“A dream you dream alone is only a dream. A dream you dream together is reality.” - John Lennon

A leap of faith led to the opening of Saint Cloche. We didn’t focus on the day-to-day successes but on the day-to-day significance of Saint

Cloche’s mission and that is, to unearth and support new talent in the Sydney art world. In this past year, so many of our dreams have

manifested and become reality and we are so grateful.

Saint Cloche is first and foremost a gallery that celebrates humanity in all its diverse forms. It’s a democratic space that nurtures raw talent

and meaningful connection by growing community. A gallery that cultivates friendly accessibility - an approachable place where all feel welcome, to collect something beautiful for themselves, and to know they are supporting emerging artists and a dynamic art culture itself.

At the end of each year Saint Cloche presents a Grand Finale group show. In the spirit of collaboration, PARADISO is the 5th edition curated by Saint Cloche Founder Kitty Clark and is designed to create dialogue, and promote and celebrate the diverse, creative talents of artist’s that

have been handpicked to illuminate the curatorial concept.

P A R A D I S OA Beautiful Dream.

This month-long exhibition is the crescendo to Saint Cloche’s 2019 exhibition schedule and for what has been an exciting and transformative

year, with the gallery breaking plenty of new ground. PARADISO is a celebration that not only commemorates the many milestones achieved by Saint Cloche this year but is also a salute to the talents of emerging

artists both in Australia and internationally. We are delighted to present, two international emerging artists, Daniel Barreto from Mexico and

Yusuke Abe from Japan – at Saint Cloche, for the first time, connecting emerging artists from across the globe.’

PARADISO – is a state of mind, it’s not a place. With the New Year fast approaching, this December, we are digging a little deeper and have

asked our artists to take a creative leap into the hidden paradise of their dreams. Exploring Dante’s, literary work, ‘Divine Comedy’, Alfred Hitchcock’s film ‘Spellbound’, the work of Dali and Giacometti, we encouraged our artists to delve into the surreal world of one’s own dreamscapes and bring life to their dreams. We invited them to be

inspired by their own memories and dream sequences to form a contemporary narrative and to imagine a better world – the fuel needed

to enable all great invention, change or innovation in life – to forge a pathway to a multi-dimensional utopian existence for our future. We have to see it and believe it to be able to birth a new reality, we need to focus on what we want to create, there’s no more time to float adrift without a

compass. Let’s allow our dreams to establish new pathways and connections to a new way of being.

Welcome to ‘Paradiso’, a beautiful dream.

BRIDGETTE MCNABBridgette McNab is a graphic still life and portrait painter

currently based in Melbourne after years living abroad. Bridgette likens the process of creating a painting to that of

creating an identity. In her work she draws on cinematographic, fashion and pop culture references, demonstrating her interest in hyperreality and the performative nature of contemporary

culture. Bridgette graduated from The National Art School with an Honours Degree in Painting in 2011; the sole recipient of the

prestigious Clitheroe Foundation Honours Scholarship. Since then she has exhibited extensively and appeared as a finalist in

many well-known art prizes such as The Archibald Prize, The Doug Moran National Portrait Prize and the Portia Geach

Memorial Award.

Works in PARADISO further explore Bridgette’s preoccupation with role-play, artifice and fantasy. Girlish dreamscapes collide with modern fashion and technology markers indicative of our

hyper-real world. Created using a lexicon of appropriation techniques, these fictional realities guilefully allude to the

multiplex way appearances are constructed and codified. Pop song lyrics serve as the titles for the works forming playful

double entendres that hint at the commodification of divinity and its place within our consumer culture.

CLAIRE JOHNSONClaire Johnson is a ceramic artist and painter currently based

on the mid north coast of NSW. In 2014 Claire completed a Bachelor of Fine Art majoring in ceramics at UNSW Art and Design. Claire has also worked on larger scale commercial

projects which can be seen at Green Park Hotel -Darlinghurst, Public House - Petersham and Paddo Inn - Paddington. In 2018 Claire was the collaborating artist with Australian fashion label

Gorman for their Autumn collection.

In response to PARADISO, Claire furthered her own explorations of the divine, drawing inspiration from celestial

and surrealist imagery. The fantasy of our desire for connection and the way we glorify lovers, paying homage to them

throughout art history is grounded firmly in her work. The lover or muse guides us through our own waking dream, a path to

nirvana where desire allows us to experience heaven. Her work is a homage to lovers, the idea of the gesture, movement,

personal experience and femininity.

DANIEL BARRETODaniel Barreto works from his studio ‘Estudio Barro’ located in

Guadalajara, Mexico. Most recently, he has been directing several animation videos for emerging to well-established

musicians mostly in the Mexican scene and a couple in the US, working with brand identity, Murals and Brand Commissions.

Daniel graduated from The School of the Museum of Fine Arts/TUFTS (BOSTON) in 2016 with a Bachelor of Fine Art,

concentrating in illustration, animation and digital installation.

Daniel wanted to evoke the feeling of PARADISO with his artworks by creating an illusion which compels visually and

emotionally that state of mind. The subject of dreams is something that Daniel’s practice has always gravitated

towards. Around 2013, furthered his practice through a book called “The Yoga of Dreams” which opened up a door for him to

experience lucid dreaming by keeping a visual diary of each dream he had during that period. Rather than imitate the exact

visual of a dream he represents it using feelings or emotion expressed through colour, shape, situation, representative

mirrors and movement. With his practice Daniel hopes to bring peace, awe, completeness, self-awareness and critical-thinking/

reality-checking to the spectator.

DAN WITHEYDan Withey was born in 1986 in Birmingham England. Although

Dan addresses the dilemmas of modern- day society such as consumerism, the environment and freedom, his works are still

imbued with a playful humour and humility. In 2004 Dan immigrated to Australia and studied a Bachelor of Visual

Communication (specialising in Illustration) at the University of South Australia. He graduated in 2007 with the Design

Institute of Australia’s student of the year award, and he then decided to transition into a career in Visual Arts. Since this

time, he has had over 20 successful solo shows.

The contrast between the paintings for this show are like Dan’s dreams in the way that some are very sharp, some are minimal,

others are more nebulous, and some are loose in application whilst others are tight. This differing of application also relates

to the transition between different dreams and how a scene change can be experienced in multiple ways - sudden or

gradual and sometimes shocking.

ELISE CAMERON-SMITHIn 2012, Elise enrolled in a one-year intensive Fine Furniture Making

course at the Sturt Craft Centre in the Southern Highlands after two and a half years of dedicated Design studies at the Enmore Design Centre. At Sturt Craft Centre she was awarded the Australian Decorative and

Fine Arts Society Bursary for her dedication. On completion of her studies she was awarded the Craft ACT Emerging Artist Award and was

invited to exhibit her work at their 'Living in Design' exhibition the following year. In 2014, Elise then began a year-long traineeship with Leon Sadubin, one of Australia's best Furniture Designer/Makers and also worked for legendary Sculptor John Van Der Kolk. In 2015 Elise

began her solo voyage as an artist, craftswoman and maker. In her two years of trade she has been featured in Frankie, Donna Hay, Yen, Home

Beautiful, The Captain & Real Living Magazine, and has sold her creations in Australia, Brazil, The Bahamas, Singapore & America.

Drawing on the Surrealist films of the 1920s, Un chien andalou (Salvador Dalí and Luis Buñuel, 1928) and L’Age d’Or (Buñuel, 1930) Elise transports

the viewer into the dreamy world of PARADISO. Inspired by the often overlooked female artists of the surrealist movement Elise has created a

sculptural series based on human hands and eyes. Most commonly portrayed in the male form, hands were strong symbol & motif used

throughout the surrealist movement. Elise’s hands not only pay tribute to female artists but also explore her own personal dream world. The

symbolism of the Eye in surrealism often explored between the inner self, the subjective self and its place within the external world. Rene

Magritte's False Mirror, 1929 in particular delved deep into these themes which still ring true in today’s modern and very connected world, where

we have a digital version of ourselves which doesn't always align with our natural state of being.

EMMA BARTIKEmma Bartik is a Sydney-based artist, she creates with clay, colour and physical bodies to explore themes of

fragility and femininity. With a distinctive colour palette of pastel and sorbet tones, Emma uses an experimental process with coloured porcelain to create decorative

landscapes of colour, unique to each piece. In 2016 Emma graduated from UNSW Art and Design.

For PARADISO, Emma wanted to capture the ephemeral feeling of a dream upon waking and render it in colour. Expressive, distant and yet familiar. Reminiscent of a

dreamscape the colour palette feels whimsical and the pieces filled with movement. Dali’s theory of ‘Softness and

Hardness’ has furthered her own exploration of fragility contrasted by the soft, organic sculptural forms and the

materiality of ceramic porcelain. Femininity and the physical body mirror this theme which is both a juxtaposition and an experience of coexistence.

GEMMA AVERYGemma Avery is based in Sydney and works in painting,

printmaking, collage and the artists book. She completed a Bachelor of Fine Arts in 2013 at the National Art School,

securing first class honours, and a Master of Fine Arts from the same institution, completed in 2016. Gemma has been

the recipient of numerous awards and residencies including the Mark Henry Cain Memorial Scholarship,

2015, the Goldberg Prize for Excellence in Photography and Print Media, 2017 and the Onslow Storrier NAS Studio Residency Cité Internationale des Art, Paris, 2018. She has

exhibited in numerous exhibitions and prizes in both Australia and internationally including the Hatched Survey exhibition PICA Perth, 2014, the Los Angeles Independent Book Fair, 2015, the Fishers Ghost Art Award, 2016 and

the Konika Minolta Redlands Art Prize, 2018.

Gemma’s approach to ‘making’ aligns with Surrealist notions of creativity as a way of tapping into aspects of the

unconscious mind. She enjoys the directness and the legibility of collage; an open and playful process, collage

allows her to alter / interrupt and rearrange images in ways that visibly disrupt the surface (of reality). The best work often comes when she is not thinking or trying too

hard - where happy accidents happen, and inner thoughts and external realities collide.

ILEIGH HELLIERIleigh Hellier is an emerging artist from Newcastle. Ileigh works using bright, sometimes unrealistic colours and simplified forms to capture feelings of the landscape and its uniqueness rather than depicting specific places. She employs techniques such as glazing and sgraffito to create textured, dynamic and playful paintings. She was awarded the Newcastle Emerging Artist Prize for painting and was a finalist in the Biannual Brenda Clouten Memorial Travelling Scholarship. She completed a

Diploma of Fine Arts at TAFE before graduating from Newcastle University with a Bachelor of Fine Art.

Growing up in Australia with a love of nature Ileigh spent her time observing its unique landscape. She clung to the coast out

of love and familiarity, however this provoked curiousness towards the desert and the bush. Travelling to more arid parts of the country to feed her desire she was constantly overwhelmed

by the vastness of the landscape; This made her feel a great sense of belonging and fondness toward country. In her practice Ileigh draws from her own personal memories and experiences.

For PARADISO Ileigh has skewed her memories so her paintings have a dreamlike quality to them. Clouds, stars, reflections and shadows are exaggerated. Trees are simplified and non-realistic

but still representational. She employs techniques such as layering and scratching back into the surface as if she had

remembered a detail at the last minute.

LAUREN EATONLauren Eaton is a Sydney born self-taught creative. She explores

materials and their characteristics when pushed beyond their everyday use to craft vessels and sculptural objects. Lauren’s

unique process begins with a sculptured master used to create a silicone mould. A combination of hydrostone, dental die stone, and oxides are poured into the mould to form the foundation of a piece. Upon release, each piece is meticulously sanded and

polished by hand, which either stands on its own or is partnered with joining materials and glass. Lauren’s work has been

featured in publications such as Broadsheet, Real Living and Frankie and has worked with high-end brands, including Tiffany

& Co. and David Jones - Sydney and Melbourne.

In response to PARADISO, Lauren has adapted her signature style of soft shapes and hard lines to create a series of fractured reflections in a dreamscape. Utilising her skill in casting and with

core materials including hydrostone, diestone and the introduction of mirrored acrylic, these wall sculptures draw on

inspiration from surrealist imagery, colour and reflection.

LUCA LETTIERILuca Lettieri is a multidisciplinary artist based in South Australia whose work utilises traditional craft practice

to create sculptural objects. Luca trained as a traditional furniture maker before focusing on creating sculptural pieces from clay and glass inspired by post

minimalism and Italian folk art traditions. Most recently Luca exhibited in the 15th Australian Ceramics Triennale

in ‘Endemic Earth’ that featured 23 contemporary ceramicists’ work inspired by Tasmanian botanicals.

This collection of work for PARADISO utilised textured glass-blowing moulds and a custom clay extruder dye to create sculptural objects. These pieces are inspired by a series of Salvador Dali watercolours that accompanied

the text of Dante's Paradiso.

MATILDA KUBANY-DEANEMatilda Kubany-Deane is an emerging Sydney based artist who has worked in the ceramic medium for many years. In 2018 she was a finalist in the Woollarah Small Sculpture Prize where she

was awarded the Plinth Prize. Recently she completed a Bachelor of Fine Arts at the National Art School, Sydney.

Matilda’s work features hand-built cylindrical and spherical ceramic forms with additions such as loops, spikes, blobs and

chains. She makes these to emulate the man-made and natural world. Being able to manipulate a material such as clay which

comes from the earth, into whatever she desires is a comment on the way our natural world is taken, and manipulated to our

human desires, often without much thought given to the impact we leave behind. Matilda takes great influence from the ocean

and its coral reefs. Growing up around the sea, it is her sanctuary and happy place – her paradise. This body of work

aims to reflect such positive experience within her own environment.

SEAN WADEYSean holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts (Hons) and Graduate

Diploma of Fine Art from the National Art School. In 2016 Sean was awarded the Mark Henry Cain Travel Scholarship where he researched Baroque ornament and design in northern Italy. He

has been a finalist in the Redlands Konica Minolta Art Prize (emerging), Grace Cossington Smith Art Award and the Art

Gallery of NSW Basil and Muriel Hooper Scholarship.

Sean’s work explores our perception of the natural world as contemporaneously influenced by technology. Grounded by a love for materiality and a fascination with science fiction, his

practice employs various methods of production and reproduction in order to transform earthly materials into

luscious, otherworldly textures. Methods of sculpting, casting and illuminating using 12V lighting systems link his own body to that of the autonomous processes of technology. These hybrid

surfaces imagine a future where nature has reclaimed and absorbed human creation, incorporating it into its own forms.

SOMCHAI CHAROENSomchai Charoen is a Thai-born ceramic artist based in Sydney who has exhibited both nationally and internationally. Trained in industrial

ceramics design, he was a former lecturer at Silpakorn University, Thailand. Since migrating to Australia in 2002, he has worked

commercially as a mould and model maker as well as established his ceramic homeware label, Eat Clay. Somchai is co-founder of Belmore ITCH, a creative for non-ceramic artists to experiment, explore and

interpret the medium.

PARADISO, Italian for "Paradise" "Heaven" or "สวรรค์" sa-wan in Thai. When Somchai is creating, he feels wonderful, he feels great, he feels free, a sense of nirvana. That is exciting and part of the joy of creating. Ceramic slip-casting is a simple technique to create objects of varying

complexities based upon a mould and reproduce them in multiples. Somchai likes to challenge his skill by making a mould that will explore the possibilities and limits of what the medium can be. For this body of

work he used plaster moulds and slip casting techniques. He cut and reconstructed old and new plaster moulds together, not knowing the

outcome before casting. Piecing together different elements of various moulds is like constructing an alternate reality from existing entities.

Despite never knowing the outcome of the work, he is always optimistic that he is giving a new and better life to what was previously discarded.

Letting go of the conscience-making process allows randomness and instinct to take over, transforming the imagined into a new reality.

YUSUKE ABEYusuke Abe is a painter from Yamagata and is currently based in

Tokyo, he holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts and a Masters of Fine Arts in painting from Tama Art University. In his work, Abe references video games, card games, doodles, nostalgia etc. Drawing on his own experiences Abe depicts memories of his childhood creating

dream-like worlds infused with pop culture and scenes from everyday life. He has exhibited in Japan and internationally.

While still in his twenties Yusuke has painted thousands of works by the stoic and strong force of creation. In his most recent works, he has drawn upon the technique of collage. For instance; sticking trading cards or video game software on the painting; gluing other canvases on a canvas. He feels connected with game culture and

the abundant nature in the northeast region of Japan from his childhood days. The various materials he chooses to use on his

paintings, point to and symbolise these origins. At the same time, these is also a manifestation of critical awareness to existing fine-arts, or challenges to new visual representation. Game, nature, his

own memory ... , the fragments of the worlds that tie up the different dimensions become parts of a colourful and strange

painting. The work evokes an enigmatic sense of the relativity of these different dimensions to the viewer - This world where we live,

is just as equal to those other countless worlds.
