FROM THE DESK OF FR. MIKE

Remember to keep in your prayers Deacon Lachlan Cameron and his classmates who will be ordained a Priest for the Diocese of Rockville Centre this coming Saturday at St. Agnes Cathedral. Next Sunday he will celebrate his Mass of Thanksgiving at his home parish of Holy Spirit in New Hyde Park. The following Sunday June 22nd Fr. Lachlan will celebrate the 12 Noon Mass here at St. Joseph’s with a parish reception to follow; all are invited! To have your Fathers, living or deceased, remembered at our Father’s Day Masses and for the remainder of the month of June, please use the envelopes found in your packets or on the window sills of the church. Also remember to mark your calendars for the Summer Family Festival July 16-20th. Come join your parish family for all of the fun, great food, rides, the entertainment, and so much more. And don’t forget the Grand Prize Raffle, the Nightly Basket Raffles, and the Nightly 50/50 Raffles. The Family Festival a great way to have some fun, support our beautiful parish and not have to spend a fortune on Gas. Let us close this week with the opening prayer for

the Mass for Vocations, and we ask that we all pray for vocations to the Priesthood, Diaconate,

and the Religious Life.

Father, in your plan for our salvation you provide shepherds for your people. Fill your Church with the spirit of courage and love. Raise up worthy ministers for your altars and ardent but gentle

servants of the gospel. Grant this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with

you and the Holy Spirit, one God for ever and ever. Amen

God Bless you always! Fr. Mike

Each time I read this Gospel story I am always filled with awe! All Jesus has to do is walk through an area, and Matthew sitting at his customs post leaves everything behind and follows Jesus. Wow, I wish I could do that, follow Jesus just like one of the Apostles, to just leave every-thing behind, and be totally devoted to Christ. How easy it must have been for Matthew and the other Apostles to follow Jesus? But was it really that easy or was it that Jesus knew the real person Mathew was (deep inside) and knew that he was looking for true meaning in his life. Think of what Matthew did, he left every-thing behind: his way of life, his job that made him a great deal of money, and even made himself subject to arrest, because he left his post and left Rome without its tax money. Obviously something was at work in Matthew that made him ready to follow Jesus and stay with Him even until the end and beyond. Keep in mind that despite what is written in the text, Matthew’s conversion was not so easy, even if it happened on the spot as we see in today’s Gospel. It still took a lot for Matthew to respond and leave it all behind. As it was for Matthew, Peter, James, John and so many others, so it is with us. As we saw in last week’s Gospel we are to follow Jesus from our heart and soul, not just in our heads or merely on our lips. To do so, takes a lot of work on our part and on the part of the Holy Spirit, who constantly calls us to Christ, who constantly calls us to the Father. So don’t lose heart (or soul) and do know we can and do follow Jesus like an Apostle. Wow, isn’t that great! And this means that we should not let anything stand in our way from fol-lowing Jesus and giving our all to Him. Especially if you think you are not perfect. Remember what Jesus says to the Pharisees; “Those who are well do not need a physician, but the sick do. Go and learn the meaning of the words; ‘I desire mercy, not sacrifice.’ I did not come to call the righteous but sinners.” Also as a warning to us, we must not act like the Pharisees when it comes to those who are truly seeking Jesus, maybe after leading an unholy or sinful life. We must not stand in their way or judge them. We must never forget that Jesus counts on us to act like Him and help bring those who are sick (spiritually sick that is) to health and the spiritual Doctor: JESUS CHRIST!

Plans for our Golf Outing are going well. Please see the ad in the bulletin for hole sponsorships, raffles, dinner or a day of golf. This year we are holding this event on Monday, July 21st. We look forward to seeing you either on the golf course or at a relaxing dinner with many raffles. Our Parent's Association is sponsoring two nights of baseball at Ducks Stadium in Central Islip. Tickets are available through the school office. They are for either evening June 16th or 17th. This is our last event for this school year. Bring your family to the first event of the summer vacation! Tickets are $10 each on a first-come, first-serve basis. Registration is on-going for the 2008-2009 school year. RESPECT LIFE Dear Readers: According to Kathleen Galla-gher, Editor, NYS Pro-Life Reporter, this is the latest on RHAPP. The 2008 New York State legislative session is now winding down & will

recess at the end of June. The RHAPP (Reproductive Health & Privacy Protection) bill was never introduced in the Assem-bly & has not moved in the Senate. It is unknown how much priority Governor David Paterson will give to this issue in the coming months & into the 2009 legislative session. The work that has been done this year in opposition to the RHAPP bill has been unprecedented. Petitions, postcards, face-to-face meetings with elected officials – the pressure has been consistent & legislators have taken notice. More than 31,000 electronic messages of opposition were sent through the Catholic Advocacy Network to state lawmakers. Letters to newspaper editors were seen all over the state. Many thou-sands of petitions were brought up to Albany by local right-to-life groups on the John R Mawn Memorial Right-to-Life bus, sponsored by St Regis K of C. Pro-life advocates should take pride in the work that has been accomplished on this issue over the past year. While it appears that the bill will not come to a vote before the session recesses in late June, the issue will be back and pro-life efforts will need to be strengthened & increased in the future, & we will alert you at that time. Now, here’s update on another abortion-related activity in the 2007-2008 New York State Legislative session – The sec-ond round of stem cell research funding has been announced. The Empire State’s Stem Cell Board (ESSCB which was cre-ated in the NYS 2007-2008 state budget) has a plan for how it will commit the state’s $600 million investment in stem cell research The plan may be viewed by going to www.stemcell.ny.gov, & then clicking on the link that says “ESCCB Strategic Plan under “Program updates.” Among the specifics of this plan: >Permits NYS funding for the creation of new human embry-onic stem cell lines, going beyond federal policy in encourag-ing the destruction of human embryos for research; >Aggressively pursues human embryo research, both with IVF-created frozen embryos & with embryos created solely for research; > Encourages researchers to engage in human embryonic stem cell research by funding infrastructure, facili-ties & resources specifically dedicated to this purpose. The deadline to make comments on this plan is June 13. Visit www.stemcell.ny.gov & follow the links as mentioned above. We as taxpayers have every right & duty to object to the spending of taxpayer dollars in this fashion. Your letters, e-mails, & calls to your state legislators are needed again. SOME GOOD NEWS! Our seminarian, Deacon Lachlan Cameron will, on June 14, be ordained a priest for the Rockville Centre Diocese. Father Lachlan will celebrate Mass here at St. Joseph’s on June 22nd at 12 noon. All are invited to Fr Carew Hall afterwards. He is quoted in the LI Catholic as saying that he looks forward to the opportunity to be in a par-ish as a priest “to be around God’s people, leading them closer to God.” Well said, Father Lachlan!

Ministries Appeal Update The Diocese of Rockville Centre would like to thank all those who have made a sacrifice by

making a gift to the Catholic Ministries Appeal. If you have not had an opportunity to make a gift to the appeal or have been waiting to make a pledge, please complete the pledge envelope in the back of the church and place

it in the collection basket

Can you help those in need?

One of our goals is to have every family participate in this Appeal by responding with a YES or a NO. We are hopeful that every family in our parish & diocese has responded to this call for sacrifice. Our goal has been based on every family making an equal sacrifice, not an equal gift. Look at what God has given to you and your family and consider the gift you can give to help those in need here on Long Island. Only you can decide what that gift will be. If you have not yet responded, please consider what you can do to the best of your ability to help our parish reach those in need.

Our Goal Is $89,616

One project in particular that has been completed is the restoration of the stained glass windows from the original church. This endeavor alone cost about $20,000. The windows have been installed in the elevator lobby and they are breathtaking! Please take the time to visit the lobby and experience the beauty of these windows. We encourage everyone to please consider supporting this very important piece of our history. We are still awaiting the permits in order to complete the move of the Religious Education Office. Patience has become our middle name!!

If you have not yet done so, please make a pledge or one time donation. During these tough times, we are all struggling financially, yet it is important to continue to support the parish of St. Joseph as best we can. If you have not been able to do so, perhaps you will be in a better position to help us when you receive your Economic Stimulus Check. We thank you for all that you do for St. Joseph’s.

Yes Fr. Mike, I would like to help finish the St. Joseph’s Restoration Projects and Build for the Future!
