public trust, graph and corruption, and the like. This was followed by the academic background of the politician which includes his or her field or course in college, the school where he or she studied, his or her honors and further studies.

Of course, next to those are years in public service and platforms.

The years in public service speaks of the experience of the politician in local and national government. Platforms on the other hand are their plans for the country should they win the election.

Popularity does not really matter for them as it got only 186 points. Philippine election is known is for famous personalities like celebrities running for various government positions, like Sen. Vicente Sotto III of Tito, Vic and Joey, Sen. Lito Lapid, a veteran action star and Cong. Manny Pacquiao, the “Pambansang Kamao.” Endorsement from celebrities also attracts voters.

Pagbabahagi sa mga Kapatid na Street Cleaners

Ang mga street cleaners kasama ang kanilang mga anak

Muling nagkita ang mga mag-aaral sa ikalawang baiting at ang kanilang napiling partner para sa kanilang Social Involement Program (SIP), ang mga street cleaners ng Marikina Heights, noong ika-26 ng Enero sa Sister Imburg Covered Court sa St. Scholastica’s Academy Marikina.

Dito ay namahagi sila ng ilang gamitan at mga grocery sa mga ito. Lahat din ay masayang sumali sa mga palaro. Hindi naman ipinapagpas ng mga bata ang pagkakataong magpakita ng kanila talento sa pagsayaw.

Damang-dama ng mga bata at guro ang galak sa kanilang muling pag-aabot at pagbahagi ng tulong sa mga kapatid nating street cleaners. Kitang-kita din ang lubos na pasasalamat ng mga ito sa panahong ibinahagi ng mga bata para sa kanila.

Masayang nagpakita ng galing sa pagsayaw ang mga mag-aaral sa ikatlong baitang.

Noong ika-11 ng Marso ay naganap ang ikalawang bahagi ng Social Involvement Program (SIP) ng ikatlong baitang kasama ang mga piling sapatero ng Marikina at ang kanilang pamilya.

Ang mga mag-aaral ay nagkaroon ng pagkakataon makasalamuha at makatulong sa mga bisita. Sa pamamagitan ng pakikipaglaro ng mga mag-aaral ng bawat pangkat kasama ang mga sapatero at kanilang mga anak. Nagkaroon din ng mga pagpapkita ng talento ng mga mag-aaral. Ang mga guro, ilang mag-aaral at magulang ng ikatlong baitang naman ay sama-samang nagbahagi ng tulong na grocery package para sa mga pamilya. Bakas sa mukha ng lahat ang saya pagkatapos ng programa.

Ika-18 ng Marso muling nasundan ng ikatlong bahagi ang SIP ng ikatlong baitang. Ang mga guro, PSR (Parents Section Representative), SIP volunteers at ilang mag-aaral ay nagtungo sa Shoe Avenue, Sto. Niño, Marikina City upang magbahagi ng grocery package sa ilang mga sapatero sa lugar. Walang katumbas ang kasiyahang idinulot ng mga gawaing ito sa pamilya ng mga sapatero at higit sa lahat ng mga taong nagtulong-tulong upang maisakatuparan ang mga gawaing ito.

Magsilbi sanang daan ang gawaing ito upang mas pahalagahan ang mga sapatero sa Marikina siyang bumubuhay sa industriyang tatak Marikina.

GURO SA IKA-APAT NA BAITANG

Nagpamalas ng talento ang Barangay Security Force.

Ika-26 ng Pebrero, 2016, sa ikalawang pagkakataon ay muling nagkita at nakisalamuha ang mga mag-aaral ng ikaapat na baitang sa Barangay Security Force ng Barangay Marikina Heights.

Pinaghandaan ng mga mag-aaral at kanilang mga magulang ang araw na ito. Nagkaroon ng iba’t ibang supresang bilang ang piling mag-aaral at ang kanilang magulang. Kaya hindi naman nagpatalo ang mga Barangay Security Force sa pagpapakita ng kanilang pinaghandaang awit at sayaw para sa mga mag-aaral. Pero ang saya, ay hindi natapos sa pagpapakita ng mga talento ng mag-aaral at Barangay Security Force dahil mas nag-init at sumaya ang programa nung nagsimula ang iba’t ibang palaro na inihanda ng mga magulang para sa mga mag-aaral at siyempre sa mga Barangay Security Force. Sa pagtatapos ng programa, hindi nakalimutan ng ikaapat na baitang na magbigay ng kaunting handog sa mga Barangay Security Force bilang pasaslamat sa kanilang ibinibigay na maayos na serbisyo sa pamayanan.

Talaga naman hindi makakalimutan ng bawat isa ang saya nang pagtulong at pagkilala sa mga taong nagbibigay ng serbisyo sa ating pamayanan. At sa maikling panahon ng pakikisalamuha sa mga Barangay Security Force marami ang natututo at napangiti ng programang ito.

Masayang sinalubong ng mga lolo ang mga mag-aaral sa ika-anim na baitang.

Naging mas makabuluhan ang ikalawang semester sa mga mag-aaral ng ika-anim na baitang. Ito ay sa dahilang namulat ang lahat sa buhay ng mga matatanda sa loob ng isang elderly care ang Good Samaritan Nursing Home for the Elderly sa Marikina Heights.

Mula Disyembre 2015 hanggang Pebrero 2016 ay lingo-lingong binibisita ng mga mag-aaral ang mga matatanda upang maghatid ng saya at makapagbigay ng kaunting materyal na pangangalaingan ng mga ito.

Sa bawat isang oras na pagbisita ng mag-aaral, tiniyak nilang naibigay at naipakita nila ang kanilang talento sa mga lolo at lola nila doon. Ang iba ay naghandog ng sayaw, ang iba naman ay mga awitin tulad na lamang ng kantang ginawa nila para sa kanilang pagtatapos, “Ating Tagumpay”. Tunay na isang makabuluhang gawain ang makisalamuha sa mga matatanda lalo na ang mga matatandang halos nilimot na at napabayaan ng kanilang pamilya.

Sa kanilang pag-uwi, baon nila ang mga aral tungkol sa buhay na natutunan nila gaya nang pagbibigay oras at panahon , at siyempre ang pag-aalaga sa mga matatanda.

Maikli man ang panahon na nakapiling nila ang mga ito, sulit naman ang oras dahil napadama nila ang pagmamahal na dapat nilang ipadama sa mga ito.

Taon 1981 unang iginawad sa SSAM ang pagkilala ng PAASCU. Ito ay nasundan ng sunod-sunod na pagkilala sa mataas na kalidad ng paaralan mula taong 1985, 1990, 1995 at 2005 sa ikalawang lebel ng PAASCU. At muling naitaas ng paaralan ang kanyang istatus sa ikatlong lebel noong 2011.

Kaya naman matapos ang limang taon, muling inimbitahan ng SSAM ang PAASCU upang mapanatili at matiyak na nakakamit ng paaralan ang pamantayan sa pagbibigay ng may kalidad na edukasyon sa bansa.

Ang PAASCU ay nagpadala ng mga accreditors mula sa iba’t ibang paaralan noong ika 3 at 4 ng Disyembre 2015. Ito ay pinangunahan ni Dra. Ma. Corazon Reyes, dating BED Director ng Miriam College, sa Quezon City kasama sila Gng. Charmaine Ramos, Faculty, Unit 2 ng Colegio San Agustin, sa Makati City, Gng. Elizabeth Mendoza, Grade School Principal, St. Theresa’s College, sa Quezon City, Bb. Fabiana Macalalad, Librarian (Audio-Visual), St. Joseph’s College of Quezon City, sa Quezon City, Bb Gloria Diaz, PAASCU Executive Administrator, La Consolacion College, Caloocan City, Gng Lucrecia Tabayoyong, Former Assistant Primcipal, Marist School, Marikina City, at Gng. Gemma Chua, PAASCU Representative.

Masinop na inobserbahan at sinuri ng mga accreditors ang kalidad ng edukasyon sa paaralan sa pamamagitan ng pagsilip at pag-aaral ng mga ulat sa sumusunod na erya: administration at school staff, non-teaching personnel, curricular programs at instruction, instructional media center, student services at facilities upang mas mapaunlad at mas maging angkop ang mga ito sa pagkatuto ng mga mag-aaral.

Natapos man ang dalawang araw nang pagbisita at pagsusuri ng mga accreditors ng PAASCU, ang pamunuan at ang mga guro ay walang sawa ipagpapatuloy ang mga nasimulang mga gawain at ipatutupad ang mga pagbabago sa larangan ng edukasyon para sa ikabubuti ng mga mag-aaral ng SSAM.

1. Set a goal for yourself. If you have a particular amount in mind, then, it is easier for you to save money.

2. Make a chart. You should have a chart. Everytime you put money in your piggy bank, you should put a mark or a sticker on that week to see how close you are to reaching your goal.

3. Start the jar or envelope budgeting system. If you really want to get the thing that you are saving for, you can do this. You can have one for bigger amounts and one that is lesser.

4. Visualize what you are going to do with the money you save. Draw or cut what you would want to buy with its price. Then stick or hang it out on a wall. This will really help you to reaching your goal.

5. Put your money in a place where you will not be tempted to take it out or spend it. We should keep our money somewhere we won’t be tempted to get it.

Grades 4 to 10 students gathered for a symposium called “Live Pure Movement” in Christian Living Program at the Sister Imburg Covered Court last February 27, 2016.

Live Pure Movement is a foundation which goes around the world to share the Good News of Chastity.

They shared with Scholasticans the factors that may influence people specifically teenagers nowadays:

1.Social Media. Almost everyone in the world has accounts on

Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and other social networking sites. It is a venue for sharing thoughts,

feelings and even pictures related to travels and food. What we post affect us either causing us to be happy, sad or even angry. There are times when we get offended or the other way around.

It may be true for some. We can’t move on from what we can view in our smartphones, tablet and laptop. We tend to bring it beyond – to our real world.

2. Mass Media. They can come in visual or print. Each

of us has a wide a access on t e l e v i s i o n ,

radio, internet, newspaper and magazine. It is our source of getting the latest news about different celebrities and other known personalities in the society. They keep us up-to-date about the development of loveteams such as AlDub, JaDine and the like.

3 .Songs. Music is a part of life. Songs speak about significant

human experiences. . They cause us tears, laughter and even smile. They even intensify the pain that we feel especially at times when we are down. But then, not all songs are good for the ear. Some of them

leave us with negative things

such as learning profane words which we consciously get used to. For most, especially teenager, we disregard the language and the meaning of the lyrics as long as they make move with the beat.
