Reflection by Dianne Bergant CSS

Although this is not the last Sunday of the liturgical year, the major theme found in the readings is the end of time. The events that will ush-er in and will take place during this time are described in apocalyptic terms. The struggles of life will culminate in a massive cosmic confron-tation between the forces of good and those of evil. This last battle will be universal in scope, just like the first primordial conflict between cha-os and God.

In some way, all of today’s readings state that good will finally prevail over evil. In the last days Michael, the angelic warrior of God, will rise up. In the epistle, Christ is pictured seated triumphantly at the right hand of God with his enemies under his foot, a sign of conquest. Finally, in the gospel, the Son of Man, the mysterious figure from apocalyptic liter-ature, comes in the clouds with great power and glory. All of these im-ages are apocalyptic; each of them is quite hopeful.

We read these stories at the close of the liturgical year, because we are coming to the conclusion of our yearly telling of the story of salvation. However, apocalyptic images are timely whenever we find ourselves in the throes of the battle with evil and it appears that we will succumb. These forms will remind us that good will be able to withstand evil. From this we will conclude that we need only trust in God.

Living the Gospel – People of Hope

Whilst the community who were the intended audience of the Gospel of Mark were expecting the return of Jesus and the end times to occur during their lifetimes, nearly two thousand years later we realise that wasn’t the case. Today, as in Mark’s time, many people approach the future and change with fear and apprehension. As Christian people we are called to be optimistic and hopeful as we approach the future. We know that God is good, that God loves us unconditionally and that God has a dream for us. That is the simple basis of Christian hope.

SECOND READING Hebrews 10:11-14. 18

A reading from the letter to the Hebrews All the priests stand at their duties every day, offering over and over again the same sacrifices which are quite incapable of taking sins away. Christ, on the other hand, has offered one single sacrifice for sins, and then taken his place for ever, at the right hand of God, where he is now waiting until his enemies are made into a footstool for him. By virtue of that one single offering, he has achieved the eternal perfection of all whom he is sanctifying. When all sins have been forgiven, there can be no more sin offerings.

The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION Alleluia, alleluia! Be watchful and pray constantly, that you may be worthy to stand before the Son of Man. Alleluia!

GOSPEL Mark 13:24-32

A reading from the holy Gospel according to Mark Jesus said to his disciples: 'In those days, after the time of distress, the sun will be darkened, the moon will lose its brightness, the stars will come falling from heaven and the powers in the heavens will be shaken. And then they will see the Son of Man coming in the clouds with great power and glory; then too he will send the angels to gather his chosen from the four winds, from the ends of the world to the ends of heaven.

ENTRANCE ANTIPHON The Lord said: I think thoughts of peace and not of affliction. You will call upon me, and I will an-swer you, and I will lead back your captives from every place.

FIRST READING Daniel 12:1-3

A reading from the prophet Daniel

'At that time Michael will stand up, the great prince who mounts guard over your people. There is going to be a time of great dis-tress, unparalleled since nations first came into existence. When that time comes, your own peo-ple will be spared, all those whose names are found written in the Book. Of those who lie sleeping in the dust of the earth many will awake, some to ever-lasting life, some to shame and everlasting disgrace. The learned will shine as brightly as the vault of heaven, and those who have instructed many in virtue, as bright as stars for all eternity.' The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

RESPONSORIAL PSALM R. Keep me safe, O God; you are my hope.

O Lord, it is you who are my por-tion and cup; it is you yourself who are my prize. I keep the Lord ever in my sight: since he is at my right hand, I shall stand firm. R.

And so my heart rejoices, my soul is glad; even my body shall rest in safety. For you will not leave my soul among the dead, nor let your beloved know decay. R.

You will show me the path of life, the fullness of joy in your pres-ence, at your right hand happi-ness for ever. R.

'Take the fig tree as a parable: as soon as its twigs grow sup-ple and its leaves come out, you know that summer is near. So with you, when you see these things happening: know that he is near, at the very gates. I tell you solemnly, be-fore this generation has passed away all these things will have taken place. Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away.

'But as for that day or hour, no-body knows it, neither the an-gels of heaven, nor the Son; no one but the Father.'

The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

COMMUNION ANTIPHON To be near God is my happi-ness, to place my hope in God the Lord.

QUOTE OF THE WEEK It is precisely in contemplating Jesus’ death that faith grows stronger and receives a dazzling light; then it is re-vealed as faith in Christ’s steadfast love for us, a love capa-ble of embracing death to bring us salvation. This love, which did not recoil before death in order to show its depth, is something I can believe in; Christ’s total self-gift overcomes every suspicion and enables me to entrust my-self to him completely.” - Pope Francis, Lumen Fidei 2013 (16)

Saint of the Week

St Margaret of Scotland

16 November

Margaret was an English princess. She and her mother sailed to Scotland to escape from the king

who had conquered their land. King Malcolm of Scotland welcomed them and fell in love with the

beautiful princess. Margaret and Malcolm were married before too long.

As Queen, Margaret changed her husband and the country for the better. Malcolm was good, but he

and his court were very rough. When he saw how wise his beloved wife was, he listened to

her good advice. She softened his temper and led him to practise great virtue. She made the court

beautiful and civilised. Soon all the princes had better manners, and the ladies copied her purity and

devotion. The king and queen gave wonderful example to everyone by the way they prayed together

and fed crowds of poor people with their own hands. They seemed to have only one desire: to make

everyone happy and good.

Margaret was a blessing for all the people of Scotland. Before she came, there was

great ignorance and many bad habits among them. Margaret worked

hard to obtain good teachers, to correct the evil practices, and to have

new churches built. She loved to make these churches beautiful for

God's glory, and she embroidered the priests’ vestments herself.

God sent this holy Queen six sons and two daughters. She loved them

dearly and raised them well. The youngest boy became St David. But

Margaret had sorrows, too. In her last illness, she learned that both her

husband and her son, Edward, had been killed in battle. Yet she prayed:

"I thank you, Almighty God, for sending me so great a sorrow to purify

me from my sins."

Let us take this saintly Queen for our example. While we do our duties, let us keep in mind the joys

that God will give us in Heaven.
