Abstract The paper shows the preliminary studies for the University Campus ZEB Energy realization in Palermo. The particular location in the Mediterranean basin has required careful planning to resolve the problems related to high temperatures and humidity. For this reason has been employed strategies, elements and building materials that meet the requirements of sustainability and energy savings provided by law, in order to build a new building energy self-sufficient. The University of Palermo had the need to create new spaces to be used as classrooms for different types of education and especially of a space for conferences and conventions. This type of spaces is usually very energy eater because it must be kept a continuous very high interior comfort during the hours of use. To contribute passively to the conditioning of this space, especially during the long, hot summer months, it was set up a natural cooling system, which can contribute to the lowering of the internal temperature or most of the year. This system takes advantage of cool outdoor air intake by a shaded courtyard inside the building, in this courtyard was expected a tank of water and vegetation so that air can cool off naturally by contact. The air thus cooled introduced into the conference room through the iron grids, and generates an air movement that allows to lower the internal temperature of 3-4 C° compared to the initial one. The internal air movement is guaranteed by application of extraction grids in correspondence of the opposite wall, suitably designed to ensure a draw upwards and the consequent expulsion of the exhausted air. The study of the effective lowering of the temperature was carried out through a CFD simulation program that has also allowed us to identify the circulatory flow of air. The use of this simulation program has contributed to the design so that interior comfort has been guaranteed. For example the CFD simulation has allowed to arrange the seating so that the air distribution is not dangerous for the occupant. Thanks to this occasion we have developed an energy-saving strategy that could be shared under similar climatic conditions and collective spaces that consume a lot of energy.

1. INTRODUCTION Increasing energy efficiency in the building and in construction is a necessary action, for both individual and collective reasons: to have energy-efficient buildings is both significant savings due to lower costs in bill, is a decrease in the use of fossil fuels for production of heat and power, resulting in a reduction of gas emissions responsible for global pollution. Therefore, the priority for the new buildings and renovation of existing buildings is the reduction of energy consumption, which is accompanied by the replacement (partial or total) of fossil fuels with renewable and clean energy sources. The employ of renewable energy for heat and electricity supply of a building is not limited to the installation of energy production systems (photovoltaic, solar thermal, micro wind turbines and so on), but is necessary that the building organization should be able to employed the outdoor natural energy to satisfy a part of its energy needs, getting the maximum efficiency thanks to the use of passive systems. Unlike active, passive systems directly affect the building's structure, its shape, its orientation, the materials it is made and precautions taken to capture, accumulate and distribute energy. Passive buildings, in fact, are constructions that ensure the thermal comfort significantly reducing the contribution of conventional air conditioning systems. About thermal energy required for heating and cooling of the interior, the passive systems operate using only the natural phenomena of radiation, conduction, convection and ventilation. Numerous are the passive systems that can be adopted in a building, that are different according to climate and environmental context in which it is located, depending on whether you want to maximize solar gains (colder climate contexts) or you want to minimize them (warm climates).

2. SYSTEMS FOR PASSIVE COOLING: THE NATURAL VENTILATION The term "natural ventilation" is usually referred to a set of strategies for the control of the processes that underlie the air movement in indoor spaces. In order to activate this phenomenon and have a greater draw, IT IS NECESSARY TO predispose building elements, or technological devices capable of cooling the air coming from the bottom (for example, patios and shaded areas in general, as tanks of fresh air), or to heat the outgoing air (for example, air rooms suitable for the collection of solar radiation, in the case of the "solar chimney"). For the control of the ventilation resulting from the physical pressure of the wind on the building envelope, it is necessary to consider primarily the position of the openings in plan and elevation, along with their size, the space and closing internal distribution and adjustment devices of the air flow. The natural ventilation, in addition to reducing the resources consumption and indoor loads, is a fundamental system to ensure optimum indoor air quality: the movement of air involves a renewal of the same, inevitably improving the conditions of individuals' health. The passage of air through the confined rooms also helps the protection of the building in its interior, for example by avoiding degradation phenomena related to an excess of internal relative humidity.

2.1. Learning from tradition As demonstrated by some historical architectural references, the revaluation of same environmental aspects right from the design phase, as the orientation of buildings with regard to atmospheric conditions, the internal distribution of the spaces and mechanisms for opening and regulating the air flows and solar radiation, can favour the internal microclimate control without the use of cooling system, in addition to ensuring good architectural integration of all those building elements with those functional devices. The use of passive cooling systems, in particular for natural ventilation, is always widespread in Mediterranean countries, to cope with the difficult summer weather conditions. A famous example of this strategy is the Zisa Castle in Palermo, built in 1160, by Arabian makers, was characterized by the presence of an evaporative cooling system and natural ventilation, which, since its construction, has allowed the achievement of a still satisfactory indoor comfort levels. The massive shell of the castle consists of a box oriented in the east-west direction that develops around a square space in the middle, the centre of the building. On the ground floor there is the fountain room, which with its double height, the rich wall decorations and the presence of water, is a typical Islamic building element. Among the various design features, the main one that characterizes the Zisa is the internal natural ventilation system that, first of the many transformations that the building has been subject over the centuries, could ensure a constant circulation of fresh air and deportation of the hot one. The main front of the building is open to the sea, to enjoy the cool sea breezes the breezes lapped the water of the fishpond in front of the building, by entering through the arches of the main façade and reaching the fountain room.

The water, by evaporating, further lowered the air temperature before it began its upward momentum to the upper floors. in the hall of the fountain is present a typical element of the islamic tradition the salsabil: oblique marble slab carved in relief, that thanks to the irregularity of the surface created a whirling movement of water, increasing evaporation. the water was conveyed to the fountain through an opening in the wall and sliding on salsabil them reached the tanks, and then the fish pond. The ventilation system was made possible by the presence of vertical ventilation ducts placed

inside the protruding bodies, on the short sides of the building, which communicated with openings at different levels, taking advantage of the ascending hot air motion. The fresh air, produced in the fountain room, replaced the hot air present in the near rooms that it's naturally aspirated by the lateral towers. The central hall of the second floor and the others places adjacent were ventilated directly through the large openings in the roof of the building, which ensured the circulation of air to the stack effect. The opposite openings on both the east and west elevations also allowed the horizontal air flow, increased by the presence of staggered openings above the interior doors that connected the different. As well as the elements already described for the control of the internal microclimate, there are others, such as the "mashrabiya", wooden grates finely worked for the modulation the solar radiation.

3. PASSIVE STRATEGIES APPLICATION TO A STUDY CASE From the examples of the local tradition has been designed an integrated passive system for natural ventilation of a classroom conference of a new educational complex for the University of Palermo. In the project was managed in a particular way the energy aspect, using the integrated design of passive and active systems. The aim was to achieve a power consumption "almost zero", in line, moreover, with the directive "Europe 2020" and objectives "Nearly Zero Energy Buildings" it had been formulating. In order to achieve maximum energy efficiency, it has been put in place a sustainable energy strategy that includes: 1) The reduction in energy requirements, through the provision of materials and construction

technologies, high energy performance and low environmental impact; 2) Solar energy optimization through the use of sustainable energy sources; 3) The introduction of passive systems designed to improve indoor comfort and to reduce the

use of mechanical air conditioning systems. In particular, the sustainable energy strategy has been developed by the following aspects: - High thermal performance envelope to allow an internal climate comfort by reducing the

mechanical requirements, both in the warm and cold seasons. The total linear thermal transmittance of the envelope has been obtained by U = 0.19 W / m2K for a thickness of 40 cm;

- Thermal bridges correction to eliminate all heat loss. - Solar shield to obtain a good and diffuse natural light, but at the same time reducing the

excessive solar radiation. This shading system was achieved by internal venetian blinds inside the window frame and to a terracotta sunscreen system, superimposed on the perimeter windows, it allows to mitigate the greenhouse effect. A further reduction of the solar loads on the building envelope, are obtained by overlapping a flat support structure to photovoltaic panels which, at the same time, determines shadow zones in coverage and ensures a constant shading in the summer time of the glass walls inside the courtyard. This

system eliminates the direct sunlight. - Use of renewable energy resources to meet the primary energy needs are not covered by

the passive systems provided. The active use of solar energy has been considered by using a photovoltaic system located on the roof. The system will be hosted by an independent body supported by a steel structure and with an area of 360 square metres, that can provide an output of 15.00 kWp and an estimated output of 22,197 kWh / year.

- Use of passive and hybrid systems for the air conditioning of the Aula Magna in order to increase natural ventilation entering fresh air coming from the courtyard.

The design for the new building is based on a square plan in court that allows to have a greater exposure of the interior air, natural light and greenery. The square shape is modular and symmetrical: the use of a module of 0.94 m in fact has facilitated the internal design both in plan and in front of the building, providing a significant improvement in functional distribution of environments and ensuring coordination between the several technical elements. The project consists on three levels: the first is undergrounded and the other two are above ground. The square module of 0,94 m was fundamental to place internal separation elements such as curtain walls, pillars and reinforced concrete elements. On the basis of that shape, the building geometry is that of a square and the distribution of the interior is symmetrical with respect to the central axis of the plant.

The first level of the educational complex is underground than the ground level and includes a large parking for cars and motorcycles. The first level above ground consists mainly of classrooms for the conduct of teaching and a large assembly hall with 254 seats. The building is built around an almost square central courtyard. The large continuous windows that surrounding the courtyard guarantees an appropriate lighting and ventilation to the entire complex: all classrooms are placed along the sides of the building on the street, while a large corridor allows to enjoy, on three sides , of central courtyard of the ground floor. The courtyard includes a lawn and a stretch of water, that has not only aesthetic function but above all a functional one for its essential contribution to the passive cooling of the great hall. The classroom is covered with ash wood and there are eight semicircular rows of seats. Each terraced steps includes from 18 to 36 seats overcoming a different of height 1.12 meters. At the highest share of the terrace, exactly symmetrical with respect to the central axis of the

square mesh, there are two emergency stairs which reach the first level and from here immediately outside of the building. Near the main entrance, always arranged in a symmetrical way to the main organization, there are two large pipes to carry the air conditioning systems.

These pipes run on the length of the building, from the basement where constitute small technical rooms, to the roof where incorporate part of the air conditioning systems. Near the ceiling, the air circulation system draws in hot air from great class through the intake grids (see next paragraph on passive cooling system). The ceiling of the classroom has variable inclination.

The central part is made with "panels" of semicircular laminated glass placed at different heights through adjustable joints that allow to follow the slope of the great hall. The ceiling is lowered in the sides, leaving open the intake grilles and it is connected with the perimeter walls of the great class. This opaque part in the plasterboard includes small led

lights causally arranged on the entire surface. During the daylight hours, instead, the lighting is guaranteed by direct contact with the central atrium. A large window in fact, located centrally to the great class, allows to capture natural light directly from the outside and spread it inside.

4. ILLUSTRATION OF THE VENTILATION PASSIVE SYSTEM To contribute to the passive cooling of the Auditorium, especially during the hot summer months, it was set up a natural cooling system that allows to ensure a good indoor comfort for a long period of the year. This system was designed to optimize the natural ventilation of the air within the room, taking advantage of the physical principles that enable to trigger an air flow, by introducing fresh air and expelling the hottest and exhausted one. The fresh air to put inside comes from the building courtyard, adjacent to the Auditorium (see Figure 5).

The courtyard, enclosed in the middle of the building shape, is shaded for almost all hours of the day and for all months of the year. A water tank along the partition between the court and the room, also allows to keep a warm microclimate and to further cool the outdoor air, before introducing it in the Auditorium. The air, once it reaches a lower temperature through contact with the water and the surrounding vegetation, is entered in the Auditorium, through the grids placed in the lower part of the wall between the

Auditorium and the courtyard. To trigger the air flow inside the room, it was necessary to study, with the help of climate simulation softwares, the possible positions of the grids, so as to place them in the most suitable area for the purposes of natural ventilation. In the first hypothesis, it has been chosen to place the gray extraction on the countertop, in the opposite side of the input grids, in two vertical ducts - above the elevator shaft and next to the Auditorium, directly connected with the outside - that would have to activate a "chimney effect". However, the results of the CFD analysis, performed to chimneys 2 meters, 5 meters, and finally 10 meters high above the roof level, it appeared that the aspiration would occur only surpassing the 10 meters in height of the vertical pipe. These design solutions were therefore abandoned because inconvenient in terms of architecture and function. In the final solution it has been exploited the same principle, by positioning the intake grilles not along the countertop, but on the back wall of the room, directly communicating with outside.

In this case the simulations allow to confirm the existence of a natural ventilation within the room, through an air flow which allows to decrease the internal temperature of 3-4 ° C compared to the initial one. To achieve this result, the grids are designed in dark-colored aluminum, in order to maintain the high temperature (up to 70 C°) and facilitate the air chimney effect (see Figure 6).

5. CFD SIMULATION The computer simulation for the study of natural ventilation in the main hall was obtained using several open source programs available in the Linux distribution "CAELinux 2013". The phases of the process for the Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) analysis of the phenomenon have been the following:

a) definition of geometry (solid modelling); b) generation of the calculation grid by discretization of the volume occupied by the fluid

(meshing); c) numerical solution of the equations that define the physical model and boundary

conditions; d) post processing of results;

The volume of the main hall has been designed with the SALOME software so you can

integrate it with external modules for numerical calculation. Starting with CAD plants and sections of the project, it was designed the volume using different primitive entities that SALOME provides activating the "geometry” module. Proceeding by "fusion" of the individual elementary volumes gradually drawn was possible to obtain a single final volume which is the reference geometry for all subsequent calculations. Then you may select the "faces" that delimit the volume so you can proceed to the definition of the boundary conditions. Precisely groups of "faces" were created. They were inlet, outlet and wall to identify respectively the surfaces that are crossed by the incoming flow, by the output flow or delimiting the ventilation flow. So ended the phase of the geometry modelling, it has passed to the generation of computational grids (mesh). After activating the "Mesh" module SALOME, you can assign values to the parameters useful to define the type and size of the mesh limit values based on the real size of the main hall volume. Code Saturne software allows to model the ventilation of the air flow. The calculations are organized into "studies" and "cases". A "study" of Code Saturne consists generally more "cases" each of which is characterized by a given set of values. The Code Saturne GUI enables you to navigate through various sections to define the characteristics of the CFD simulation. The "Calculation environment" section allows you to define the parameters for "Mesh quality criteria": you can generate a report to make a check of the mesh and control it with the "Post-pro" module by choosing between different display modes before continuing data entry. You switch to the "Thermophysical models" where you can select the temperature scale and to the "Phisical Properties" which allow the insertion of the thermo-physical characteristics of the fluid ("Fluid Properties") and set the action of gravity ( "Gravity "). You can also define the flow algorithm (steady / unsteady flow) and other computing features such as "Turbulence model". After that you can define the temperature and the initial velocity of the fluid volume ("Volume conditions") and the "Boundary conditions". The next section allows you to import the "boundary regions" defined by the module Mesh of SALOME. For each boundary region you can specify the speed, the hydraulic diameter for turbulence and temperature. "Numerical parameters" section allows to set:

- "Time step" to define the "reference time step" and the "number of iterations" for calculations;

- "Equation parameters" to define the maximum number of iterations of the solver and the precision in the calculation, for example, of pressure and speed.

- "Global parameters" to define for example the method of calculating the gradient In the section "Calculation Control" you can create any monitoring points ("probes") which record the value of the variable selected in each preset time interval. Finally, the "Calculation Management" section allows you to start the calculation with the solver Code Saturne. At the end of the calculations, RESU directory is displayed in addition to those already present in the subject "CASE" in the active "STUDY". RESU contains nodes that identify the results obtained and that can be exported to be used with the "Post-pro" module of SALOME. The monitoring points exported to a .dat file can be used in post processing to generate the curves that show the evolution in time of the temperature, speed or other variables of interest. module - Paraview". You can display the trend of each variable of interest in the plane or in space as well as create animations that show the trend of the speed of the air flow within the volume. This system of representation of the temperature and air velocity allowed us to verify the operation of the system created in the design phase in order to modify those items that did not meet the requirements for indoor facilities for the main hall.

6. CONCLUSIONS

Trough this study we aimed to demonstrate the importance of the application of passive strategies for energy saving( we manage to secure a a lowering of the temperature of about 3°C) integrated into the building design. Indeed, we proceeded with the design of spaces and elements characterizing the project, starting from the CFD study results, that is not only served to verify the final result but has actively contributed to the definition of the project in the design phase: the air speed simulation graphics allowed to verify the performance and the distribution of air flow and also they gave information about flow intensity, so that this not give rise a discomfort. Currently the integration of passive systems for the conditioning of public buildings is being handled with difficult as it is still not possible to completely eliminate the presence of conventional mechanical systems. The CFD simulations and the possibility of making automatic this hybridization could provide new horizons and scenarios to be applied to a real reduction in energy consumption
