From little things, big things grow. And that’s certainly the case at Bakewell Primary School. The school gates first opened to Palmerston families in 1999 with a humble enrolment of 168 students. It has since grown into the Northern Territory’s largest primary school, boasting a cohort of over 800 students.

This year, Bakewell is celebrating their biggest milestone yet, commencing 2016 as an Independent Public School. “Being granted Independent status is important as it paves the way for embedding excellence further into everything we do,” says Principal Paul Nyhuis.

“AS A STAFF AND SCHOOL

COMMUNIT Y WE HAVE CREATED

A STRONG SCHOOL AND

ORGANISATIONAL CULTURE BUILT ON

POSIT IVE RELATIONSHIPS AND HIGH

EXPEC TATIONS, WITH A RELENTLESS

FOCUS ON QUALIT Y TEACHING AND

LEARNING."

Appointed Principal of Bakewell in 2013, Mr Nyhuis says becoming an Independent school is the culmination of a three-year commitment to school improvement. “As a staff and school community we have created a strong school and organisational culture built on positive relationships and high expectations and a relentless focus on quality teaching and learning. We have made some really positive gains.”

A high level of academic rigour is embedded into the school’s program, which is further supported by a number of exciting innovations such as an academic advancement, learning enrichment, information communication learning technologies, Asian language and guided reading. “We have a strong focus on numeracy and literacy and have set specific achievement targets for students in the areas of Maths and English,” says the Principal. “What we’re doing here is providing students with the opportunities to excel.” Specialist subjects at Bakewell Primary include Science, Visual Arts and Physical Education.

Bakewell primary accepts students from Preschool to Year 6 from the surrounding suburbs of Bakewell, Johnson and Gunn. It has excellent resources and facilities, while spacious and well-maintained school grounds provide students with the opportunity to play and socialise in a safe and child friendly environment.

AVID Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) is a program that provides students with academic, social and emotional skills that empower them to achieve lifelong success. This is a core focus at Bakewell Primary School and we have been teaching these invaluable skills for student success since 2013 with great results. By using these success skills daily, students become determined learners who take responsibility for their learning.

LEARNING ENRICHMENT CLASSThe Learning Enrichment Class (LEC) provides students with accelerated teaching to help them improve their academic success. Consisting of 23 students ranging from Year 3 to Year 6, this innovative class encourages students to see themselves as successful learners.

LANGUAGE AND CULTURAL PROGRAM The student experience is enhanced with a Cultural Awareness program including Mandarin classes (Upper Primary), as part of a partnership between Bakewell Primary School with the NT School Of Languages. The aim of this partnership is to develop students’ ability to understand language and culture and communicate effectively across cultures.

ICLT IPAD PROGRAMStudents are equipped with their own powerful learning tool in this exciting new Information Communication Learning Technology (ICLT) program for Year 4 and Academic Advancement classes. The integration of iPads for each student creates engaging learning experiences through interactivity and supports our ongoing focus on student outcomes and 21st Century learning.

ACADEMIC ADVANCEMENT CLASSThis new initiative offers students from Year 4 – 6 academic advancement and extension programs to cater for their advanced needs. In this class of 27 students, learning is personalised, aligning individual learning needs, strengths, interests and goals. A collaborative culture ensures students are able to work together in small focus groups.

GUIDED READING PROGRAMSupporting our focus on excellence in literacy, all students from Transition to Year 6 benefit from a Guided Reading Program. This is small-group reading instruction designed to provide differentiated teaching that supports students in developing reading proficiency. We have measured significant improvement in student reading outcomes since the program was introduced in 2015.

SCHOOL COUNSELLING AND WELLBEING PROGRAMAt the beginning of 2016 Bakewell introduced a School Counselling and Wellbeing program. This coincided with the appointment of a full time School Counsellor; a first for a Northern Territory Primary School. This new program enhances our strong focus on student health and wellbeing by providing individual, group and whole school support.

Taminmin’s 2015 Year 12 highest ATAR student, Cheya Clarke, commenced at Taminmin in year 7 ensuring a smooth and continuous quality learning experience. Cheya has taken advantage of the many opportunities at Taminmin such as the Leading Learner program, International and Interstate travel, participating in the school musical and following her sporting interests.

Principal Miriam McDonald said that Taminmin College is the only Independent Public School that provides a seamless learning environment from years 7 to 12. Like Cheya students can enjoy all of their secondary schooling on the one campus.

The College includes a Vocational Education and Training (VET) section and is the only school in the Northern Territory with an agricultural facility. Miriam is also proud of the 98% NTCET completion rate achieved this year.Students from year 5 can enter the Young Scholars program at Taminmin. This enables students to undertake challenging and innovative experiences at the college as well as assuring them a place in the Leading Learner or Aspire programs from year 7.

Taminmin College provides success for all students with a range of pathways to access employment and higher education.

rent is right for customers and their businesses. It’s this extraordinary customer focus that sets United apart. What’s more, United has remained loyal to its long-standing customers, and promises to do so for new ones. The organisation’s vision is for Darwin and the long-term, not the short-term activity brought on by big industrial visitors. It is, first and foremost, a customer driven business.

Branch Manager Mick Lovatt credits a good team dynamic and the resourcefulness of workers to United’s success and reputation. Though the team is relatively new, employees have the required knowledge and skill set enabling them to work at the top of their game. With branches in each state and a Head Office in Perth, the team can call on United nationally if required.

Slight internal business changes have helped United to refocus, and reassess what customers want. The organisation understands there is always room for improvement, and is in the process of developing a customer satisfaction survey. By knowing exactly what customers want and think, the team will continue to be able to deliver the best possible service in their industry.

This year has seen an increase in designated family rooms; spaces that don’t revolve around the direction of the TV or feature computers or any hi-fi equipment in them, just a quiet cosy refuge in which to relax or to gather in for undistracted family time. The secret of these family rooms is in the furnishing and decoration of them. Seating and scale is the key to getting these spaces right so you need to make sure there is enough seating for each member of the family including any furry animal members who are likely to join you without cramping the room or making it feel overstuffed. Next, focus on lighting to set the mood

of the room. By having various lighting sources you will get the maximum use of the room so I recommend bright ceiling lights to provide enough light for board games as well as wall sconces with a lower wattage globe and then a mix of floor and table lamps in bright and soft lighting for reading as well as casual after dinner chats. Any colour scheme can work in these spaces but the tone of colours should be soft and nurturing. Some popular choices at the moment are serenity blue, with tan and white. Deep teal with yellow and grey or traditional antique white with muted timber finishes. Try it at home today, your family will thank you for it.

First of all, what is Negative Gearing? Negative Gearing (on property) occurs when the cost of owning a rental property outweighs the income it generates each year. This creates a taxable loss, which can normally be offset against other income including your wage or salary, to provide tax savings.Let's say for example you own a rental property generating $25,000 in rent each year. The costs of holding the property, including mortgage interest, come to $30,000. This gives you a taxable loss of $5,000, which you can use to reduce the tax payable on things such as your salary. By the way, this is a simplification and should not be construed as financial advice…just making that clear. But Negative Gearing does not just apply to the property market. It can also be applied to investments in the stock market, and this is something that is being overlooked in this current tax grab proposal. Property is not the investment class that benefits the most from the Capital Gains Tax discount. The majority (around 60 percent) of capital gains are sourced from shares, while real estate investments account for just 26 percent of taxable individuals. And who are these individuals. Well seven out of ten property investors who benefit from negative gearing earn a taxable income of less than $80,001 per annum! Plus the data shows that the majority of investors own only one property and this has not significantly changed

over time. So these are people who are trying to make a difference for their future and their retirement – people who have decided they would rather plan for their own future than be another burden on the public purse in retirement. The rationale for the current 50 percent discount on ‘capital gains’ is to ensure that only ‘real’ capital gains are taxed – not nominal gains. If this is reduced and nominal capital gains are taxed without a discount, then investors will be taxed on a gain they have not yet made!Even Labor’s own tax expert said that Negative Gearing was a good thing to retain. The Henry Tax Review (2010) noted “the current tax advantages available to highly geared investment can operate as a subsidy to renters by placing downward pressure on rents.”It is frustrating that the ‘experts’ in Canberra look at the Eastern seaboard of Australia as being representative of the entire Australian property market and make decisions based on what is happening only in Sydney and Melbourne. They talk about rental demand and supply shortage and apply this to all areas. Well in the Northern Territory we don’t have the same supply shortage as Sydney, and we don’t have the same rental demands as Sydney. We are unique and we require legislative treatment that recognises that we are in a different position, as is Western Australia, as is Tasmania and so on.So what would happen under the Labor modelling? Well firstly, as was evidenced when Keating removed Negative Gearing in 1985, rents will skyrocket. If an investor no longer has the ability to write down losses they will need to ensure their property is ‘positively geared’ and that will mean ensuring the rental return is higher than all the collective outgoings including mortgage payments and maintenance costs. Secondly investors will start deserting the property market, probably for shares or other areas where tax breaks will remain. This will mean a large number of ‘existing properties’ will return to the sales market and it will rapidly devalue the capital worth of the family home. At the same time new developments will rise

in price as they will be the only ones that will attract tax discounts and therefore will attract the interest of investors. But what happens to these ‘new’ properties when an investor wants to sell? No other investor will be interested because that ‘new’ property will now be an ‘existing’ property and it will not have any tax incentives attached, and it will therefore be diminished in its sales value. And thirdly, as the investor market shrinks, and with it the available rental market, and rents rapidly rise, this will put additional pressure on Governments to provide social and welfare housing as those on lower incomes and welfare benefits will be quickly driven further out of the private housing market. The impact of this proposal will be felt very broadly across all sectors of the housing market and not just confined to people who have chosen to invest in a property.Blind Freddy could see the massive amount of damage this ludicrous proposal would have on the property market – but apparently some of our politicians and their loony mates cannot!

There’s been a fair bit of debate in the CarAdvice office lately about which iteration of the all-new 2016 Ford Mustang represents the best bang for your buck. While the 2.3-litre turbo-four is themore economical option, the naturally aspirated 5.0-litre V8 promises to deliverthe true spirit of the nameplate.

And that’s just the point. Owning a Ford Mustang is about buying into a legend, one that went mainstream after the 1968 hit movie Bullitt, when the ultra-cool Steve McQueen tore up the screen in his 1968 Ford Mustang 390 GT 2+2.

McQueen’s popularity shot to superstar status overnight, while the Mustang became an American automotive icon.

For me though, the bond with the original ‘Pony car’ started a couple of years before the movie’s release, the day my old man borrowed his business partner’s 1966 Mustang import for a weekend trip with the family from Sydney to Canberra.

As you might imagine, this was a huge step up from our bogstandard family Falcon, because even before Bullitt, the affordable Ford Mustang had already become a blue-collar hero in the States, especially if it swapped the lazy straight-six for the infinitely more charismatic 289 cubic-inch (4.7-litre) small-block V8 engine, as ours surely did.

And therein lies my position in the 2.3-litre turbo-four v 5.0-litre V8 argument. It’s pretty simple really: if you’re going to drive a Mustang, be sure it makes all the right noises.

And that also seems to be the consensus among the 4000-plus Aussie buyers who have already put down deposits on the new sixth-generation Mustang, with around 80 per cent opting for the V8-powered GT model, and the

remaining 20 per cent choosing the fourcylinder version.

Enthusiasts will demand the V8. But for those more frugal buyers, the turbo-four will seem like the perfect package. I get it, I really do. You still get the great looks and decent performance, but above all you get outstanding value for money.

The entry-level EcoBoost Fastback can be had from $45,990 (before on-road costs) – a substantial discount over the $57,490 full-strength GT, by any reckoning.

Underneath, it’s a different story. For argument’s sake, let’s leave any discussion around the Mustang’s exhaust note aside for the moment and focus on the headline performance figures.

The heavy-hitting V8 makes 306kW of power at 6500rpm and 530Nm of torque at 4250rpm, with combined fuel economy estimated at 12.37 litres per 100km on premium 98 RON for the manual and automatic.

The more frugal four-cylinder version generates a not too shabby 233kW at 5600-5700rpm and 432Nm at 3000rpm, while consuming a claimed 9.04L/100km of standard 91 RON combined for the manual and 9.4L/100km for the automatic.

So on paper, there’s no contest when it comes to engine displacement. The GT has got its four-cylinder sibling well and truly beaten in that department. But what the turbo ‘Stang looses in good ole-fashioned cubic inches, it more than makes up for at the petrol bowser. Of course, enthusiasts won’t give a hoot about fuel economy when it comes to their new Mustang. For those buyers, it’s all about thunder and lightning – the same as it’s always been with American muscle cars.

Powerful words from anonymous blogger, (and my new facebook obsession) Man who has it all. Yes, you read that right: MAN who has it all. For too long, us working mums have been privy to such helpful advice as how to achieve work/life balance, pack the perfect lunch box and dress for our face shape, all while men have been left hanging. Well no more. Describing himself as: “a busy dad with 3 children, an awesome wife and a hectic full time job”, Man who has it all is just an ordinary guy doling out the same advice to men that women often get. “To all independent men. Don’t be afraid of you independence! It’s ok to be a man and be independent. Some women actually find it attractive.”Today’s debate: CAN working men be good fathers? What effect does their choice to continue their career have on their children?”Funny right? But perhaps not so funny (or more funny) when you realise that this is the type of

advice that women get. All. The. Time. But why do we listen to it? Why do we want it? Why is it out there at all? Why do women, to a greater extent than men, search for and covet the elusive work/life balance: “having it all”? Perhaps it’s because the woman’s role has changed so much in the last few decades that our heads are still spinning. We have careers, aspirations of our own, separate to those of our families and social groups. We want to raise children, run marathons, be the perfect domestic goddess, conquer the business world, save the whales, feed the hungry. And we can. I firmly believe that we can “have it all”. So what’s stopping us?I think the answer lies in the wisdom of Man who has it all. “Working dad? Instead of asking your wife to help out with the housework, why not get up 2 hours earlier and do it yourself?”While I sit here at my computer, I glance over to Mr CH, vacuuming with Miss E strapped to his chest it dawns on me: having it all doesn’t mean doing it all.

Nestled on the water’s edge, Crab Claw Island Resort is a relaxing escape from the everyday. The complex has elevated cabins connected by walkways through the trees and palm gardens, refreshing swimming pools, an elevated open restaurant with views across the harbour, boat ramp, wildlife and natural beauty galore.Crab Claw Island’s ‘Breezes’ restaurant is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, serving a wide selection of tasty, al a carte meals. The fully licensed bar holds a selection of wines, icy cold beers and soft drinks that will quench the thirst and cleanse the pallet of any weary traveller.Lovely ‘outback NT’ experience. Crab Claw is one of those places to just relax and dwindle away time, either fishing or relaxing by

the pool. We stayed here for 6 nights, but could have easy stayed longer. The staff are so relaxed and friendly, nothing is a bother.Crab Claw Island is the perfect place for family getaway… the beaches are pristine, white quartz sand – perfect for sandcastles, the harbour is calm and full of fish – making first time fishing experiences full of all the right kinds of memories, the swimming pools are fenced with child proof gates and both pools have safe access, the restaurant has a special kids menu with health options as well as the ‘traditional’ holiday fare, high-chairs and knives and forks just the right size for little hands. We have two accommodation options to suit families who need a bit more space. Our Family Cabins are set on the rear of the main walkway, approximately 15m from the beach. They are twice the size

of our standard cabins and fitted with a double and four single beds, a dining table and chairs, large refrigerator, and en-suite bathroom facilities. Alternatively ‘The house’ is at ground level with absolute beach frontage. It has two bedrooms, each with a double and two single beds; a large balcony with a gate, dining table and chairs and BBQ.
