January Lunch Menu on Page 6

U.S. HISTORY – Dr. Barale’s class will be ringing in the holiday season with a Christmas Breakfast Bond at her home tomorrow, December 20.

DRAMA – Auditions for this year’s High School play, The Mouse That Roared, were held Tuesday and the cast announced yesterday.

HAWAIIAN STUDIES – The 1st grade students visited Joshua Fukino at the KCC taro patch this week. They discovered tadpoles in the water and pulled weeds.

MUSIC – Kindergartners and their 3rd grade buddies visited the residents at the Regency at Pua Kea on Monday and sang holiday songs.

CHEMISTRY – Ms. Haverkort’s students are making rock candy! Students are studying the difference in formation of crystal rock candy and amorphous rock candy on a molecular level. During the formation of crystal rock candy the sugar molecules are attracted to each other in a highly ordered structure which results in

the formation of beautiful crystals visible by eye. During the formation of amorphous rock candy, corn syrup, food coloring, and food flavoring are added, which interfere with the structuring of sugar molecules and inhibit the formation of crystals, resulting in the formation of candy with no specific structure (in other words, amorphous).

SPANISH – The 7th grade class became a language lab this week. Students have been busy working on Duolingo, an online language program. Each student has their own Duolingo account and uses a Chromebook to access the program. They are able to work at their own pace and have been quite engaged incorporating their speaking, listening and writing skills.

PRE-K – In keeping with a “Polar Express” theme, students made box cars out of cardboard and took a trip “around the world” today, visiting winter festivals from other cultures. Since today was Pajama Day, they dressed in PJs just like the boy from the film. After lunch, they’ll all watch the film in class. Tomorrow they’re taking a real train ride with the Kilohana Railway, followed by a picnic lunch in the Japanese Pavilion at KCC.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION – Students in grades 3-5 and 7 have started practicing their basketball skills in PE class.

NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY – NHS is an academic service organization whose selection criteria are character, leadership, scholarship, and service. Membership is open to current sophomores, juniors and seniors. Applications for membership

may now be submitted for the 2014 induction class of the National Honor Society. Applications are available from Dr. Barale or Mr. Bray and must be completed by noon on Monday, January 13.

SENIOR UPDATE – Makali‘i Pratt has been accepted at Pacific University in Forest Grove, OR. Kristina Scheppers has been accepted at Western Washington University in Bellingham, WA. Hailey Lord has been accepted at University of Oregon in Eugene, OR. Kirsten Malapit has been accepted at Azusa University in Azusa, CA, and Margo Latif has been accepted at Whittier College in Whittier, CA, with merit scholarship awards.

THIRD GRADE – The class bid a fond farewell to their teacher’s aid, Kat Rogers, last Friday. She is moving to Montana to join her serviceman husband. They made her a book highlighting her time in their classroom (see photo). Taking her place is Jen Schwartz, who has already settled in. A more formal introduction of Jen will be in January’s PC.
