Let’s remember that love is not an emotion – it is a choice. Let us choose to love one another. Remember that the way someone presents him or herself is probably due to multiple things. A person can be in pain (physical or emotional) and that might affect how they interact with others. Before assuming that someone is simply being difficult, why not err on the side of giving them the benefit of the doubt. Asking them things like “Are you okay today?” or “Can I pray for you?” are Christ-like responses that can help us all grow together. Pray for each other proactively. Often we pray for someone when we hear they are struggling in one way or another. But it is much better to pray for folks always – make a list, pray for folks regularly, and then let them know that you are praying for them. And that includes your pastor and other leaders as well. These are the things that enable us at FBC to be an outpost of heaven. They are also ways that we can allow God to make us servants of his, and servants to those around us.

“Make Me a Servant!”

As I write this, I am still a bit in awe. It has been a very busy July – DeColores weekend of which I

was a part, FBC participating in the MCCC fun fair at Hackley Park, and having performances not once, but

twice (one on video, of course!) by Curt Anderson during our July 21 and July 28 morning services at FBC.

As I stated in both services, I was impressed not just by Curt’s talent (which is massive and amazing!), but

by his love for our Lord and his desire to promote not just his musical talent, but also to promote God’s

kingdom. In sum, despite his talent, Curt desires to be a servant, ministering to others and helping build

God’s kingdom.

My text in my brief message on Sunday morning was Philippians 2:5-11, which begins “In your

relationships with each other, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus:” (NIV) This is a call to all of us. As we

are all aware, we are embarking on a challenging period in the history of First Baptist. So what are some of

the ways that we can be servants in the weeks and months to come?

First, some specific events are on tap for the rest of this rapidly moving summer. We have an

outreach opportunity on August 17, when we will be reviving our Fun Fest after a 5 year hiatus,

from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. I would encourage any and all who are interested in this outreach event to let

Angie or Cindy know. We’d love to have a great turnout for this. In addition, we are sponsoring a Teens to

Tiaras event – Angie Gassman can give you more information on this if you want to help.

Second, there are some very general ways that we can be servants here at FBC. Here are some

of those ways.

Love one another. Remember that we are all brothers and sisters in Christ, but we are also all

different. Because of this, we offer all sorts of “challenges” to one another. Let’s remember

that love is not an emotion – it is a choice. Let us choose to love one another.

Remember that the way someone presents him or herself is probably due to multiple things. A

person can be in pain (physical or emotional) and that might affect how they interact with

others. Before assuming that someone is simply being difficult, why not err on the side of

giving them the benefit of the doubt. Asking them things like “Are you okay today?” or “Can I

pray for you?” are Christ-like responses that can help us all grow together.

Pray for each other proactively. Often we pray for someone when we hear they are struggling in

one way or another. But it is much better to pray for folks always – make a list, pray for folks

regularly, and then let them know that you are praying for them. And that includes your pastor

and other leaders as well.

These are the things that enable us at FBC to be an outpost of heaven. They are also ways that we can

allow God to make us servants of his, and servants to those around us.

From the front desk

The month of July flew by. We had a lot of activity here at First Baptist, and it is hard to believe we are starting into the month of

August. In the month of July we had Skylar Wezell’s graduation open house. There was a memorial service for Marge Hawkins.

Marge passed away earlier this year. Our bereavement committee did a wonderful job. This kind of service is one of hospitality.

Do we serve with our hearts open to bringing comfort at a difficult time in the lives of families?

The month of July also saw a couple of big projects undertaken. The Family Center floor was cleaned and nourished. This

process protects the surface of the floor. The Fellowship Hall floor was the next one to be tackled. That floor had to be stripped

and then waxed. Thank you to Joe Lihan and Ken Scott. Both of the floors in these areas look amazing. John Ramones did a

walk through with the Fire Department. Some areas that need to be taken care of were rusted doors in the Family Center and

Emergency lights that need to be replaced. John is getting a quote on what it will cost for these projects. John spends a lot of

time trying to make sure our building and property are taken care of. We need to have more hands that are willing to take on a

project. There is no way to calculate what the dollar saving are when volunteers take care of renew and repair.

Karen Hannon and Linda Wood count and record the donations on Sunday morning, Karolyn Rollenhagen takes care of counting

and recording the mortgage fund, and Linda Wood is doing double duty at this time and is our new Treasurer. It would be a

financial burden to pay an accountant for the services above. Thank you, ladies, for your faithful service.

On Wednesday July 31, Pastor Andy and Nancie painted the yellow Sunday school room purple. The yellow color of the room

was causing one of our Sunday school teachers to experience dizziness. This is truly a labor of love because the room is painted

in three tones of the color. You paint one area and then wait for it to dry before applying the strip of the next shade. Thank you

Pastor and Nancie.

Sunday School

We will be needing teachers and helpers for the start up of Sunday school this fall. They want to separate into two age groups.

If you would be willing to take a Sunday let Nancie Smith know.

August 15, 2019 Alex VanderWal will graduate from the Police Academy. On August 16, he will become a City of Muskegon

Police officer. Our pride and prayers go with Alex as he moves to this new chapter in his life.

Parslow Park Clean up went great. Preston was even out there ready to serve. Every time grandma put garbage in the bag, he would pick up a little stick or a blade of grass

and put it in the bag too.

The last park clean up this year will be September 15, 2019. We will be grilling

hotdogs again. And don’t forget participants get in on the drawing for the

Think of this daily!

Ephesians 6:10-18 (NIV) The Armor of God

10 Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. 11 Put on the full

armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes.

12 For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against

the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of

evil in the heavenly realms.13 Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day

of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything,

to stand. 14 Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate

of righteousness in place, 15 and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel

of peace. 16 In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming

arrows of the evil one. 17 Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.

18 And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind,

be alert and always keep on praying for

all the Lord’s people.
