Q:I heard lming on The Way Back got pre y rough. True?—Jon Lambert, Atlanta, Ga.
A: “We obviously weren’t going to perish,” says Ed Harris, 60, who plays an escapee from a Soviet gulag in his new fi lm, in wide release Jan. 21. “But when we were climbing sand dunes or walking through waist-deep snow, we got a sense of [our characters’] will to live. I think the tougher things get, the closer you get to yourself.”
Q: What would Ben A eck do if he had to stop making movies?—Evie M., Philadelphia, Pa.
A: “That’s a hard question—our identities are so intertwined with our jobs,” says the actor, 38, whose character in The Company Men fi nds himself in a quandary after being laid off. “I can’t pretend to know what I’d do. I’d be devastated. When I started out, I didn’t worry about job security. I wasn’t afraid to gamble. Now it’s different.”
to be noticed.” Still, she isn’t going to gush nonstop: “I can be very direct—sometimes you have to be.” What’s been the hardest part? “The real diffi cult ones to decide about are the ones in the middle. Maybe they can sing, but you don’t see the potential of the whole package. Or maybe they have star quality more than talent. I can tell pretty fast if someone has a point of view and something they need to say.” As for that diva thing, Lopez protests: “Everyone who works with me calls me ‘Ma.’ And that started way before I had children.”
Q: Why is music in movies and on TV so loud? I can barely hear the dialogue! —Florence
Boren, Vicksburg, Miss.
A: We asked composer Alan Menken, 61, who co-wrote the Golden Globe–nominated song “I See the Light” for Tangled, to weigh in: “I pride myself on the fact that, with my music, you can hear dialogue and lyrics, but I have noticed that these days ‘louder’ seems to mean ‘better.’ I think people feel like it makes more of an impact. Ironically, it’s the opposite: When music is very quiet, the impact is much greater.”
Q: If Jennifer Lopez is such a diva, why does she seem so nice on the American Idol
promos?—B. Jones,
Chicago, Ill.
A: It’s true, J. Lo has been decidedly funny and sympathetic at the early Idolauditions. “I see that fear in their eyes as they come before us,” says Lopez, 41, “and it’s the same kind of terror I felt when I wanted

Q: What are the odds that Australian actress Jacki Weaver will get an Oscar nomination? —Michael
W. Williams, Fullerton, Calif.
A: Pretty good, thanks to critical acclaim and a Golden Globe nod. But the Animal Kingdom star, 63, isn’t taking bets: “I don’t want to jinx it!”

WS Are you excited about tonight’s
Golden Globe Awards? CF I’m excited to draw attention to our small
movie. It needs all the help it can get.
WS Why did it get an R rating?
CF It’s because of some swear words. But my
kids hear far worse at soccer matches in London.
WS Can you relate to the king’s plight?
CF I’ve never stuttered, but I’ve had the same
drowning feeling from stage fright. When I forget
my lines, I forget who I am, where I am. It feels
like an eternity until I come back.
WS How are you at communicating?
CF The people who’ve inspired me are infi nitely

That Ping You Doing-pong has moved out of the basement and into the big time. In fact, with 19.3 million devotees, it’s now the fi fth-fastest-growing sport in America, ahead of soccer, baseball, and football. And it’s garnering a slew of new young stars, including Ariel Hsing, who won
the U.S. national championships last month at 15. Susan Sarandon loves the game so much she’s co-founded a chain of table-tennis clubs called SPiN. “I’m helping it come out of the closet,” the Oscar winner said before SPiN Milwaukee opened last fall. The famously fi t actress has described the game as “the most fun way to stay in shape. It’s good for your mind as well as your body.” Dr. Daniel Amen agrees, pointing to studies showing that after playing, blood fl ow to the brain increases, along with the ability to process thoughts. “You have to think about what you’re doing while getting your eyes, hands, and feet to work together,” he notes. “I think it’s the best brain sport.” To fi nd a club near you, go to usatt.org.—Linda Himelstein

INTELLIGENCE Report
Why is
the word
“playwright”
spelled with
a “w” when the word
“copyright” is not?
—Jan Kalnbach,
Brooksville, Fla.
i’m sure you’ve
heard the adjective and verb “wrought,” referring to work shaped by intellect, artistry, effort, etc. (For example: wrought iron.) The maker of the project is called a “wright.” In the case of a play, he or she is a playwright.
“Copyright” refers to the exclusive legal “right to copy” (and sell, etc.) an original work of authorship, such as a book, photo, or play.

PARADE You have a prime-time slot at a ratings-challenged network. What’s your agenda for Piers Morgan Tonight?I’ve got to get the ratings up. If I do that, I’m a genius. If I don’t, I’m a half-wit.
Why should people who know you from reality TV trust you as an interviewer of newsmakers?I spent 25 years in Fleet Street, the great British newspaper industry. And I was plucked by Rupert Murdoch to edit the News of the
World when I was 28. He drummed into me that in newspapers, you’ve got to break great stories. It’s the same with an interview show. You’ve got to have interviews that snap the eyelids back.
What made Simon Cowell, executive producer of America’s
Got Talent, hire you as a judge? He said he was trying to fi nd somebody as obnoxious as him.
You’re often compared to him. Are you in fact alike?
I’m not as vain as him, physically. He has all these treatments and Botox and all. I don’t do that kind of thing. I think we’ve both
got big egos. Which are always, of course, driven half by supreme self-confi dence and half by supreme insecurity.
What will your interviewing style be like?I want it to be challenging but not threatening. And I am going to ask quite direct questions in a way that I think Brits get
away with, because we have a reputation for being a bit blunter.
As a judge on Britain’s Got Talent, you watched Susan Boyle cope with an unprecedented level of instant fame—she even wound up briefl y in a psychiatric facility. Knowing what you know now, would you have done anything differently? She wasn’t left on her own, but I certainly think the attitude was, Give her a couple of family members and she’ll be okay. Of course, it was much bigger than that. The low point came when she was admitted to the Priory Clinic, because then we realized this was pretty serious. I think everyone regrets that we didn’t work that out quicker. Having said that, she just thinks that she needed a good sleep and couldn’t get one. The cynics say, “Let Susan Boyle go back to her old life; this is all too much for her.” But she says, “Why on earth would I want to go back to my old life?” She’s the biggest-selling artist in the world.
For someone who so often travels between London, New York, and L.A., do you have such a thing as a Sunday ritual?I read about 13 newspapers on a Sunday in Britain. I live for that thump of a large pile of
them on the doorstep—
and then preferably
a really great roast lunch: roast beef, roast pork, roast lamb. It’s a very traditional British thing.
PIERS MORGAN
loves a good publicity stunt. Best known to U.S. audiences for
heckling goofy acts on America’s Got Talent and being crowned Donald Trump’s Celebrity Apprentice, he’s also the guy who exchanged fake wedding-chapel vows with Paris Hilton to promote a British TV special about Las Vegas. But his latest gig is no stunt: Starting Monday, the 45-year-old Englishman is taking over Larry King’s 9 p.m. talk-show slot on CNN. What makes him a natural to do high-profi le interviews? Morgan gives Steve Daly some frank answers.

What happens on Sundays in New York or L.A.?New York has Irish pubs you can have a pint in and restaurants that do a traditional roast. L.A. is a
completely alien culture. And because everyone
drives, they don’t tend to drink much. Try ordering a second bottle of wine at an L.A. restaurant and they call in the Betty Ford Center.
Will you be covering the royal wedding?I’m planning to take the show to London the week before and do it live from there. I knew Diana very well. I had lunch with her and Prince William when he was younger. I’ve known quite a few of the royals—Charles, Camilla, and so on. So I’m in a good position to keep an inside track on all that. It’s actually quite a gift for me, I think, that it’s happening soon into my tenure.
You sit in judgment of others’ talents. Any hidden talents of your own?I can do a very good Axl Rose impression, stripped to the waist in a bandanna, after I’ve had a few Jack Daniel’s.
How would Simon Cowell rank that act?He would get me straight off the show as fast as he possibly could.

ONE HUNDRED YEARS AFTER
my father’s birth, what accounts for his uncanny magic? He’s been gone from public life for nearly 20 years, dead for over half a decade, yet he’s remained alive in the minds of many Americans. Most people, what-ever their political beliefs, relate to my father as president of the United States. For eight years, he was my president, too. But he was my father for my entire life. My memories start with him lifting me and “fl ying” me through the rooms of our house, mimicking the drone of a pro-peller engine, before swooping me into bed for the night. Using one of his early nicknames for me, he would sing in his soft, unself-conscious tenor:
Old Skipper Reagan was a merry old soulAnd he went to Heaven on a telegraph pole. But the pole was thin and Skipper fell in,Right in heaven up to his chin.
Like all my siblings, I loved my father deeply, at times long-ingly. He was easy to love but hard to know. You couldn’t help wondering sometimes whether he remembered you once you were out of his sight.
And he was so naturally sun-ny, so devoid of cynicism or pettiness. Something in his guileless wonder at

the world made you want to shield him from harsh reality. His dreams might strike you as naive, but the way he cher-ished them made you reluctant to shat-ter his illusions. Who wouldn’t, after all, want to live in a shining city?
We all grow up idolizing, dethroning, and, with luck, later befriending our fathers, but can we really know them? Do they care to know us? At his own father’s funeral, Dad was overcome by a wave of despair until, he said, he heard Jack’s voice telling him, “I’m okay.” I have not, as of yet, heard my father’s voice whispering in my ear, but I haven’t stopped listening.
ON MARCH 30, 1981, MY FATHER was shot by John Hinckley Jr. as he was leaving the Hilton in
Washington, D.C. My wife and I were in Lincoln, Neb., but we hurried back to D.C. and headed straight for the hospital. Dad was in surgery, and I gathered immediately that the situation was dire. My mother, unsurprisingly, looked pale and shaken. She seemed even tinier than usual in a room full of bustling, offi cious bodies, none of them telling her what she wanted to hear: Her husband was still alive, he would make it. Her prime directive for 30 years had been to support, nurture, and pro-tect my father. Now, with his life hang-ing by a thread, she was locked out of the room, helpless.
Much has been made of my father’s joking that day: “Honey, I forgot to duck”; “All in all, I’d rather be in Phila-delphia”; and, to his surgeons, “Please tell me you’re all Republicans.” Del Wilber, a journalist working on a book about the assassination attempt, told me that Dad fi rst tried out that last line in the emergency room, where the person-nel were understandably in no mood for humor. So he fi led it away for a more opportune moment—like surgery. There he got the properly appreciative reac-

tion, as lead trauma surgeon Dr. Joseph Giordano—a liberal Democrat—told him, “Today, Mr. President, we’re all Republicans.”
Bleeding to death with a bullet in his chest, and he’s doing shtick. That was so Dad. Anyone reading this who knew him will be nodding and thinking: He was embarrassed to be putting everyone out. The idea that schedules had been dis-rupted, people’s routines upended, that he had been an agent of chaos, would have fi lled him with dismay. He was the one meant to bring order to the world. He was supposed to be the lifesaver.
Between the moment he was shot and the time he left surgery, Dad lost rough-ly half his blood volume. That he sur-vived is testament to the quick reactions of Jerry Parr and his Secret Service detail and the sterling care he received at George Washington University hospital. He was discharged after two weeks, and his recovery—a few complications not-withstanding—proceeded apace. A state-of-the-art home gym was installed in the White House living quarters. Be-fore long, Dad was boasting that he’d added an inch of muscle to his chest.
In a town where everything is ren-dered into political advantage (or its
opposite), Dad’s plucky response to near assassination earned him valuable capi-tal during his fi rst term. His cherished tax cuts were passed. However, they were scaled back when it became appar-ent that trickle-down economics was, indeed, “voodoo.” His approval rating in polls fell to 35% but then revived along with economic indicators. Before you knew it, another campaign season was coming round again.
We children might have found it strange that our father, whom we had witnessed scampering about the house in his Y-fronts, could have become president. But from the moment he en-tered politics back in the ’60s and people began speaking of him as presidential material, none of us doubted that he could win. We never had second thoughts about his ability to fill the chair. This made my telling him that I didn’t want him to run for re-election in 1984 distinctly uncomfortable. I said: “You’ve already been shot once. That’ll only give other idiots ideas—and there are plenty of them out there. I don’t want to see anything like that happen again. I know you’ve already made up your mind, but I have to tell you, I’d prefer you didn’t run.”

Every word I spoke was true. But I had other concerns as well, ones I couldn’t share.
Three years into his fi rst term as president, I felt the fi rst shiv-ers of concern that something beyond mellowing was affect-ing my father. We’d always ar-gued over this issue or that. He generally had the advantage of practiced talking points backed up by staff research, but I was an unabashed, occasionally ef-fective advocate for my own positions. “He told me you make him feel stupid,” my mother once shared, to my alarm. I didn’t want my father to feel stupid. If he was going to shoulder massive responsibility, I wanted him to feel on top of his game. If he was going to fulfi ll his duties as president, he would have to be.
Watching his first debate with 1984 Democratic presi-dential nominee Walter Mon-dale, I began to experience the nausea of a bad dream coming true. At 73, Ronald Reagan would be the oldest president ever re-elected. Some voters were imagining grandpa in charge of a bristling nuclear ar-senal, and it was making them nervous. Worse, my father now seemed to be giving them rea-son for concern. My heart sank as he floundered his way through his responses. He looked tired and bewildered.
In the debate’s aftermath, Dad knew he’d performed badly but convinced himself he’d been “overtrained.” There may have been some truth to that. My ear-lier worries, however, remained.
I flew out to Kansas City, Mo., for the second continued

debate two weeks later. Should Dad fall, I felt I should be there to help catch him.
I needn’t have worried. Whatever had been bothering my father, he seemed to have vanquished it. Knowing he fed off the approval of crowds, his staff had arranged a brief appearance before an enthusiastic audience prior to the debate. That got him loosened up. With a sharp slap on the be-hind from his younger son, he entered the hall his usual confi dent self. The Mondale campaign effectively ended when Dad, re-sponding to a question about his fi tness for offi ce, ad-libbed that he would not “exploit, for political purposes, my opponent’s youth and inexperience.”
Backstage afterward, I high-fi ved Dad and let out a loud whoop. He went on, of course, to one of the most dominant vic-tories in presidential election history, with Mondale winning only one state—Minnesota, his home—out of 50.
I don’t want to give the impression that my father was mumbling incoherently during this or any period. But by the time he turned 76, he had survived a near-fatal shooting and surgery for colon cancer. As old men will, he’d learned to conserve his energy for crucial moments. The Iran-contra affair was a perfect example of the sort of mess Dad was ill-suited, at any age, to reckon with once it blew up in his face. Yet, little more than three months later, he would stand at the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin and chal-lenge Mikhail Gorbachev to “tear down this wall.” It was a phrase that neither his chief of staff, How-ard Baker, nor his deputy national-security adviser, Colin Powell, wanted him to employ. He showed better judgment in overruling them. Dad could clearly still get up for the big moments.
Before leaving offi ce he’d endure one more trial that could not be edited from his script: his wife’s diagnosis of breast cancer and subse-quent mastectomy. The reality of the situation caught up with him as he waited for her to return from surgery at Bethesda Naval Hospi-tal. Sitting by himself in a hospital room, he was no longer a world leader but a frightened and lonely man. His physician had asked a
nurse, Paula Trivette, to check on him, and in her arms he broke down, sobbing uncontrollably. That he could do nothing to spare his Nancy from suffer-ing was more than he could bear.
In July 1989, barely six months out of offi ce, my father went out riding and was thrown by his horse. After refusing medical attention, he ultimately re-
lented and was transported to the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota. Surgeons opening his skull to relieve pressure on the brain emerged from the operating room with the news that they had detected probable signs of Alzheim-er’s disease. Further tests conducted the fol-lowing year confi rmed those suspicions.
I’ve seen no evidence that my father (or anyone else) was aware of his medical condi-tion while he was in

“You’ll love the way the aroma fi lls up the whole house on
a cold winter day. Feel free to use a little more ground beef
to make even more meatballs.”
I have four boys. There’s nothing worse than spending a lot of time on
a big dinner you hope they’ll enjoy, and then—after you knock yourself out—having them push the food around their plates for a few minutes and ask to be excused. But most kids eat pasta, and mine love my spaghetti and meatballs. It was one of the din-ners my mother made all the time. She died when I was 12, so I didn’t have that much time with her, but she taught me how to make meat-balls. That was kind of my job, and I really looked forward to it. I would come home from school, wash my hands, and get to work brown-ing them in the pan. It’s the sort of great, old-fashioned comfort food anybody can make. Recipes on the Food Network look fun—and there’s nothing wrong with trying new dishes—but we’re all so busy! The kids have homework and activities. But I know if I serve this with a red sauce, a nice salad, and some great buttery-hot garlic bread, we’ll have a relaxed dinner. It’s “mmmmmm.”

office. Had the diagnosis been made in, say, 1987, would he have stepped down? I believe he would have. Today we are aware that the changes associated with Alzheim-er’s can be in evidence years, even decades, before identifi able symp-toms arise. The question, then, of whether my father suffered from the beginning stages of the disease while in office more or less answers itself.
Does this delegitimize his presidency? Only to the extent that President Kennedy’s Ad-dison’s disease and Lincoln’s clinical depression undermine theirs. Better to judge our pres-idents by what they actually ac-complish than what hidden factors may be weighing on them. We are entitled to ap-prove or disapprove of my fa-ther’s conduct in offi ce irrespec-tive of his medical condition. That likely condition, though, serves as a reminder that when we elect presidents, we elect hu-man beings with all their foibles and weaknesses. I fi nd some-thing courageous in my father’s dedicated pursuit—even in the face of his declining powers—of peaceful rapprochement with the Soviet Union, the world’s other nuclear superpower, throughout his second term. He never stopped wanting to save the world.

This summary does not take the place of talking to your
healthcare provider about your medical condition or
treatment. See full Prescribing Information for complete
product information.
What is the most important information I should
know about ADVAIR DISKUS?
ADVAIR DISKUS can cause serious side effects, including:
1. People with asthma who take long-acting beta2-
adrenergic agonist (LABA) medicines, such as
salmeterol (one of the medicines in ADVAIR DISKUS),
have an increased risk of death from asthma
problems. It is not known whether fl uticasone propionate,
the other medicine in ADVAIR DISKUS, reduces the risk of
death from asthma problems seen with salmeterol.
• Call your healthcare provider if breathing problems
worsen over time while using ADVAIR DISKUS. You
may need different treatment.
• Get emergency medical care if:
- breathing problems worsen quickly and
- you use your rescue inhaler medicine, but it does not
relieve your breathing problems.
2. ADVAIR DISKUS should be used only if your healthcare
provider decides that your asthma is not well controlled
with a long-term asthma control medicine, such as
inhaled corticosteroids.
3. When your asthma is well controlled, your healthcare
provider may tell you to stop taking ADVAIR DISKUS. Your
healthcare provider will decide if you can stop ADVAIR
DISKUS without loss of asthma control. Your healthcare
provider may prescribe a different asthma control
medicine for you, such as an inhaled corticosteroid.
4. Children and adolescents who take LABA medicines may
have an increased risk of being hospitalized for asthma
problems.
What is ADVAIR DISKUS?
• ADVAIR DISKUS combines an inhaled corticosteroid
medicine, fl uticasone propionate (the same medicine
found in FLOVENT®), and a LABA medicine, salmeterol
(the same medicine found in SEREVENT®).
- Inhaled corticosteroids help to decrease infl ammation in
the lungs. Infl ammation in the lungs can lead to asthma
symptoms.
- LABA medicines are used in people with asthma and
chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). LABA
medicines help the muscles around the airways in your
lungs stay relaxed to prevent symptoms, such as wheezing
and shortness of breath. These symptoms can happen
when the muscles around the airways tighten. This makes
it hard to breathe. In severe cases, wheezing can stop your
breathing and cause death if not treated right away.
• ADVAIR DISKUS is used for asthma and COPD as follows:
Asthma
ADVAIR DISKUS is used to control symptoms of asthma
and to prevent symptoms such as wheezing in adults and
children aged 4 years and older.
ADVAIR DISKUS contains salmeterol (the same medicine
found in SEREVENT). LABA medicines, such as salmeterol,
increase the risk of death from asthma problems.
ADVAIR DISKUS is not for adults and children with asthma who:
- are well controlled with another asthma control
medicine, such as a low to medium dose of an
inhaled corticosteroid medicine
- have sudden asthma symptoms.
COPD
COPD is a chronic lung disease that includes chronic
bronchitis, emphysema, or both. ADVAIR DISKUS 250/50 is
used long term, 2 times each day to help improve lung function
for better breathing in adults with COPD. ADVAIR DISKUS
250/50 has been shown to decrease the number of fl are-ups
and worsening of COPD symptoms (exacerbations).
Who should not use ADVAIR DISKUS?
Do not use ADVAIR DISKUS:
• to treat sudden, severe symptoms of asthma or COPD
• if you have a severe allergy to milk proteins. Ask your
doctor if you are not sure.
What should I tell my healthcare provider before
using ADVAIR DISKUS?
Tell your healthcare provider about all of your health
conditions, including if you:
• have heart problems • have high blood pressure
• have seizures • have thyroid problems
• have diabetes • have liver problems
• have osteoporosis
• have an immune system problem
• are pregnant or planning to become pregnant. It is not
known if ADVAIR DISKUS may harm your unborn baby.
• are breastfeeding. It is not known if ADVAIR DISKUS
passes into your milk and if it can harm your baby.
• are allergic to any of the ingredients in ADVAIR
DISKUS, any other medicines, or food products
• are exposed to chickenpox or measles
Tell your healthcare provider about all the medicines you
take including prescription and non-prescription medicines,
vitamins, and herbal supplements. ADVAIR DISKUS and
certain other medicines may interact with each other.
This may cause serious side effects. Especially, tell your
healthcare provider if you take ritonavir. The anti-HIV
medicines NORVIR® (ritonavir capsules) Soft Gelatin,
NORVIR (ritonavir oral solution), and KALETRA® (lopinavir/
ritonavir) Tablets contain ritonavir.
Know the medicines you take. Keep a list and show it
to your healthcare provider and pharmacist each time you
get a new medicine.
How do I use ADVAIR DISKUS?
Do not use ADVAIR DISKUS unless your healthcare
provider has taught you and you understand everything.
Ask your healthcare provider or pharmacist if you have
any questions.
• Children should use ADVAIR DISKUS with an adult’s help,
as instructed by the child’s healthcare provider.
• Use ADVAIR DISKUS exactly as prescribed. Do not use
ADVAIR DISKUS more often than prescribed. ADVAIR
DISKUS comes in 3 strengths. Your healthcare provider
has prescribed the one that is best for your condition.
• The usual dosage of ADVAIR DISKUS is 1 inhalation
2 times each day (morning and evening). The 2 doses
should be about 12 hours apart. Rinse your mouth with
water after using ADVAIR DISKUS.
• If you take more ADVAIR DISKUS than your doctor has
prescribed, get medical help right away if you have any
unusual symptoms, such as worsening shortness of
breath, chest pain, increased heart rate, or shakiness.
• If you miss a dose of ADVAIR DISKUS, just skip that dose.
Take your next dose at your usual time. Do not take 2
doses at one time.
• Do not use a spacer device with ADVAIR DISKUS.
• Do not breathe into ADVAIR DISKUS.
• While you are using ADVAIR DISKUS 2 times each day,
do not use other medicines that contain a LABA for
any reason. Ask your healthcare provider or pharmacist if
any of your other medicines are LABA medicines.
• Do not stop using ADVAIR DISKUS or other asthma
medicines unless told to do so by your healthcare provider
because your symptoms might get worse. Your healthcare
provider will change your medicines as needed.
• ADVAIR DISKUS does not relieve sudden symptoms.
Always have a rescue inhaler medicine with you to treat
sudden symptoms. If you do not have an inhaled, short-
acting bronchodilator, call your healthcare provider to have
one prescribed for you.
Call your healthcare provider or get medical care
right away if:
• your breathing problems worsen with ADVAIR DISKUS
• you need to use your rescue inhaler medicine more often
than usual
• your rescue inhaler medicine does not work as well for you
at relieving symptoms
• you need to use 4 or more inhalations of your rescue
inhaler medicine for 2 or more days in a row
• you use 1 whole canister of your rescue inhaler medicine
in 8 weeks’ time
• your peak fl ow meter results decrease. Your healthcare
provider will tell you the numbers that are right for you.
• you have asthma and your symptoms do not improve after
using ADVAIR DISKUS regularly for 1 week
What are the possible side effects with ADVAIR DISKUS?
• ADVAIR DISKUS can cause serious side effects,
including:
• See “What is the most important information I should
know about ADVAIR DISKUS?”
• serious allergic reactions. Call your healthcare provider
or get emergency medical care if you get any of the
following symptoms of a serious allergic reaction:
- rash
- hives
- swelling of the face, mouth, and tongue
- breathing problems
• sudden breathing problems immediately after inhaling
your medicine
• effects on heart

began lulling herself to sleep at night by imagining that she was holding a lottery check. She pictured the exact amount: $112 followed by lots of zeroes. The story seems implausible, and yet Stafford’s steady gaze and positive energy make you believe her, even the bit about knowing what she’d be wearing when she won: a lime-green blouse with a leaf print. “That part kept surprising me,” she says, laughing. “I thought I’d lose weight by then and wouldn’t still have that top.”
But that’s what she was wearing the next Mother’s Day when she learned the $2 ticket she’d bought made her the sole winner in a drawing worth, yes, $112 million. “When I found out, I sat in silence for a minute because it confi rmed how powerful our minds can be,” she says with a grin. “Then I started screaming and crying!”
Stafford had always been generous, even when she had much less to give. As a 6-year-old, she forked over her allowance to UNICEF, and when her younger brother died in a car crash in 1999, she took in his children: Qumani, now 14; Sigourney, 15; Jahmil, 18; Charmaine, 20; and Presley, 22. Stafford opted to take a $67 million lump-sum payout from the lottery. So, after sharing the prize with her father and older brother, putting away funds for the kids’ education, and making a few giddy purchases, she wrote substantial checks to organizations including UNICEF, the Natural Resources Defense Council, and God’s Love We Deliver.

A major cause of residen-tial fires in the United Statesis portable heaters. The choiceof fire and safety profession-als everywhere, the Eden-PURE® has no exposed heat-ing elements that can cause afire. The outside of the Eden-PURE® only gets warm to thetouch so that it will not burnchildren or pets. And your petmay be just like my dog whohas reserved a favorite spotnear the EdenPURE®.
Accept no imitations. The EdenPURE® can also helpyou feel better. Unlike Eden-PURE® imitators, it will not re-duce humidity or oxygen in theroom. These imitators use ce-ramic plates instead of our
patented copper. Cheap ceram-ic plates reduce humidity, dryout your sinuses and make yourskin dry. With other heatingsources, you'll notice that youget sleepy when the heat comeson because they are burning upoxygen.
The advanced space-ageEdenPURE® also heats theroom evenly, wall to wall andfloor to ceiling. Other heatingsources heat rooms unevenlywith most of the heat concen-trated high and to the center ofthe room. And as you know, portable heaters only heat anarea a few feet around theheater. With the EdenPURE®,the temperature will not varyin any part of the room.
How can a person cuttheir heating bill with theEdenPURE®? First, the Eden-PURE® uses less energy to cre-ate heat than many othersources, but that is just part ofwhy it will cut a person’s heat-ing bill. The EdenPURE® willheat a room in minutes. Youwill immediately notice thedifference! Therefore, you canturn the heat down in yourhouse to as low as 50 degrees,
but the room you are occupy-ing, which has the Eden-PURE®, will be warm andcomfortable.
Your EdenPURE® easilymoves from room to room.Using zone heating keeps youcomfortable and reduces yourheating bills. This can drasti-
cally cut heating bills; in someinstances, the savings may besubstantial.
The EdenPURE® will payfor itself in weeks. It willkeep a great deal of extramoney in a user’s pocket. Be-cause of today’s spiraling gas, oil, propane, and other energycosts, the EdenPURE® will pro-vide even greater savings astime goes by.
