How much does the Joy of Christmas cost you and your family? Does is it cost you hundreds or thousands of dollars to get the right presents for family and friends or does the cost grow with the stress of navigating lines and crowds at the mall? Do you curse the internet speed while on-line? The advent sea-son is a preparation for Christmas whether you are Catholic or not; however, the way one prepares for Christmas and the gift received and given at Christmas is very different depending on one’s faith perspective.

As children we immaturely focus on what we are get-ting and so with great anticipation look forward to the unwrap-ping rituals of the Christmas day, or season. Hopefully, as adults and parents, we would enter the season with a more spir-itual appreciation for the gift being revealed in Jesus, Emmanu-el, God dwelling with us and revealing the divine to us. With this understanding, we should slowly continue to bring the next generation into understanding of this truth.

The second part of season is preparing gifts for others. Often the most powerful gifts are ones we thoughtfully create give out of care and love for the other. Intentional giving from who you are is a powerful truth for adults to live and for us to teach our young ones. Christmas is all about Jesus bring into the world divine life, the essence of God, for our salvation. He ful-fills our greatest need by entering the world and embarking on His revelation of the pascal mystery.

During the excitement and rush of the Advent season, don’t forget to prepare yourself and your family for the truth of this season and the next. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In an addition, the bulletin for the first Sunday of Advent provided a summary of the finances for the last fiscal year with regards to the parish operations. To recap:

Total Income: $760,330.00 Total Expenses: $877,254.00 Net Loss: $116,924.00 Mortgage balance: $439424.41

The deficit last year was paid from our savings which was accumulated from the sale of the old rectory. I am uncom-fortable with the parish using up its savings for operational ex-penses and so this financial situation must be changed. In my philosophy, savings should be used for emergency repairs, plant improvements, or evangelical investments for the future of the parish. Operationally, we need to live within our means; our expenses should not exceed Sunday donations. In response to this situation, the team is working hard to reduce expenses. The budget for this fiscal year cuts the net loss by half. Unfortunate-ly, if the income remains the same some service would need to be sacrificed to meet rising expenses. During this advent season, reflect on what you are giving to Christ through his Church. Traditionally we are called to give 10% of our income as a spiritual goal and obligation to God, how can you move towards achieving that spiritual good. I already give 10%; however the parish is in need, pleases ask Christ what your Sunday commitment should be this next year and join me in giving more to the collection. I am committing an additional $10 to the collection every week starting this Sunday. What will be your commitment?

¿Cuánto te cuesta a ti y a tu familia la alegría de la Navidad? ¿Te cuesta cientos o miles de dólares obtener los rega-los correctos para la familia y amigos o aumenta el costo con el estrés de navegar por las líneas y las multitudes en el centro comercial? ¿Maldices la velocidad del internet mientras estás en línea? La temporada de adviento es una preparación para la Navidad, seas católico o no; sin embargo, la forma en que uno se prepara para Navidad y el regalo recibido y entregado en Navidad es muy diferente dependiendo de la perspectiva de fe de uno. Cuando somos niños, nos enfocamos inmaduramente en lo que estamos obteniendo y, por lo tanto, esperamos con gran anticipación los rituales de desenvolver los regalos del día o temporada navideña. Ojala, como adultos y padres, entraremos en la temporada con una apreciación más espiritual por el don que se revela en Jesús, Emmanuel, Dios que habita con nosotros y nos revela lo divino. Con este entendimiento, debemos continuar lentamente para llevar a la próxima genera-ción a comprender esta verdad. La segunda parte de la temporada es preparar regalos para otros. Durante esta temporada de adviento, reflexiona sobre lo que le estás dando a Cristo a través de su Iglesia. Tradicional-mente estamos llamados a dar el 10% de nuestros ingresos como una meta espiritual y una obligación para con Dios, ¿cómo puede avanzar hacia el logro de ese bien espiritual? Ya doy 10%; Sin embargo, la parroquia necesita ayuda, por favor pregúntele a Cristo cuál debería ser su compromiso dominical este próximo año y únase a mí para dar más a la colecta. Estoy comprometiendo $10 adicionales a la colecta cada semana a partir de este domingo. ¿Cuál será tu compromise?

They will begin on December 16 at 6:30 pm with a

novena of Posadas and closing on December 23 with

a Christmas dinner. Starting with a Mass at 5:30

following with the Posada and ending in the Parish

Hall with a Pot-Luck Christmas dinner to share.

Please bring a dish to share.

The Posadas begin nine days before celebrating Christmas and remember the journey of the Virgin Mary and Saint Joseph to Bethlehem.

PRISON AND JAIL MINISTRY

“For I was Hungry and you gave me food...in prison and you visited me”. Are you called to a special ministry, to visit our forgotten community members? Have you ever thought of visiting incarcerated adults and juveniles in our communities’ prisons or jails? The office for life, Peace and Justice will be conduct-ing two information and orientation sessions for prison/jail ministry on Thursday January 9th 2020. Session 1 will be from 11:30 am to 1:30 pm. Session 2 will be from 5:30 pm to 7:30 pm. Both sessions will be in San Mateo Conference room at the Diocesan Pastoral Center at 3888 Paducah Drive in San Diego. Simbang Gabi (Filipino for “Night Masses”) is traditionally a pre-dawn novena of Masses from December 16-24 culminating at Christ-mas midnight mass. This tradition expresses the love of the people for God through His Mother, Mary, as they gather in prayerful

anticipation of the Christmas miracle. Simbang Gabi draws on Filipino Catholics in the parishes to carry out these special gatherings and to share their religious tradition and culture with the whole parish family and community. VOCATION MINISTRY

St. Stephen's is forming a Vocation Ministry! The main focus of this ministry will be to pray for, affirm, and bring awareness to vocations. We hope to nurture vocations through an array of fun and exciting parish-wide activities. If you would like to get involved in this worth-while ministry, please come to our inaugural meeting, today, Sunday, December 15th 10:15 AM. We will meet at the fountain in front of the parish office. Hope to see you there!

PILGRIM CHALICE FOR VOCATIONS

St. Stephen's Pilgrim Chalice (blessed and used by St. John Paul II) will begin circulation in January! The Chalice will be used at Mass and passed to a family at the conclusion of Mass. The family will keep the Chalice in their home for a period of time in order to pray for vocations. Sign-ups for the Pilgrim Chalice will be taken at the hospitality table after Mass. Don't miss out on this incredible opportunity of grace for your family!

CÁLIZ DE PEREGRINO PARA LAS VOCACIONES

¡El cáliz de peregrino de San Esteban (bendecido y utilizado por San Juan Pablo II) comenzará a circular en enero! El cáliz se usará en la misa y se pasará a una familia al finalizar la misa. La familia mantendrá el cáliz en su hogar durante un período de tiempo para rezar por las vocaciones. Las inscripciones para el cáliz de peregrino se tomarán en la mesa de hospi-talidad después de la misa. ¡No se pierda esta in-creíble oportunidad de gracia para su familia!
