ART – Middle and high school students in Ms. Penny’s classes are creating strong visual images of a Harley Davidson motorcycle, which occupies center stage in the art room. Their assignment is to focus on one area of this complicated machine and emphasize its sculptural form. Photos of their finished paintings will follow. This is the second week his motorcycle has occupied center stage in the art room.

SENIOR UPDATE – Congratulations to Bailey Schneider, our first member of the Class of 2014 who has received a college acceptance letter. Bailey has been accepted at the University of Iowa in Iowa City, Iowa and was awarded a National Scholars Award!

CHEMISTRY – Students did a lab on the properties of solids. They are used 5 different solids (sand,

salt, sugar, aluminum and stearic acid (animal fat)), and learned the differences in their properties such as melting point, brittleness, solubility, conductivity, volatility, and appearance. These findings will help them figure out what characteristics are typical for certain types of molecular bonds (covalent network, molecular, ionic, metallic).

ENGINEERING – The Intro to Engineering students built columns out of paper, and discovered that it’s not very hard to make one that will hold 145 lbs, or 12,000 times its own weight. (Maybe more - we didn’t have enough weight to crush some of these.)

KIF GIRLS VOLLEYBALL – Games are Tuesdays and Fridays. This week our Voyagers play against Kapa‘a at Kapa‘a. JV games begin

at 5 p.m., followed by varsity games at 6:30. We don’t play next week. Games will start up again the week of Sept. 30th. Come on out and cheer on our team!

FIRST GRADE – Students have been studying the metamorphosis of butterflies and frogs in science this week. They also made vegetable soup to highlight a book they are reading, Growing Vegetable Soup, by Lois Ehlert.

I.S. Chronicles

Pat & Rosalind DeBusca enjoy Rainbow Grandparents’ day with their grandson,

Matthew Dobashi, in kindergarten last Friday.

Gordon Perry’s Harley occupies “center stage” in the art room.

Lansen Eto & Quinn Hannah-White ‘14, learn about weight bearing structures.

Freshman Lia Yamasato shows Aija Sclafani her 3-D cell model in biology.

Spanish students use their language skills to communicate on Edmodo, an

educational social media site.

Jordan Macklin ‘16 & Khayman Hamilton ‘15, learn about the properties

of solids.
