Enhancing productivity in the business world

In an office block, more than any other type of building, time is money. Elevators and escalators have a key role toplay in ensuring the smooth, efficient, cost-effective andsafe flow of people into and out of the building, and fromfloor to floor.

is particularly high in the mornings, evenings and lunchtimes, when largenumbers of people use the elevators orescalators to reach their workplace, leave the building, travel to therestaurant floor or descend to theunderground parking area. However, the actual situation can bemuch more complex:

■ If there is only one company in thebuilding, inter-floor traffic is usuallyheavier than in a building withseveral companies

■ Fixed working hours (compared toflexible) create shorter, heavier peaks

■ Combinations of companies andworking hours lead to furthercomplications

■ The presence of non-smoking floorscan increase inter-floor traffic tosmoking areas or the groundfloor/outside

need to optimize available space. They demand a wide choice of attractivefinishes and expect an integratedsolution that can be customized.Furthermore, they are increasingly usingelevators and escalators as aestheticelements in their building designs.

Architects

carefully watch total lifecycle cost, maintainability and energy consumption.Equipment reliability is of prime importance – an out-of-order elevator or escalatorreflects badly on them. And they are keen to increase the rental value of theirbuilding - and hence their revenues.

Building owners

advise building owners on the bestchoice of elevator/escalator for theirbuilding and have their focus firmly seton the reliability and capacity of theirrecommendation so that it can handlepeak traffic conditions efficiently.

Contractors

and their visitors expect prompt arrivalof an elevator at the touch of a button. They want to reach the required floorquickly, comfortably and safely.Transportation of people with reducedmobility is a key issue, as is wheelchairaccess.

Designed to be ecologically sound

KONE elevators and escalators embody KONE’s commitment to reuse and recycleas many products and components as possible, and are amongst the industry’smost environmentally sound transportation concepts.

The environmental impact ‘from birth toretirement’ of an elevator or escalator, including the total energy consumptionand the use of natural resources, is fullytaken into account by using varioustools such as Life Cycle Assessment. This is an objective evaluation of theenvironmental impact of a product, from the extraction and selection of rawmaterials, to its assembly, transportation, distribution, use and final safe disposal.

A product with a long lifetime such asan elevator or escalator is ecological inprinciple if it is designed well from thebeginning. KONE uses Life CycleAssessment as a development tool.It can help when choosing recyclable,energy-friendly materials.

Other important trends are avoidingor reducing the use of paint or otherhighly polluting processes; designingmore structure rather than using morematerial; and striving to reduce thetotal energy consumption.

KONE is committed to develop energy-efficient products. In its elevators, for example, the power consumptionof the KONE EcoDisc is only half thatneeded by comparable conventionalsystems, saving the cost of thousandsof kilowatt-hours per year.

Significant cost savings are also achievedby the use of lower duty risers and fusesmade possible by a peak startingcurrent of just 30 to 40 percent ofthat of equivalent traction units. The absence of oil removes the riskof soil contamination and fire that areconstant threats in hydraulic systems.

In its escalators, the exceptional energyefficiency of ECO3000 technology isbacked up by different operationmodes such as load-dependentoperation; stand-by operation; andautomatic stop-and-go.
