OUR LITURGY The Israelites were eager for clear signs that the Messiah, promised by God, would come soon. They wanted to be rid of Roman rule and be a free nation once again. FROM THE DESK OF FR. MIKE “When John the Baptist heard in prison of the works of Christ, he sent his disciples to Jesus with this question, ‘Are you the one who is to come, or should we look for another?’ ” Why does John ask this question of Jesus? Isn’t he sure who Jesus is? Didn’t he point out Jesus to the apostles Andrew and John, and say “Behold the Lamb of God.” (Jn. 1:35-41)? Why then dose he question Jesus in today’s Gospel? Some believe it was because of John’s words from last week’s Gospel, when he spoke about the Messiah, “His winnowing fan is in his hand. He will clear his threshing floor and gather his wheat into his barn, but the chaff he will burn with unquenchable fire.” John expects the Messiah to be a great and powerful judge that sinners should run from with fear, for he has come to punish them! Their only recourse is to repent and now! John preached this, John believed it, and now what does he see the one who he pointed out doing? He actually eats with and welcomes sinners and tax collectors. He freely forgives sins (even the sins of those who do not ask for forgiveness), and welcomes back all of the lost sheep of Israel. Where is his anger, where is his quick judgment, and where is the great fire of damnation? Maybe, John is asking himself and Jesus, was I wrong, and maybe you are not truly the Messiah. But notice Jesus’ reply to John, to us, and to all those who doubt. “Go and tell John what you hear and see: the blind regain their sight, the lame walk, lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the poor have the good news proclaimed to them. And blessed is the one who takes no offense at me.” Jesus’ answer to John and those who doubt is look at what the Prophet Isaiah says about the Messiah (our first reading for the past two weeks) and am I not fulfilling all that is said? Stop looking at the Messiah the way you want him to be, rather see the one sent by God the way that God sees him! See Jesus not through your eyes, but through His and with the Wisdom and Grace of the Holy Spirit. And if some times that becomes a problem or causes doubt within us, just remember the words from St. James’ Letter (today’s 2nd Reading) “Be patient, brothers and sisters.” This 3rd week of Advent when we change our Advent focus to the 1st Coming of Christ at Bethlehem, we will conduct 3 Evenings of Prayer and Reflection-focusing on the Great O Antiphons of the Canticle of Mary (The Magnificat). These antiphons are taken from Evening Prayer, of the

Liturgy of the Hours, for the evenings of Dec.17th to Dec. 23rd. This promises to be wonderful evenings and we ask you to try and make them this Tues, Weds, and Thurs. Evenings beginning at 8PM. On Thursday Evening we will offer the Sacrament of Reconciliation. We will also hear Confessions at the usual times during the week (Mon. Weds. and Friday after the 7& 9 AM Masses, Saturday Mornings after the 8 AM Mass and Saturday Afternoon from 4-4:45 PM) and on Tuesday Evening December 21st from 7-7:45 PM. The Schedule of Masses for Christmas Eve and Day are: Friday Dec. 24th-4 PM (Upper and Lower Church), 5:30 PM and 10:30 PM. Saturday Dec. 25th- 7AM, 9AM, 10:30 AM, and 12 NOON. There will be NO EVENING MASS ON CHRISTMAS DAY! As you know from experience, many people come to Mass for Christmas Eve and Day who do not come to Mass on a regular basis. At times, this is trying, and our first impulse may be one of anger or quick judgment. However, we must remember that these people are also our brothers and sisters and we must welcome them to the family’s house-our Church. Perhaps our welcome may convince them to come more often. If not, we still showed them Christ working through us. So welcome our family members who are not always with us, be patient with them, and of course pray for them that they can see what we see. If you have not received an offering envelope for Christmas, and would like to use one, some can be found on the windowsills in the Church. Please remember that our Christmas Collection is one of the most important collections of the year. So please be as generous as you can, and if you are able, please make your Christmas gift to your Church one that reflects this season of giving and will help meet our end of year bills. I know this will happen, because the people of St. Joseph’s are always wonderful in supporting their parish. This is especially seen in the increased giving that so many of you have done as a result of our last appeal, and we are truly grateful. Thank you to all who have increased their weekly or monthly offering your generous giving is greatly appreciated. As always, thank you for all you do for St. Joseph’s and may God bless you and your families during this Advent and Christmas Season!

School News During this holy season, St. Joseph School, in cooperation with Mrs. Steeneck and Sue Byrnes Realty in Sayville, is participating in Operation Gratitude. Operation Gratitude is a program whereby comfort items, such as soap, tissues, and phone cards, are collected and sent to our troops. In addition, the third and fourth grade students are utilizing their computer skills to write letters to the soldiers. The response has been overwhelming with students eager to participate in spreading good will to our troops abroad.

RESPECT LIFE

Here’s some (in case you need it) logical evidence for defending pre-born persons: 1) The Declaration of Independence is our guiding principle of

“self-evident truths.” For human rights protection in the proclamation “all men are created equal with the unalienable right to life…” All men is the generic term for men & women, born & pre-born. Human life is created when it begins, at conception.

2) A “person” was redefined in 1 USC 1 by Congress in 1947 to include “individuals” to protect the human rights of all humans because Nazi & Communists had justified genocide of unwanted humans by denying them personhood.

3) The United Nations’ Declaration of the Rights of the Child” includes a pre-born child’s right to life.

4) DNA proof of individuality of the pre-born was presented by the most qualified geneticists & embryologists & would have been accepted for any & every other human being.

5) Congress defined as “persons” corporations & other non-human entities. Except for Roe v. Wade, the Supreme Court has deferred to Congress and agreed that everyone & everything defined by Congress to be a person is a person. Indeed, Congress alone has the power by Article 5 of the 14th Amendment to enforce the provisions of the 14th Amendment. Congress Passed 1 USC 1, defining individual humans as persons, and thus should not be denied by the Supreme Court.

In conclusion, Roe v. Wade created an exception to personhood where none had existed or could exist. The Supreme Court must recognize the right to life and equal protection for all those who are, in fact, human beings regardless of age, size, health or condition of dependency. As Dr. Seuss said, “A persons a person, no matter how small.” Celebrate Life, Mar/Apr 2004

Even Used Inkjet Cartridges, Have Their Uses

We have found a way to help St Joseph and keep those complicated pieces of plastic, metal and printed circuit boards out of the land fill. Drop them off (in a plastic baggie) when you come to mass. We will send them to a company who reuses them and gives the parish a bounty for each. One note, to clear confusion, if it is larger than a fist, it is not an inkjet cartridge!!!
